A major makeover

November Beauty Favorites

Have you ever gone into something having no idea how it will turn out, only to be so surprised at how amazing it is? That was my experience with Space Off, a tv show on The Design Network. The Design Network is an in-house network of Furniture Land South, and ridiculously huge and beautiful furniture store in High Point, North Carolina.

so8

The concept of the show Space Off is basically this: 2 design teams battle to decorate a room, but there is only one winner.

When I was initially contacted and asked if I was interested in a room makeover, I have to be honest and tell you that I was skeptical. I can be annoyingly picky (picture my mom’s eyes rolling because they are), and wasn’t sure how some designers who don’t know my style or preferences could design a room for me.

I floated the idea past my husband one evening and he basically said, “Yeah you better say yes! That sounds awesome!”

So, now that I have a beautifully decorated bedroom by professional designers, I am able to see the big, BIG difference between my uncreative minimal style and what I want my style to look like. And I love my room so much and am so thankful for the experience!

Note to self: LET THE PROFESSIONALS DO THEIR THING. IT’S WORTH IT.

So, in a nutshell here is how everything went down:

-I had a brief skype session with both design teams. I really liked both of the teams right off the bat, but since the sessions were so short I wasn’t sure if I had explained myself well in order to tell them what I liked. In hindsight, I had nothing to worry about.

so7

-The awesome crew of Space Off came to my house and worked long hours installing both room designs. I sent David to hang with my mom for the day, and locked myself in my office for hours waiting for the big reveal. I made sure to not take a single peek when I snuck downstairs for water or snacks. It was hard to sit in the house and hear all the work without sneaking out to peek, but I managed to stay strong!

For reveal time, I had butterflies in my stomach! I had no idea what to expect on the other side of the door, and with both rooms I was so surprised to see what the designers chose.

In the end, I got to choose (and keep) one room design, and got to pick a winning team to advance to the next part of the challenge.

You’ll have to watch the episode to see who won, and see the beautiful rooms too!

I’ll be sure to share a post next week with many more details about the room design that won!

Huge, huge thank you to everyone on Space Off for letting me be a part of something so cool. You were an absolute pleasure to work with, and you have no idea what a treat it was to have a master bedroom makeover!

Both rooms were beautiful, but I would have picked the same one you did!!! What a cool experience.

Is it bad that I’m squealing more at the adorable cat pictures than of the room details?

I am looking forward to watching to episode later today but I have to admit that I completely agree with Caitlin and I am loving the pictures of Grits and Gravy!!

You picked the best one!! The iron bed and blue bench completely sold me, and that huge dresser!! Gorgeous. What a fun experience 🙂

I agree with you the decision would be so hard! Both rooms had designs that I loved! They did a great job at matching your style with their designs! I have to say I think I would have chosen the same room as well!

Lauren says · 12.04.14

What an amazing opportunity! Both rooms looked amazing, but I would have chosen the one you did just b/c that bench and those colors looked amazing together. It was simple but elegant looking and that rustic tall dresser was just beautiful.

So fun! What a neat experience! You really couldn’t have gone wrong with either option! Love the choice you made. Truly a classic, soothing retreat!

First of all, you look absolutely gorgeous! Pregnancy looks fantastic on you! I completely agree with the room you chose. The blue accents with the gray wall looks amazing! The huge dresser is to die for as well! Enjoy your new space! What an awesome experience!

Definitely David and Catherine’s, the one you chose.
The pictures in the wall and the 2 furniture pieces are what made me like it.
The first one was bland and missed something, in my opinion. Maybe it missed pictures over the bed.
Good choice. Beautiful bedroom.

Jaime says · 12.04.14

Such a cool experience! You chose the right one for sure!

Reply
Jenny says · 12.04.14

Wow! Such a hard choice. Before you choose I had totally picked #2. The first room was beautiful but a little to clean. The second room popped but in a soft beautiful way. It was so cool watching. Oh and I am really good at guessing what babies will be and you are a hard one. But…. I think you are having a boy! Enjoy your new room. Loved watching.

Reply
Michelle says · 12.04.14

When I saw the second room get started I thought you would pick the first room. And then they did a final shot of each bed and I realized that first room colors were very muted and I liked the second one better (which I hadn’t while watching the second room being done!)

I think it is very cool that you got to participate in the make over. I love the design you chose and I hope you are very happy in there!

