Answering some Questions: my robe, childcare, religion, and more!

next
Gel Versus Dip Nails

I receive a lot of the same question from readers and I’m always looking for ways to quickly and easily provide answers. I thought I’d round up a bunch of the most asked and answer them in this post!

What do you use for cold sores? I have a prescription for valacyclovir that I got from my doctor. I take it as soon as I start to feel the tingle/itch. It usually keeps it away or makes the actual cold sore very, very small. Other than that, I put Abreva on it right away. They can be contagious but neither Justin nor my children have never gotten one(so far)!

Where is your striped robe from? Lake Pajamas. I have a medium.

What is your childcare situation? Right now Justin and I are tag-teaming the kids which is really great. His job is flexible and gets busier in the warmer months so we’ll just adapt to what we need at any given moment. In the fall David will be in Kindergarten, Luke will be in a 5 day a week preschool, so we’ll just navigate what kind of childcare we need for Emily!

Are you mormon? No, I’m a Christian. Sometimes you’ll hear that phrase used for Mormons as well but we believe different things.

Are you going to write part 4 of your love story? Yes! Working on it! Read part 1, 2, and 3 by clicking the numbers.

What did you do before blogging? I did hair! And loved it! I worked in a private studio which was amazing and I loved running my own business. I stopped doing hair right before I had David (who is now 5) and dove head first into continuing my blog.

What is your enneagram type? I can’t remember! I get this question a lot! I think I took the test back in the day when it became popular but I forgot and probably won’t take it again. I have friends who are super into knowing more about themselves via the enneagram but I’m not terribly interested at this time! **update: since I typed this I took the test and I’m a 2 wing 3!

What can I do about my dry scalp? Try this new product by Living Proof. I’ve been using it and really love it! I will also use Head & Shoulders from time to time when my scalp gets REALLY dry.

What do you think about the Neutrogena Hyaluronic Acid products? I used them for about a week and ended up having a bit of a break out. It didn’t sink in as deeply as the PTR products, it seemed, and they were generally thicker with a stronger fragrance than the PTR Water Drench line. I went back to the Water Drench!

How do you clean your makeup brushes? All about cleaning makeup brushes and hair tools is shared on this post!

As always, I hope I have provided an answer for you! You can always use the search box right on the side of my blog to look for anything else!

I would love to know more about ways you give back, like volunteer efforts and charity. With all your blessings and your Christian faith, it would be so inspiring and grounding to hear about what you accomplish in that realm!

I’ll think about that! It’s a personal thing and I never want to come off like I’m looking for the glory by sharing ways we bless others but it could be an opportunity for a reader to learn about an organization or way they TOO can contribute!

I would like to try the Living Proof for dry scalp, but it says to use it 4 times a week. I don’t wash my hair that often. How many days a week do you use it?

Reply
Kate says · 02.20.19

I would use it whenever I feel like it. I think they say to use it 4 times a week to see the maximum benefits from it. But if you only wash your hair 3 times a week, only use it those times!

Thanks for the dry scalp recommendations! I too have dry scalp and had to switch from a regular shampoo to Head and Shoulders. It’s actually done wonders for my hair.

I had the WORST reaction to the Neutrogena Hyaluronic acid line…awful cystic acne – 6 huge, painful cyts, from my chin to my forhead. They were the most stubborn things ever and took about 3 months for it to settle completely. My dermatologist told me that while Hyaluronic Acid is great – sometimes when it binds to certain filler products in creams and lotions, it can actually cause an allergic reaction to people that are sensitive enough to it. I guess I was just lucky! I have tried a couple others as well with not much better results. I now try to just steer clear of anything with Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate in a lot of packaging) for fear that it’s going to cause cysts again!

I wish I could figure out where to go to just ask a specific question…can’t seem to find it, so here goes: Kate, I LOVE your hair color. I showed my stylist a picture of your hair. What I got looks nice, but I need to ask how you color your hair to get the awesome “shadow roots.” My stylist uses foils. Is that the best way to get a natural looking result? Your color looks so natural…mine, not so much. Thanks!

I use foils on my own hair as well. If your stylist is able to softly brush the lightener in painting strokes on your hair versus pressing a straight color brush down horizontally on the hair, that will give it a softer look when it grows out!

I really appreciate that even with how busy you are professionally and personally with your homelife, you always take the time to write really thoughtful blogs and are frequently posting on Instagram. I’ve been following you for 6 years or so and you seem to have mastered the work/life balance! At least from an outside perspective. You’re ability to be really open and genuine, but also keep some aspects of life private, is really impressive.

Wow KAss that means a lot! I certainly haven’t but it’s taken years of practice!

Kate! Two parter!
1. Have you ever used the image skincare line? Thoughts if yes?
2. Are you going to do a dermaplaning tutorial or test run in the future? Super interested and also scarrrrred 😆
Thanks!

1. No and 2. Yes!

Kate-

My two girls have thin wavy hair that turns into beautiful ringlets when the humidity increases. What are your go-to shampoo and conditioner products for kids (5 and 3yr old)?

I complely agree about the Neutrogena products. They are smelly and kindof sting as well. PTR is much better.

Cold sores AREN’T genetic. You have to be exposed to the virus in order to get one. So you probably were exposed from your mom, or someone else, from the virus when you were younger. You could’ve been exposed at any time and not have known.

news flash: you don’t get cold sores ‘genetically’.

Cold sores are a VIRUS that you get from contact from someone/something that has it. How do you get them “genetically” from your mother? They’ve found that some people carry a gene that makes them more susceptible to breakouts or make the breakouts worse but you’re not born with them. If an infant gets them, they can be life-threatening but that’s when they’re kissed by a relative who’s infected. Otherwise if you’re exposed, you get them occasionally.

thanks for the “news flash” Kate.

I always understood that genes could play a part in some people being more prone to getting them.

Lol thank you for replying to this! Trying to be a know it all and then being told is fantastic. Also, who got the idea that you’re mormon? Ha!

Not so great for engagement and when companies look at which blogs to best partner with.

Straightener question. Have you ever heard or used a steamer straightener? They say it’s easier on the hair and less drying. Thoughts?? Thanks so much!
