How to Start a Skincare Routine!

It shouldn’t surprise anyone when I say that I love beauty products. It was the love of testing and trying out new products, from skincare to hair products, that made me want to start my blog!

For someone like me, fine-tuning a skincare routine is a challenge I enjoy, but I imagine there are a lot of you that either want to just be told exactly what you should use or find the multitude of skincare products that are available sort of crippling.

Sephora has recently launched a really quick and simple quiz called the “Skincare Routine Builder” and it takes the tedious process of trying to guess what skincare products would be good for you out of the equation! All you do is provide answers to a few questions and you’ll be presented with a few products from different categories to explore based on your skin type!

Even though I like the trial process of exploring skincare, I took the quiz just to see if I was on the right track with what Sephora would recommend for me. As it turns out, I own and use a lot of the products that were recommended, so I feel like I got a B+ on that quiz.

Quiz aside, if you are ready to create a simple skincare routine, whether it’s for the first time in your life, or if you are just trying to reset your routine with new products, a great starting point is to use a cleanser, moisturizer and eye cream. There are plenty of other products to build into your routine beyond those three, but those should be major players in your routine.

The Youth To The People Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser is full of really great ingredients that leave my skin feeling clean without being stripped of all its moisture. You know that squeaky clean feeling you can sometimes get on your skin? That may be an indicator that you’ve removed too much moisture. It’s vital that my skin doesn’t feel like it’s going to crack when I smile, which it doesn’t after using this cleanser.

I’ve used cleansers with Green Tea in the past and that ingredient agrees with my skin. It also helps fight visible signs of aging on the skin.

I’ve been a Biossance fan for years, and the Squalane + Marine Algae Eye Cream is a great choice for a daily cream to help fight aging skin and restore moisture. Biossance includes Squalane in a lot of their products as it’s a great ingredient to help lock in moisture. The Marine Algae Complex in this eye cream helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in as few as seven days!

It’s a clean product full of effective ingredients designed to care for and nourish the really delicate skin around your eyes. It’s best to use your ring finger when applying, as that is your “weakest” finger so you won’t be prone to pulling too hard on the skin. When applying, encircle your eye, from your eyebrow to the highest part of your cheekbone to make sure that your eye cream is hitting all of the skin around your eye area.

For moisture, I used the Tatcha The Water Cream and I’m so impressed with the technology in this moisturizer. It’s a thick, creamy product but when you apply it to the skin and start blending, you’ll feel it transform under your fingertips to a more slick, watery formula. It has a unique water-burst component and between it sinking deeply into your skin and leaving you feeling hydrated, the other ingredients like green tea, rice, and algae all help restore natural radiance to the skin.

In the photo below I do not have a stitch of makeup on my face, as evidenced by the sides of my nose, and my face is still glowing. That is all the Tatcha The Water Cream.

As I mentioned at the start of this post, a cleanser, moisturizer, and eye cream are great starting products for a basic skincare routine. I’d also encourage you to take the Skincare Routine Builder quiz to see what products are recommended for you!

You can find these products and more at Sephora. This post was sponsored by Sephora.

What do you recommend for a good cleanser for every day? I’ve been using the Ponds cold cream cleanser since you mentioned it ages ago because I like the idea of cleaning and moisturizing in one step, but I also feel like it’s allllllll in my pores and I need a good deep cleanse.

My CC cream already has SPF 50 in it. Is it necessary to add an additional sunscreen?

Great post! I’m an esthetician, and I always emphasize the importance of a skincare routine to my clients. The rule of thumb is that 20% of the results you achieve come from appointments, on the spot treatments, etc. The other 80% of wonderful skin benefits come from sticking to that home routine!
