The moisturizer that saved my dry skin

How to combat static in hair in the winter

I’ve shared a bit on Instagram that my skin has been going through a tough time since about 2 months ago. I believe that it all started with a whey/soy protein bar that I began eating which triggered deep, cystic blemishes along my jawline and throughout my chin.

Then it spread to my t-zone. And to top it off I started battling extreme dryness around my nose and throughout my eyebrows.

My skin was angry, sensitive, and I needed to figure out how to treat it.

I skipped makeup as often as I could, went easy on products, and only used gentle hydrating options, and booked a facial.

I don’t get facials regularly but a specific esthetician was recommended to me so I set up an appointment with her. She ended up doing a salicylic acid peel during the treatment that tingled and was uncomfortable but it seemed to kill the bacteria on my face. After the facial I began using the Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream Serum + Moisturizer and I’m pleased to report that my skin is significantly better.

Hyalouronic acid is something our bodies naturally produce so adding it in via a moisturizer is just piling on with the good stuff. It is able to hold it’s weight by 6 times with water so it’s like a magnet for moisture in the air. I’ve been told that appling it on top of slightly damp skin or even with damp finger tips will make it even more effective!

There is no doubt the salicylic acid peel was a major contributor to get me on the right track, but the hope is that I don’t need to do something like that regularly because my skin isn’t usually oily–it’s dry!

I stopped using my beloved vitamin C serum and Fresh moisturizer for the time being and switched fully over to these two products. Once everything calms down I’ll integrate my other products in but for right now calm and simple is working for me. My skin feels extremely soft and hydrated and I love that.

Have you tried a moisturizer with Hyaluronic acid in it?

I have super, super dry skin, so when I run out of my current moisturiser, I’m going to check this out! The colour is beautiful as well. 🙂

I’ve been using CeraVe hydrating cleanser and moisturizer for years, and they contain hyaluronic acid! Probably in lower concentrations than Peter Thomas Roth, but it makes my skin happy enough where I re-purchase it over and over again.

Yep, CeraVe foaming cleanser and moisturizer have been my holy grail products. Also- whey protein (and dairy products in general) give me cystic acne too 🙁

When you posted on your IG story about the moisturizer, the timing was perfect as I have been on search for a new winter moisturizer. I have dry skin but during winter i need the extra moisture to keep it hydrated. I am using the moisturizer today for the first time and i can already tell difference that my skin does not feel tight. Fingers crossed it provides the moisture my skin desperately needs during this time of the year.

Since I am about out of cleanser and my Yeoth by. Acid serum, I bought the set. I hope you get some compensation for all the sales of items right after you recommend them!

I have been using Neutrogena hydro boost products lately as my skin is always horribly dry once the furnace kicks on! They also have hyaluronic acid in them. What a life saver! I have masks, hydrating serum and moisturizer. Love them!

I really love the Garnier SkinActive Moisture Bomb The Antioxidant Super Moisturizer. It also has hyaluronic acid and it seriously saved my skin last winter.

I may have to try this. I have been having a really dry patch on my cheek and need to switch what I use. I have been using R&F and it’s ok but not loving it any more. My skin has been all over the place as I get used to the Raleigh weather.

I agree about RF! I used it for awhile and loved it and then, not so much. I have been using Hydrating Serum again for the past couple of days. It’s really moisturized my skin without being oily. No, I don’t sell it 😄

It’s wonderful when you find something that works!
I also found this post about acids very informative:

I had the same thing happen last year. I slathered myself in moisturizer, cleaned my skill fastidiously, etc. I couldn’t figure it out. Come to find out I have seborrheic dermatitis. It took less than 5 minutes at the dermatologist and a couple of days of a prescription face wash and my skin was back to normal.

Trader Joes has a great Hyaluronic acid for only $8! I use it every morning and night before my moisturizer and it has done wonders to my skin

I started using Neutrogena’s hyaluronic acid line a few weeks ago, and I love it! I also went through a rough period with my skin near the end of September; I think it has a lot to do with changing seasons. Thanks for sharing your story!

I tend to get dry flakiness throughout my eyebrows and nose creases. After thinking moisturizing was the problem or my diet, low and behold! I stumbled upon a beauty regime that stopped the dryness and flakiness in its tracks! I apply a glob of dandruff shampoo straight to the areas on my face upon stepping into the shower, go about my shower routine and rinse the shampoo off at the end (what is left after splashing around). Once I’m out of the shower I apply a small dab of anti-fungal cream (usually says something like anti-fungal or for ringworm even though i don’t have ringworm)… and… wah-lah! Clear, flaky free eyebrows and nose creases! Ahhhhh!

