Regardless of trends, I’m always going to prefer to have a little bit of volume in my hair when I’m styling it. And great volume starts in the shower. The wrong shampoo can render even the best styling products ineffective. I’m sharing a round-up of 7 great volumizing shampoos below!

IGK Legendary Shampoo – a great option for building thickness and volume. You know when you have your hair freshly colored and it just styles beautifully and feels so full and volumized? That is how this shampoo makes my hair feel.

IGK 30,000 Feet Volume Shampoo – if you like a clean feeling, volumizing shampoo that provides lift without any kind of “thickening” feeling on the hair shaft, you’d love this.

Virtue Full Shampoo – a really effective volumizing and thickening shampoo. The product itself feels thick and when you work it into your hair it lathers nicely and leaves your hair feeling nice and volumized.

Redken Volume Injection Shampoo – a straightforward, no-fuss volumizing shampoo!

Bumble and bumble Thickening Volume Shampoo – if you are just looking for understated volume, this is a great option!

Living Proof Full Shampoo – similar in feel to Virtue Full Shampoo, this is a nice lifting and thickening option for anyone with fine or thin hair.

L’Oreal Everpure Sulfate Free Volume Shampoo – if you prefer a sulfate-free option, especially at a drugstore price, this is a nice option for clean volume and lift.

I’ve tried Big sexy and most recently TeaTree’s volume lines, and while I like them on day 1, they don’t react well with dry shampoo for repeat performance on day 2. Is my hair just too long/fine for a day 2 life? I’m trying to improve volume and thickness without having to go the extensions route.

I’m wondering how a volume shampoo works, since you rinse out every trace of shampoo each time. Do you know? I can see how a volume conditioner could add volume but don’t understand volume shampoo.

It still can build volume in the hair because of how it’s formulated!

I need volume at my roots but have very coarse/frizzy hair so volumizing shampoos always roughen up the hair follicle which makes it even coarser/frizzier. What do you recommend in this case? A different type of shampoo and some kind of root lift spray/powder? Or volumizing shampoo with a different conditioner and styling products?

Do you have any recommendations for a root lifting spray or powder to use once hair is dry? May hair falls flat whether I curl it or use a waver. Any recommendations?

I use Biolage Volume Bloom for my fine hair, what are you thoughts on that one? Also, have you heard of Monat? I don’t use it but have friends on Instagram that sell it and are constantly pushing it, I wondered, you being a former hair stylist what your thoughts were on it. It’s very expensive but you can get it for less if you sign up to sell it which is how they people into working for them, it’s an MLM company.

I’d recommend googling a bit before purchasing Monat.

Are these safe to use on color treated hair? I have fine hair that I would love to volumize a bit but it’s colored red and I don’t want to cause problems with that.

Thanks so much!

Thank you for the detailed descriptions included with each brand – I find it very helpful! And I love that this post is tailored to just one topic – volumizing shampoo. I feel it’ll be easier to find again on your blog when I’m looking in future.

Any recommendations for conditioners as well? Non color treated & fine but thick hair

Do you have any recommendations for stringy hair? Even with texturizing products and/or dry shampoo, my hair looks so stringy and needs to be brushed several times throughout the day, which is a bummer when I curl it.

How does your conditioner affect the volume achieved with the shampoo? I have been using Redkin All Soft forever, but my hair just gets thinner and finer as I age. If I switched my shampoo to something like Living Proof Full, but still used All Soft, would they counteract?

I’m always after more volume in my hair and I needed new shampoo so this post came at a perfect time. I ended up getting the Virtue shampoo (and conditioner) and so far I’m really pleased! My hair feels good and I love the smell. Thanks for the recommendation!

Hello Kate, thank you for putting for favorite volume shampoos on the blog!! Do you recommend to also use volume conditioner and do you recommend always using the same brand as the shampoo that you use? Thank you for all you do for us followers!! And your kitchen turned out beautiful!!!

I have very dry, fine, very thin, very straight and flat hair. I used a volumizing shampoo years ago, but it made my hair look fuzzy and dried it out even more. My stylist put in partial highlights to give it more dimension and volume. Is there a volumizing shampoo that you would recommend for dry, colored/damaged hair? Or do I need to avoid volumizing shampoos because my hair is so dry?
