The 2 step bun (aka the way I’ve been wearing my hair all summer)

next
A soft cat eye with eyeshadow tutorial

I’ll save you my usual paragraph about how humid it is here and jump right into the tutorial.

A friend recently asked me for a quick style that is not just a ponytail and can be dressed up and casual and is really fast and easy with almost zero effort.

Well, so she didn’t use those exact words, but I paraphrased.

I started pulling my hair into a low bun because a higher ponytail was giving me headaches as my hair was starting to get a bit long again. And I did this simple little trick that takes about 4 seconds to change the entire bun into something a bit more polished.

Watch the tutorial here:

It’s so simple, right? The wrapping part makes the entire bun look fuller and more proportional, which is always a win in my book. And in case you are curious, these are my favorite bobby pins and these are my favorite clear elastics.

Can you explain what you did when you put your hair in a pony tail? I can’t see it very well. Did you just not pull it out all the way?

Thanks!

Shelley says · 06.28.17

I have same question…it looks like you did something else to it before putting in the elastic.

Reply
Ryan says · 06.28.17

I had the same question…she basically gathers most of the length of her hair into her hand and wraps the elastic around that, not actually a pony tail. It’s the basis to so many of her tutorials; I just figured it out and am wearing this bun today!

Hi Kate, I also have a wedding in three weeks. I need hair help! How will you wear your hair on your sister’s wedding day? Will you do a tutorial for us?

Love this look. My hair is so straight and slippery…not as thick either. Guess I should curl it a bit first?

I was thinking the same thing…..always beautiful, but something about this one really pops !!! Maybe it’s the blue shirt with the blue eyes, but the all over makeup look is fantastic. #eyelash goals !!!!!

I’d love to hear your tips for getting texture and volume whether you’re putting your hair up or leaving it down. When my hair is clean (and sometimes day 2) it’s pretty smooth and flat – do you load it up with texture spray?

I am almost never able to do a nice, even, full looking bun so I have to try this – hopefully I will end up with something that looks like yours, it’s gorgeous!

Can you show, in more detail or maybe in slow motion, the “pull it into a low ponytail” part? I cannot get that skill mastered.

Reply
Amanda says · 06.28.17

I have long thick hair and I tried this tutorial. I always end up with buns that look to perfect but doing it this way helped make it a little more undone. I had to use 2 hair ties, a couple Bobby pins, and two Goody spin pins to make sure my thick hair was secure. Loved it!

Nikki says · 11.09.17

Hey Amanda, I have super thick hair and when I try this it comes out looking really droopy. Where did you put the second hair tie?

Hair looks great but those eyelashes! Is this the result of the eyelash lift? Are you still using fibers and mascara method? Tell me your secrets 🙂

Amazing!! I will definitely do this! I have long hair & every summer I get this thought to cut it all off. I braid it a LOT but I’m always looking for new ways to put it up. If you have more suggestions I would absolutely love to hear some.
You always look so beautiful! I love your makeup look too.

Thanks for the video! I too am a hair headache sufferer. I actually switched my hair accessories and amazingly enough that helped alot! I don’t know if you have heard of Lilla Rose but I started wearing their stuff about 7 months ago and can’t even feel them in. For the bun you demo here, the U Pins would work great. I am an independent stylist for them now and would be happy to send you some to try. Just let me know if I can help another headache sufferer!
