Favorite Lip Colors from 2018

Favorite Face Makeup of 2018

one. two. three. four. five. six. seven.

Lipstick has always been one of my favorite cosmetics to play around with and this year I found my favorites to be a few different pinks!

If you missed it, I shared some other favorites from 2018 in this post!

Nars Velvet Matte Lip pencil – This is a long wear lip color that feels great on the lips. It’s not drying but it’s even better when you put a bit of gloss on top of it!

Nudestix Gel Lip color – I loved this bright pink all summer long.

Nars Afterglow lip balm – This is a really easy to wear pink that is a wash of color without being too strong and hydrates the lips so well

fresh Sugar Lip Treatments – I love all the colors from this line but Petal and Bloom were absolute favorites this year!

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution – Unfortunately my shade here was limited edition and out of stock but if you are on the fence I’m telling you this lipstick wears beautifully!

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk liner – I like using this liner all over my lips. I feel that it wears lighter than the lipstick and I like the color. This is a cult favorite and I can attest that it’s a beautiful easy pink!

p.s. Some of my other favorite pinks!

I love these shades, especially the Charlotte Tilbury ones! I could see them being nice gifts for friends as well. šŸ™‚

Any drugstore favorites? I feel like I’ve seen several mentioned this year, unless they were only for faves for a #sponsored #ad

I’ve been following your blog for years but it’s getting really difficult to determine what are genuine recommendations and what’s just an ad. I used to trust your recommendations and get really excited for your monthly favorites, but lately it all just seems to be ads šŸ™

Kate says · 12.28.18

Iā€™ve been liking the neutrogena glosses butt here isnā€™t much color payoff!
Ads are always crystal clear with disclosure. Thanks!

Reply
Leah says · 12.28.18

I think you’re missing the point, Kate. Yes, your ads are crystal clear. What is also crystal clear is that you randomly will sponsor a brand. For example, you had not mentioned Neutrogena since 2015. Those type of behaviors are perceived as disengenius and like you’re just out for the money rather than sharing honest opinions. So freely sharing you are the primary income provider along with your new non-primary home purchase, new minivan purchase, countless trips through the year and hiring two employees reinforces that perception.

I agree the comments have been mean spirited and have crossed a line. Please shake that off. Nobody deserves being shamed for their body.

Reply
Angela says · 12.28.18

So basically what youā€™re saying Kate is that anything labeled ā€œadā€ is crystal-clear-guaranteed not to be genuine. Got it. Thanks for the confirmation!

Reply
Kate says · 12.28.18

No, you are putting words in my mouth. The commenter said she couldnā€™t determine wat was an ad or not so I explained an answer to her.

Reply
Allison Spinner says · 12.28.18

No, they were correct. I can’t tell if your ads are genuine recommendations anymore or just sponsored posts.

Any favorite colors from Bite? My teenage daughter got a set in her stocking & loves the feel of their lipstick but would like different colors. You have close to the same coloring

Yes! Peche! Itā€™s a fun watermelon pink/red!

Sally Mae says · 12.28.18

So much regurgitated content. When you post content that is clearly nothing but an opportunity for you to get commission it seems disingenuous. Iā€™m disappointed in what your platform has become….itā€™s more like a shopping catalog than providing real recommendations of products your trust and think others should try.

Reply
Kate says · 12.28.18

Round up posts are something Iā€™ve been doing for years! Thanks

Reply
Michele says · 12.28.18

I appreciate your roundups, I just wish they included budget friendly options. As someone who routinely ā€œeats lipstick offā€ (weird habit, I know, but for some reason I bite my lips profusely when wearing lipstick) I canā€™t get behind a CT price tag…it would be a real expensive ā€œsnackā€šŸ˜‚

Could 2019 bring some drugstore finds? Iā€™m sure many of your readers would appreciate more realistically priced product options. I know youā€™ve done some, but an increased focus might be more relatable than the more expensive choices you most frequently feature.

