How to wake up with the best hair

Anytime I can get an extra day out of my hair without rewashing is a win for me. And I know a lot of you feel the same way! When dry shampoo became popular again a few years ago, that enabled so many more women to get an extra day or so out of their style which was a massive victory in the time department.

And the tricep department if your arms hurt from blow drying.

Dry shampoo is great but there are two things that will drastically help you restyle your hair the following day, or even potentially give you the option to do NOTHING more to it.

2 essentials for getting an extra day or two out of your hairstyle:

  1. A silk pillow case
  2. a loose hair elastic

I’ve been sleeping on a Slip silk pillow case for a few years. Not only does it feel like a dream against my skin, but it keeps my hair ultra smooth and frizz-free. Have you ever woken up with a crimped section of your hair and wondered how in the world it got there? OR had a very strange bend around the root area causing your hair to flip a weird direction? That almost never happens with a silk pillowcase. Honestly, it’s NEVER happened with a silk pillowcase for me.

If you are looking for a more budget friendly pillowcase, this one got great reviews on Amazon.

Beyond that, sleeping with your hair up in a very loose ponytail will aid in waking up with smooth locks as well. I recently started using the Slip scrunchies and love them. They are a tiny bit loose when I wrap them around my hair twice, but thats enough to keep my hair up without slipping out of the scrunchie altogether. The fabric of the scrunchy should be soft, and it should not be tight around your hair to cause a crease. After I put my hair in a ponytail and lay down, I slide the scrunchie a little closer to my ends so it doesn’t crease around my crown. But even if I wake up with a crease, it’s much easier to smooth it out with a flat iron instead of restyling altogether.

My haircare routine for bedtime is simple. I brush through it with my wet brush and usually flip it to the opposite side that it was parted on. Then right before I crawl into bed, I flip over and pull it into the highest ponytail possible. I lay down on the pillow, slide the scrunchie down an inch or so, and go to sleep! In the morning, I take it out and my hair usually looks exactly the same as the night before. If I need to recurl, I’ll touch up the top and front of my hair, but if I’ve flat ironed it it typically doesn’t need any more heat styling!

I don’t use dry shampoo, but if you use it I’d suggest spraying it on the night before! That can help absorb oil or dirt while you sleep, then you can just brush through it in the morning!

Anything I can do to save time is helpful for this season of my life, and I hope these tips help you too!

If you are shopping the Nordstrom sale you can get the Slip Silk pillowcase for an incredible deal!

p.s. if you’re feeling the silk thing, this is a pretty silk robe!

Any suggestions for greasy scalp and dry/course ends? I use dry shampoo the second day but it’s still pretty greasy. It’s just so much work to wash every day!

Use your dry shampoo at night so your hair doesn’t have a chance to get oily!

I love my Slip pillowcase! It has helped my skin a lot too, it doesn’t have any weird marks for sleeping when I wake up in the morning. I’ve been eyeing the scrunches, I’m excited to hear they actually work!
Thanks for the great tips! xAllie

Thank you for the ideas! I’ve heard good things about silk pillowcases, really intrigued and really want to try one out. 🙂

Would a satin pillowcase do just as well as a silk one??

Reply
Erin Montgomery says · 07.19.18

I also wonder this – I have a satin one but don’t find it all that Life changing.

More reason I love your blog: you didn’t put on fake eyelashes and a ton of makeup to take a “sleep” picture. Thanks for being authentic!

Out of curiosity why don’t you use dry shampoo?

Reply
Kate says · 07.16.18

I have a dry scalp and my hair doesn’t really get oily!

I’ve never thought of tying it on the opposite side of my natural part, so thanks! I’ll be trying this tip out soon! Still need to get a silk pillowcase though.

I have the same problem, but I have found dry shampoo to be much more helpful if I use it before my hair looks greasy. It requires planning ahead, but it does help.

This is great! I need to try a silk pillow case. I normally sleep with my hair in a loose braid but that only works if it’s wavy!

This might sound silly, but what is the difference between a wet brush and a paddle brush? Are they the same?

Reply
Kate says · 07.16.18

The Wet Brush is just the brand name, it’s a vented paddle brush 🙂

This pillowcase is $110. I see them on amazon for a verity of different price points but most of them at the $20-$30 range. Am i missing something? I’m just curious why this one is so expensive?

Reply
Kate says · 07.16.18

I’ve seen a variety on amazon as well. I bought one for $20 once and it was terrible, TERRIBLE quality. I have yet to find one at a cheaper price point that is as high of quality as Slip. If I do, I’ll be sure to share it because I do realize $100 on a pillowcase is expensive

I have been doing this for about 5 years now and couldn’t agree more! silk/satin scrunchies and pillow cases are THE best 🙂

When you sleep in curled hair, assuming you brush through the curls the next morning? Then how do you style, more curls or up? Love the blog, thanks Kate! Emily and the boys are adorable!

Kate says · 07.17.18

I’ll usually just touch up some curls on the top section of my hair!

What would you recommend I do for short shoulder length hair that can’t all be put up in that high of a ponytail? Thanks for sharing!

Reply
Kate says · 07.17.18

I probably would just leave it down if it can’t fit into a pony!

Have you ever tried a Silk Night Sleeping Cap? I wonder if this would be much better than a silk scrunchie…

Reply
Megan says · 07.18.18

Great tips! But how do you keep it from frizzing in the shower when you’re not washing it?

Reply
Jen R says · 07.20.18

I’ve tried a shower cap in the past but a wide hair band to keep it from my face seems to help as well.

Hi Kate! I have shorter hair (a chin-length bob) and can’t get all of it into a ponytail. Would you recommend pulling up what I can (the front and sides) or skipping the pony altogether? Kind of a silly question since you don’t have short hair, but thought I’d ask just in case you had feedback. Thanks!

Have you ever dealt with postpartum hair loss? Any tips? My sister is in the midst of dealing with it (she has a 4 month old) and I’m overdue for my first baby. Thanks!!

I really want to start using a silk pillow – I have curly hair so it can get pretty frizzy!

I tried your method last night, slept with my hair up in a really loose ponytail. But when I removed the scrunchy this morning and my hair fell down it hurt a lot on the scalp. 🙁 Is that normal? Does it hurt less when I do it every night?

Reply
Kate says · 07.21.18

no it shouldn’t hurt!

So do you shower at night then? Do you blow dry your hair before you go to bed?

Yes I do!

This is so helpful! I’ve had really short hair for years and decided it was time to grow it out with baby 4 (momma ain’t got time for showers these days) so all this “not washing your hair every day” business is new to me! I know you mentioned you don’t dry shampoo, but I have to as my hair gets pretty gross otherwise. Is there a brand you recommend that you like? I’m having a hard time finding one that doesn’t just feel gross. I also want to thank you for your videos! I successfully gave myself cute waves today thanks to one of your video tutorials. Was much less daunting than it seemed 😉

Whaaaa! The silk pillow case intrigues me! Normally I wouldn’t think much of it but now that I think about it, my hair gets so crimpy around my temples and I sleep on my side. If it weren’t for the crimps, my hair would be good to go in the morning. Maybe I need to try this out!

Has your routine changed at all in a year and a half? I’m trying to start making a routine for my hair instead of throwing it in a ponytail just after the shower and rush out the door. My next stop if your product blog 😉 thank you!

I love my Slip Pillowcase and have been using it for sometime now, but I was wondering if there is a specific pillow that works best? Mine seems to crease and wrinkle which causes the pillowcase to do the same, which is precisely what I don’t want. Thx so much 😘
