Fall Goals & Plans

Summer Detox: home edition

Whew, we made it through detox week! Have you been following along? I hope you learned a bit about something new, and perhaps feel revived after doing some of the “today’s takeaway” at the bottom of each post. Since we detoxed summer, it’s time for fall right?

If by fall you mean pool party this weekend, then fall it is! We’re having a few friends over this weekend for an end of summer pool party, but we don’t typically “close” our pool for the season. Justin has gotten into a really good rhythm of keeping our water perfect, so I imagine he’ll just maintain that through the winter so we are ready to go next year!

Anyway, despite having summery weather upon us, I’m in fall mode after visiting my sister in Northern Virginia last weekend. It’s beautiful up there! I had been up to Washington, DC, but hadn’t ever traveled west of the city. Lauren and Mike only live about 45 minutes from downtown, depending on traffic of course, and they are surrounded with winery’s, apple orchards, rolling hills, hiking trails, and more. It’s such a different place to live for both of them, having left Chicago to move to Virginia, and I hope they make the most of living up there.

Before they move to Raleigh, as I’m begging them to.

Anyway, Lauren and I set up some fall plans when we were together and I’m looking very forward to each of them. Like most people, I love Fall so we are trying to make the most of it.

We are going camping in Northern Virginia in October, and going to try to pick apples a few weeks before that. She and Mike may try to come down to hit the NC State Fair, which is a sight to behold, mainly for the corn and funnel cakes.

We’ll try to get the kids over to a corn maze and to pick pumpkins. Last year my friend Rebecca and I went to the “you pick your own” section of a farm, and the farm operator came over and told us we just enjoy the farm on a day that it was normally closed because they were expecting a field trip. It was about 95% less crowded than any other day, so that was a huge win for us!

On the personal front, I’m going to continue my quest for perfect homemade pizza. I’m also going to try to do a better job at keeping my house plants alive. And much more personally, I joined a women’s bible study through my church that I’m looking really forward to.

If this summer is any indication of how busy 1 small family of 4 can be, I’m sure we’ll the same or even add more to our schedule this fall.

Do you have any fall plans or goals?

P.S. I have this cardigan in grey + black and it is my FAVORITE. How do you feel about the mule trend?

Great fall plans! I have been following you for years so I am sure you are so glad to have your sister close by again. My twin sister lives a mile away from me and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I have 2 year old twins so I enjoy reading what you are up to as your life is just as busy! Here in Chattanooga, TN, fall is beautiful. I am also looking forward to fall festivals, tailgating and cooler weather!

In regards to the mule trend, NO!!!

Have a great weekend!
Jenny

Ahh, why is fall so soon? I’m not looking forward to the cooler weather, and have yet to set my goals! That said, I’m so ready for the tuned-down humidity!

Still need to set my goals!

Girlfriend, you need one of these: https://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/breville-crispy-crust-pizza-maker/?pkey=e%7Cbreville%2Bcrispy%2Bcrust%2Bpizza%2Bmaker%7C150%7Cbest%7C0%7C1%7C24%7C%7C1&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH
Perfect homemade pizza every time! I’m a huge pizza lover and extremely picky about a nice crispy crust. This will get it done. It’s by far my favorite piece of kitchen equipment.

Awe, so nice to hear kind words about Northern VA! I live in Alexandria and it really is a gem of it’s own 🙂 Time to enjoy all the activities fall has to offer!

I have enjoyed the detox series this week. I tried the baking soda detox, and wow! My hair felt so much better after.
I have tried on the mules and like the look but I haven’t found a pair that stay on my feet when I walk!
Be sure to stop in Fredericksburg on your way up to your sister’s and say hello!😜

Yes – I’m already looking forward to fall! We will do some hiking, watch lots of football, visit a pumpkin patch, enjoy a hayride…also hoping to put in a fire pit.

I’d love to know which Bible study you’re doing!

I wasn’t ready for fall but now that it’s officially September, I’m excited.

As for the mule trend, a resounding no! I didn’t like them when they were trendy in the 90s……slipped off my feet.

Great plans! It’s been chilly here (Hamilton, ON) for the past week, so we’re dressing for Fall already!

Your detox series has gotten me motivated, so I think my main goal will be to get our basement back in order (new flooring, reorganize/redecorate my craft studio/office), as well as just de-clutter the entire house. After going through the boys’ clothes last night and generally cleaning up, we seriously have too much stuff! My main goal will be to truly get rid of a lot of stuff and simplify our lives a bit.

I am so ready for fall. It was super chilly here in MD this morning (I actually work in the outskirts of DC) and I loved it. I even got to break out a scarf. 🙂

However the mules thing…not a fan. Mostly because I’m clumsy and can walk out of my shoes way too easily to wear them.

Sounds like a fun fall! I’m hoping we can find a nearby orchard to visit!

Kate, I’ve been on a quest to master pizza at home too! I just posted about it on my blog. If you have time, you should check it out. If not, I would suggest the book, Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day. It has the best recipe for olive oil dough and is the only one I will ever use again… and it’s super easy to whip up, no kneading!

That bottle of wine is hysterical! My sister-in-law would love that!

Have a nice weekend!

We used to make homemade pizza all the time when I was growing up (and we made EVERYTHING from scratch) – it’s a habit I want to get back into! We also love grilling our pizzas; it’s really fun and everyone gets to choose their own toppings! http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-grill-pizza-cooking-lessons-from-thekitchn-120920

Loved the detox week! Gonna try implementing some soon, when my life slows down a bit. And here in Canada it’s definitely cooling off. Yay for pumpkin spice everything!

Friends don’t let friends wear mules! Eeeeeehhh, I just can’t get on board with this. Not only do I think they’re ugly, the NOISE they make when you tromp around an office is ridiculous.
Of course that’s just my lovely opinion :).

Haha! There has to be a way to walk in them without clamping around though!

Mules. I did it in the 90’s. Don’t need to do again. They are just so hard to walk in (clomp, clomp, clomp) and I felt like an old English king every time I wore them.

You must try the Smitten Kitchen pizza dough recipe (she calls it “lazy pizza dough” – https://smittenkitchen.com/2013/10/lazy-pizza-dough-favorite-margarita-pizza/). It’s the BEST. I have tried so many dough recipes online, and a lot are fine, but none are ever as good as professional pizza places… until hers. It’s perfect. I’ve even made it with wheat flour, and it’s still good. You have to make it the night before, but it takes about 3 minutes and is so easy. Bonus tip: I like a thicker pizza crust, so instead of using her recipe for two pizzas, I use it for one (or one and a half).

How are you curling your hair like that? It looks so cute but also pretty simple to do. I love following your blog!

You know, I love Fall as well, and although Summer is technically not over yet your post has made me look forward to enjoying our Fall. It is also nice to find out you are a Christian(born again I hope) as I just had my 37th spiritual birthday on the 29th of August. Looking forward to more of your blog, by the way I must have missed one, because not sure what the story is about detoxing…Darlene

You should try pioneer woman’s bbq chicken pizza. It’s a family favorite and the crust is amazing! http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/cpks-bbq-chicken-pizza/

My mom makes ah-mazing homemade pizza, but her secret is buying a ball of fresh pizza dough from a local bakery 😉 She still rolls it out & makes all the toppings and bakes it herself. My favourite is caramelized onions & mozzarella, so yummy!

Absolutely loving the mule trend – whether with a heel or not. I find it so sleek and polished (and comfortable) and cannot wait to carry the trend into fall. Especially since I live in VA and it is rather warm in fall – this is a nice option to keep my feet a little cooler than ankle boots!
