2 Bold Lipsticks to Spice Up Your Lips

girlsnight

I love date night, don’t get me wrong, but I also LOVE girls night. More often than not my girls nights are spent at a friends’ home or my house. We all seem to like to cook or bake, so it’s fun to get together, bring a dish, and just talk. In case we ever plan a fun evening out I now know what hair and makeup I’ll do now!

vdaygirlsnight-1-2

vdaygirlsnight-6-2

I kept the eye very simple and just added a tiny section of false lashes to the outer corner. That was enough to add some playfulness and definition, without looking too dramatic with a full set of falsies.

The lipstick is HOT pink and I’m in love with it. I think I’m finally craving some color, and saturated color at that, now that winter is over in my mind.

Products used for makeup: Mac Paintpot in Soft Ochre, Covergirl Trunaked Nudes palette, Laura Mercier Candleglow Luminous Foundation with the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush, Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer in shade 1, Benefit Roller Lash, Artemes false lashes, Hourglass Arch eyebrow pencil in platinum blonde, Tartist contour palette, Hourglass Strobing powder in Brilliant, Pixi Eye Bright Liner, Smashbox Panorama Pink lipstick

vdaygirlsnight-4-2

I created a super fast (under 3 minute) tutorial to show how I did my hair! If you want to see slowed down versions of how to get this look, watch this and this!

It’s cute but I thought on periscope you talked about doing a sassy bold look for GNO and a more subdued look for date night…I don’t think it gets more basic than this. And that lip color is far from hot pink! I was hopping for a really fun look from you. I think you’ve been doing great but things seem so redundant. Truth be told, all the “different” looks you’ve been posting with undone waves, curls etc. all look the same as do a lot of your make up looks. You have such pretty hair! I know you’re in a season of life now as I am too but for the sake of the blog you should switch it up every now and again with something other than waves, messy buns and braids. I know I’d love some fresh new mom looks for when I am able to sneak away from the kiddos!!

Reply
Kate says · 02.05.16

I guess it depends on what you consider basic, right? This may totally be basic for some, but false lashes and a pink lipstick are a fun spin on my basic.

Reply
Julie says · 02.05.16

No way! I follow you religiously and this is pretty basic even for you!! And those aren’t full false eyelashes Kate, just a small embellishment. You can’t seriously tell me that this is a spin on a normal look for you…

Reply
Kate says · 02.05.16

I’m not sure what to tell you Julie! I never wear false lashes (Even at the outer corners) and I wanted to try the very basic eye paired with a bright pink lip (which, to me, it quite bright in real life). Seems like we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one! Pinterest has so many great tutorials if you are looking for something particularly smokey and dramatic!

Reply
Julie says · 02.05.16

Also, I’ve seen you do a true hot pink review recently and it looked great on you. THAT is a bold hot pink lip. We can certainly disagree and I can certainly find other bloggers and tutorials who do a more dramatic look, I’m just wondering why you would bother doing a periscope asking for people’s opinions and suggestions if you’re just going to phone it in and do something basic…again. It was a waste of my time apparently…

Kate says · 02.05.16

Julie, I am glad we were able to discuss our opinions in the comments this morning but this last comment from you is rude and contributes nothing constructive to the conversation. At this point I feel like you are intentionally trying to provoke me. I’m no longer going to participate.

Julie says · 02.05.16

Not rude Kate, just honest.

Julie says · 02.05.16

This was meant to be a “Gal-entine’s Day” look as per your periscope…I just find it hard to believe that this would be your go to look for what sounds like a special and fun night out as it doesn’t seem that different than a normal day for you…I’m just disappointed.

Reply
Elle says · 02.05.16

Julie,
I think she gets your point. It seems after all of your responses, your only goal here is to get a rise out of her. You made your point from the start.. if you don’t like what she is putting out there then go to another blog or hop on pinterest.

Kate- This look is great and as always I loved your tutorial! I have been following you for years on here and you have never disappointed!

Melissa says · 02.05.16

Kate,

She has a valid point. This could be a tutorial for a no make up look. This is not fun at all.

Please learn to take constructive criticism for what it is. All you needed to say is that you will work on posting a more upbeat make up tutorial in the very near future.