Reply
Angela says · 12.28.18

ā€œShopping catalogā€ is a perfect description for her blog now. Nothing more. And obviously sheā€™s okay with that, but to her devoted readers, itā€™s a slap in the face.

Reply
Leah says · 12.28.18

Shopping catalog is a great descriptor!

Pillow Talk is the best! I have the liner and use it daily, it goes with everything! I also got a sample of the lipstick, and itā€™s such a pretty pink shade.
Happy Friday!

Why do you close comments when people question your business practices? Youā€™re happy to blast poor customer service or issues with local businesses on your social media. Iā€™m sincerely interested in why you think youā€™re immune to criticism.

Reply
Kate says · 12.28.18

I close comments when the thread becomes an ongoing pile of hateful lies. Always happy to accept constructive feedback but when itā€™s sandwiched between hate, lies, and other disrespect I donā€™t tolerate it. If youā€™d like to leave feedback in a respectful, mature way Iā€™m open! Otherwise, I wonā€™t accept it on my site. Iā€™m sure you can understand that. Thanks!

Bridget says · 12.28.18

I mean this with respect, but I think some of the anger in the rude comments stems from your lies, Kate.
When the boys were little you did a sponsored Pampers post, but posted a story the next week with Luvs in your basket. You posted about air filters, but then showed your office with an air filter that has clearly never been changed. You opened someoneā€™s mail (a felony) and stole their ice cream. And then the stolen earring design…
Those are just a few off the top of my head.
I think that in todayā€™s world, influencers are trained to accept all good praise and consider all negative commentary as hate. Usually, itā€™s not hate. Itā€™s just a valid opinion and you take offense to it.
Do I agree with people making fun of you for being overweight? No. That is hateful. But the rest of the comments? They seem spot on.

Reply
Shelly says · 12.28.18

I agree with this statement. I think Kate should listen to those who are voicing their opinion – even if it is hard to hear – because the reality is they actually care to comment vs. just unsubscribe and not say anything. Could people be nicer? Yeah. But they are also probably fed up with the crap that is being served to them, on a silver platter that is linked to Amazon.

As a side note, mother – to – mother, Kate, this facade you seem set on portraying will one day blow up in your face. I’ve seen it happen. You spend your life chasing the dollar, shoving a phone in your kids face, criticizing your husband publicly and one day, they will be done with you. You will find yourself with adult kids who dont like you (why would they? For years they’re only purpose in your life was for content) and a husband who resents you for the way he has been treated publicly.

Figuratively, Kate, your house is on fire. We see it. We are telling you its burning. But you are ignoring us. Please, for the love of God, save yourself and your family. Find work outside of Instagram. Its costing you too much.

Kate says · 12.28.18

I donā€™t agree that influencers are ā€œtrainedā€ to accept only praise.
Many years ago I did use luvs, pampers, and even Costco diapers. Iā€™m currently only using pampers pure with Emily. Iā€™m allowed to change my mind and opinions over the span of 5 years, right? I think so.
I donā€™t know what air filter photo of my office you are referring to, may have been someone else?
The renters of our home TOLD US to open the ice cream when we contacted them to let them know it had been delivered. In fact last year they texted Justin saying they hope we enjoyed it.
Selective memory can really impact how one remembers a certain event. Especially if the lens through which someone is looking at something is skewed negative in the first place.
Iā€™ve learned a lot through the years of blogging. Itā€™s a unique job, one that comes with a ton of great along with some tough stuff. Sorting through how to run a blog with the pressure of millions of eyes is a unique challenge as well.
Iā€™ve certainly made mistakes in the past. Iā€™ve since taken a critical look at each decision I make for the blog.
This will mean little, Iā€™m sure, but there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that readers never see. Thatā€™s okay, itā€™s supposed to be that way to a degree…
Thanks for your feedback and being respectful.

