Taking Stock
June Birchbox
I came across this post from Abi and thought I’d join in. (original post here.)
I turned 28 yesterday. 27 was a fantastic year. Quite simply, I’m completely content with my life right now. I love spending my days with David, I love working on this blog, I love 5:10p when Justin gets home from work. Maybe it’s a combination of Justin being finished with graduate school, and him no longer living in Pennsylvania for 6 months, but it feels like we’ve really settled down recently. Maybe David is the cause of that (probably). Either way, I’m thankful and happy.
Making : homemade hair elastics
Cooking : margarita pizza
Drinking : lemonade and iced coffee (not mixed together!)
Reading: The Fault in Our Stars is sitting on my nightstand waiting for me
Wanting: to volunteer to clean out the cat cages again at Petsmart with Alley Cats and Angels but it’s hard with David
Looking: like I need another haircut
Playing: the game “parachute” with my son
Wasting: time (always)
Sewing: ha. but she’s sewing and we’re friends so. . .
Wishing: for a better selection of outdoor movies at the art museum
Enjoying: the occasional cool breeze on a morning or evening walk
Waiting: impatiently to see my family again
Liking: peaches, although I feel like mine always go from rock hard to over-ripe before I get to eat them
Wondering: if I’ll ever be able to get on a good house cleaning schedule
Loving: how happy + cheerful David is
Hoping: that this summer won’t be too brutal
Needing: caffeine
Smelling: pinapple mango candle
Wearing: simple jewelry
Noticing: my northern accent getting softer and softer
Knowing: time is really flying with David and I’m trying to savor sweet moments
Thinking: about my goals for this next year
Feeling: nervous but excited about a hand lettering class I’m taking in a few weeks
Opening: junk mail. We get so much junk mail
Have a nice weekend!

Happy birthday!
Funny, for your birthday, I spent a chunk of time picking up your hair favorite products at Ulta & a beauty supply store. What a haul!
I love your list…it’s such a greatful place to be. Take care & thank you for all your info!
I am “wondering” the same thing about house cleaning. If you ever work it out, do share!
What a fun post! Happy Birthday Kate! I love the hairstyle in this post.

Hahaha! i love this! annnnnnd I’m cracking up at your sewing response. bahahahaha.
sewing by a-sew-ciation. Get it?!
You are the best.
“The Confident Mom” has an amazing weekly planner/cleaning schedule. I have done it now for two years and I love it! And it’s free!
I’ll check it out!
I, too am hoping for a not so brutal summer in Jersey!!
The Fault In Our Stars… *sob*
So good! 🙂
Iced coffee is a really good idea…
xx pip
Cute braids! Your hair is getting long. I am currently reading the fault in…. and I’m loving it. If only my eyes did not get so heavy so fast before bed I think I would not put it down. What is a hand lettering class?

Love this post Kate! Hope you had a fabulous birthday and celebrated all that is you 🙂
Fun to note that as a Canadian I cannot easily access a lot of the products you adore. So when my husband went to NY for a bachelor party, I insisted they find an Ulta and buy me a blow dryer and curling iron (your suggestions). Feel blessed that the boys took the hour detour to grab me some of your great suggestions as I LOVE them. In a few weeks I have a friend grabbing some Aquage uplifting foam for me on her trip!
Have a great weekend!
That’s a good man right there! 🙂
I love your hair in this post! Do you have any suggestions on how to make a braid look wider for those of us with not-as-thick hair? Thanks!
Just stretch it out a bit after you are finished with it!
Happy Belated Birthday!! I’m taking a hand lettering class too! It’s online and I haven’t started yet because I’m too nervous :O PS That’s what happens to my peaches too! So lame.
Hope your birthday was truly wonderful! What a great list, I may have to fill one out for myself – and seriously what is with the never ending junk mail!
Happy Birthday — and remember the house will always need to be cleaned. Spend your time with David! They grow up in a blink! He’s so handsome!
What a great idea-I might do the same thing, even if it’s not my birthday…(Happy Birthday, btw!)
I second your wish for a not-so-brutal summer. It’s our first summer down South and already I’m miserable! This humidity will.not.stop.
We opted out of all junk mail and added ourselves to the do not call list. Greatly reduced the junk:
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0262-stopping-unsolicited-mail-phone-calls-and-email
To compare, I opted out and my husband did not. Major difference!
Happy Birthday!
Having kids made us feel much more settled too, it’s funny how that happens 🙂
As for the junk mail, we get a ton too. My son (he’s 6) loves opening mail though, so I give it all to him. He practices his reading with it, then tosses it. Keeps him occupied for a bit while I unload the car and get his little sister in 🙂
Such a great idea!! Why did this never occur to me!? Will be doing this with the eldest little. Thanks for sharing!
A belated happy birthday to you! It appears you share your big day with actor Ed Westwick, another fave of mine. Hope you have a blessed rest of the week!
Happy Belated Birthday!! “settled” can be such an amazing feeling, can’t it? 🙂 Many blessings on your next year!! P.S. That hairstyle is adorable. I saw your post on it on instagram the either day and have since made it my life mission to be able to accomplish that on my own head. 🙂
I liked this post (I may have to do it on my blog one of these days!). It’s a fun way to get a little “peek” inside your world. Have a great weekend, Kate! 🙂
xo Always, Abby
AMEN on the house cleaning! I never realized how easy it was before baby (twins in my case). And don’t ever lose your Northern accent, it’s the best! lol
Happy belated birthday! My birthday was also yesterday (turned 28 as well) and my husband’s name is Justin. 🙂 Your hair looks adorable, as always!
Feliz cumpleaños!!!

