I’ve got a very simple #freshinfifteen video where I somehow managed to have oh pleeeeeeenty of time and then didn’t have time for lip color at the end. Help me.

This round was all about dealing with slept on hair. I used a shampoo and conditioner the day before that I hated so my hair felt both weighed down AND dry–a strange combination. So up it went as I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle it for one more second touching my neck.

Bottoms up folks.

I feel like I do fresh in 15 everyday. Hair always goes up, a little make up goes on, and I’m out the door. I’ve always been too plain to put much time or effort into my look, but since I turned 30 I feel like trying a bit more. I even bought a Mac lipstick over the summer!
Anyways, my question is when you wash your hair at night before bed, do you sleep on a towel or something so your pillow doesn’t get all wet? Or it your hair mostly dry by the time you go to bed?

Reply
Kate says · 09.21.15

I blow dry my hair before I go to bed! Enjoy your Mac lipstick!

I so hear you on the postpartum lash situation! I was thinking maybe lash extensions? Is that silly? I would totally be down to try Lattise…but I remember being scared of the warning about it darkening/changing your eye color? Maybe that’s not a thing anymore 🙂

Have you heard of Mary Kay’s Lash Serum? It’s basically Latisse without the side effects. Check it out!

I’m wondering about latisse, but I’m afraid it’ll change my eye color! Wasn’t a potential side effect changing blue eyes into brown? I got trial lash extensions for my wedding and I haaated them. I’m not sure if it was just the person who put mine on, or how they all are, but they were heavy and pinched the skin and were constantly in my eye view. I’m currently trying castor oil (because I’ll literally try anything!) and haven’t noticed a huge difference, but maybe I just need to keep it up?

Reply
Emma P. says · 09.21.15

Julia have you tried a Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® Lavender Oil? You can add a drop or two to your mascara tube and/or mix 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil with 2-4 drops lavender essential oil and use your finger or a cotton swab to apply it along your eyelash roots down to the ends of your eyelashes. Plus it smells awesome 🙂

Reply
Maegan says · 09.21.15

I use lavender in my mascara too! I first tried it to moisten out the ends of an old tube I had (which was a great way to extend the product) and then I used it in a new tube and it works amazingly well! I haven’t tried your tip about putting it on my eyes at the end of the night, but I’ll do that next! Thanks for sharing!

US a drop of lavender essential oil in your mascara. You will have longer thicker lashes in a few weeks. I personally couldn’t live without adding it to mine. Also always swirl mascara.

For the post partum lashes have you tried adding lavender essential oil to your mascara? I add 2 drops of young living essential lavender oil to a new tube of mascara (you can add to one that’s already open). it helps keep your mascara From drying out as well. It’s done wonders for me as far as keeping my lashes healthy and from falling out. plus it’s super cheap and easy since you only need to add it in once.

Kate – your blog is my FAVORITE! Literally, my husband just walked through and saw the video on my computer and said, “What are you watching?” I said, “Oh, my favorite hair girl!”

I have used Latisse with NO SIDE EFFECTS (other than crazy awesome, long, thick lashes) for 2+ years now. I interrogated my Dermatologist PA about Latisse and the side effects, and she assured me it was safe. I have blue eyes with blonde lashes that need a little oomph. Like I said, no change in the color of my eyes AT ALL. There can be some itching/redness on the eyelid while the product dries, but nothing I can’t handle. My PA gave the insider’s hint NOT to use the disposable brushes that come with it. Just use a clean, fine eyeliner brush and wash after each use. I leave it out to dry overnight. This makes the (very expensive) Latisse lash longer. (I can use one 5 ml bottle for a whole year.) I get mine filled at Costco, they have the cheapest price.

I have tried other “lash serums” with some success, but nothing close to the Latisse! WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Reply
Sarah Chatfield says · 09.21.15

I’ve been using LATISSE for almost three months. I’ve noticed a huge change in the length. My friend began using it at the same time and noticed a huge change in the amount of lashes. I’m really happy with it, even though I didn’t see much difference until week 4. I wear contacts and noticed some stinging the first week but now I don’t experience anything like that. I also don’t use it every night any more – just every other night. I did notice some darkening at the upper eyelid right above my lash line that looked like a persistent mascara smudge, but that has lessened quite a bit. I have grey eyes and haven’t noticed any eye darkening. 🙂 I’m 34 and have a 9 mo baby and had massive hair loss during the 3rd Tri and the first six months postpartum…

Kate, are you going to share what shampoo/conditioner you hated?

