A Holiday Hair Tutorial, The Triple Braid

next
Gift Guide: Tech Stuff

It’s time for my second holiday hairstyle tutorial! If you feel like you are “all thumbs” when it comes to doing your hair, I strongly suggest trying this style. It takes a few minutes of prep, but then all that’s required are a few braids and pins.

You can certainly create this style on straight hair as the majority of the hair will be braided anyway. If you do that, I suggest curling the front sections just to give them a little bend for help later on when you are pinning those away from your face.

Let’s get started!

The first section will be a crown/halo section. Press your thumbs against your head, and draw a halo around the very top of your head. Section it off with a duckbill clip.

Next, divide the hair behind the ears in half, and pull into two ponytails with clear elastics.

Braid each of the ponytails.

Let down the top halo section that you clipped off first, give it one twist, then pin in place wherever your fingers are holding the hair.

Then braid that section, making very sure that you aren’t pulling too hard and loosening up the pins!

After you have 3 braids completed, begin winding them up and pinning against your hair. There’s no rhyme or reason on how to twist or wind these in, you don’t want to stack them or make it look too obvious that you have just pinned braids against your head. I like to work in circular motions, stretching the braid as I go, and creating a round updo.

Then with the hair that remains in front, loosely hold with your hand, direct it back toward the braids, and pin it discreetly under or next to the updo.View More: http://jordanmaunder.pass.us/small-things

The final result is a polished updo that won’t budge. You may find that you don’t need a great deal of hairspray to finish this style, thanks to the braiding and pins, so you may even be able to wear your hair down in playful waves the day after your party!

This updo works great for adding a few hair extensions for those of us with less than thick hair. Thanks for the inspiration.

This looks absolutely stunning on you! So much more easier than it looks. Ah, I wish my hair wasn’t shoulder length at the moment x

Thanks for the great tutorial Kate. I was wondering if your next video could show several different ways to wear your hair under winter hats. I have lots of curly hair that gets smushed down and hat-hair-esque when I have to keep warm under a beanie or knit cap.

I always have trouble getting pins to stay! I have fine textured hair, so maybe that’s it??
