Caring for your Scalp

Winter is brutal on skin and hair, and it can be really hard to hydrate a dry scalp during this season as well. Beyond just the season we’re in being rough on hair and skin, it’s a good idea to care for your scalp all year round. Product buildup, oils, dirt, and more can get trapped on your scalp and sometimes you need a product that will work a little differently than shampoo to cleanse, detox, and nourish your scalp.

In this post, I’m highlighting two scalp care products from two of my favorite brands. I’ve used both a handful of times already and can tell you that I’m really pleased with the results of both of them! The main difference is the application method and the full hair conditioning aspect of the Virtue Exfoliating Scalp Treatment. In general, they both left my scalp feeling refreshed and left no residue on my hair either!

Let’s start with the Amika Reset Charcoal Detoxifying Scalp Cleansing Oil. This product is extremely easy to apply because you can use the nozzle tip to place the product directly on your scalp. The consistency is unique in that it looks like an oil when you apply it, but when it is massaged in it becomes a little foamy. The menthol element smells so refreshing and left my scalp feeling tingly and fresh.

This product is really focused on detoxifying and exfoliating the scalp. The combination of clay and charcoal work together to pull out excess oil or residue from your scalp, and leave it feeling both clean and hydrated!

The last thing you want is to dry out the skin on your scalp, so the Sea Buckthorn Berry is a perfect addition to hydrate the scalp and also moisturize the hair as well.

This is a great product to use once a week, and you follow it up with shampoo then conditioner.

Another product I’d recommend is the Virtue Exfoliating Scalp Treatment. This comes in a tub and the texture of the product is whipped and light. I like to use it by roughly dividing my hair into four sections, then applying it as close as I can get to the partings.

The fruit enzymes and BHA’s work to exfoliate your scalp, lifting away any dry flakes or dirt. There is also a mix of oils that soothe and soften the skin and hair. A nice perk of this Virtue Exfoliating Scalp Treatment is that it can be used as a deep conditioner as well! Apply it to your scalp, and spend time working the product down to your ends. It’s creamy and rich and doesn’t need to be shampooed out afterward.

You would ideally use this as often as you would use a deep conditioner, but could also use it in place of a daily conditioner once a week.

A clean and fresh scalp leads to fewer flakes on your shoulders, and also could help support the volume and lift of your hair at the roots since there wouldn’t be anything to weigh it down.

Both of these products are key for keeping your scalp healthy, clean, and nourished. And you can certainly use them both since they both offer unique benefits to your scalp and hair! On days that you are looking for nourished hair from scalp to tip, grab the Virtue Exfoliating Scalp Treatment! And on the days you are looking for more detoxification of the scalp, use the Amika Reset Charcoal Detoxifying Scalp Cleansing Oil. Like I said above, both are great products from reputable brands that really work exactly like they say they will.

You can find both of these products, and so much more, at Sephora!

If you struggle with dry scalp in the winter months is it better to wash your hair more or less often? Every other day vs every 3-4 or no difference?

I have recently been struggling with dandruff and have NEVER experienced it before. 🙈 My skin & hair routine hasn’t change much so I’m really not sure why it’s happening. I used the Amika Reset Charcoal Detoxifying Cleansing Oil today for the first time & my scalp feels so refreshed & clean. It was so easy to use, I didn’t leave it on for very long before hopping in the shower & still feel & see the benefits. These recommendations are so appreciated Kate! ❤️

Hi Kate! Do you think these products are appropriate to use on children, or do you have a separate recommendation for them? My daughter is 11 and deals with a lot of dandruff (I don’t think it’s psoriasis) and her hair is insanely thick. She’s at the age where I’m not exactly checking to see if all the shampoo/conditioner has been rinsed out, but I do want to help her so she doesn’t develop a lot of self-consciousness about it. Thanks!

Would these products be okay to use for kids as well?

Lovvvvve your blog! I recently discovered the same Amika shampoo and have been loving it for my scalp (it doesnt overdry). I mix it in with a bit of apple cider vinegar which I learned about on this blog (https://www.sittingprettyhalohair.com/blogs/news/how-to-wash-your-scalp). Thanks for sharing your tips!
