My Favorite Product Combinations to Hold Curl and Boost Volume

hair

My hair, in it’s natural state, is limp and lifeless. I need at least one volumizing product to give it a little bounce, and I’m not above layering a few volumizing products onto my wet hair to encourage even bigger and more textured hair!

What can I say, I like big hair.

My go-to combination, for roughly the past year or so, is the following:

volume-products

I apply Aquage Uplifting Foam in at my roots. That ends up being about 3-4 partings down each side of my head, and a few partings into and below the crown area. You can watch me do this here.

Then, I’ll either pick up my Kevin Murphy anti.gravity.spray OR the Pureology Instant Levitation Mist and lift my hair in a few sections, spraying all around the underneath parts. I do NOT use both of these products together, I simply grab whichever one I feel like using.

The Kevin Murphy anti.gravity.spray smells just so nice and I love how much volume it gives. I’ve found that I get a bit of frizz on humid days with the Pureology Instant Levitation Mist, so when I spray that in, I avoid the top section of my hair.

Then, I’ll blow dry with a vent brush, flipping my hair from side to side and ultimately finishing it while hanging my head upside down.

I’m left with crazy volume, and using the wet volume spray prior to blow drying, creates a bit of hold without having to use a setting spray.

Where do you buy these at? I can’t seem to find them.

Each product I mentioned is linked, and that is where you can buy it!

Hmm, the link to the Aquage takes you to their website but I don’t see that you can purchase is from there. Am I missing something?

Aquage is only sold in private salons, so you can search for salons in your area that carry it!

They sell it on Amazon as well. I have bought it from there.

I’ve been using Aquage for years, since you first mentioned it on your blog years ago. I love it, and it really lasts a long time. I can make a can last at least 6 months. I only really use on important hair days 🙂 Thanks for the suggestion.

I need these – my hair always struggle to hold a curl for more than a couple hours. Finding the right products is always key for me. Thanks.

Would it work to do this the night before curling your hair with the curling iron? Would like to know what you use when you use the curling iron.

Hi Kate! I’ve been a huge fan of your blog of many years! I’m from Canada and we aren’t able to get Aquage products here, do you have a recommendation of another product that would give similar results?

Reply
Kate says · 11.09.16

I will do my best to try to find one! So far no luck!

I second Alyssa’s comment! In Canada, it seems like Aquage products just won’t jump the border! We could order from the US amazon site, but it ends up being close to $50 for the product!
Any recommendations for similar results would be much appreciated!

I’m on the eternal quest for a volumizing product that doesn’t leave my hair stiff or dirty feeling. I know you’ve said you like to have some texture in your hair. I also know that I’m looking for a holy grail. How does that Kevin Murphy spray feel in the hair?

My hair is super fine and thin, so I always look from volume boosting products. At the end of the day my curls are non-existent too. Thank you for the wonderful recommendations!

Kate- I too have fine, limp hair however thick. I also like to wash my hair at night as it takes FOREVER to dry. Does it do any good to put product like the Aquage foam in my hair if I’m just going to sleep on it? Mind you I don’t usually “fix” my hair so if I did put some sort of product in it at night would it hold my hair in a weird place depending on how it was slept on? (I hope that made sense). Thanks so much!! LOVE your blog.

I definitely need to check out those products! My hair is ultra-fine, thin, and has zero volume. Whenever I curl it, it just falls flat. I’m so glad you recommended some things for me to put on my next shopping list!

what heat protectant would you suggest for fine hair? I have fine curly hair that I dont know how to manage. I flat iron a couple times a week and the rest of the time its in a bun.

I live in the UK and it’s basically impossible to find Aquage here (without it costing triple the price it would in the US!) Do you either know of any places I can get it here or any similar products that I could use for volume? My hair is quite fine and flat ☹️️

Thank you!! Xx

Question for ya girly – I know you are familiar with curling irons and have done different hair tutorials with some. I am on the fence whether I should purchase the GHD 1 1/4 soft curl iron or the T3 Twirl Convertible Curling Iron with Interchangeable Clip Barrel. IF you were comparing both irons, is there one that out performs the other one? I know its cool you can buy other irons with the T3. Besides that is there one you would pick over the other one? I greatly appreciate your insight. LOVE your blog – been a long time follower.

Man both are SO good! I think I’d recommend T3 only because of the heat setting options it has. It makes the curling iron even more versatile than it already is!

Nice! That sounds really simple with zero fuss. I think we can all benefit from a little extra bounce/volume in our hair.

Hey-I love trying out new products and am always looking for the best volumizer. I went to Sallys to pick up some bobby pins and I found a generic uplifting foam from Sally’s that is the generic form of Aquage. What do you think about the generic products from Sally’s-are they as good for your hair and do they work as well?

Reply
Nicole says · 11.13.16

I like the Aquage foam but find that it doesn’t work nearly as well without heat and the work of a brush. My hair has a good deal of natural curl, so I also use the Aquage curl cream and then air dry. Is there anything I can do to get more oomph from the uplift foam? Using a blow dryer turns my curls to total frizz. Or can you recommend a volumizer that does well with air drying? Thank you!
