Ponytail with a Twist

I have my beautiful friend Iana here for a hair tutorial today! It’s the *fastest* way to jazz up a simple ponytail, so if you struggle with doing your hair, but you want to break out of a boring ponytail rut, try this!

To prep Iana’s hair and add a bit of texture, I curled it with a 1 1/4 inch iron and tousled it with texture spray to finish. If you’d like to watch a video tutorial to see how that is done, check this one!

To start, gather a top layer of hair at the crown, push up, and pin in place. This is an easy way to get lift at the crown if your hair really falls flat or is very, very fine.

Next, grab all but two sections on either side of your face, and pull into a low-ish ponytail. At this point you can also slide those initial bobby pins out since the ponytail elastic will hold everything in place!

Starting on either side, split the front section in half, and twist over each other until you reach the end of the hair.

Then, starting at the bottom, work your way back towards the root area and pull softly on the twist.

Wrap the twist around the top of the ponytail, and pin in place.

Repeat on the other side, wrapping around the top of the ponytail as well, and secure with another pin (or two!)

The twists will cover up the elastic, and look intricate and interesting paired with a simple pony! Finish with a mist of Kenra Volume 25 to make sure everything stays in place!

Below are the tools I used (or very frequently use) in this tutorial:

Thanks Iana for being my model, thanks Jordan for taking photos, and thanks Mims house for the location!

This is so gorgeous! I never think to do these simple things, but it would be such an easy to way to jazz up my hair!

I was just thinking that it would be great if you could do more things on darker hair! Now, if you could do some makeup on folks who need warmer toned stuff, you and I would be set! If you’re in a pinch for a model I’ll totally come to you!

Agreed! In fact, I had a lady at Sephora tell me that once when I was returning a lipstick…find someone on YouTube with your same skin tone because things will look different! She had suggested Tati, and I watched for a bit. But she is paler than me and her budget is HUGE!

Would love to see something more on the side. I don’t like just a regular ( center in the back) placed ponytail on me.

You can simply move your ponytail off to the side and follow the same steps!

Nope…the twisted side from the side without the pony would never reach all the way.

Well, you have to get creative – maybe you only do the twist on one side. She has older tutorials for side ponytails, I think.

Now that my hair is longer I’ll definitely be trying this – love the tutorial!

This is such a cute ponytail! I have a 4 month old and he is always trying to pull my hair right now so this would be perfect! ?

What does the front look like? I have such a hard time with my hair looking so flat in the front when I do styles like this. It would be so helpful to see the front with the end result as well!

I completely agree with the others, as much I as I really do like my hair color (brunette) I feel it doesn’t seem to have the depth of color as blonds. I chose a picture for my wedding hair and the model was a blond. When the style was on my hair, it just didn’t translate because I kept envisioning a blond. It took a long time for me to identify what was “wrong” so I need to keep looking for ideas on brunettes to get a better idea of how it will look on ME. I have tried a handful of your tutorials and you have encouraged me to branch out. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for this tutorial. I am so uncreative on my own and I love the ideas that you present. I generally watch your tutorials on youtube as I can’t visualize the steps from just text, but the way you photographed this and set out the instructions, it makes sense.

Really, thank you so much.

Did you give your friend this haircut and color? It’s beautiful!!! I’m so afraid to color my dark hair because I’m afraid someone will go too extreme with it, but it has no dimension. I’d like to change things up and I looooove this. What kind of cut and color should I ask my stylist to do to get this look? Thanks so much!

Very Cute and Simple… Even though every time I try one of your tutorials they never come out as pictured! LOL. I’ll attempt this one though, it really is simple! 🙂

This looks simple but so pretty. It would be perfect for work as it looks much more polished than a normal ponytail but still keeps your hair out of your face.
