A few pregnancy notes + thoughts

Well if you haven’t heard the news by now, I’m expecting my 3rd child! I’m due in early May and very very excited to meet this little baby!

Since I spent the entire first trimester in secret because I couldn’t spill the beans, I thought it would be nice to have a conversational type post with you today. I’m 16 weeks now, feeling very good overall, and already starting to feel the baby move and kick a little bit (which is my favorite part of pregnancy)!

I already had a strong suspicion by the time I discovered that I was pregnant. Justin and I had been trying so I knew it was a possibility, and I started feeling off about a week before my missed cycle. When I was within the window for taking pregnancy tests, I took one and immediately saw 2 pink lines show up on the test.

I took the test in the middle of the afternoon one day while Justin was gone on a shoot for his business, Luke was napping, and David and I were hanging out downstairs. I actually took the test, laid it on the floor, and forgot about it for about 30 minutes. When I walked past the bathroom, I saw the test and quickly thought to pick it up before Justin got home. As I picked it up, I saw the news and my heart started pounding. I went and sat in a chair in our front room and prayed + rejoiced about this news. I LOVED finding out alone so I had time to really soak it in and prepare to tell Justin!

That night, we were having friends over for dinner so I decided to tell him the following day. The next day was a Sunday and we had some fun family time that evening at a park. Justin was chasing the boys around a baseball diamond and I was sitting nearby bursting at the seams with my news and imagining another little boy or girl out there with them in a few years. After the kids were in bed that evening, I set a little gift box on the kitchen counter and told Justin I picked something up for him today at Target. I had bought little baby booties and put them inside the box. He happened to get a phone call, so he sat on the phone for about 45 minutes in the same room as the HUGE NEWS waiting for him in the box while I cleaned up in the kitchen. I was dying. That phone call seemed to last forever.

When he finally said goodbye, he walked over and looked at the box. He quickly looked up at me and said, “Are you pregnant?” before he had even opened the box!! I started to cry and said yes, and he opened it up to see the little baby booties inside. It was a sweet evening together and I’m so glad I got to surprise him with the news!

I felt pretty great until about week 6 when the nausea hit BIG TIME. And then the fatigue arrived shortly afterward. Holy moly the fatigue was the worst! I could barely get off the couch. I was physically ill and suffered all-day nausea until I got on some medication from my doctor. That helped big time but the only unfortunate side effect was that the medication caused MORE FATIGUE. It was a rough few weeks, but Justin took good care of me and basically ran our household and managed the boys for about a month. I remember taking a nap on the couch from 1:00-1:20 every day that the kids were in preschool before I had to go pick them up. It was all I could do to make it through the day until dinnertime.

Thankfully sleeping at night has been consistent, I’m just finding myself feeling deeply tired upon waking up. I think that has to do with the medication that I’m hoping to ween off of soon.

We told the boys about the news when I was about 11 weeks along. We recorded telling them and it’s the sweetest video in the whole world. I watch it roughly once a week!

All my doctor’s appointments have been normal, which is a blessing, and we have the anatomy ultrasound in a few weeks. We are NOT finding out if it’s a boy or a girl! 🙂 We found out with David, and didn’t find out with Luke. It was so much fun to be surprised in the operating room with the sex of the baby (I have c-sections, so Justin got to tell me that Luke was a boy!) and I knew I had to have that experience again. There are so few surprises like that in life, and I loved doing it that way. Justin would be open to finding out but is totally fine with waiting too!

I’ll be having another c-section with this baby since I have had 2 already. I recover quickly and pretty painlessly from c-sections in my experience, and can only hope that this third one is the same.

As far as the boys’ ages, David is turning 4 in just a few short weeks, and Luke will be 3 in February. I love that they are 14 months apart, and am equally excited to have only one little baby to care for while my boys are little bit more self-sufficient at their respective ages.

I’ll share more as time goes on, but I wanted to tell you a little bit about that first trimester and finding out the wonderful news! I’ve received a few requests for maternity outfits via Instagram DM’s so I’ll be sharing a post about my favorites soon!

My kids are adults but exactly the same-my two sons are 14 mos. apart and my daughter was born when they were 3 and 4. I wasn’t sick at all with the boys but had horrible nausea with my daughter. Also had C-sections and bounced back fast. Enjoy-it really is the best time when they are little ones.

I loved reading this post – it was so personal and it was just everything I would want to know if one of my friends were pregnant! I can’t imagine trying to keep the news from my husband for a whole day – I would BURST. He was putting away groceries when I took the pregnancy test and found out I was pregnant with our daughter. I ran out of the bathroom crying and shaking and jumping up and down I was so excited and screaming “i’m pregnant!” Then I was in disbelief and made him drive me to the drugstore to get another test so I could take it too. I loved finding out together because I cannot keep a secret!

