A look at David’s 2nd Birthday

The Origins Event Recap + why you need to wander in a store

My baby turned 2 on Sunday!

Two!

We had a small birthday party for him with our closest friends, family, and neighbors. It happened to be about 75 and sunny that day, which feels rather out of place for December, so we took advantage and had the party outside in our backyard.

David woke up in his typical happy mood, and his day was made upon discovering the train table my parents had set up for him the night before.

Justin made him customized pancakes, and then we hung around the house while I started getting organized for the party.

About mid morning, Justin and I were standing roughly 1 foot from David while he played at the kitchen table, and in an instant he was suddenly pinned under our dining room chair. Neither of us saw what actually happened to cause the chair to fall, but there was much blood and crying.

Our hearts broke for him! His upper lip split so deeply and being pinned under the chair scared him! It was his first very major injury, and I held him while his mouth bled all over my shoulder (which I didn’t care about) and at one point through the tears he pulled his head off of my shoulder and said ,”a mess! mess!” and pointed to my blood soaked shirt.

I held him for a long time and after about 30 minutes a new fire truck book from Aunt Lauren helped him rally.

I bought some play tape to tape on the floor for the kids to play with. This stuff was so easy to work with and would be a great travel friendly toy to bring on trips!

We bought a chocolate cake from the grocery store and my mom decorated it with some of David’s trucks, crushed oreos and buncha crunch! David loved it!

After nap he woke up to a special gift from Grams and Grandpa Bryan. We went out to the porch and he opened up a huge dump truck! That was so exciting and I was able to see that he would probably be fine that afternoon.

He was, and had so much fun playing with his new trucks and his friends! He ate 2 servings of cake, and even tried playing a little t-ball.

I was struck, as I walked outside where everyone was during the party, at how many dear friends and family we have that would take time out to celebrate David.

Here’s a little video of highlights from the day. . .

It was a fun day, other than the lip injury, and I think David really had a fun time. He would sing “happy day. . . happy day!” to himself the whole next day.

Thanks so much for sharing your video of David’s birthday! Truly made me smile. I remember those days quite vividly! My baby (Max) is now 9 and I remember when he was David’s age…always a Thomas train in one hand and a car or truck on the other! Our Thomas the Train phase lasted 3 loooooong years! Enjoy the moments – they go by in a flash! ❤️

Thank you for sharing this! Wow, video is so much more powerful on these special days than just images. Can you share what device you used to shoot this? Was it your i-phone or something more technical? I would LOVE to do this for my son’s first birthday in May! 🙂

My little guy got that same dump truck last year for Christmas, and over the past year it has gone EVERYWHERE with us. Camping, outdoor parties, and all over our yard and inside our house 1000 times.

He recently turned two as well, and during that week I had that same feeling of awe when I realized how many people love and care about our family. The important things really came into perspective after becoming a mommy! 🙂

I know you will have such a happy Christmas with both of those wonderful boys! (I laughed out loud at that belly picture) 🙂

Thanks Kate for sharing a little snap shot of David’s birthday. My 40 year old brother had a Tonka dump truck like that. It was passed down to my boys (15 & 10 now) and is still making its way through our family! Probably in the top five favourite toys ever! I recommend a bag of those decorative rocks that are often used in floral arrangements. We kept some in the playroom for “heavy duty construction” play ;). Enjoy!

We had a similar Sunday. My 5 year old fell and knocked her front tooth out. Blood and a tooth with a large root still attached. Ugh. Anyway a visit to the dentist and all is good. She will just be without a front tooth for a long while. Same like you, I think it hurt us more than the kiddo. Bummer but looks like he still had a great birthday!

His reaction to the train table! AH! Aren’t you SO excited for Christmas?! I can’t wait for my boys faces on Christmas morning 🙂

Sorry about the lip 🙁 My 2 year old had his first bout with the Stomach Flu last week (it was rough) and each time he got sick he would point and say “mess.” It was the saddest, and sweetest thing ever.

Wow, I had lost track of your blog and just remembered about it today. The last time I was here you just had David. As I watched this video it brought me to tears. This reminds me so much of my boys. I am also a hairstylist but never really worked much after having, like you, two boys in two years! What a blessing! If I can only go back to that time when they were little. They are teenagers now and I have loved seeing them grow and mature but I miss them being little so much. If there are any words of wisdom here, that would be to treasure these moments (as I’m sure you are) because they will be gone much faster than you can imagine.
