A funny Luke story

Cold Shoulder Casual

In the very beginning of potty training David, I would offer him a reward if he succeeded in any of the newly required “tasks” of being out of diapers. And my boy has a sweet tooth like his mama, so chocolate chips were a great motivator. He doesn’t care about new toys, but he does care about sweet treats.

Luke (pictured above), whom we wereย not potty training at this same time, is always around and wanting to be involved in whatever his big brother is doing, and he was picking up on things that I hadn’t even realized.

When it was time to use the bathroom, I would get David all set up and then ask him if he wanted any privacy. He always said he did, so I would gesture to Luke to get out of the bathroom, and we’d go wait for David to be finished.

In the meantime, I would go acquire 2 chocolate chips for David’s reward if he had success!

Sometime after doing this a few times, Luke would start trailing me around the kitchen like he usually does and see the large clear canister of chocolate chips sitting on the counter. And he would say, “pry-see mama” and look at me with longing eyes.

I didn’t understand what he was trying to say and would just reply to him by saying, “Lukie, ‘privacy’ isn’t food. What are you trying to say?” and he’d just continue to say “pry-see” until he realized I was not understanding him.

This only happened in the kitchen.

And one day, the lightbulb flicked on in my brain and I happened to look in the direction he was looking in while he was asking me for “pry-see” again. Everything suddenly made sense and I scooped Luke up and laughed so hard.

He thought chocolate chips were called “privacy” because I would ask David if he wanted some privacy while he was in the potty, and then go acquire chocolate chips for his treat!

Of COURSE Luke thought chocolate chips were called privacy, that makes total sense-it is a completely literal thing for a kid to think!

So I explained to him how they were actually called chocolate chips and that privacy is when we leave David alone! It took no time for him to figure out the actual name and start to call them “chocolate chips” when he asked for them.

But every once in awhile, I’ll be in the kitchen and he’ll come in looking as sweet as ever and ask for some “pry-see” with a sly smile. He’s at an age where he understands how to make me laugh, and he loves to make me laugh.

The whole thing was so funny and innocent toย me, I just had to share it here!

I love it! ๐Ÿ™‚ We started potty training my son last weekend. I was Googling advice and found the book “Oh Crap” by Jamie Glowacki to be super helpful. I wish I would’ve read it sooner, but either way it is helpful. Good luck!

That is too cute! My mom loves to tell the story of my older sister as a 2-3 year old (she’s 43 now.) She would call sandwiches “funch.” My mom would prompt her, “sand” (repeat sand) “wich” (repeat wich), “sandwich” — her reply was always “FUNCH!” lol…

Aw that is so precious! I LOVE when something finally clicks like that with my kiddos. I have 3 boys, pregnant with my fourth, and my current youngest is only a couple days older than Luke!

I’m unable to find your comment on eyebrow pencil with wax that you mention the other day, it was a drug store brand

OMG this story popped in my head today, and when I did a simple search for “privacy” on your search bar I was glad the story popped up on here so I could read it again and get a giggle. It’s hard to believe how much older the kids are now and how long I have been following and enjoying your journey through your various social media channels. This story is just the cutest !!