Congratulations!! There is something sweet about having number 3 a little bit younger than the first two. Mine were 4 and 5 when I had my ladt baby. You get to see them learn how to “help” and love another little one. And you get to live in two different phases of life, little baby phase full of snuggles and dependency and preschool full of fun conversations and discovery.

What a sweet view on it! I’m pregnant with #2 and they’ll be just under 2 years apart, and we want to wait a few years before having more. You just gave me even more reason to look forward to that stage as well! 🙂

I am so happy for you and your family! I have six years between my boys and with my second pregnancy I was so sick during my first trimester that I wasn’t able to do much at all except rest on the couch. Enjoy the journey with this precious gift from God.

Congrats again! We’re due around the same time – early May. I was pretty sick for a while too, but thankfully feel more normal now. Glad to hear you’re doing better!

You should ask if your hospital does a clear drape at delivery with your c-section. I had it with my 2nd and it was amazing to see her the moment she came out! You don’t see anything going on, just the baby and it was so wonderful.

I’m so excited for you and your family!! I was surprised for my first 2, then with my third I just wanted if I was adding more boys or finally have a little pink in my life!

Did you mean to say that your nap was really only 1-1:20?

Sheesh, I’m sure that phone call felt like it was HOURS long. My husband would have tried to open the box while he was still on the phone, so at least Justin did things in the right order <3

I'm so excited for you! Your boys will be such good helpers. I was 4 when my brother was born and just love that age difference. We weren't always up in each other's business, but now that we're adults we have such a rich friendship. I hope it's the same for your sweet 3!

Hello Kate! And congratulations!! I have been a reader for a while and have overlapped a few times with you on having my kids. I have three girls, 6, 3, and 22 months. I also had c-sections with all three. I love to hear other mom’s experiences with pregnancy, delivery, and adjusting to life with a new little one. I remember you tipping me off to Camp Patton as well. Such exciting news for your family! I enjoy our blog! I like to read it with my peanut butter toast breakfast in the mornings after I’ve got my daughter off to school. Congratulations to you all!

Congratulations!!! We just had our firstborn in September and did not find out the gender. It was the absolute best surprise ever! I had an emergency c-section and I remember being totally shocked to hear the doctor say, “it’s a girl!” So shocked (really thought I was having a boy) that I almost didn’t believe him until he lifted her up over the sheet of the operating table! Haha!

Anyway, very happy and excited for you!! Praying you feel better and better everyday!

P.S. Pinkblush maternity were probably my favorite maternity clothes. They don’t really look like maternity clothes either, so I’m still wearing some of the tops.

Are you on Diclegis? I’m 31 weeks today and only weaned myself off of it a few weeks ago. It was a GODSEND. It wasn’t available with my first, 4 years ago, and I was so miserable – Zofran just didn’t cut it. I’m having our second girl and can’t wait to meet her! Congrats on your pregnancy, Mama!!

Did you choose to have C sections? or did you have to have one with your first?

Reply
Kate says · 12.01.17

David was breech so I had to have one with him, chose one for Luke, and because I’ve had 2 I have to have another one with this baby.

Hi Kate! Congratulations! I am pregnant with baby #2 due June 4th. I felt awful in the beginning myself. Really bad nausea, heartburn and exhaustion. I still don’t feel great but it’s not as bad. Hopefully soon I will start feeling like myself again! How do you compare how you felt with David and Luke to baby #3?

Reply
Carol H says · 11.30.17

Finding out the gender is also a surprise in the ultrasound. For some people, planning is a necessity. To each their own, but it’s not a bad thing to find out.

Reply
Kate says · 12.01.17

I certainly don’t think it’s a bad thing to find out. We found out with David! It isn’t a right or wrong decision, but a personal choice!

Reply
Allicia says · 12.01.17

I agree, we waited to find out as well & I also had a c-section it was such a sweet experience to find out in the OR together that we had a baby boy! I totally get why some people find out, & that works for them – plus all those gender reveal ideas are fun! Not right or wrong at all – but I do encourage people to wait bc it is such a fun experience!

I am about to pop in a month with baby no 4, and for this one i am going with a midwife. She has me on amazing supplements for all my aches and pains 😉 (the older you get, the harder it gets with each pregnancy!) and for energy she has me taking a tbsp of liquid chlorophyll in juice morning and evening. It works wonders. Just a helpful tip!

Congratulations on your pregnancy.! What a blessing!! I wanted to ask you if you’ve heard of the “Growing Kids God’s Way” study. The secular version is sold in bookstores and is called, “On Becoming Baby Wise”. It’s a wonderful scheduling program written by a Christian doctor named Dr. Robert Bucknam. You may find it helpful (if needed) since you will have 3 little ones. It sure helped us with our boys when they were babies (2 years apart) and then again when we adopted our girls (age 3 and 7) at the time. Just a thought!
So enjoy your blog.! Best wishes to you and your family!
