How to apply false lashes (for beginners!)

I’m not sure if my hair has ever been in better condition. While there are still some dry parts that could just generally use a significant cut, the majority of my hair feels healthy and strong.

And for a blonde who has been lightening her hair for years, that is quite a statement.

The most significant changes have been from some new products, and also adjusting my expectations for the level of blonde I can achieve. While I’d love to be super bright, light, cool blonde, my hair simply can’t handle that level of lightness. So I’ve settled for a more sandy, beige-y blonde that still feels light enough but doesn’t have the iciness to it.

So what have I been using? I’ll tell you all about it in the graphic below!

earrings, top

one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight

I mention this in my recent favorites video, but I really have loved the Moroccan Oil treatment light. I thought it was formulated for light hair (for some reason I imagined seeing a “light” and “dark” option at the beauty store, but apparently not!) but it’s just a lighter oil. I’ve been so happy with how this has made my hair feel that it’s probably a holy grail product for me already. I bring it to the gym, on trips, and use it daily at home!

Another leave-in product that I’ve loved for a long time but haven’t mentioned on the blog in awhile is the It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product. This smells so great and makes my hair feel really soft.

I’ve been using Oribe Gold Lust Shampoo and Conditioner somewhat regularly, and it’s a very luxurious set. My hair feels fantastic, and I love that it doesn’t weigh it down but still makes it feel very moisturized.

I linked to a few other products that I’ve loved for a long time as well. Redken’s All Soft may be the most softening shampoo on the planet. And the Living Proof Restore mask is great for a deep conditioner that makes your hair feel strong and healthy.

p.s. I know this is random, but isn’t this bracelet beautiful?

I’ve heard so much about that Morrocan oil treatment. It sounds really good, might give it a try one day! Thank you for recommending these haircare products. 🙂

Kate, any recommendations for dry scalp? Would an oil treatment work well for that? Thanks!

Reply
Kate says · 02.08.18

It may, but I don’t typically like oil treatments because they weigh the hair down so much! Try adding Head & Shoulders into your routine every few days. That should help the dry scalp!

Agree with you on the Oribe gold lust products! About a year ago, my hair was dried, fried, crispy and NOTHING, not even it’s a 10, coconut oil, deep penetrating masks, etc., could save my hair. I reluctantly listened to my stylist and bought the gold lust. (Its not cheap). It has literally changed my hair back to what it was pre adulthood, precolored, etc.

It’s a 10 is my all time favorite leave in! I have always struggled with my hair either being too dry without leave ins, but too silky with them, so my hair styles don’t like to hold unless it’s stick straight, any suggestions?

You should try the Marrekesh line of hair care products. I am allergic to the preservative in most products but not in these. My stylest used the finishing oil on my hair a few months ago and it was so good I ended up ordering the shampoo and conditioner. Finally, I have beautiful, well behaved hair, that doesn’t itch:)

I’m curious if you have tried Monat? I’m on my second week and it’s pretty good so far.

Kate, if you are interested in trying Monat, please let me know. I would be glad to send you some to try. I started using it this fall and absolutely fell in love with them. So much so I started selling them. They have been a game changer for my hair. It has never been so soft or healthy! I have never done anything like this before! Sorry if this is not the right way to approach you. I have followed you for years. 🙂

DONt use Monat or Moroccan oil! They both cause major hair loss at the root! Sad part is it takes a few months for the damage to happen….

Reply
Sue says · 03.23.19

I’ve been using Monat for more than a year and have NO hair loss; only hair growth – significant hair growth! I love it!!!

Reply
Andi says · 02.12.18

Monat is HORRIBLE! Stop now!! I know 2 people who lost a lot of hair in the front. Moroccan oil and Monat are the worst!! It causes hair loss at the roots!

I love Moroccan oil products. I style my hair in the winter because in the summer it’s too humid and so I have major split ends. Definitely going to work on using some of these!

Do you use the It’s a 10 Miracle Leave in Product and the Moroccan Oil Treatment Light together when your hair is wet? Or 10 Miracle Leave in Product when hair is wet and Moroccan Oil Treatment Light on ends when hair is dried?

Reply
Nicole says · 02.08.18

Love this list! Kate do you think these products will work well for thin hair with oily roots and dry ends? Or is there anything else you’d recommend instead? Thanks!

I see someone else mentioned Monat. Curious on Kate’s take. Reviews and result pictures are compelling, but the products are super expensive. I wonder how they compare to the products in this blog post.

