Rash Guard: why did I wait so long to get one?
Recently I posted a photo on Instagram wearing a rash guard and I was surprised to see all the comments! A few had never even heard of one, and one commenter even said something along the lines of the majority of people wear them in New Zealand!
I’ve always been sensitive to the sun. I remember being on vacation with my family when I was in middle school (peak of coolness, you know) and we were all going to go snorkeling.
I had gotten some of the worst sun poisoning the day before, so the salt water was brutal on my rash. It covered my clavicle area, the tops of my shoulders, and the tops of my hands. I didn’t want to miss out on snorkeling, so I just covered it with medicine and then my mom TAPED RUBBER GLOVES AROUND MY HANDS.
So, just picture for a moment me, a middle school girl in a two piece with flippers, snorkel gear, and rubber gloves tied around her hands. Oh, and my glasses, because I didn’t have contacts yet. Glasses and goggles were a fantastic combination.
Upon entering the water, my gloves filled right up, so I ditched them–but it was a valiant effort on my mom’s behalf.
Anyway, I wish I had taken the plunge into the joy of rash guards sooner but I guess I just felt like they were hot and looked sort of uncomfortable.
I’m here to tell you they are neither of those things. They are made of swimsuit material, very thin, and don’t feel uncomfortable at all. And frankly, being sure I’m not going to get burned or get sun poisoning on my shoulders and arms far outweighs anything else.
As a side note, I had a ton of trouble finding high-neck one pieces this year. I need a high neck and a one piece, because I don’t want to “fall out of” a low cut suit, and my swim time consists of playing! I’m rarely just laying in the pool, so I needed a suit that would work with an active pool time! I bit the bullet on this one and LOVE it. It was a great purchase.
Anyway, the rash guard takes away the picky requirements I had for my one piece suit. I can wear an old two piece that I have laying in my drawer, throw the rash guard on, and suddenly it’s super functional and makes my time in the pool a million times more enjoyable.
Consider me converted. I’m a rash guard girl for life!
If you haven’t yet tried one, whether your skin is sensitive or not, I suggest giving it a shot. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy it, and most importantly–you are being protected from the sun!