Reply
Jane says · 09.21.15

LATISSE is UNREAL!!! Do it! Takes 16 weeks, so be patient. My lashes are so long, they sometimes touch my glasses and I have to be really careful that my mascara doesn’t smudgy my upper eye before it drys. Super long! Would never go without Latisse. Get it online for the cheapest price. Do i for 16 weeks, then it’s like 2-3x a week for maintenance.

Reply
Sarah says · 09.21.15

I’ve used Latisse for about two years. It definitely works for me and I haven’t had any adverse effects. It’s pricey, though. Now, I use it about three days a week for maintenance.

Reply
Caroline says · 09.21.15

I just really hate that the 3d+ doesn’t work for you. I use it daily and love it. I never have fall out even when applying and I have found that LESS is more with the gel. I HATE really wet mascara and I can only put on one coat as a starting point. Also the new gel recommends NOT putting on a base mascara so maybe there was just too much product. I saw a huge clump fall off your wand and that has also never happened to me. I think you just have too much product on the wands when using it. Also not finishing with the younique wand may be an issue too because the new wand combs through the lashes to give a good non clumpy final result. Oh well though. Different strokes for different folks. Love fresh in fifteen!!

So, you were talking about your lashes in this video. I believe you use Young Living Essential Oils. If you have Lavender at your home, put 3 drops in your mascara. It will help you lashed grow!!
I use to have really short lashes and now they are long and full!!!

It will also help keep the bacteria out of your macara. They only thing you really have to be careful with is if you are really tired and poke yourself in the eye! I did and the lavender burned for about 45 seconds. I did not have any issues after so all is well. Just be careful lol

(My salon suggested Kevin Murphy) And I love wearing my hair curly but am really struggling now as a mom finding time to style it everyday. Help a sista out! I love your blog, thanks for keeping things real!

Hey Kate, just a warning…I’m one of those “coconut oil fixes everything” people….but about 4 months ago I started using it as an eye make-up remover. Which, it works amazingly! And it doesn’t sting my eyes like most other products I’ve used in the past. But recently Ive noticed, just as a bonus side effect I guess, that my lashes are actually longer and fuller than they used to be…and I don’t really have anything else to credit for it because nothing else has changed….so if you want a cheaper more natural option than Latisse….idk…give it a try. I highly recommend it!

You look so much better than I do after 30 minutes of trying. I think I’d rather take your postpartum lash loss over my postpartum hair loss. My bangs have come in and they look like a first grader did my hair cut before picture day (or maybe that’s just my childhood story).
I would love to see a video of you trying out falsies. I’ve never been a fan of younique, and a lot of beauty youtubers use falsies, so,nI would love to see you with some on. I bet it would cover your thinner lashes. If you have any tips on how to cover my baby bangs, I would love to hear them. Thanks for always putting yourself out there.

Lash extensions! Seriously, you should consider them if you’re really into full long lashes. I always resisted getting them because it seems really high maintenance, but they were a total game changer for me and not as difficult or expensive as I imagined they’d be. For the first time in my life I have felt like I can go out with little to no makeup and not look homeless (I’m blonde, too). Also, shortly after getting them there were multiple random people who stopped to tell me I am “so pretty” etc. (eesh, that sounds grossly braggy). This has never really happened to me before and the only thing that had changed was the lash extensions. Perhaps it was a coincidence, but I’m telling you – I love them. It also saves a lot of time with makeup because I no longer need mascara or eyeliner (I used to never leave the house without either). Phew. That was long. I promise I don’t belong to the lash extension cult on a mission to convert everyone, but it seems like something you’d like.

