Do You Like Your Hair?

next
An Inviting Oasis

I’m genuinely curious.

Do you like your hair? If given the chance to choose a whole new head of hair, color and texture and length, would you choose what you already have?

Most days I’m pretty happy with my hair. If I could choose new hair, though, I’d probably choose for it to be about 25% thicker and be about 6-7 inches longer. I’ve always loved long hair like this.

I’d stay blonde though, for sure.

Changing my hair, or doing that for my clients when I worked behind the chair, is such a fun process for me. I loved the thrill of trying something new on my sister when she would let me test out my balayage techniques when I was learning. I also liked trying new things on my hair, from cuts to colors.

Hair can be such a deeply personal and intimate thing for some women. And it can be the complete opposite for others. Our experience in life, and how those around us treated their own hair, has a big impact on the role we let it play in our physical appearance.

As someone who feels very comfortable with and enjoys styling my own hair, I hope you feel that same thing about yours. And if you don’t, I hope you can find some help right here on this website to show you how to love your hair.

I used to hate my hair but I’ve grown to love it! It’s your typical Asian hair – straight and brown – so it’s easy to style. Just wish it wasn’t so damn frizzy in the summer haha! 🙂

I have fine thin hair,. For years, my sister who is a stylist had been trying to get me to try out extensions. The stylist I see today, we have also discussed it on and off for several years. I finally took the plunge and I am in love. It added only about 3”
Of length and just the right amount of fullness.

I am starting to try to like my hair more. I have unruly, poofy when brushed hair. Could you recommend some products for hair with some natural wave to it? I’d love to love my hair but I think I need some help in order to get there.

Reply
Cassie says · 10.04.19

I have curly hair, so I really only know how to handle curls, but I feel like wavy hair is just ‘less curly’ hair, if that makes sense? So from a curly girl to a wavy girl…maybe try not brushing you hair dry to reduce the poof-ing. Just use a wide tooth comb when its wet at most. I really have never owned a brush…if just doesn’t work for all hair types. Also, the more texture hair has, the more moisture it needs (generally) so maybe try a leave in conditioner designed for wavy hair or a smoothing or no-frizz formulation. And if you want to highlight the wave, drying with a diffuser is always good. Good luck!

Ok my name is Cassie and I have curly hair too : ) I hated my hair growing up – I am 50 and we did not have anything but mousse and hairspray back then and oh Lord !! But now I love it and get compliments all the time.
Agree with no brush! I wash/condition then straighten my hair once a week only and in-between use dry hairspray and coconut oil for control
Have also found oloplex bond smoother and oil works great on frizz

Mostly! I like my color, I just wish I knew how to style it better. I have a ton of hair and since I don’t color it, its very healthy/slick. Braids looks like chunky blocks and it will never hold a curl. Not that I’ve figured out how to use either the curling iron or the curling wand I own, despite watching all your videos, lol!! 🙂

I absolutely hate my hair. 😢 It’s “stringy” even after drying right out of the shower (I don’t use any products as they seem to make this worse,) and doesn’t hold any sort of style for any length of time, so I wear a ponytail every day. I recently purchased custom shampoo/conditioner from Prose and do feel it has helped a little bit? Maybe? Otherwise, no, I don’t like my hair! 😂

I have naturally thick curly hair. I wish it was a little easier to style (takes over an hour to blow dry and straighten or curl), but otherwise I love my hair!

I’m a 45 YO true blonde. I love that I have very few gray hairs, and if I do, you can’t see them. BUT, the skin to hair contrast isn’t there so I find if I don’t have a tan, I prefer to go brown. Additionally, my hair is so fine, I can’t do a lot of styles and updos. Plus, the tangles are out of control. True blondes really don’t love being blonde. Lol

I have days that I completely hate it , and some I just love it, when I was young I just didn’t notice but as I got older the changes in the texture after I had my daughter did kick in and also adding the grays that have set in I used to have very fine shinny hair, now is becoming frizzy, wavy and still thin. But you know it’s part of being your self and growing old. I personally don’t color my hair but do go for trims. I do wish I had tried having my hair short as a pixie cut when I was younger but now I will just let it grow until I change my mind and cut it again to the shoulders or jaw length. By the way your hair looks amazing love your tutorials on styling your hair. I personally didn’t have the puck to have a relative to style my hair, I grew up an only child.

I want your hair. Lol. I’ve been trying to embrace my curls for the last 7 months. I think the last time I really liked my hair was the 80’s. My hair is great with short layers on top and that has been out of style for so many years. It does big hair well.