Reply
Julie says · 02.06.16

I know a lot of people think I’m trying to get a rise out of Kate. That wasn’t my intention at all. I just got frustrated when her response back to my comment was that this was a “spin on her normal look”. That’s not true at all and anyone who follows her knows that this is pretty basic for her, false eyelashes or not. Had she not done a 20 minute periscope asking for our opinions and coming to the conclusion that she was going to do a fun bold look for gal-entine’s day and a subdued/softer look for valentines date night based on our feedback, then I wouldn’t have thought anything of it, because the look is cute! I just feel like I wasted my time watching that periscope and offering feedback. Why ask for our collective opinions if you’re just going to do what you want in the end? That’s where my frustration came in. Don’t engage with your readers if you just want to do your own thing. It’s perfectly fine, just don’t do the periscope thing then…

I love what she puts out, that’s why I read, but it’s the repeated soft waves tutorials, messy buns and now this for what was supposed to be a fun BOLD look for a night out with the girls and it just feels redundant. Valentine’s Day is such a fun day whether you spend it out with friends or with a significant other…as a beauty blogger, is this truly a good post as a Valentines Day look? In my opinion, NO. It looks too similar to an every day post for her and that left me so disappointed as I expected so much more from my favorite blogger! I was certainly not trying to push buttons for the sake of pushing buttons…had she responded to my comment with, “I know I mentioned doing a more fun/bold look on periscope but this look came to me and I decided to go in a different direction”, I would have said nothing back, but she didn’t and you all read the exchange and so is life…

Anywho…the dead horse has been beaten enough. Happy Saturday all whether you agree or not 🙂

If your looking for fresh new mom looks, you can add any variation to this look. Red lips in place of pink, purple eyeshadows instead of browns, full lashes instead of halves. Do what you want with the look, be as adventurous as you want. This is what she wanted to do and was generous enough to upload it.

Reply
Sarah says · 02.05.16

I truly enjoy your tutorials, thanks for posting! I love the loose waves and have incorporated this look into my life, but I’ve got a maintenance question for you … I do yoga during my lunch hour at work, and afterward, my curls are pretty much non-existent. Short of bringing a curling iron to work and re-doing it, do you have any tips on how to keeping them in place? For reference, I have a very long bob (vlob?) and my hair is thicker and heavy. Maybe at some point you could do a “mid-day maintenance refresher” tutorial?

Reply
Kate says · 02.05.16

vlob–haha! That’s a good question, gives me something to think about! I’ll work on that!

Reply
Angie says · 02.05.16

Love this idea! I work out in the middle of my day on my lunch break as well, and I’m usually a mess afterward. I feel good, but look crappy… LOL

Kate, I have to agree with you from the previous rude comment! I thought it was such a lovely look. Simple eye and a bold lip what do people want? You to be plastered with makeup? I think you did a great job and it is perfect for a GNO! If people don’t like it they don’t have to watch & leave rude comments! You are beautiful!!

Reply
Amanda says · 02.05.16

I also agree. It is fine to agree to disagree but to keep going that is uncalled for. Kate I think you handled it very gracefully. For someone who doesn’t wear bold make up on a daily basis I do think the makeup look was bolder. Its amazing what a brighter bolder lipcolor can do for the whole look. Loved the video 🙂

Lindsay says · 02.05.16

Kate I am loving your tutorials. As a momma of a little girl Luke’s age, I really appreciate how practical and beautiful your tutorials are. It is so easy to throw your hair up in the mornings and call it a day, but you have inspired me to wake up a little earlier in the mornings and make myself feel a little bit more put together. Keep doing what you are doing.

Reply
Mark says · 02.05.16

The make up is great. I like the false eye lashes, no over kill just suites you. The half trend is a good idea and there is no over doing it. You should have had one photo with the Red Smashbox lipstick.

Hi Kate!! Just wanted to say I love these tutorials.. And all the braids and different techniques you do to your hair make me wish I didn’t make the chop! But I guess being able to blow dry my hair in less than 10 minutes has its perks? For special occasions, I probably do go a *bit* over the top on my makeup.. so thanks for showing that simple (with a kick) can be pretty special for a day/night out as well! Still trying to figure out what is wrong with being “basic”….

