Exploring Natural Beauty Products

Morning Skincare Products (including a new base that is AMAZING)

The world of natural beauty products is becoming wider and wider, but also more confusing! About a month ago, I mentioned that I wanted to start exploring natural beauty products to test out their performance, but I got overwhelmed and confused on how to find products that are ACTUALLY natural.

About 1 minute into my search, I learned that the word “natural” is such a hard word to define because so many people give it a different meaning. I asked for suggestions of natural beauty products on Instagram and got direct messages sharing brands like Revlon and Maybelline. I know these product lines are not natural, so I was confused and wondered if others are too!

I spent a few hours researching and became tired of trying to decipher which brands are actually natural and which use misleading terminology. Multiple people suggested that I check out The Organic Bunny, and I found a wealth of information there! From there, I decided to just jump in and try to find products that are natural or organic as best I could, instead of obsessing over every ingredient along the way.

I can’t talk about natural beauty products without mentioning Beauty Counter. In my experience, they’ve had the biggest impact to opening up the public’s eyes to different standards of beauty products in the USA. I have tried two of their products, and was unimpressed with their skin tint and found the lip product I tried to be fairly average. Admittedly, I’ve had a very limited experience with their products, so I’m sure they have some great ones!

For this post, I wanted to round up products that were easily available for anyone to pick up on a Target or Sephora run. I’m not knocking MLM’s, heck my favorite foundation is by Arbonne, but I just wanted to keep it easy as I started the process. I also wanted to be able to quickly and easily return the products that I tried if they were terrible. I am not familiar with the return policies of some of the natural beauty MLM’s, but I’m sure that information is available through consultants or on their websites!

So, enough backstory, let’s get into the products I’ve tried and am wearing in this post!

I started by prepping my skin with these three products. Then, I applied W3ll People Bio Tint multi-action moisturizer (light) with my fingers. I found that this felt a bit dry, and almost like it was lacking the “slip” that other tinted moisturizers or foundations have. Initially it looked too dark, but it ended up blending into a nice, natural looking shade. I added RMS beauty “un” cover-up 00 to my under-eyes, eyelid, and on some dark spots I have on my chin. This product is creamy, provides light to medium coverage, and looks just like your skin! I swiped a few coats of W3ll People Expressionist Pro Mascara (black), which had a clean finish but didn’t build much length or thickness. I didn’t have those expectations, but as someone with short lashes, I always like a mascara that allows me to add a bit of extra length.

I don’t typically use a highlighter, but I had the RMS beauty living luminizer in my vanity from a past purchase. I added it to my cheekbones and the inner corner of my eye. For the price, I could most definitely live without this product, but it was nice to use since I had it!

I finished my makeup with a bit of ILIA multi-stick in Tenderly on my cheeks and lips. I didn’t like it on my lips, and found the color to be too faint on my cheeks. I had to apply it twice to make it show up. This could be a color issue or a product issue, but it’s the only one I have tried at this time! I couldn’t help but compare it to another liquid blush I’ve been using recently and found this one to be lacking in the performance department.

In general, I felt like my makeup looked very natural, glowy, and it felt light on my skin! The only non-natural products I used were a tiny bit of eyeliner smudged into my lash line, and a few Anastasia brow products. This doesn’t mean I haven’t found eyeliner or eyebrow products that I like yet, but I haven’t done a lot of research just yet!

By the evening, roughly 8 hours after applying the makeup that morning, I found the longevity of the products to be pretty impressive. I wondered if the foundation would seperate and get flakey, but I didn’t experience that at all. The blush was so light to begin with, I felt like I wish I would have applied more, but I think it could be a wrong color choice instead of a poorly performing product.

In general, I was really pleased with all of these products! If you are interested in going the “natural” route with your makeup, I’d recommend giving these a try!

List of products use:

W3ll People Bio Tint multi-action moisturizer (light)

W3ll People Expressionist Pro Mascara (black)

RMS beauty “un” cover-up 00

RMS beauty living luminizer

ILIA multi-stick in Tenderly

I think it’s awesome you’re making the switch to natural beauty products! Slowly, but surely. I hope to make the same commitment and I’m trying, so thank you for the recommendations. You’re glowing in the photos, beautiful. 🙂

Kate- Glad to see you exploring this topic! A suggestion… walk into your local Whole Foods store and go to the “whole body” area. You’ll find an entire section devoted to natural products, including many of the most popular natural & organic makeup brands (Dr Haushka, Avalon, Burts Bees, etc, etc). And the salesperson devoted to that area will be able to show you around. HTH!