I don’t hate my hair but I don’t love it. I wish it was a bit longer, but really I wish I knew how to care best for my hair. Are there places I can go to for an afternoon and have them show me what products would work best and how to use them? How to properly curl my hair, straighten it? I grew up with 5 brothers, and a mom whose mom did the whole bowl cut hair style on her. (Not a lot of help.) I do my best but a one on one 2-3 hour class on my hair I would probably jump at the chance.

Um, I hate it. Lol. I have a lot of flat, limp hair that doesn’t do anything and won’t hold curl at all. I had it long forever, but just put it in a ponytail. I cut it all off into a pixie and that was nice maintenance wise but it didn’t fit my face at all. Growing it out again now, but just so I can put it in a ponytail. I have tried and tried to learn how to do something with it. Bought a curling iron, so much product, watched so many videos. I just can’t get anything to work!
So no, I do not like my hair 🙂

Kate my length and texture seems very similar to yours, and agree 25% thicker would be amazing ; ) I’m generally happy with it when I style it, but I have to “do” it every day. Would love to have a texture/cut that lends itself to air drying, or not needing a full blow dry and curling iron attack every day.

For the most part, I love my hair. Very thick, although the tops seems to be thinning over recent years (I’m Only 38). However, when it comes to styling it up, it’s almost like I never hav ever enough. Messy Buns? Never work. Volume? Not so much. But I love being a brunette, and I do feel like my hair is my #1 physical attribute! ❤️

I love the color of my strawberry-blonde hair and that it grows fast! But it’s sooo fine. I wish it were thicker so I could keep volume in it easier. It’s 100% flat by the end of the day no matter what I do to it. I was reading your shampoo vs. conditioner post yesterday, and from that I think I need to use a volumizing shampoo. I’m just worried it will make my hair too greasy. I have to wash it every day with a realy clarifying shampoo because of all the buildup. So I may need to do volumizing shampoo, a gentle conditioner and one of your weekly cleansing products that you’ve reviewed. Hopefully I can figure something out to get life back in my hair without having to cut it short! I love long hair too. Thanks for all the knowledge you share!

I love everything about my hair, except my natural color. It’s a weird brown. I used to highlight it blonde for years and loved it, but it grows so fast that became to expensive. So now I balayage it blonde because its more affordable since I don’t have to go as often. It just isn’t the same. I like the color, but I don’t love it.

I don’t like my hair. I really struggle with color, style, shape, volume, the whole 9 yards. I’ve quit coloring it because of the expense and upkeep. I do have a nice little white section in my bangs I love. If I could have hair like yours I would be over the moon! I dread going to the salon. I went to a stylist for years who did great color but I could never get her to cut it the way I wanted it. I stayed with her so long because she was reasonably priced. I had to make a change for the cut though. Now I’m paying what I feel is an outrageous amount just for a cut that I’m not in love with. I’m in my late 50’s now. It’s just not the same as it was 10-20 years ago. I dread doing it every day.

I didn’t always love my hair, but I do now. It’s fine but thick and pretty straight. It used to be straighter but being pregnant with my son made it a little wavy (being pregnant with either of my daughters didn’t change my hair). It’s a light brown color, and I used to get lots of blonde highlights (which I stopped when I was trying to get pregnant). Then all three of my kids were born with my exact same hair – color and texture and everything! And I loved it on them and realized I loved it on myself too. Now that I’m in my 40s, I really appreciate it. My dad has the same hair too, and at almost 75 has hardly any gray hair and it hides the gray he does have well. My fingers are crossed that I’ll go gray just the same way he has – so far so good.

First of all……I love YOUR hair. The main reason I found you years ago was because of your Pinterest posts revolving around your hair tutorials. Fast forward a few years, still love your hair.
As for my hair, it is a love – hate relationship. Somedays are good, most days are just okay. Fine thin limp hair that I get colored to keep me blonde (I am 53 by the way). Currently getting ready to go to a new stylist next week, hoping for good results !! I try to put in the effort daily to make my hair look nice and am willing to put time and effort into it…..but honestly most days I just feel sort of blah about it.

I have fine curly hair. I wish I just had more of the same hair, fuller head of hair. It’s perfect because it’s curly but very easy to blow out and holds everything well. I’ve had it long and short, looks great at all lengths. Color is so easy to play around with but I have never taken the plunge with going really blonde or really red and that may be the next frontier for me.

I love when you post about hair! That’s how I found you, years ago. 🙂 I had your inverted bob cut and loved it for a short time. I now have a blunt bob to my shoulders/or shorter, depending on mood. I’d like to grow it out again but I have really thick hair. If I could choose my hair, I would choose 25-50% thinner. I keep my dark blonde fairly light – similar to yours. I follow lots of your styling videos, so keep ’em comin’! I love volume and waves – yeah Kenra volume 25!

