Cleansing Dry Skin with POND’S

I’ve been using POND’S Original Fresh Wet Cleansing Towelettes for years. In fact, I cannot even remember a time I removed makeupΒ without using them. Whenever I strayed to a different brand or even a generic brand, I always ended up with either break outs or irritated eyes. POND’S has been a trusted brand in the beauty realm for over 50 years, so it’s easy to see how they’ve nailed down great quality products that are available at drugstores nationwide.

Since POND’S seems to mesh well with my skin, I was excited to give the POND’S Cold Cream Cleanser and POND’S Evening Soothe Wet Cleansing Towelettes a try. The aroma of the Evening Soothe towelettesΒ alone is reason enough to use them. It felt like such a luxurious experience to remove my makeup and cleanse my skin. A little tip I have for removing extra stubborn eye makeup is to run one end of the cloth under the faucet to create a little bit more of a “suds” and press that on your eyes to soften the makeup. I wear a lot of mascara, so I’ve found that pressing an extra-moistened towelette on my eyes before attempting to work the makeup off is much kinder on my lashes.

The POND’S Cold Cream Cleanser is perfect for these dry winter months ahead. And it’s both gentle and effective.

The last thing I want to spend time on in the morning is covering up any blemishes, and these products have helped me maintain blemish-free skin while also keeping it nice and hydrated.

My skin is prone to dryness in the first place, but especially in the winter I find that dry patches and irritation is common. Here are a few tips on cleansing dry or sensitive skin in the winter months:

1. Don’t use piping hot water. I know it’s much more relaxing to use hot water when you are washing your face, but the hot water can end up being a little bit too harsh and cause extra dryness in the end. Luke warm is best!

2. Don’t rub your skin with a washcloth afterwards. Pat it dry instead! This motion will be a little bit more gentle on fragile parts of the face.

3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drink plenty of water AND use a good moisturizer. Both will contribute greatly to well-hydrated skin throughout dryer months.

In anticipation of the 2014 holiday season, POND’S, the classic beauty brand trusted by generations of loyal followers, is teaming up with the Rockettes, the legendary precision dance company, to encourage women to kick off an effective, Rockettes-approved skincare routine and enter for a chance to go behind the curtain at Radio City Music Hall this December.

One lucky winner will be chosen following the end of the contest. Each person who enters will have the opportunity to win a two-day Manhattan getaway to meet the Rockettes and attend the Radio City Christmas Spectacular this December.

Entering the contest is easy! Just visit the main campaign landing page and scroll down and fill out the sweepstakes form.

This post was sponsored by POND’S, but all opinions are my own.

What a timely post. I’m up at the crack with my sick babe AND I’ve been on the lookout for new makeup removing wipes. I currently use the Costco brand which used to have a nice fresh scent, and removed makeup like a charm, but I think they’ve reformulated. Now they’re scented almost exactly the same at the baby wipes I use from Costco. Not the best scent association to have on your face. I’ll be stopping at Walgreens today. Thanks!

I’m trying to figure out if you really like Ponds that much or is it a paid endorsement. You had me going, was thinking about trying it, and then the last paragraph is all about entering a contest or something Ponds is promoting and I totally lost interest.

susan – totally agree. I don’t have a problem with a paid endorsement, but state that upfront, not at the end. example: corporette.com. She says a post is paid endorsement at the very beginning and links to her endorsement policy. Helps to clarify things for the reader up front.

I do love the POND’S brand, and as I mentioned in the post I have been using the Original Wet Cleansing Towelettes for years! I get to choose which brands I work with here on The Small Things Blog and would only choose a brand I could 1. be honest about and 2. would fit the general nature of the blog in the first place (aka beauty blog)

I’m a little bummed this is sponsored but hopefully you do really love Pond’s because I certainly do! That cold cream cleanser is so gentle and removes the most stubborn makeup (Kat von D everlasting lipstick, anyone?). I’ve used it for 15 years.

Have you used the Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser with your Clarisonic? Just wondering how the two would work together.

Reply
Kate says · 11.10.14

I haven’t tried that yet!

Reply
Caitlin says · 11.10.14

Hope you don’t mind me chiming in! I’ve used the two together. The Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser is very thick and leaves sort of an oily residue behind on my skin. I find the Clarisonic lessens that oily feeling, but gets “left behind” on the brush head. I like using The Body Shop’s Aloe Cream Cleanser with my Clarisonic, but Ponds is definitely known as a cult favorite (just not mine :)).

I’m with Susan. It makes me sad to see this blog going in the direction it’s going. Were you required to mention their brand name acertain number of times in this post? I felt like I was reading the “about us” section on a pond’s website, not a blog post.