Krysten says · 03.18.18

Unfortunately Burt’s Bees was purchased by Clorox and they changed almost all of their formulas since then. They are not all natural which is a bummer. Just because products are sold at Whole Foods doesn’t mean they are natural or safe!

Happy to see this post! Your tutorials are always so helpful, and as there can be a learning curve with natural products, it’s nice to have you as our guide! I’ve been learning more about natural makeup and skincare too, and I’ve had good luck with Origin products and their Zinger mascara. Detox market is also a great place to browse online. Looking forward to more natural beauty posts!

I switched over to only “clean” makeup a couple months ago and love it! My favorite brands are RMS, Tata Harper for cheek tints, Antonym for powder, and Ilia for lipsticks. It is hard to research but I like using http://www.copalcleanbeauty.com. I find the makeup does look like my skin but better too!

If you’re interested in natural/green beauty products that perform more akin to conventional products I’d look into Kosas (for lipsticks/blush), Rituel De Fille (literally everything in their line is amazing BUT their eye soots really stand out), Mineral Fusion (their powder blushes+bronzers are fantastic), Clove and Hallow (for concealer, foundation powder and liquid lipsticks) AND finally Antonym Cosmetics (their powder products are A+). Also, my favorite natural mascara is by Honest Beauty (it comes with a primer which helps for length and dramatic effect).

Love this post! I find it so hard to find products that are 100% natural sometimes. My best friend works in the natural & organic product field and her suggestion is always to go to a natural food store and ask the staff there for their makeup suggestions. The majority of the staff will have natural beauty suggestions that work well.

I went the natural route 8 years ago when I was trying to get pregnant with my little boy. I have wasted a ton on money on trying out lots of brands. The Honest Beauty mascara is the best by far and I’ve tried them all! I still haven’t found a foundation I truly love better than Bare Minerals Bare Pro, but I’m always hunting!

Wonderful to see some natural options! I’ve switched to about 95% natural products and there is a learning curve for sure. I don’t sell BeautyCounter but I have fallen in love with many of their products. I’d suggest giving them another try. They’ve reformulated many products and I find them to be better than they were 1-2 years ago. RMS has great stuff but you’re right, it’s pricey. I am willing to pay more for safer products when I consider the health implications of the thousands of chemicals in traditional products. Thanks for diving in here, hope to see more in the future!

The Environmental Working Group has a database-www.ewg.org that evaluates beauty products for their toxicity. Not all products are on there. For the last couple of years I have been in search of makeup and skin care that is low in toxicity and at affordable pricing, which is not easy to find.

I second the suggestion of going to Whole Foods! They have a good selection there. I’m glad to see you do a post on natural makeup, as I try to buy mostly natural but it’s hard to find honest performance-based opinions on how the products actually stand up, as opposed to simply “it’s chemical/paraben/whatever free so it HAS to be good!” I want clean makeup that actually works! Thanks for your post, and I hope you continue to review natural products in the future!

You need to go to Whole Foods and try many of the products they offer. I’ve had great success with every line I have tried.

Reply
Elizabeth says · 03.14.18

I should add that I wouldn’t consider every makeup product at Whole Foods “natural” but they have narrowed it down considerably for me. I definitely still read labels though!

Reply
Alicia says · 03.14.18

Try the Think Dirty phone app. I was shocked at how chemically dirty a lot of Whole Foods products are. There is also a huge inconsistency across lines. A company may have one or two products that are clean but not all are, the app will tell you which are and which aren’t, it was very eye-opening!

Description like natural and organic, unfortunately, don’t mean safe for your skin and body. I am switching over to Beautycounter and have loved what I have used….face moisturizer, skin tint, concealer, lipstick. I keep using them because they are safe. Use the Skin Deep Cosmetics Website ewg.org. It is a an eye-opener all the products I used to us that are high medium to high on the toxic levels. LOVE YOUR BLOG! You are refreshing and love your humour too. Bye from Vancouver, BC Canada.