I totally agree with your choice! I felt that was the one you would choose! That little secretary is just adorable. I have ordered furniture from Furnitureland South on several occasions (I live in Missouri) and was pleased every time. Their delivery and customer service was excellent!

Ok let me preface this by saying I’m 7 weeks pregnant and slightly hormonal, but I teared up at the beginning when they did the sort of montage of your hair tutorials and blog recap, just thinking of how far you’ve come over these past few years. I’ve been following you since almost the beginning of this blog and really, I just love it and you (and David and Justin lol).

ANYWAY, prego emotionalness over, I LOVE room number 2, I seriously want that bed SO bad now. Great choice!

Kate says · 12.04.14

That is SO NICE! Thank you for following along over the years, your comment has simply made my day!

I thought, over 100 videos?? It feels like just yesterday I found you and watched all the videos in one week (it was about 20 at that time). After the first room I thought oh this is definitely the room. i didn’t think I’d like another room better than that one but the second one was even better! Good choice.

Umm I am not even preggers, and I did the exact same thing! I’ve been following for years and it was so cool to see the flashbacks of the tutorials.

Hey Kate!
What a terrific opportunity! As I was watching the episode, I had a feeling you’d pick the room you did. The room is beautiful!

Reply
valerie says · 12.04.14

First, I’m loving this entry. It’s fresh and different from the usual. Second, what a fun experience to have. You picked the room I would have. It looked very finished. To be honest I would remove a few wall pieces, but better to be in a position to reduce than add. For me the real selling point of the second one, was the mixture of industrial materials, i.e. the iron one the bench and nightstand with the softness of the bedding and other fabrics. Thanks for sharing!

Reply
Andrea says · 12.04.14

i liked both rooms, but preferred the one you chose. I wish missy and Lee would have accessorized the room more. It just looked unfinished, especially with nothing in the walls behind the bed.

Reply
Paulette says · 12.04.14

Wow!! What a difficult decision. I have to agree with your choice because the second room was so much warmer even with the ‘industrial’ pieces. Perhaps it was the accessories which made the difference. Loved the tall dresser..the wood tone really warmed the space? Stunning! I know you’ll totally love retreating in this lovely room. P.S. – loved that chair in the first room!

Reply
Runt says · 12.04.14

Both rooms really were great! I would have chosen the same room you picked. The first room was really pretty, but it almost looked bare. I like that the second room definitely filled the space more, without it being cluttered at all. And that secretary – loooove.

Reply
Lindsay Shields says · 12.04.14

Both rooms were beautiful but the one you chose was definitely the right one. Right away I could tell when they were shopping which you would choose based on some of their selections. It was a very well put together room and suited your taste perfectly.

Reply
Meg says · 12.04.14

I figured that’s the choice you’d make! It screamed Kate! I’ve never seen a dresser with so many drawers! Although i have to say the headboard in space number one was to die for… So unique. And the chair was dynamite. I probably would have chosen that space for myself, although I agree with others that accessories lacked a bit. The display shelving between the doors was a nice touch as well; maybe you can incorporate something similar into your new space somehow 😉 Hope you enjoy your time in there and good luck with delivery of baby no 2!

Hi Kate!
I found your blog through pinterest and just love all your tutorials! I am a new mom and I love your beauty tips. When my baby was first born, I never did my hair or makeup because I never really left the house, but on one of your posts you talked about how spending just a few minutes to get yourself ready can do wonders, it really spoke to me. I have started incorporating some of your makeup and hairstyles into my routine. Thanks for all you do!

As far as this post, I thought you picked a great option — that’s what I would have picked, too! I love the blue tones and the industrial look to the room. Enjoy your new space and I wish you a healthy delivery with baby number two!

Lorrie says · 12.04.14

I love the 2nd room! Especially the huge chest and all the wall art. The colors are beautiful!

Reply
Robin Karber says · 12.04.14

I adored all of the pretty details of the second room, I would have absolutely chosen that design, too. I loved that first piece they showed off in the first room though, with the jewelry storage. I can feel my wheels turning for my own space!

Reply
Jasmin says · 12.04.14

I would have chosen the same design you did! Love it!

Reply
Whitney says · 12.04.14

I also would have chosen the same room you did! That tall desser was amazing! And I felt that it was the more ‘decorated’ room. The first one looked a little bare and boring to me.

