How to coordinate lipstick and blush tones

A few things in my hospital bag + recommendations from other moms

I love wearing brighter lipsticks and blush shades in the summer, but there is an art to making sure the two don’t conflict on your face! So today, I’m breaking down how to pair the right lipstick and blush tone based on whether it’s cool, warm, or neutral!

I pulled out a bunch of different lipsticks from my stash, and unfortunately some are discontinued, but everything that is still available is linked up for you!

Let’s start with cool pinks!

cool pinks: Smashbox Be Legendary Long-Wear Lip Lacquer in Pretty Social, Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Flush, Urban Decay lipstick in Turn On, Smashbox Be Legendary lipstick in Panorama Pink

When something is referred to as “cool” or “warm” it’s describing the tone of the makeup. Cool tones often have purple, blue, or sometimes green undertones to them, so they fall on the cooler part of the color wheel. Typically if you have a pink undertone to your skin, it leans towards the cool end of the spectrum.

The easiest way to look for an undertone in lipstick is to swatch it, or apply it to your lips, and hold a purple or violet object near it to see how they compliment each other.

Next up are warm coral or orange shades.

warm corals: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Tipsy, YSL Volupte Sheer Candy in 10, Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in L.A. Sunset

Warm colors can be a bit harder to wear, but when they’re done right, they’re beautiful! Warm tones look great on yellow skin tones, or those with deep olive or darker complexions.

Finally, these tones are super versatile and can work either way!

neutral: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Seduce, Albiet Lipstick in Azalea, Bobbi Brown Crushed Lipstick in BabyMAC Cremesheen in Creme CupSmashbox Be Legendary Long-Wear Lip Lacquer in Posy Pink

These colors are soft pinks that would look great on either warm or cool undertones, and are super easy to wear!

It’s not the end of the world to mix warm and cool toned makeup, but you may find that if you try to stay within one color family your makeup will “flow” together a little bit better. My final tip is for days you want to test out wearing a really warm or bold lip color, skip the blush altogether and just wear bronzer! That way your blush won’t compete with your lipstick and you’ll have a warm tone on your lips and cheeks!

Thank you for your continuous makeup advice! I tend to veer away from lipsticks and blushes since I have no idea how to work them on my warm skin tone. Hope this’ll help! 🙂

Genius! I always realize my lipstick doesn’t work after putting it in, and it can be a pain to remove (especially highly pigmented ones). I mix my makeup on the back of my hand all the time, I’m definitely going to start swatching for complementing colors now.
Hope all is wonderful, xAllie

Very helpful post, thank you! What is your advice on trying to coordinate in eye shadow colors too? I am always nervous that my shadow doesn’t really go with my lip/blush color. Thoughts? Thanks again, and congrats on healthy and beautiful Emily! xoxo