Would you maybe do a post on (or if anyone has any suggestions) “natural” products that can also be used for more dramatic looks. I feel like most of the products I have seen are best used in “no make-up make-up looks”. While I do love those looks, sometimes I want to amp it up.

Reply
Christina says · 03.14.18

Hi Kate, I’ve been trying truly natural nakeup products for a decade. It’s hard to find foundation that covers fully like conventional products but my favorite so far are from Fitglow Beauty, Gressa, and Crunchi. Many websites that sell natural and organic products will have samples that you can purchase if you want to try before investing in full priced items. Hope this helps! Christina

I love RMS! The founder is truly passionate about making products that are safe for anyone to use. Perhaps if you do another review of “natural” products, you could include ingredients that make them beneficial to use? For example, RMS is coconut oil based and works very well for dry skin. Second, I have never seen RMS, Ilia, W3II People at Target. Heck, even my local Sephora doesn’t carry these brands in store so I have to order them online. What “natural” brands could someone buy on a Target run? Actually, that would be a really great future blog post!

W3ll people is at all of the target stores in my area. Don’t know about the other brands but target has really amped up their “natural” beauty section recently.

Thanks for the great post! I’ve been slowly switching over to natural products for a while. I live in Boston and there is a store called Follain that has all natural beauty and also an online store. I know I have sent you this question before, and you did answer, but since you did this post .. I was wondering if you looked into Purlisse products? I do believe they are somewhat a natural product as well, and very light and dewy on the skin. I am almost 50 and use the BB tinted moist cream with SPF30 and the Blue Lotus Essential Daily Moisturizer wtih SPF30 and love the light airy dewy feel they give me.

Love that you’re starting to review more natural products. I’ve slowly started to transition to using more of them, and I trust your opinion so much! I have to agree with you on BeautyCounter’s tint skin… not a fan, but I love their facewash, moisturizer, and concealer!

A resource I like to use to determine is EWG. I look up products I’m using to see their “grade” to make an informed decision if I want to keep using it. While products may not be deemed “natural”, I get a good idea of what’s in it and how “toxic” the prodcut is. Just thought I’d share!

I’m so glad you did this post! We shouldn’t have to sacrifice our health for the sake of beauty. 🙂 I switched my products to safer options about two years ago. It definitely can be overwhelming. Beautycounter’s website is a great resource. Their Never List is really helpful so you know what ingredients to avoid. Their Tint Skin foundation is a bit light on coverage, but using their skincare products has completely cleared up my skin, so light coverage is all I need on days I wear makeup. I highly recommend giving their skincare a try and revisiting their makeup. Their Charcoal Face Mask is my favorite product. It works great as overnight spot treatment too, when you get a random breakout.

Sadly, the beauty industry is not regulated by the FDA and a lot of companies are advertising their products as “clean” when they are not or they might have one or two products that are but the rest are dirty.

The Think Dirty phone app is a good resource to scan products to find out their level of chemical dirtiness. I was shocked to learn that so many products I thought were clean are not and the inconsistency across lines, if they have one clean product, shouldn’t their whole line be clean. That tells me they are dishonest.

Savvy Minerals is a really great clean line of cosmetics that actually perform too. As a rep, I would buy back any product you were not satisfied with if you wanted to try them. 🙂

Even the word “natural” is so misleading. Cadmium is a natural product, as is lead…and both are harmful to our health. We have to do our own homework when it comes to beauty product (and even items such as deodorant, soap and toothpaste as well!!) because as a country we are so far behind on regulations of what can go into these products.
Pick a company that is 100% transparent on what goes into their products. Know what to avoid. EWG and Think Dirty are great resources to look into.
Check out Beautycounter’s “Never List”. (and you don’t have to have a consultant to shop Beautycounter’s products either! That’s what makes us a Direct Retail company, and not an MLM ; you can just go to beautycounter.com.)

Yay! I have been hoping you would review organic products for such a long time! I love your blog but I don’t buy any of the products you write about as I only buy organic, and even more importantly, cruelty-free product. It’s easy to keep our head in the sand about the manufacturing of makeup, but really, this industry is so under-regulated, people have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. Well anyway, I just wanted to highly suggest Jane Iredale products. By far the best I have found so far. 100% Pure also has some nice cruelty-free products, although some have disappointed me. And by the by, we want Part 4 of how you met Justin!!!