My hair is truly the biggest waste of my time. Letting it air dry isn’t an option as it looks like a grown out perm. I’ve never been proficient with a blow dryer and round brush, so I use a large barrel curling iron to manage the very uneven frizz and add some curl. I don’t wear it down as it frizzes and any curl falls out over the course of the day, so into an endless ponytail it goes. Doesn’t matter whether I use salon or drugstore shampoo and conditioner; additional product just makes it feel like there is additional product in my hair. Add to that increasing grey which does NOT look stylish, just old, and I’m spending more and more to delay the inevitable. My dream is to be rich enough to have a hairdresser come and style my hair whenever I want, or to have the machine described in the Hunger Games book that dried and styled Katniss Everdeen’s hair for her 🙁

Kate, I love your hair! I have hair envy 🙂 For several years, the hair around the front of my face/side doesn’t grow as quick or long as my back. I can barely get it past the bottom of my ears. My hairdresser has been great working with me but without luck. I regularly use heat protectors, wash every other day, take hair vitamins, etc. No known health issues that could be a cause and assume aging and hormones may be to blame. Would appreciate any suggestions or advice!

I found the color that I love that suits me and my personality, but I wish the texture and length of my hair were different. My hair, when left to dry naturally is slightly wavy in the front and then gets curlier in the back. There is no consistent texture throughout. It gets a bit frizzy if I don’t put anything in it and let it air dry, but i’m pretty low maintenance. I wouldn’t mind it being longer either but I can’t let it go past a certain point or else it gets stringy and not healthy looking.

I love my hair. It’s curly and layered, longest layer at about chin length. I’m not a fan of my current cut and sometimes wish that the reddish tint it used have was still there, but otherwise I definitely love it.

I guess I’m in the minority of people who actually don’t mind their own, natural hair. Like my mom, I was blessed with thicker, dark brown hair. Mine actually has natural wave to it (so long as it’s not been blown-dry) so I tend to let it air-dry most of the time and just play up the waves. I find it’s best if I shower at night, air-dry hair overnight, then tousle my waves in the morning with a spritz of hair spray. If I blow-dry, my hair is completely straight and stays that way unless it gets wet again (rain or even high humidity). Given the thickness of my hair, I’ve actually trained it to go about a week without a wash. I just rinse and condition it in the shower most nights, then wash and condition about once a week. It seems to be agreeing with my hair because it’s feeling and looking quite healthy lately! As with anything, I think learning how to care for your own hair is such a personal thing – it takes time and a ton of trial and error. There’s no one miracle product that fits all.

I really only love that I have thick hair. My hairstylist says I have 2 very different heads of hair on my head. The top and front are a little coarse and straight but then you lift up the top and it’s very coarse and curly. Not pretty curly, very frizzy curly. So to do anything with it requires a lot of time. I usually have to flat iron the underneath portion to smooth it and then I can curl it all. If it was an option to have a short style I would but I’ve tried a few different cuts and it’s just a frizzy puffy mess when it’s short. If you ever need a model with stupid hair- I’m your girl 😂

I love my hair most days; it is thick, full of body, and past shoulder length (blonde). I enjoy trying new styles and style both up and down. I receive frequent compliments from friends and strangers alike. That said, I am not wash and go. Air-drying is NOT an option #frizzymess. I labor over my hair to smooth and style (straight or curly), and struggle to find hairspray that will resist the humidity of NC. I wash my hair twice a week (even in the heat of summer) as styles come easier with grit and product build-up. First day hair is the worst. I spend so much time on a blowout then add texture spray/dry shampoo to combat the softness of clean hair. I would only change the frizz. Love it otherwise.

Reply
Brooke says · 10.04.19

I love the color and hate the texture…thin, dry, random curls and waves that can’t be worn natural because they’re so random and frizzy. Products do not help frizz…I’m still trying new ones with my fingers crossed, and still disappointed every time lol. I hate using heat tools on it because it’s time consuming and damaging to my already thin and fragile hair, but I feel like a swamp monster without them so there’s that. If I could pick any hair, I’d copy and paste Kate Middleton’s blowout onto my head and be one happy girl lol.