So happy I found your blog recently! Love the post, I’ll have to give it a try! Happy Belated Birthday! 🙂
Happy Birthday! 🙂 Would you mind sharing what type of hand lettering class you’re taking? I’m local to Raleigh and make chalkboards and signs for our church/preschool – I just kind of make it up as I go along and you Pinterest for inspiration but would love to take an actual class. Is it an online class or somewhere local? Thanks! 🙂
This is such a fun idea to do on birthdays! Even doing it for a few years will make it something sweet to look back on and compare. I’m confident what I’m enjoying and wondering and wearing would change a lot over the years!
Happy birthday 🙂

You should download the app Paperkarma. It’s super easy to use and definitely cuts down on the amount of junk mail I receive. I hate junk mail since it’s so wasteful!
Hope you had a Happy Birthday yesterday – it was my birthday too …. although I didn’t turn 28 again … lol …. but I had a great day just the same! Love your blog! 🙂
Enjoy/savor all those moments with your boy. They grow sooo fast! I blinked and now my son is 10!!! . And, The fault in our Stars is an awesome book! I went through it in a day…yeah, you will actually have time to read when he is 10;)
I love the fun in this post! And the hair. And the birthday {happy birthday}.
From your whole food-y!

Happy Birthday Kate! I too am a summer baby about to turn 28 and this post feels so similar :)I was just thinking the same thing at Petsmart the other day! That I would like to volunteer to just spend time and clean cages, and just be with the kitties, instead of it as my job. I see kittens all the time as my profession in the vet field but we poke and prod them and give them vaccines, and I can’t just hang with them. Ok I sound like a crazy rambling cat lady now, but again Happy Birthday and it has been really awesome as a long time reader and a mom to see you grow from a very pretty girl to a beautiful mom! Have a great weekend.:)
I think there is a junk mail App you can get and you scan the code bar and can be removed from the list?? Or something like that…Google it!
I’m really just hoping that it stops raining long enough for me to get the washing out! Such is life ahahha
So I finally figured out why I relate to you so much… we share a birthday!! Happy Birthday yesterday! Thanks for sharing your life with all your faithful followers, you always have great advice! And a mighty handsome little man 🙂
I think all the coolest girls were born yesterday…it was my birthday, too! Happy birthday!
I am currently reading the fault in our stars as well, I hope you’re enjoying it and have a lovely weekend 🙂

Peaches are in their best season in August. A few more weeks and you’ll have perfect peaches!
Always needing caffeine, i just can’t imagine my life without it, how crazy is that?! xo

I’m trying to get to your hair tutorials, but the hair sub-menu comes up over your picture and anything I click takes me to your About page rather than the hair tutorials page. I know the website is new and you’re still working out kinks. Thanks!
About the peaches… I’ve heard that peaches from the grocery store usually do go from hard to mushy without ever really being good to eat since they are picked way to early. We have a great farmstand near us where we buy our peaches.
I have been exploring for a little for any high quality articles or blog posts on this sort of area .
Exploring in Yahoo I at last stumbled upon this site.
Studying this info So i am glad to show that I have a very good uncanny feeling I found out exactly what I needed.
I most for sure will make sure to don?t put out of your mind this web site and
provides it a look regularly.
I really like your hairstyle at the end. If you haven’t posted a tutorial of it yet, I would love it if you did.
I love this list and what you’ve shared. If you don’t mind, I’d love to use it on my blog and I’ll link to your blog. I’m a new follower of you blog; I typically follow book blogs, hence the name of mine.
I can’t believe nobody else has asked about the homemade hair elastics yet! What?! How?! More info please! As someone who is constantly losing hers, if I could make my own hair elastics and not buy them, I’d be a very happy lady.
Excellent site! When you have time grab a peek at my site too… : ) http://isee-ato.com
Hi. I thought it might help you with trouble shooting if I mention that I can see your posts just fine from my ipad, but when I check from my pc, your site is stuck on this page, no matter how I navigate here. Good luck with the problem. Love your blog.