Have you come across Credo Beauty yet? They recently opened a store near me, and it’s been the nudge I needed to move away from Sephora and to clean beauty products. I highly recommend checking out a store if you are ever near one. I was lost in the brands, but they do samples and tutorials. I’ve fallen in love with some products that are high-end quality and, thankfully, avoided some skincare items that disagreed with me by sampling first. Just a suggestion as you continue searching!

For an amazing truly good-for-you lip product…Bite Beauty found easily at Sephora. I can’t even express how amazing this lip formula is. The fact that it’s also a truly natural product is such a plus. It’s pricy but with any thing on our lips going right I to our mouth, its worth it. I’ve gotten my 17 yr old daughter finding out the toxicity on all the makeup she buys and she only wears Bite lipstick too but for her it’s mostly about the wonderful formula. We like the creme lipstick and high pigment lip crayon as well. The matte crayon is nice too. We don’t care for the multi stick or the liquified lipstick at all. Lip pencils and agave lip treatments are winners, too.

Beautycounter (I don’t sell it!) Dew Skin, cream blush, and volume mascara are the best. W3ll People didn’t work for me but I loved Ilia when I tried it. Everyday minerals (and most other natural loose mineral makeup) was a flop. I’m so-so on Savvy Minerals (by young living) — good lipgloss and multi-tasker; disappointing eyeshadow. You may want to try Mineral Fusion at Whole Foods and Honest Beauty. Burt’s Bees also has a new makeup line, and aside from what other comments have said, their goal was a new, natural, formulation, regardless of who owns them.

I live in Canada so W3ll People is only available in limited places and unfortunately not near me but we have a Sephora which carries RMS. I bought the “un” cover-up along with a powder. Tried the cover-up today and I love how light it is. I don’t wear a lot of makeup to begin with so this is just enough. Plus, I actually know what the ingredients are! I haven’t tried the powder yet but am looking forward to that. I get the t-zone oiliness so am hoping that will help with that. I use Mineral Fusion cosmetics and they are one of the cleaner brands at Whole Foods. They are EWG Verified now as well. I love Organic Rosehip Oil as my Serum and Derma e makes a great SPF 30 Non Nano Zinc lotion for the face that doesn’t turn white on the skin. I basically use natural oils on my skin rather than skincare. I am 64 and my skin never looked better now than the years of the expensive department store brands I used to use. I am saving a bundle using natural organic oils along with my SPF 30 day lotion. Easy, natural and simple!

Thanks for recommending The Organic Bunny, Kate!

I totally agree that we shouldn’t obsess over every ingredient. But it is nice to do our own research and get familiar with the usual toxic ingredients at the same time!

Thanks for letting us know that you think Beauty Counter’s lip products are pretty average. I’ll check out Ilia instead. I like very subtle looks so I think the lack of pigment will work in my favour!

I had a quick look at Ilia’s multi stick ingredients and I have to say I’m quite impressed – no lanolin oil (sheep glands) or carmine (crushed bugs) – both common in mainstream lipsticks.

For any readers looking to go natural (or vegan), we recently posted a piece exposing some lipstick ingredients to avoid. Plus, we discuss future lipstick innovations that will be particularly exciting for natural ingredient fans!

Thanks again for the recommendations here – can’t wait to try out the Ilia multistick,

Laura.

So interesting, I wonder which lip product Kate tried… BC’s long-wear color intense lipsticks are one of the things that really impressed me!! And their lip sheers are oh so moisturizing and smooth… Super curious now 🙂

Kate, this is so helpful!

After seeing your Beautycounter “first” impressions on insta stories 😉 I’ve been curious if there was a follow-up review! So I searched your blog, and I don’t know how I missed this post last year. 🙂 Amen to the industry being confusing about “green” or “natural,” etc. Thanks so much for diving in and tackling it a bit for us!

P.S. I’ve been a customer of BC’s for a couple years and their return policy is great! (Free returns, full refunds, & can try product for 60 days.) 🙂

I’m also so surprised at the number of brands you wouldn’t assume test on animals but in fact do.
