3 steps to prep your hair for re-styling

longhair-1

Everyone knows all about dry shampoo by now, and while that is great for absorbing oil and reviving your root area on day 2 (or 6), the middle and ends of your hair often get left for dead.

Literally.

If you like to restyle on day 2, with or without heat, here are a few key products and tips to help your re-styled hair look just as beautiful as day 1! I’m not including dry shampoo in the list as that would go without saying, but these three steps help you wake up with the middle and ends of your hair looking less like it was slept on, and more like it just needs a little pick-me-up.

  1. Brush it out before bed. Sleeping on hairspray almost never ends well, so grab your paddle brush and smooth through your locks. The only time I would suggest not brushing it out is when you know you’ll be pulling it into a messy bun or braid the next day. The texture of leftover hairspray can be quite nice for both of those styles, it’s just not idea for re-curling or re-smoothing.
  2. Apply an oil or cream to your ends. Oils have long been a “apply to wet OR dry hair” product, but I’m seeing more and more creams and serums for the hair that can be applied dry as well. Most recently I’ve been using the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Fresh Cut Split End Mender and also Kenra’s Revive Oil. The Living Proof product is an absolute game changer in my opinion, and I love how light the Kenra Revive oil is. It also smells a bit masculine to me, which I don’t hate.
  3. Wear it in a loose pony on top of your head, or even a very soft braid. The less crinkling on your pillow, the better! Sometimes this can mean you don’t even need to touch it with heat the next day too! Oh and sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase too!

Hey Kate, thanks for this! I remember from your snapchat a while back that you’ve been going to the gym. How do you keep your hair looking great, even after you’ve gotten sweaty in the gym? I usually wash my hair on Day 4, but I usually feel like I should at least rinse my hair on the days I’ve been to the gym. Any insight would be great! Thanks!

Dry shampoo and a cool shot of the blow dryer!

Do you recommend a dry shampoo? There are so many I don’t know which one to try. Thanks!

I have used many high end brands and the best to date is batiste. They are much less expensive and I find I use less and that there is more is the bottle. I use dry shampoo every other day by the way!

I love batistie! It’s one of my favs or living proof dry shampoo, both work really well!

Hey Kate! Hello from Minnesota. How do you put your hair up when you go to bed? I always end up twisting it and putting it on top with a spin pin, but then the next day it is dead and flat. How do I put it up so that doesn’t happen?

Just a simple high loose ponytail!

Any suggestions on what type of hair tie works best for sleeping? I’ve tried scrunchies (these don’t leave a hair crease for me), but it always seems to fall out during the middle of the night…

Hey Kate, I love your blog and all your tips. I recently cut my hair into a very short angles Bob (right about jawline length) so how would I alter this post for my hair? When I wake my hair is so out of wack I’ve only been able to fix it by washing it. I used a 3 barrel curling iron the other day and that held up better but that would mean no brushing it out at bedtime.

Also, I’ve been having a lot of hair loss due to a huge hormonal change (I had triplets almost 8 months ago) so do you have any advice on how to get through this without going bald? Its been going on for a few weeks now and not letting up. I started taking prenatal vitamins and biotin.

Thanks!

I”m not Kate, but thought I’d offer my input anyway. 🙂

When my hair was that length, I would just pull it into a high half-pony tail with a ribbon hair tie. As for postpartum hair loss, I went through the same thing. It’s very scary, but it will stop! If you’re concerned you are losing too much hair, I would call your doctor. They can probably tell you what’s normal and what’s not. Hope that’s helpful!

Thanks! I’m just now seeing this reply for some reason. The hair loss went on for a few months but I didn’t go bald, lol. Just thinned out quite a bit so I had it cut into a pixie and I’m loving it. I’m going to start growing it back out soon.

I use dry shampoo for Day 2 Day 3, but I’ve noticed, It seems to really dry out my hair. I feel like it breaks my hair and/or makes it more flyaway. Any other tips or suggestions.

