The Easiest Way to Keep Your Hair Healthy and Hydrated!

It’s no secret that my hair goes through a lot, from everyday things like being outside in the sun and the pool to coloring regularly and going too long between trims. My ends are the first to display any damage, as is the case with many hair types and textures, and when I start to notice excess splitting I know it’s time for a haircut and to lay off some heat styling as well.

Because I workout almost daily, and am showering and washing my hair at least 5 times a week, I need to pay close attention to how dry my hair feels. It’s key for me to use a leave-in product like Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat & UV Protective Primer, and also make sure I don’t miss my weekly hair mask treatment.

Do you use a hair mask regularly? I took a poll on instagram recently and it showed that the majority does *not* use a hair mask regularly! I love how my hair feels after I use one and it’s been a weekly routine for me for years. The Amika Soulfood Nourishing Hair Mask was one of the very first hair masks I shared online when I started my blog. It’s really ideal for dry hair because it has such great ingredients like Jojoba Seed Oil to support strength, and Panthenol to help prevent split ends and breakage. It leaves my hair feeling moisturized, nourished, and strong, without any waxy weight that some other products may leave behind.

When you are using a hair mask, make sure you check the back of the container to see how long it’s suggested to leave on your hair. The Amika Soulfood Nourishing Mask needs about 2-5 minutes to make sure it does its job, so I like to shampoo, rinse, and then apply the hair mask. That means the rest of the time in the shower spent washing my body, shaving my legs, exfoliating my face, etc. can all happen while the hair mask sits and conditions my hair. When I’m applying the mask, I like to divide my hair in half, clipping up the top half with a jaw clip. I apply the mask to the underneath section of my hair, then let down the top from the clip and apply more product to the top layers. The front and top of my hair is usually what gets the most damage, so making sure I’m really covering those sections of my hair with the hair mask is essential.

So while that has been a weekly hair treatment of choice lately, I also love the ease and performance of using a lightweight primer on my hair like the Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat & UV Protective Primer. When I spray it in, I make sure to lift the middle and top sections of my hair, then slowly drop the hair out while I’m spraying in an effort to coat all the strands with the protective primer.

This primer protects from heat and UV rays, and also provides moisture. Moisture not only helps the hair look better, but it also provides elasticity to the hair to prevent breakage! The Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat & UV Protective Primer has so many oils, including Macadamia Seed Oil, to soften the hair, even at the driest sections. It’s a thin, creamy consistency that sprays in a light mist so it won’t weigh your hair down!

Hydrated, strong, healthy hairstyles more easily and looks so much better than dry, lifeless hair. So between a weekly hair mask and a daily protective primer, you should be on track to keeping your hair in really great shape!

You can shop for both of these products, and so much more, at Sephora.

Thanks for this post! I have fine straight hair- would the primer and mask weigh it down? Also, love the nail polish color! Would you share please?
I just watched your Dyson tutorial- very helpful.
Thank you!

Neither of these weigh my hair down and I *hate* the feeling of waxy, heaviness on my hair. Try the Bumble & Bumble primer first!

I second the nail polish color!

I have baby fine hair as use the B&b primer almost daily – definitely doesn’t weigh it down!

Kate, I’ll have to give these a try. Is it safe to use a clarifying shampoo on color-treated hair? If so, how often? Any brand recommendations?

Usually a clarifying shampoo will indicate on the bottle if it’s safe for color treated hair. I know Virtue has a purifying shampoo that is safe for color-treated hair!

I have found that the bumble and bumble primer really weighs down my hair (I have very fine hair). Have you found this to be true? Am I maybe using too much?

I have not found this to be the case, but I would definitely try using less!

Hey Kate!!
I saw your post from last year regarding the beat serum you use and per Sephoras website it’s for blonde hair. What heat protector do you remember for those of us that aren’t blonde? Thanks!!!

I get breakage all the time on the sides of my hair around my face. Seems like it gets to about the same spot and then breaks off again. Any tips on how to help prevent this?

I have the same problem! It’s very hard for me to grow my hair longer than shoulder length because the hair on the sides breaks off 😩

This is an only slightly related question – what do you use for your kids hair? (sorry if I missed a post about this).

Thanks!!!

Hi Kate, silver haired senior here, my hair is fine, wavy and extremely dry since I stopped coloring my hair. I use the Amika mask once a week but I leave it on for an hour under a plastic cap & hat. It does have a bit of frizz/crinkly look to it the first day but overall has much better shine and texture. Am I leaving the mask on too long? I only shampoo 2x week, other days just rinse and conditioner. I can only use the “purple” shampoo Once a month bc my hair picks up too much tint. Photos up on my website if you’re interested in doing a post on going dye-free

Thanks for the tips! Would you use the B&B primer in place of, or in addition to a leave-in conditioner? For context, I use Healthy Sexy Hair’s Leave-In Conditioner.

Kate says · 10.28.20

Hmmm, I would probably use it in place of!