Reply
Michele says · 12.04.14

I think I probably would have went with room number two as well. But I would have begged to have that big headboard bed from #1, in with the #2 blue accented room. Though I know mixing and matching was probably not part of the rules. Both were great, but 2 was my choice. What a cool experience to have with this.

You look radiant and beautiful by the way.

You hair videos and make up tips have truly helped me over the years. Now that my daughter is 6, she watches them and we do her hair “the Kate way” she calls it. Up until discovering your blog, I literally had a total of 3 hairstyles. Boring !!! I think sometimes it’s the simplest of things, you’ve showed how to do what’s easy to you, but hard for people like me, and it can be done. My hair and appearance thanks you and appreciates the work you’ve done on this blog. It’s making a difference.

Reply
Laura says · 12.04.14

You picked the one that I liked best! There was just something about it that made it feel more cozy. That was fun to watch and it made me want to go visit Furniture Land South. I live in Greensboro, so it’s really close for me!

Katherine says · 12.04.14

Hi Kate!

What a cool experience! While both rooms were beautiful I think you made the right choice with room # 2. It seemed to have the perfect balance of items and style for both you and Justin and the colour scheme was gorgeous!

On a side note – I loved the white top you wore during the reveal for room # 2. Can you share where it is from?

I love following along with your blog and reading it has become a part of my morning routine with my cup of coffee each day! You have done such an incredible job growing your blog over the years and have become a staple in a lot of women’s lives. Congrats!

Reply
Madeline says · 12.04.14

I think you chose the right room! I liked the headboard in the other room, but I’m so OCD that the mix and match furniture pieces would drive me nuts. Both color schemes were beautiful, but the blue accents in the room you chose are to die for (the bench = amazing). I have a family friend that works in the furniture business in High Point, and now I want to ask him to come redesign my room.

What a cool experience 🙂

Erica says · 12.04.14

I didn’t see your big mirror in the makeover at first and I thought, “Do they know she shows us her style on Instagram from that mirror?! We need that mirror!” Lol. But then I saw it and the panic was gone 🙂 Looks like both teams really nailed your style! I love the one you chose, that was my favorite too.

Reply

Hands down, I knew #2 was more your style. All the furniture and accessories tied together nicely. It was warm and inviting. #1 was mismatched and almost gave me a headache. So Great choice!!!

Number two was much better for me, love the blue details, even though I would choose another style for the bed (much bigger headboard) but I still like that one. I had a feeling you were gonna choose number two because of your reaction when you first saw it. You really liked it, lol. It was a great choice. Enjoy it!

You picked the right room! The first one seemed a little empty and ho hum, they could of did so much more with accessories and they didn’t. They could of went a little bolder tying in that chair they chose, but it fell flat.

I love the episode and the room you picked! So sweet how the host brought his daughter along. I think what really won me over with the room you chose was the mix of masculine and feminine… that is so perfect in a master bedroom. All the details too made it feel so “collected” and personal. Hope you’re enjoying your new room!

So fun! I agree with your decision! At first I loved the first design liked so much about the room, but when the second design was revealed I was blown away. I loved how colorful but soft the room was, and that it parts were rustic but finished. It had a very sweet but opulent feel. Great choice! I’m so jealous of that master bedroom! Congrats!

Lynnetta says · 12.04.14

What an amazing experience to get picked to do! I think that the first room was missing something. That headboard was amazing but I think some art on either side of the bed would have pushed the first room a little more. That second room though, I could live in that room! It has two elements that I have been obsessing over for my own room but are not in the budget right now – the iron bed and the tufted bench. A bench at the end of my bed is a dream. You made the right choice!

What a great way to start my morning! I picked the same, room #2 but there were elements of the first room that I loved, too. (I might have combined some things and made up room #3. ha ha!) But I agree with the others, the cats stole the show! The only bad things about watching the video were cruising the furniture store site afterwards and the urge to redecorate. ; )

Reply
Dana says · 12.04.14

In all honesty, I didn’t care for either one, and I could totally sense from your reactions that you felt the same way. The furniture and art prints look cheap, random, and don’t flow nicely. It doesn’t seem to be your style at all. I think your original bedroom pieces looked better, it just needed some additional, finishing touches to make it more cozy and work friendly. I loved the cats making their debut, also.

