Listen, hear no judgment from my end on this post, okay? My hair is as dry and damaged as ever. In fact, when I had my hair done recently by Jordan, I was a little ashamed about how bad it had gotten. I blamed it on heat damage, since I wash my hair just about every day because I work out every day, and the fact that I was growing it out. I had not scheduled a haircut with him, it was just supposed to be a color appointment, but after he blew it dry he said, with a longing look in his eye, “I have to clean the ends up a bit.”

I relented. And my ends look fresh and he didn’t cut ALL my hair off like the last stylist did who nearly scalped me until I was bald 11 years ago.

Yes that’s how long it’s been since someone other than myself has cut my hair, and yes it’s a problem. I’m working on it!

Anyway, because of the excessive use on my hair, I’m really being gentle toΒ it this season. I love the length, and love it blonde, so it needs some serious TLC.

If you are in the same boat, here are a few of my favorite deep conditioners to use on your locks!

Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment. This is a weightless deep conditioner that really heals your hair and reduces breakage. Personally, I love being able to scoop the product out of the tub since I use quite a bit, and my hair always feels better after I use it! Use 1-2 times a week for up to 5 minutes.

Pureology Colour Fanatic Instant Deep Conditioning Mask. This is extremely hydrating and nourishing for the hair. This will make your hair feel ultra soft and it helps reduce breakage and makes your hair super shiny. You can really tell that it locks in moisture, and I’ve been known to use this just as my daily conditioner after coloring my hair! Use as much as you want for 1-3 minutes.

L’Oreal Total Repair Extreme Emergency Recovery Mask. This is a great drugstore option for under $10! It moisturizes and helps heal your hair. I didn’t notice additional weight on my hair after I used it, so it’s a winner in my book! Use 1-2 times a week for 3-4 minutes.

If you haven’t used a mask, or deep conditioner, on your hair, I recommend trying it. If you are looking for a leave-in spray, I’d highly recommend this one by Pureology! Especially if you color your hair! Dry, damaged hair doesn’t style well and ultimately doesn’t look very pretty. Take care of your hair, and you won’t regret trying one of these products!

p.s. Since your moisturizing your dry hair, you may want to also try a hydrating face mask!

Do you think it could be the T3? I’ve had my iron for about a year and since I’ve had it, I’ve noticed my stylist saying my hair was more damaged than it has ever been. I use it in the third setting. The second heat setting doesn’t cut it!

My hair was as long as yours, also color treated, and she had to cut 2+ inches off at my appointment on Friday πŸ˜”

No, I’m fairly certain it’s from a clay based lightener that was used on my hair many months ago!

Which one would be better for thin/fine hair? I’ve always been hesitant as I don’t want something to weigh my hair down or make me look like a wet dog (super greasy) by the middle of the day.

Reply
Kate says · 01.16.17

First of all, check the return policy of wherever you purchase hair products from. Secondly, I’d go with the Living Proof Restore. Pureology & L’Oreal may be slightly too heavy for fine hair.

I also have fine hair! I tried the Pureology months ago based on Kate’s recommendation and did find it wonderful but a little heavy. But! From the same Pureology line they have a foam/mousse version of the mask and it was great to my fine hair!! πŸ™‚

Question: when using a deep condition do you use it right after shampooing and skip your normal conditioner?

probably a dumb question but figured I would ask… I defiantly need to try this as I never use them.

Hey Kate,

I struggle with battling damage as well since I work out every day I tend to have to wash my hair every day. Do you have a recommendation for a leave in conditioner/treatment/spray for after the shower to help damage?

Thanks!

I actually started really caring for my hair last year by using a hair mask for hydration and switching to sulfate-free shampoo. It has made such a difference in the health and look of my hair.

Thanks for this!! You may have done this post in the past. If so, I’m sorry if my question is redundant. But my husband and I are entering a season where salon-quality products won’t be affordable anymore. So I’m needing low cost hair care that will still be good on my hair. I heard one stylist say that suave is the best to use because so much of their products are water, which means there are less bad ingredients in the product. But I thought I would check with you. Any recommendations on great shampoos and conditioners I can pick up at the drug store? Hoping to not lose good hair during a financially hard season! πŸ™‚

Hi Kate
I’m an addicted follower going on 2 year-ish now.
Love your tips and tells.
I really must share this tip with you, if you haven’t already tried it: Organic coconut oil!
I have terribly dry hair and damaged ends.
My scalp is very dry in the winter but my hair also gets oily and greasy very fast.
Dry shampoo is my friend as I only wash about 2 times a week.
However, I have been using coconut oil for a mask for about a month 2-3 times a week.
Just rub it in really good covering all the hair, leave for at least 30 minutes and then wash out. Shampoo before water! Finish with a small amont of conditioner at the ends. It has done wonders with my hair πŸ™‚

I love your post. Do you have any knowledge of damage due to hard water? I used to have soft and silky hair until I got married and moved to the country. Now we have well water and it has distroyed my hair 😞 Would these products still help? Any additional tips? Thank you!

I think that is my problem too..build up and damage d/t hard water. We moved to TN 2 years ago and signed a 3 year lease. So we are not putting in a water softener, and this is the first time in ever maybe I haven’t had one. I swear that’s what it is. I have been suffering from dandruff for the first time in my life and so are 4 of my 5 children…and they are all tween/teen. It HAS to be the water!!