I love Monat, it’s been a hue game changer for my hair. I love that they’re all natural and actually work. The products are more than redkin but they’re highly concentrated so you use much less. 1 bottle is suppose to be good for 120 washes, I started using in October and I’m still on the same bottles. Hope this help!

How often are you using each of these products? I imagine alternating shampoo and conditioners, but the other items???

Reply
Kate says · 02.08.18

I use the moroccan oil daily, and alternate the other products! I don’t use Redken All Soft but wanted to add that in as an option for those with very dry hair!

Hi Kate, I have a section of hair near my bangs that is extremely damaged–I used a cheap round brush and it melted in my hair. It looks so bad. Is there anything I can do to help repair it? Do protein treatments help? Thanks so much for your advice!

Reply
Kate says · 02.08.18

Yes protein treatments help, just don’t do TOO many of them. The less heat you can apply to that section, the better!

I love It’s a 10 products!! That leave in conditioner literally saved my hair working as a lifeguard during summers in college. Love it!

Reply
Katherine says · 02.08.18

Absolutely agree about lightening hair too much and causing damage! I love pale, icy blonde hair too but the damage catches up quickly. My hair starts to break off and look fragile and bad! Keeping the blonde slightly more golden and alternating with lowlights has been the biggest game changer in the health of my hair. The Pureology mask that you recommended awhile back is also a big difference-maker. Expensive but worth it!

I’ve been using ava brand argon oil (i’m sure similar to Moroccan oil – it’s not cheap) but i feel like i have a layer of gunk on my hair even after i wash it. Would a clarifying shampoo help this or what do you suggest? I know the easy answer is stop using the oil but i’m almost at the bottom and i paid so darn much for the stuff i’m determined to finish it! If anyone has a suggestion i’d appreciate it!

Thinking about our hairs health is so important but so many people don’t think about it before they lighten and dye. I’m super proud of how healthy my hair is and when people ask about going and staying bright blue, purple and pink the first thing I tell them is that the investment is much deeper than the salon price – I am super picky and put a lot of money and effort in to colour and health maintenance.
I also love the living proof products and swear by Bumble&Bumble’s hair line!

I’m always struggling to find products that work for my hair. I have thick brown hair and I find whenever I use conditioner or any leave in product my hair gets greasy faster or it has a weird texture (almost like a build up). But when I don’t use products my hair looks dry…
any suggestions ??? Do you think these products would help?

I like Marrakesh Hair products. Unfortunately I am allergic to the preservative in most hair care products. My stylist used the oil on my hair and I like it so much I order the shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask. Good luck. When your hair doesn’t look good ain’t nothing right:)

Reply
Kate says · 02.13.18

Your stylist may be able to better guide you here since I can’t feel your hair. Just make sure you don’t apply any of these products to the root area!

Andi says · 02.12.18

Don’t use Moroccan oil!! It’s so horrible for your hair! It leaves a horrible residue and it hardly has any Argan Oil in it. It clogs your hair with unbalanced silicones so the real Argan Oil won’t penetrate it. They know that at Moroccan oil and that’s why they don’t put a lot of the good stuff in it. It causes major hair loss too! Google is Moroccan oil bad for my hair and read the article by the Vancouver mobile stylist. You have such pretty hair! I don’t want bad things to happen to it because of Moroccan oil!

Hi there! I found your lovely blog while searching for shampoo and conditioner reviews. This is a great resource, and I plan to stop by more often! I have long, wavy, thick hair and am looking for an affordable shampoo and conditioner that is light-weight (no residue) and helps keep my hair shiny. I don’t use color and have auburn red hair. I wash my hair about twice a week. Thanks so much for any product recommendations!

Hi,
I just found you on Andrea Ali’s channel… you two were adorable! Such lovely women complementing eachother… simply fantastic.
I’ve had 3 beautiful children and a stressful life… causing hair loss. I use to have a lot of fine straight hair. I’m wondering what products you would suggest. I’ve recently tried “La Vie” and ran out, I had some L’Ange. And it seems to be an issue, but I tend to hear only from people with thick dry hair. Mine tends to be very oily. I can only go two days without washing and I use dry shampoo on that second day, but then my scalp gets itchy. Help!
Thanks, Mary 🙂

The Moroccan Oil light oil is for lighter hair. It’s 50% lighter in weight and color. As a hairstylist, if my blonde clients use the regular oil, they tend to turn brassy over time vs when using the light oil