Reply
Kate says · 11.10.14

I’ve been working with company’s on collaborative posts since very early 2011, so this isn’t a new direction. POND’S asked that the full product name be shared instead of simply using the phrase “cold cream” or “cleansing wipes”.

Kate, don’t worry about it. You explained things perfectly. People will always find things to complain about. This is an optional blog to read – it’s not like they are paying for read this. You do a great job and I love reading your product reviews.

First of all, I don’t have a problem with paid endorsements, especially for a good product, which ponds is. I’ve used both of those products and loved them, although I only use the cold cream cleanser in the winter, it’s too much for my skin in the summer. I also LOVE their bb cream. It’s great for my skin and helps cover the redness which is my biggest problem. If you ever want to try a drugstore bb cream, try the ponds.

Reply
Theresa B says · 11.10.14

Yes, the Ponds BB Cream is the best! I’ve been using it as my primary foundation lately. If I feel like I need (or want) a more coverage foundation kind of day, I’ll use it as my primer under another foundation. But lately, my skin looks better and I need less foundation these days.

I so agree with the dislike for all the negative comments. Now that I’m a mother I spend a lot more time on blogs and forums and have definitely learned that a lot of women seem to enjoy complaining and almost hope someone will do something disagreeable just so they can vent about it. Kate’s blog is her business and she is being a smart business woman by utilizing all the advantages including endorsements. There are still great beauty and parenting tips on here. Comment on the stuff you like and if there’s a post you don’t agree with, just move on. You can’t make 100% of people happy 100% of the time.

Here’s another tip for being gentle with your face. I bought a microfiber dish towel to use on my face. It’s so gentle and feels great. When I wash it, I just let it air-dry as not to ruin any absorbency with the dryer sheets.

Funny the timing of seeing your post this morning. I spent yesterday morning “researching” Ponds because I was going to add it to my must try list. I found a bunch of blog posts that said the formula changed about 2 years ago and now has things that are bad for your skin and for many, irritated since the change. Many mentioned the 7 original ingredients which is now a lot more. Having never used it before, it convinced me to not buy it. Now you have me second guessing. While this is a paid endorsement, I still trust that you trust the product to put it here and it seems you used it prior. Did you notice a change in the ingredients or have any of your readers?

Reply
Kate says · 11.10.14

I haven’t noticed a change at all, but the only product I’ve been using absolutely consistently for years is the Original Wet Cleansing Towelettes. I’ve bounced back and forth between other products but never go without those. Be sure to check the return policy of the store you bought the products from–you may be surprised to learn what you can return if it doesn’t work for you!

I am happy to hear about the Ponds Make-up remover wipes. I am currently using the Neutrogena ones and they are so harsh on my skin. They burn my face. I have very sensitive skin so I just thought it was just my skin but the perfume in them is so strong. Also I absolutely love all your blogs. You have taught me so many ways to do my hair and with all your make-up tips i love. I have used a lot of the products you put out there and I have loved everyone of them that I have tried. The eye liners have been really gentle on my eyes to. If peoe don’t like the fact that you do endorsements for the companies then they not need to watch you. Rachel – is there a movement going/a way to advocate for testing products on death row inmates? I’ve thought for years they are an untapped gold mine and I would support that. I’m not joking here – I think that if suitable, they should be required to donate one kidney and new foods, drugs, and products should be tested on them instead of animals.

I agree, a lot of touchy commenters today. The cold cream cleanser was the only product I could use when I moved back to the west after three years of Pennsylvania humidity. My skin got so dry here, and every cleanser just made it angry. But, Ponds was gently enough clean without irritating. I’ll have to try the cleansing wipes-I am so lazy about washing my face, so wipes are my saviors!

Dang, sounds like some readers need to cheers to a second round of coffee this morning! I love your product and styling recommendations! I have purchased MANY of your recommendations, including the Ponds wipes, I love them! I’ve been using the aloe day moisturizer from The Body Shop (your recommendation) for several months now, and love it. However, the dry cold is really setting in now, here in Denver, and I’m definitely going to need something stronger. Help??

Also, I was shopping at Ulta the other day. I know how you so often recommend Tarte products and love them and I’ve been wanting to try something from them. Have you seen their “Away Oui Go Portable Palette and Collector’s Set?” OMG! I usually think this kind of stuff is gimmick-y, but NO! This little gem is legit! If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re welcome! πŸ™‚ I love your make-up recommendations and feel like we fall into the same color palette, so it’s easy for me to jump on your make-up recommendations.