I just left a place with really hard water! It was tough on my hair. My shampoo was Ion’s Hard Water shampoo, and it seemed to work well (my hair felt clean!), although I didn’t sample any other cleansers. My hairstylist (v. high end) recommended I add in a spray product with tea tree oil, although I left shortly afterwards & never ended up doing so. I was using a leave-in conditioner from Aveda, which was so-so (maybe would’ve been better if the water was a bit softer, or maybe I was using dry shampoo too much & needed more daily conditioning). I think if I had done a weekly hydrating mask like these, I wouldn’t have seen a difference in my hair! Hopefully all of those thoughts help!

Sorta related question…whenever I get my hair cut, I’m always told that I should get color of some kind (fools, bialage…..). I’m 34 with great natural color, no grey. I had minimal highlights in college, but after one time of seeing a quarter inch of roots, I realized I didn’t gave the patience for continuous upkeep, so I let it grow out (I rocked ombrΓ© before it was cool!)

As a hair professional, can you tell me/us if stylists are saying this because they genuinely believe that color would make my hair look better, or because salon management is pushing them to sell services to make more money? I’d love to believe the former, but with the squeeze I keep getting to color my hair when I’ve said it wasn’t really something that fit my lifestyle or anal retentive personality makes me think that maybe it wasn’t as altruistic as that. As one who’s been behind the chair, any thoughts?

My hair is very similar to yours I think from watching your videos and following your blog for many years now and I absolutely swear by the Ouai products. This is the longest I’ve had my hair pretty much ever and I also heat style it daily (usually a flat iron) and my stylist is always amazed at how healthy my hair is. I don’t blow dry it often- I let it air dry in all it’s awfulness and then fix it with the iron. LOL. Plus it all smells amazing. People keep asking me what perfume I’m wearing- and I’m not!

Should you be able to see immediate results when using the Living Proof hair mask? Or, is this a product that with use over time (1-2x per week), you’ll eventually see results? I have used this mask twice and find that it gives the feeling much like my regular conditioner…nothing deeper.

Not to be dramatic, but it has changed my life. I’m a tv news anchor and use heat/hairspray/teasing daily. (wash every other day)

I tried the pureology deep conditioner and although good… it didn’t even compare to the Joico product.

I’m obviously getting nothing out of this… I just love it so much! ALMOST as much as Kenra vol 25.

I have baby fine strands but a very thick head of hair, slightly wavy, highlighted blonde. Conditioners do a great job of softening to the touch, but after conditioning I still end up with a frizzy texture that looks dry (not much shine) whether I blow dry or air dry. Is a mask useful for this sort of problem or is this more of a styling product issue?

Would you consider doing a post about styling healthy hair? I’ve completely cut out blow drying, and use heat to style (flat iron or curling iron) maybe once a week. But now when I try to do my hair for date night or an event as I previously did, it won’t hold anything! My hair is straight as a board with a slight bend at the end when air drying and seemingly TOO healthy!

Thanks in advance!

I know something about damaged hair and split ends, been there. However, adding a few drops of oil to my deep conditioning mask at least once a week has helped a lot and regular trims. I will definitely try the Pureology Spray as I’m looking for something that I can use before straightening or curling my hair. Would you recommend anything else as a thermal spray, please? I have a question…actually I’m looking or some advice for my 14 yo daughters hair. Ever since she’s started puberty she’s dealt with oily hair AND dandruff. It’s such an odd combo and we have tried so many salon products, we tried all over color without any pigment and dry shampoo. Nothing has helped and I feel so frustrated for her! Have you ever come across this problem and/or do you have any recommendations? I’d appreciate any suggestions you could give me. Thank you!!!

Whitney says · 11.05.17

My daughter had the same issue. A few foils and a partial highlight just in the front section of her hair worked really well to control the oil. They were subtle highlights, tho – nothing dramatic. We did just 5 foils. Her stylist also recommended Paul Mitchell tea tree oil shampoo once a week to control oil. Worked wonders for her. The highlights were subtle, but the bleach dried the front section a bit and even helped with beginnings of acne on her forehead.

Thanks so much for the advice! Both are such good suggestions. I wanted to share with anyone in the same boat who is struggling with dandruff and oily hair what actually happened. We were at the dermatologist for a separate issue and I thought to ask about her scalp. Turns out she has the adult form of “Cradle Cap”!! Who knew that even existed (ok….I didn’t!). So…the dermatologist suggested the T-oil by Neutrogena and alternating with Selsun Blue. She also prescribed a steroid gel to rub on her scalp for a few days to get it under control. We still struggle with the oily hair a little but this treatment really helped get the dandruff under control. Just thought I’d share. Thanks so much Whitney for taking the time to share your suggestions with me. I will definitely try the shampoo you suggested and yes, some highlights around the face did help! I appreciate your time!

Just watched the video of you styling your friend’s thinning hair. I would love a post on Green Beauty Products for thin hair. I use the aquage setting spray but just purchased two Aveda products (volumizing tonic & thickening spray). The tonic works wonders!!! Use Toppix dusting powder to cover the real thin spots if I am going out to an event. I also work out every day but try not to wash my hair that often. I would love to get a haircut and take a few inches off yet keep enough length for a pony tail when exercising. I dread getting my hair cut but would sign up in second if you were closer ;o) Thanks!
