Holiday Hair Tutorial, CrissCross Braided Pony

Winter Shoe Wardrobe + A Cute Knee-High Boot!

Okay, it’s time for the last holiday hair tutorial! Before I started Nicole’s hair, I was discussing with the other women at this shoot how braids just disappear in dark hair. Dark hair doesn’t show the intricacies that blonde or lighter hair does, and we were lamenting about spending time on detailed styles that just get lost in photographs!

But I wanted to take on the challenge with Nicole, who has rich, dark brown colored hair. And the trick is to focus on a single braid, and stretch it out so it’s nice and big!

I started with Nicole’s hair in soft curls.View More: http://jordanmaunder.pass.us/small-things

Then, from the right side, I started doing a dutch braid, directing the braid to the back of her head.

Secure it with an elastic and then stretch the braid out from the bottom up.

With the hair remaining in front of the ears, criss cross it backwards and pin in place on either side of the braid.

From here, you can leave it down and just wrap a bit of hair around the clear elastic, or finish with a loose pony like I did.

This is such a simple updo, and I love the surprise of the braid when you see it from the back!

Kinda funny – I can dutch braid my own hair, but not other people’s. I can french braid other people’s hair, but I can’t french braid my own. My hands and brain refuse to coordinate. This is very pretty, and I can do it… on me 😉 lol.

Yes, I get frustrated about the lack of beauty bloggers who have dark hair, but I guess I get it. I mean, you just can’t see hair styles as well. Quick tip: on brunette hair, I find that black elastics disappear much better than clear ones. 🙂 Keep on sharing brunette hairstyles – I love seeing them!!

Love your work Kate! As a brunette myself its nice to see a style on dark hair. I find that on dark hair any teasing/texture just shows up as messy and unkempt, at least for me. Would love to hear any tips you might have to combat that 🙂

When doing non-video hair tutorials, it would be very helpful to have photos of a side and front view in addition to a back view. So three photos per step. Thanks for sharing!

Ahhh! Thanks for sharing about brunette hair. Yes! I’ve complained to friends about how my braids visually seem to disappear and you said the same thing here.