I had never tried cleansing cloths before reading this blog (months ago?). I’m a Mary Kay girl all the way (don’t sell – just use) but based on your recommendation back then I tried them and really like them. My husband got ahold of them and dang if he doesn’t use them every night! (He doesn’t wear makeup – LOL). I’m too oily – even at 57 – to go the cold cream route but I find Kate to be very honest and have zero issue with her being sponsored by a company. What I buy is my business but Kate’s blog has led me to many good products and steered me away from some. When I have tried a product that didn’t work for me I have returned to Ulta, CVS, Walgreen, and Walmart and never had a problem.

Carry on Kate!

I agree that the negative tone of many of these comments is uncalled for. They don’t sound like “opinions” to me, but rather jealousy. I’m sure that many of the commenters also have blogs and do not get compensated.

I say, “good for you!”…you’re getting some compensation from a brand that you already loved and used, and offering your honest opinions and contest details for your readers.

You’re doing an awesome job as always with your blog Kate – and with balancing your “full plate”. You continue to inspire me to live a fuller, more beautiful life.

I think that the review was genuine, sponsored or not. Kate has mentioned before that she uses Pond’s. I love Pond’s, they are a tried and true brand.
I don’t think the negative comments stem from jealousy. More so, I think it is residual negativity from a few months ago when she strayed and did sponsored posts for some random things like glasses when she said she never wears glasses.
That being said, it seems like the blog is back on track, I have been enjoying her posts for the most part and I am glad that I didn’t take her off my list (trust me, like a lot of her readers, it was touch and go there for a while).

Reply
Melissa says · 11.10.14

Thanks for weighing in, Meredith.

Funny that you consider Kate’s recent “stray” and “random” posts on new products to be the cause of the negativity in these posts. Pretty sure Kate has mentioned numerous times that a large part of her blog intention was to TRY new products.
Should she merely talk about products she has only used in the past? Wouldn’t she perhaps run out of things to say about the same 10 products she used when she started up the blog?

If the glasses company reached out to her, and she decided to try them, and liked them….I fail to see the problem with blogging about it?

People change and so do the products they use/try.

So ya…still sounds like jealousy and people finding excuses to criticize Kate as her blog becomes more successful.

Reply
meredith says · 11.10.14

Did you know that some people blog for fun, and do not need to be compensated? Not every one needs to make a living off of their blog. I rarely blog, but I do not allow advertising or sponsored posts. That’s just me, I can buy my own products and like to speak my mind freely.
I don’t think anyone begrudges Kate doing sponsored posts, as it helps her make money, it is just the authenticity of posts that people question.
For instance, I think the comments on this post were harsh and unnecessary, since she does indeed like Pond’s. But clearly stating that you never wear glasses, then advertising for glasses seems fake.

Not sure where jealousy comes into it, and it seems childish to automatically discount anyone with an opinion other than your own as being jealous.

Reply
Melissa says · 11.12.14

Ya – thanks. I did know that some people blog for fun.

I’m not surprised at all that you, too, have a blog. Did you know that a blog can remain “authentic” even with sponsored posts?

Kate is obviously authentic- I believe this is why her blog is so successful.

I’m sure that you would much rather pay for and try products with your own money – sounds likely. Or… perhaps what is more likely, is that companies aren’t approaching you and these smaller “just for fun” bloggers that you were referring to.

Also Kate said that she usually wears contacts. As a contact wearer myself I thought I would give you an FYI – we also wear glasses when not wearing contacts.

Annnnyways – it’s Kate’s blog. She continues to do a great job with it. She’s authentic. I think we should celebrate her success instead of nit-picking and questioning her authenticity. I’m sure Kate wouldn’t lose sleep if you stopped reading her blog- if you continue to question her authenticity.

I think I made my point, so I’m going to go spread some positivity somewhere- you should try it.

I’m done with this convo –

meredith says · 11.13.14

Yes, I wear glasses so I know how it is, and I have –guess what– Insurance!! Insurance that pays for glasses! Insurance that we pay for to offset the cost of glasses and contacts…Perhaps you have heard of it?
I was quite respectful with my comments and you were not with yours.
Insurance – look it up, of course David Kind does not accept it, but for the rest of us who wear glasses, it works out nicely.

I think people are upset because this post “sounds” fake. Even though loyal readers know that she uses the product, the tone of the post comes across a certain way… for instance, I knew right away that it was sponsored just from the first sentence. Maybe because it just jumped right into the product. It just sounds different from her usual posts, where she usually talks about life, random things, and then eventually gets to the point. So I can see why people would be upset and think that it is fake – it just doesn’t sound like her writing. I’m not offended myself, but I can see why others would be offended – it reads like a commercial, not like a regular Kate post that they’re used to. Hope that makes sense…