I lost all my hair 18 years ago to an autoimmune disease called Alopecia. It was one of the most devastating things I’ve ever had to deal and live with. When I was younger everyone had stick straight glossy hair parted down the middle. My hair doesn’t do that. It’s thick, very curly and now at the age of 60, it’s gray. I love it! Aveda Be Curly is a must as well as Amika anti humidity spray before styling. Basically scrunch , dry with a diffuser and smooth out a few frizzy pieces. 10 minutes max. And I’m done.

I haven’t always loved my hair but since I started following some of your hair tutorials, I am frequently told by friends and strangers (once a nurse during an awkward procedure–haha) that they love my hair, how do I get it to do that, etc. They are amazed that it’s pretty much just a curling iron and some teasing 🙂 I always refer them to your site if they want to know more. UGH- I have very thick, coarse hair that is partly wavy, partly curly and partly straight. (yep all three) I can NOT wash & go, my hair needs wash, condition, treat, blow dry, straighten. Then if I want curls, curling iron for some bend or wave vs crazy mess. IF I spend an hour on it, I can make it look good, but it is SO much work. If I have plans, I know I have to wash and blow dry the day before for best looking hair for the day of plans. SO MUCH WORK. I would love a less-coarse texture, and/or just 1 pattern (straight vs curl vs waves).

Reply
Jordan B says · 10.06.19

I’m the same – definitely no “wash and go”. I ALWAYS have to style my hair. It’s naturally curly/wavy and I don’t typically wear it this way, so I almost always curl or straighten, which means it’s has to be dry. I try to let it air dry when I can since I use heat styling tools so often, so I am a night shower person. Then of course you have to sleep certain ways with your way hair so you don’t have weird bumps to correct the next day… complicated!

Ha, I absolutely hate my hair. At my age, I’ve learned to live with it and make the best of it, but it’s been a process. It is very fine, thin, a few choice cowlicks here and there, and the dreaded back part (which is how I found your site actually, thanks for that tutorial). It doesn’t hold style, most products are too much for it, and when it’s up my scalp will show through in places. Sigh. I do love the color and wouldn’t change that and I am always super happy when I have a good hair day.

What an interesting question – I haven’t thought about it for a long time. For the most part, I do like my hair, but for a long time I didn’t. My texture is curly, which has made a lot of hair styles & trends out of reach (without more processes, etc), so it would be nice to have straight hair to experience those styles, but for the most part, I’m happy with what I have.

I do like my hair after years of fighting it. I have really thick, deep auburn hair that is naturally curly and wavy. When it is humid, I can look like Orphan Annie on a bender. I am 50 and finally started coloring it after the red faded into more of a brown. Love the color but do find it a challenge to explain to my stylist how thick curly hair responds to different cuts and ways of styling. I have many friends who are my age and starting to deal with the thinning of their hair, so I am grateful and just deal with the mop that I have.

I love your site with ideas for hair, but the curling ideas just don’t work for my hair type. I also don’t want to spend much $$ on tools or styling products that may not help my hair. I would rather it just be a rich brown or brighter blonde. I would rather it not be so fine and limp. I love your hair. I am ok with the fact that I don’t love my hair. I used to be very self-conscious about it in high school and college. Now, I do my best to look grown-up and just try and remember that a smile is the best way to look put together.

Always loved my hair, thick, long, could easily style it. Right now I hate it. Recently lost a significant amount. At first we thought it was menopause, but nothing helped. Recently went to dermatologist, they biopsied. They are unsure but think it’s a condition where my body is attacking the hair follicles. I have a medication that is holding of the hair loss at the moment but I am left with fine, thin, wiry hair. Had bangs my whole life, can’t do that now there isn’t enough hair. I am having a hard time figuring out how to style it and what products will now work on this totally different hair. So frustrated.

I’d take a whole new head. Different color, longer by a lot and thick I’d love thicker hair. It used to be thick but is thin now and I don’t like it.

A few years ago, I’d have said I LOVED my hair. I like the color — I don’t dye it but constantly get complimented on my highlights and hair color. It’s super fine, and while that’s annoying on freshly cleaned hair, I always hear people say they want fine hair. And it’s soft and shiny.

However, I’ve been dealing with autoimmune disease issues that have caused my hair to fall out at an alarming rate. So for the past few years, I’ve been a little down on my hair. It’s thinner than usual, lacking lustre, and I’m just self conscious about it now.

Otherwise, I actually enjoy my hair.

An interesting question I had to think about for a minute… I would say generally yes, I like my hair. If I could change it I might make it less curly, definitely less impacted by humidity, a little thicker and to grow faster. I like long hair sometimes, and like short hair too. It takes me years to get my hair “long” and by then it is typically damaged and I’m tired of it.