I have this same issue, I’ll have to give that a try – thanks for posting!

Paula says · 02.27.19

I’ve had this issue since I was a teenager. It’s also in my scalp/ hairline. It’s seborrehic dermatitis. Like everything else in life, stress can make it worse as well as oil based or fragrances products. When I’m in a major flare up I use a prescription shampoo (Ketoconozole)and topical RX cream (Elidel) only in those areas.

Hylouronic acid moisturizers are good and a couple of years ago my dermatologist also suggested that in the winter I use the Cetaphil moisturizing cream (the one in the big tub) on my face. It’s cheap and works like a charm.

Hope this helps.

Hugs,
Paula

How often do you use the moisturizer and serum? Twice a day?

I have combination to oily skin and I use the Neutrogena Hydrobooat moisturizer. It’s a great drug store hyluronic avid product. I also recently saw a commercial for a L’Oréal hyluronic acid serum, although I have not used it.

I haven’t tried a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, but a couple months ago I switched to Derma-E’s Hydrating Gentle Cleanser with hyaluronic acid and my skin has dramatically improved. Even though I have oily and hormonal acne-prone skin, I was starting to see dry areas where my makeup would settle in. Now my skin is much more moisturized (I follow with Oleg Henriksen’s Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer), and my acne has calmed a lot. I’ll definitely check out these PTR products for the future!

I like that your post talked about an ingredient that you have found helpful for your skin! I think that is a big issue – I see a lot people commenting that they use a product by brand A or brand B and it works great. Unless you understand what INGREDIENTS are in your products, what they are designed to do, and if they are match for YOUR skin’s issues – you are really just guessing. Kate, have you checked out Paula’s Choice? I do not sell her products in any way, but ended up there because I had skin problems that I needed to solve. Her whole mission (and product line) is designed to teach people what is in products, and to encourage them to buy ingredients that are appropriate.

Be mindful of products with silicones.

I had horrible, painful cystic acne along my jawline and chin area after the birth of my first child. I remember he was a few months old and I thought my hormones should have regulated a bit more by then but they were out of control! I tried every acne face wash I could find and I the only thing that has helped and “fixed” my skin was Paula’s Choice Clear facewash and also their toners, exfoliants and moisturizers. My skin is the best it’s ever been now and i’m hoping with the arrival of baby #2 in January, it doesn’t go crazy again!

I had something similar a few years ago. My doctor first thought I had rosacea and gave me a prescription to treat it but it didn’t help. My skin products I’d been using faithfully with no problems all of a sudden made my skin react. My skin was angry so in order to figure it out I stopped using pretty much all products also. My doctor said to try vaseline but that didn’t work. Then I read on the internet about how you could make a tonic with epsom salts and water (epsom salts have antibacterial properties). I would spray a cotton ball with the solution, dab it on my face and let it dry. Then I applied rosehip oil (all natural) and loe and behold my skin cleared up. My skin has been good for a few years now and I’ve been able to use normal skin products again.

Have you tried Derma-E Vitamin C Concentrated Serum? It has Hyaluronic Acid and is in my opinion better than Truth Serum. It could be the best of both worlds for you (it’s a heck of a lot cheaper too).

Vitamin C serum gave me horrible cystic acne. I also have had a skin condition for 25 years that required steroids in the winter. I switched to Cerave cleanser and Mario Badescu products and I don’t recognize my own skin! Any moisturizer made for sensitive skin works well for me but this one is amazing. https://www.mariobadescu.com/product/hydrating-moisturizer-with-biocare-and-hyaluronic-acid
I also use their toners. Total skin game changer for me. Good luck !

I used this moisturizer for about a week and it made me breakout considerably more than normal. But I do have oily skin, so maybe it was just TOO much. It does feel really great going on though. So soft.

I also love that serum! Just bought my third bottle this weekend!

I use mine twice a day with Embryolisse Lait Crème Concentré, and add sunscreen in the mornings. I first learned about hyaluronic acid when I asked my dermatologist what to do about my super dry skin and she recommended the Neutrogena Hydroboost line, which is also a great option.

I am desperate for a good winter moisturizer, my skin is dry no matter how much I use so this may be a game changer! I have a bit of a silly question, what is the difference between moisturizer and serums? Should both be used daily? I’ve never used a serum before but would really like to take better care of my skin so this is a bit new for me. Thanks!