I would have gone with the same room. I love blue right now. And I’m looking forward to someday being able to redo my room. My house was originally a model home – built in 1999. We bought it as a foreclosure that had been empty at “least” a year. They did nothing to update the house. Walls are torn up, carpets are hideous and filthy. I wish a team like this would come and give my room a facelift! Your room turned out beautifully!

How lucky you are and what a tough decision you had! My own master bedroom is under construction and this show gave me ideas. I think I would have picked the 2nd bedroom! Enjoy your new digs – get in that bed as much as you can!

I actually would have picked the other room – I LOVED that headboard. Both of them were great though! Thanks for sharing, this was fun to see!

I knew you would pick that room!! It had such a WOW factor to it. I would have totally picked the same one. I’ve followed your blog so long that throughout the whole video, I found myself saying “Oooh, Kate’s gonna love that…that’s Kate’s favorite color”. Seriously…it’s like I know you! That tufted bench is GORGEOUS and I love the color. That room just looked more plush and “finished” in my opinion. Such a fun experience. Where can I sign up to participate??

Loved both but I would have picked the same thing as you. LOVED those night stands!! Colors were beautiful as well!

I would’ve picked the room you picked. It was so beautiful and I thought the steel would’ve made the room look too cold but it worked out beautifully. The blue accents were gorgeous as well.

Ok I can’t imagine how hard it was to make a decision. Both rooms were so cute! I did find it funny that the designers names were Katherine and David. 😉

You picked the right one in my opinion. The first one seemed not you at all! The darker wood pieces seemed “to old” for you. Enjoyed the show though!

I would have chosen the same room that you ultimately chose. I LOVE it. Do you have sourcing info on the secretary and the oversized dresser? They are exactly what I’m looking for in my bedroom!

This was so fun to watch! I would have decided on the same room you did. I loved that the designers paid attention to the height of the room and placed pictures along the entire wall of where your bed was placed. It felt like the more complete design. 🙂

Thanks for sharing 🙂

PS I loved that Grits and Gravy made an appearance too!

What a fun experience! It was really interesting to watch the whole process. At first, I thought you would probably pick the first room. Especially when I saw the beginning of the second room. It was amazing how once you saw the whole room put together…the second one really seemed like the right choice! I have been trying to incorporate a mix of older pieces I can’t bear to part with, alongside newer much needed furniture in my own home…. and this really gave me some insight about mixing things up a bit.

I would have picked the same as you. Loved it! I loved all the blues, and the secretary!

Crystal says · 12.05.14

So they were both pretty, but with the first room, all I could think about was how dusty your jewelry would get on that shelf. lol Glad you picked the second one! : )

I am in love with that huge dresser !! Do you know where they bought it Kate?!

Lisa says · 12.05.14

I would have absolutely chosen the same design you chose Kate, however, I think I would have liked a different bed but everything else was just lovely!

Although both rooms were beautiful the one you chose was amazingly gorgeous! I would have picked that one myself.

The second room is so very close to what I’m trying to accomplish in my own bedroom. You definitely made the right choice (even though the first was lovely) Can you tell me the color of the paint on your walls?

So I know this is going to sound super dumb but your blog is totally getting me through another deployment. Getting to veg out at night, watch your videos and read your blog is one of the best parts of my day. I may or may not have squealed watching this video thinking “oh my gosh I KNOW her!” Yeah in my dreamworld. Any who, LOVE that 2nd design. I’m gonna have to take notes for when we put down roots and buy our first house.

Kate says · 12.06.14

Love them both. The first felt less “finished” to me yet nice and simple and clean. I love the wood tones of the dresser in the second room, and the rustic feel over all (and the blue!). I love the furniture in the second and they’re more of a change from what you had before. Good choice!

How fun!!! I had a gut feeling you were going to choose the one you did. They were both great designs but that one just positively screamed “KATE!” 🙂

I really loved that artwork, the chair, and the shelf (with the jewelry) from the first design, but ultimately I agreed the second design was the best in the way that the whole room came together. You had a hard choice!

Roannie says · 12.07.14

I chose the same room you chose! It just had more character to it. I do like the simpler things when decorating but character will always win in my book! It looked beautiful!!

Both designs were truly stunning, but I have to agree with you on design two. The room is calming and inviting. The colors are beautiful; love all the different textures. It all just has such a light and airy feel to it. I wouldn’t want to leave the room. Love the idea of the small work space, but with tons of storage. I knew you would pick design 2. It’s exquisite!
