How to Prep Your Guest Room for Guests

10 Great Questions to Ask on a Road Trip

You certainly don’t need to have a guest room in order to do these things, so keep in mind that you can do them in any space where guests may be staying!

Justin and I are very used to traveling for holidays, or simply random visits throughout the years, to our extended families’ homes since no one lives in our city (or state!). We’ve also hosted our family many times as well, so I’d say we both probably have a few things that we notice about staying in someone’s home, or hosting at ours, that provide comfort and ease.

I find a lot of joy in hosting. It’s truly a pleasure of mine so I thought I’d share a few things I try to do before guests come to stay at my house.

One. Put clean sheets on the bed, lay towels and washcloths out (either in the bathroom or on the bed), and make sure an extra blanket or two is visible as well.

Two. Stock the bathroom with essentials like q-tips and toothpaste, and perhaps a few extra things that may have been forgotten during packing (pain reliever, a cell phone charger, or slippers).

Three. Make sure to have snacks or light bites available and visible for guests. Everyone has their own personal preference for snacking or when they eat meals, so providing a few small food options will keep hungry guests happy!

Four. Set up some lamps on timers. This is such an easy way to provide warmth and (duh) light to your home and keeps people from stubbing their toe on furniture they can’t see.

I shared a post recently that contained a few breakfast dish ideas, you can click here to read it!

Thanks for the tips! I love hosting people, too. I’ve always said there’s 4 BASIC things a guest room should have (or at least that I’ve appreciated and noted if it’s missing in a home we stay in) as well. These seem obvious, but if you don’t have a designated guest room (i.e. a kids room that guest use) they might not actually be there: a mirror, tissues, trashcan, and clock. I hate when I stay somewhere and there’s no tissues or I can’t see what I look like before leaving the room. lol

A great tip I read on Cup of Jo was to sleep in your guest room for a night! That way you can see if there are any quirks to know about- our last guest room was on the other side of the house and apparently a street light flashed on and off all night. A few things I’d like to add to our guest room: a sound machine, a fan, and a water carafe.

Wonderful ideas, I can tell you are a joyful, generous hostess- I love hosting and making people feel welcomed. I would also add a sign with the WiFi password and a mini refrigerator with beverages!

Great ideas. One thing I always leave in the bath is a glass for water to teeth brushing. I even travel with a travel cup because no one ever thinks of this. What are your thoughts on that? Am I a weirdo?

Also, I keep a bedside lamp on prior to bedtime so my guests can find their way to bed. My apt has a ceiling light on the switch.

Lastly, I think a fan is a good idea. Just in case. It hopes some people sleep better.

Love you blog.