I have to agree that this blog has changed. Iā€™ve been a follower for years and really appreciated the beauty/fashion posts as we have similar styles/color/build but itā€™s getting harder and harder to follow. Everything seems like one giant ad and one expensive product after another. I see a lot of other people feel the same way I do. I hope you can look past the hateful comments and see the ones like mine and others who really enjoyed your blog. You are very quick to judge and make negative comments in your stories about services and businesses but then itā€™s not ok for others to do the same. Very disappointing.

A good budget friendly option that I learned of from Kate is the Sephora line with the colorful paper tubes… they all had cute names. I purchased the Ouai color she first mentioned and then a second and I have enjoyed them both. I think theyā€™re $8? Maybe you could include a link to those?

Michele says · 12.28.18

Yes! I upbought that color, too! Itā€™s a little TOO pink for me, but it feels great in and Iā€™d definitely try other colors.

Thanks for the awesome round-up posts! Iā€™m not sure why all this hate is coming out in the comments above, but I would like to let you know that not all of your followers feel this way. I started following you in 2011 for the hair tutorials, but I just recently became a mother and I really appreciate your current content (especially Instagram). You are very genuine about your experiences as a mother and that is a breath of fresh air. And as for comments about your body, you look great! Please donā€™t be discouraged by all the negative comments. There are people that thoroughly enjoy what you post! šŸ˜‰

I agree! Iā€™m not on Instagram much, so I donā€™t know if there is something going on there that Iā€™m not aware of, but I really canā€™t understand why there is so much negativity in most of the above comments??
To me an ad on a blog is no different than a commercial during a tv show. Itā€™s how tv shows pay people and ads are how Kate gets paid. Either skip through or come back tomorrow and see if there is new content that is what you are looking for. And most of the nasty comments are trying to say they are offering ā€˜constructive criticismā€™…there is nothing constructive about tearing down someone and being plain mean.

Reply

There is. Kate offers a lot of “constructive criticism” to local business owners. This is her business. These are reviews.

Sephora has become my newest addiction this year and itā€™s been fun trying new things that I donā€™t normally get. šŸ˜¬ Ignore the haters, they must not be happy people if they can be that mean and unkind. Thereā€™s a much nicer way to leave constructive criticism. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your beautiful family!!!šŸ˜Š

Personally I love what you share!! As one mom to another, I would rather support your hustle and honestly, yes ads are annoying but instead of criticizing, why donā€™t you all go to another blog that better fits what youā€™re looking for! Yā€™all are whiny and judgy .. No one is making you read her blog or follow her insta.

Reply
Meghan says · 12.28.18

I guess my first comment wasnā€™t approved? I just wanted to say that we, as consumers of your content, are free to post feedback and have opinionsā€”positive and negative. Additionally, 99.9% of working individuals have bosses and regularly recieve all sorts of feedback. Itā€™s often uncomfortable and honestly, it can suck. But itā€™s part of having a job.

From what Iā€™m reading this seems to be your ā€œannual review.ā€ My advice would be to honestly listen to, and reflect on, what people are saying. There seems to be a real pattern emerging here.

Reply
Caroline says · 12.29.18

We are consumers of Kate’s content, but we are not her boss and we are not even her customers. We in no way pay Kate, or most other “online influencers,” for the content produced. Her blog is not subscription based. This type of work (and, yes, it’s work) is fairly new and it’s unique at that. The business model is built on numbers – page views, followers, and likes. And this type of job involves taking varying comments from all directions.

It’s hard to be sure of a “real pattern” considering there are a number of forums dedicated to discussing those that make a living through blogging and Instagram. There always seems to be a correlation between the number of negative comments on a blog post and activity on those sites – it’s as if a pile-on starts. Between Instagram and YouTube, Kate has hundreds of thousands of followers. She seems to be quite successful and some of the criticism here may very much be in the minority.

There are several comments on this post leaving negative reviews of the content, and clearly Kate is open to it as the comments haven’t been deleted. And for what it’s worth, I don’t always like what Kate shares. That means I don’t read every blog post or I skip through Instagram stories, and that’s my way of voting with my voice in this new world of ad-driven social media. It’s disingenuous to act as though Kate needs to read insults or be told her house is burning or act as if she needs to rethink her entire business.

