Our Long Weekend at The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island

Justin and I managed to squeeze in a long weekend away at The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island in South Carolina in May. It was just around the time of our 14-year wedding anniversary, so the timing felt special!

I’ve always heard great things about The Sanctuary, but neither of us had ever been to the resort, let alone Kiawah Island. The closest place we’ve vacationed at is the Isle of Palms when we stayed at the Sweetgrass Inn — which I would highly recommend especially if you’re looking for a kid-friendly spot!

We chose The Sanctuary for a restful retreat, something with a slow pace that offered outdoor activities and leisure, but also had a few great restaurants to choose from as well. Kiawah is known as a top golfing destination, and even though Justin loves to play golf he didn’t play due to how quick this trip was.

We arrived on Thursday night and after dropping our stuff in our room, we headed out to the Ryder Cup Bar, which is in the clubhouse of the Ocean Course, one of the hardest golf courses in the country. We watched a few foursomes play through while we waited for our table and then enjoyed a delicious meal while watching the sunset.

Over the course of the next two days, we did a lot of biking, walking, and enjoyed time at the pool. There are miles of paved bike paths along the island, so that was a really great activity that we both enjoyed.

We drove into Charleston for a special anniversary dinner one of the evenings and ate at The Peninsula Grill, which was a place we dined at during our honeymoon 14 years ago! If you haven’t been, the food and service are outstanding and you must save room for their famous coconut cake.

We ate a few meals at the Jasmine Porch, which was the more casual restaurant in the hotel, and ventured over to Freshfields for pizza one of the evenings. We ate at La Tela Pizzeria and it was so good. The place is small and it filled up quickly, so it was good that we got there when it opened at 5:00 pm!

The hotel was equally charming and grand, and the huge live oak trees that created canopies over streets and pathways made it feel especially magical. The decor was refined, oversized, and elegant, and the details of service throughout our stay made the experience absolutely perfect.

We spoke to a few families who shared how many kid-friendly activities there were, so while this was just a romantic getaway for us, I would love to go back with the kids one day!

Been going to Kiawah since 1984 when our oldest was 10. All three of our boys love Kiawah and now take their families most every year. It’s definitely our happy place. When you take your children, be sure to go to the Monday night Oyster Roast at Mingo Point. It’s fantastic and so much fun!