It would be so cool if you did online consultations. Something as simple as a quick video chat with someone regarding their hair questions or tips and suggestions. You always give great advice and I think most people would trust your opinion.

Would love to know what styling tool (iron) you use on your hair. My hair is very similar to yours! Thank you!

She uses a 1.25” Babyliss curling iron.

Love my hair due to it’s texture/thickness/ability to hold a curl…. hate the fact that I’m at least 1/2 gray and naturally a very dark brunette. Add fast growing hair (a blessing? a curse?) to the story and it’s can feel like a small fortune for 4-5 week root touch ups. But not ready to go gray yet : )

I’m 52 and stopped coloring my hair about 3 years ago. I love the silver and white that I have now. My hair has always been thick, however the texture has changed and I’m struggling with it. I keep going back and forth on the length. We live in south Texas and the humidity is always super high.

I would say I love it! It’s very versatile – can go curly or straight, and is thick enough to do any kind of styling I want. But it tends to be pretty dry, and I would prefer it was a little less thick – it gets pretty gross around the ends, and it makes growing it out hard.

Hi Kate,
I love your bed that you have and your blue rug in your recent post, can you share where they are from.

PS…I’ve never asked this silly stuff before, but I love your site.

Have a good day!

I used to LOVE my hair, but after my 2nd pregnancy and the death of my husband its like my body decided to just abandon about half of my original volume. My hair is fine and straight and I love what I have, but it’s a little heartbreaking to have lost its formal glory.

Honestly, no. I have curly hair that is a mix of 3A and 3B, but my roots are straight for about the first inch. My hair is also very fine and I have lost a lot of fullness as I’ve gotten older. I mean, I can deal with it but it’s so much work that it’s just frustrating. Add a new baby and I end up with the mom bun most days because I really don’t have the time to do anything with it anymore.

I have always liked my hair (save 2 bad cuts in all my 42 years…) – it’s been REALLY long and it’s been REALLY short. I lost all of it during chemo last summer and it’s grown back – this was my second round of Lymphoma but the first time I was bald. I even enjoyed being bald. There was a period around 5 months post treatment when it was growing back that I HATED it. It was weird and duckling looking and out of whack. My stylist trimmed it into an amazing mostly grey mohawk and that got me through. I had another period around 7 months where I had a femme-mullet but again, a good whack off the back and I was good again.

I had enough hair for two humans before it fell out but it grew back pretty curly, VERY textured – it is jaw length and I can literally make it stand straight up with a little coaxing and no product – and also probably 50% thicker. It’s crazy thick. I love it – but it’s HOT in the Georgia heat. But the answer is YES, I love my hair. It’s one of my favorite features. I can’t wait for more length, though, so I can go back to my Small Things Blog hair-dos.

I have a love/hate relationship. I have thick, coarse naturally red hair thats wavy on the top layers and straight on underneath layer. It’s fairly acceptable to let it air with a cocktail of about 4 different products, but I usually have to go back over it with a flat iron to smooth it and get out the cowlick in my bangs area and then curling iron to accentuate the waves. I would give anything to change my texture to more fine hair than so coarse! I also get blonde highlights every 8 weeks or so to give the red more dimension. My niece has beautiful strawberry red/blonde hair and her texture is definitely fine, and it’s naturally wavy; beautiful mermaid waves. I am SOOO thankful for her sake that she has fine-textured hair and didn’t inherit my hair!! 😳

I’m the same! I’d stay blonde for sure, but I’d love longer hair and hair that has actual waves or curls instead of this weird flippy thing that my hair does.

Most days I don’t think much about my hair because if I did, I’d be depressed. My hair has been thinning for years and I’m usually self-conscious about it, wondering if people can see right through to my scalp, if I have a bare spot etc. I feel powerless and the thought of wearing hairpieces or wigs fills me with dread. I hate windy days outside and having to apply sunscreen on my scalp. Sorry about the complaints but you asked lol!
I’d love to have normal to thick hair that I could just pull back in a ponytail, any texture/color would please me to no end.

My hair is VERY thick and wavy underneath but the top is straight and frizzy. I love my hair and would like to go natural, but don’t know how. I was born a redhead which developed into light blonde. It then grew darker as I aged. Now, at 47 I have almost every color except black in my head. I do keep it highlighted though. Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you, Donniel

I’m 63 and love your channel and blogs! My hair is naturally curly, the just right kind and I love it. I also love to try new hairstyle and color. I would love for my stylist to say,” Susan, I think this style would look great on you and while we’re at it let’s find a new color too! I have watched you since before you were married and had kids. So I’ve been with you for a while now and I think you’re THE BEST !