I’ve been reading your blog for a long time- since before Pinterest was really a “thing”. And personally for me- I love the evolution of content. I’ve grown up in the last 5+ years and can appreciate that you and your world have as well. The ads don’t bother me-you need to make a living . And honestly you’re the first resource I use when I’m in need of a good beauty product. I’ve gotten many ideas from you over the years.

I can’t imagine the stress of doing what you do but I appreciate that you continue to do it despite all the negativity being thrown your way.

Happy new year!

I feel the exact same way! Iā€™ve loved watching your content grow and change. I can rely on you for great tutorials, reviews, and recommendationsā€”and I super appreciate clear ad signage (make that money! I know you donā€™t take those partnerships lightly). Itā€™s been great to add some more investment items to wishlists based on your Rexā€™s and and Iā€™ve snatched up some of the more budget friendly recommendations like the Sephora lipsticks. I am so thankful you give honest reviewsā€”I have spent more money on trying subpar drugstore products than on the higher end items Iā€™m able to sample and are easier for me to return.

Being almost the same age as you has also meant Iā€™ve tried to improve my wardrobe by focusing on staple pieces and figuring out what items I need to invest in. I love the steady stream of affordable fashion items and have also appreciated when you highlight higher quality/spendy items. Your honest feedback on Stories about Trunk Club, for example, has helped me figure out my own reasons for investing and passing on pretty things. Thank you for helping me be more intentional!

Thanks for the great content, your genuine engagement, and authenticity this year. I know you feel lucky to do what you do.. and I hope you see that we also see some of the heartaches and challenges you donā€™t freely discuss. I canā€™t imagine being the target of strangersā€™ frustration and hostility, especially when it may or may not actually be related to anything Iā€™m doing. You handle it with grace and keep doing great work.

Happy New Year!

I too hope you take some of the feedback to heart. You are the one person Iā€™ve followed for years now and as a mom I get how hard it is to juggle everything, but this blog has become so redundant with makeup tutorials that look so darn similar each time with a bunch of random ads tossed in. The ads and sponsored posts seem so staged and when you post about one product but we see others in photos or in new ads with similar products a few weeks later it just becomes so disingenuous. Are the constant skin issues truly from protein bars or from the multitude of products you use and try. Maybe it was from the bars that one time, but overall, I am terrified to try any of the products you recommend. I just feel like you need to step away for a little to regroup. You used to be my favorite read, canā€™t miss, go to gal, but over the last few years things have significantly changed. Hopefully you take in some of the feedback, regroup and get back in the ring because I really do love following you…i just want to be able to relate again and completely trust your recommendations. So in the new year (my two cents), really stream line your product endorsements especially when it comes to skin care, add more affordable options, hire someone to proof read and edit before you hit ā€œpublishā€, spend less time writing new posts and more time engaging with your community on Instagram and in DMā€™s, and mix it up so that itā€™s not just another year of makeup tutorials that ultimately look identical. Iā€™d also love some real life moments! You keep talking about what all goes into a blog behind the scenes…LET US IN!! Show us the process and open up a little more about the challenges of blogging and what life is truly like balancing it all. I truly think that if you take some of the feedback to heart, youā€™ll kick some tail in the new year. Best of luck!

I know Iā€™m a little late posting, but this negativity has really bothered me. We can share thoughts without being hateful. Kate, I think part of the problem is Instagram. I know many posts are spontaneous, but I think it would be beneficial to think about the impression you give at times. When you call people blue collar, point out that you know things because you went to beauty school, or mention that a teacher didnā€™t clean out a forgotten lunch box (even though you didnā€™t really expect her to), it comes across as being haughty and bougie. I am sure you are not that type of person, but your words are quite offputting at times. Thanks for reading, and peace and happiness for 2019!