I LOVED how you did your messy bun!!! I have a new haircut though where I have some bangs on one side and more layers and some thinning. I had had a haircoloring incident. I am more gray hairs just at the very top of my head. (How weird!) So I feel like I HAVE to color my hair. Plus I wanted to go a more dark auburn for fall. I have blue eyes with freckles and my friend who has cut my hair for years says my hair looks really good that color. Well, she has been busy with her first grandbaby. So I decided to do it myself. I could not find an “auburn” color that I liked because my hair already has the red tint to it. So I bought two boxes of dark brown. Well had a blunder and ended up with black hair just around my face and dark reddish brown everywhere else. BLAH!! So I HAD to go in and get someone to fix it. Now it is a cinnamon color. I like wearing it up on the days when I’m home and not going to see anyone. I have 3 kinds of arthritis and 2 autoimmune diseases so I need hairstyles I can do easily. I can send you pics of my new cut but I don’t know how to attach pics on here. If you will explain to me how I would be more than happy to. Thank you for all that you do with these videos. I really enjoy. And I really enjoy hearing about your family. I was a teacher for 25 years and I miss dealing with kids and their families. Hope you are enjoying the beginnings of Autumn. Even though it is warmer here I still love the Fall!!! Oh by the way the Makeup Forever White HD Finishing Powder that you put under your eyes to keep the lash fibers from sticking, Pixi has a dupe for that. Just FYI. Worth checking out. I like it okay.

My $0.02 on Latisse: I am a pharmacist, so I have seen patients on it and the glaucoma version (i.e. little old ladies who have glaucoma who also have beautiful lashes; glaucoma is what it was originally used for). If you see the side effect of darker eyes written somewhere – it can happen, but it’s much more likely for the people using it for glaucoma. It will NOT be covered by insurance, and it will be expensive (likely more than $100 a month). And if you stop using it, the effects will wear off. All that to say — it will work. Depends on how important that is to you, and how much you are willing to pay.
p.s. When you said “I like big buns” the first thing that came to my head was…”I like big buns and I cannot lie…all you other brothers” – you get the jist : P
p.p.s. if you do get Latisse, you might get “hypotrichosis” added to your problem list. It’s the medial term for “not enough lashes”

I used Latisse for many years. Yes, your lashes grow & get thicker noticeably within 4 weeks & keep growing. Yes, if you stop, your lashes get back to normal, due to the natural process of shedding. Finally, if you would start using every other day after you achieved a longer & thicker lash, the new lashes don’t grow in as fast. Moral of this story is if you start, don’t stop. Why would you…..your lashes look FABULOUS !!!!

P.S. My eyelids did redden a little bit but my makeup covered it. I was also more sensitive to the sun. I’m now trying extensions in which I like them too (wanted to take a break from the Latisse).

An addendum to my Latisse reply yesterday: Be sure to get it online and get the big bottle for more savings. This big bottle will last you MONTHS. Here’s how. Ditch ALL of the stupid brushes they include with your Latisse. Worthless. I’m sure you have an angled eyeliner brush…well, get one like that. Then, put ONE drop of Latisse in the lid of the bottle and use that ONE drop for both eyelash lines each night. This makes your product last a very very long time and makes Latisee a very cost-effective way to have lush, long, and full lashes.

I have STUBS for lashes and I asked my eye doctor about Latisse. He said it works for sure but the minute you stop, it stops working. I can’t afford to keep that up.

tarte concealor. It’s my favorite and has been for years. I use the little sponge thingy they recommend and love it. I use “light” but I use medium in their foundation in the summer and light in the winter.

I got the tarte fibers and they look great but I feel like someone is stabbing me in the eyes the whole time I wear them. Good times.

For real, Kate, I have to figure out why I do my makeup in a totally backwards order as you. You are the expert! The order I was taught: SPF face cream, foundation, concealer, setting powder, eye shadow, eye liner, eye lashes, blush, bronzer, brows, lips

P.S. I love reading your blog comments.

Kate, I just want to thank you for your blog! I’m learning so much. Love the hair tutorials and have just started with the fresh in fifteens. Question on the lash fibers. I have just started using them and love them but I find they are kind of hard to remove. What product do you use? Also, the Tarte mascara, do you use waterproof or non waterproof? Most of my family is celiac so we are trying to use gluten free products. Are there other Tarte products you use/like? Again, thank you!

Hi Kate,

Do we all look a bit alike without makeup, or what? (Refreshing to see the before/after, as are your ideas). Cute kiddo pix — love them! (Kiss those little kid cheeks as long as you can. Our boys are 21 and 19: obviously can’t do that anymore!)

I love chocolate (and, sorry to inform you, most things pumpkin).

Q: just got “Unite Boing” and really like it. Had been using only “It’s a 10.” Do you have an opinion re “It’s a 10” v. “Unite 7 Seconds Leave-in spray conditioner,” and if it is necessary to even use one of the latter in addition to “Boing?”