Interesting! I’ve noticed that mine gets more oily with the dry shampoo I’m using. Tempted to throw it out and try a different brand. I’m using the Kardashian Beauty one right now. ( I know….I got sucked in.)

Love these tips! I can’t bring myself to splurge on the silk pillowcase, but curious if anyone has tried the satin and truly noticed a difference? Thanks Kate for another great post!

I would like to know this too!

I purchased a satin pillowcase and boy does it make a difference. I have an ear length layered bob which is to short to pull in a pony at night and I would wake up with crazy hair. Now I have less static and hair breakage at the crown and I do not wake up with a birds nest of tangled hair.
Every time Kate talks about silk cases I click on the link to check them out. One day I will trat myself.

The satin pillowcases are great! They keep my hair smooth during the night as I have to be at work at 5:00 AM and usually shower the night before. They are inexpensive on Amazon.

I know this is a late reply but just wanted to throw it out there that I found satin pillowcases at my Dollar Tree by the table linens and napkins area! So far I love them. Less crazy hair and frizz to combat in the morning 🙂

Hi Kate!

I have seen where you recommend a dry spray conditioner and then the Living Proof Split End Mender here. Do you recommend both or do they each do very similar things and one would be sufficient? I wash my hair about twice a week and am very interested in the extra conditioning at the ends and don’t know which to get, or both? I style with a wand or a curling iron.
Thanks for your help!

em says · 03.23.16

i’m not kate, but I use both!
I love the pureology dry conditioner to use on my the part of my fine straight hair that is gray – I am leaving it natural because I am gray (white actually) only at the very front of my head – it is a nice highlight at the part for my darkish brown hair. What I don’t like is the white hair is dry and can look brittle – the dry conditioner is a god send. I use it at night when I pony tail, and again when I style on a no wash day. Helps it become silky like the rest of my hair. I use the cream on my ends to help condition because my hair is long. You could try using both and then stop if it seems too much product for you, but they work for me – Hope that helps.

I always want to re-style on day 2 but can never do it. I am so self conscious that my hair is so greasy, and wearing it in a loose pony only causes kinks and weirdness to my hair. Maybe one day!

Same here! I’d love to stop washing my hair every day but my day 2 hair looks pretty scary.

Anyone have tips on how to prevent creasing when you put your hair up? I can’t even put my hair in a pony or bun for 2 minutes to wash my face at night without my hair creasing and I’ve tried every ponytail holder out there…. even headbands crease my hair!

Reply
Jane says · 04.06.16

I have read that adding some of your liquid conditioner to your elastic band keeps the crease away. Haven’t tried it yet. I like the idea of sleeping with my hair pulled up but I’ve heard it causes breakage.

Hey Kate! I find that when I flat iron my hair on Day 1 that if I want to curl it on Day 2, the curls fall out/won’t hold! Can you give me any suggestions on something I can use to prevent that?

Kate, your hair looks so darn pretty in these pics! I wish my Day 1 hair looked that good -lol ?

Kate, is there another option other than dry shampoo? After having baby number 2 I started using dry shampoo on day 2,3 and sometimes even 4, and I ended up with a lot of shedding, way more than normal and even noticed a balding spot. Do you have any suggestions?

I love using dry shampoo, and did find that my ends were being neglected. I’ve found that applying an oil to my ends really helps. I’ll try putting my hair into a braid before bed next.

Do you use both the Split end mender and revive oil or only one? My ends need help but O don’t want to do so much that it is greasy. Which would you recommend over the other if only using one?

Thanks!

A lot of your awesome up-do tutorials start by creating a “bump” at the top/crown of the hair. How do I keep the bump from splitting naturally where my part is???

Aly says · 09.07.16

Kate! Would you say that this works even if you have heavily styled your hair with hairspray and curls? I find the next day it just feels like a wreck and needs to go up in a bun! Thanks for all your tips!