Reply
Amy says · 02.05.16

Love this look! A little edgy and fun for GNO. Don’t let rude commenters get you down. I think most of your followers will agree that this is a fun tutorial and totally accessible for those of us wanting to change things up without going overboard! Have a great weekend!

Kate,

I never post comments to your posts but follow religiously and check every morning for updates. I agree with you in regards to Julie. She was just trying to provoke you and I commend you for not going to her level. If this is the look you want for YOUR girls night out then who are we to say anything different. I love your posts and tutorials. False lashes are definitely not a normal routine for you or most women! Keep it up you are doing a great job!

Reply
Rosa says · 02.05.16

I absolutely love these tutorials! But as someone who visits your blog every morning, it is not surprising that I would love yours.

Both your makeup and hair are so lovely, and I am going to try this look next time my girls and I have our Girls’ Night Out!

False eyelashes are new to me, and I think it is a brilliant idea to cut them into smaller pieces before putting them on. That way I can avoid looking like I have done a little too much!

As other people mentioned, keep doing what you are doing! You are so gorgeous and so cool!

Love love love!!!! I love the deeper part you did on your hair paired with the braid… so fun!!

I will be honest – I wear false lashes almost every day.. Not dramatic ones, but the ones you can buy that look really natural. I guess I’ve just gotten used to them and I feel like my eyes are naked without them.. lol. That being said – Your take on splitting them and putting them on just the corners is incredibly cute and flirty. I will most definitely be trying this look – well, if I can get up the nerve for a hot pink lipstick.. 😉

Hi Kate, I rarely post comments but follow you every day. After reading the rude comments above I just wanted to let you know how much I adore you and your blog. I have been a fan of make-up and skincare for as long as I can remember but I continue to learn new techniques and about new products from you – so please keep doing what you are doing! Regarding skincare, have you thought about adding some steps of the Korean beauty routine (http://sokoglam.com/pages/theroutine) into your normal routine? I’m about 7 months into my second pregnancy and before I started my skin never looked worse. After my first pregnancy I had terrible hormonal breakouts and a lot of dark spots and scarring. During this pregnancy it has only gotten worse. I added a few new steps and products after researching the Korean beauty routine and within just a few weeks I have noticed a big difference. I still have a long way to go, but I do think it seems to be helping me. Anyway, just thought I would mention it. I’m sure if you decide to try it your readers would love to hear about it!

I have been following your blog for a couple years now, but have never left a comment…I REALLY ENJOY all the different “looks” you create! I am a former hair stylist turned stay athome mom to a 4 1/2 yr old, 3yr old and three step-children (ages10, 12 &15) I used to live and breathe anything that had to do with hair and makeup. ..now I live and breathe motherhood while wearing some variation of yoga/stretch pants and a messy bun EVERY.DAY. I used to interact with so many people who took turns sitting in my chair each day and now I get excited when I have the opportunity to have a conversation with someone over the age of 15, lol! Anyway, during this season of life i sometimes struggle to get out of my mom wardrobe and have a style….sometimes im not sure i even know what my style IS anymore! Your blog has always inspired me and given me new ideas to try! I love your style and personality and feel like you are relatable 🙂 i loved this post and the idea of getting glammed up to go out with girlfriends and I love the whole look! I know that a cute side braid and fun lip color would not get the proper appreciation from my husband as it would my girlfriends!! Thanks for putting these tutorials together for your readers. It is a joy to follow your blog 🙂

Blessings!

Why can’t you spend some time and effort doing a hair and make-up look.? Not everything has to take 2 minutes. I’m getting tired of this no-make-up look and messy hair.

Reply
J.Fern says · 02.29.16

The look she created can be added to for personal preference. If you don’t like a pink lip, do red. If you want more curls, it doesn’t take much of an imagination to add them. If you want purple eyeshadow and more dramatic lashes. Add them. She was creating a tutorial of what she wanted to look like, and it was generous for her to upload for the public.

I love this look! I have a very similar skin tone to you and I feel like that lip color is a need in my life. Also, can we talk about that highlighter!? Gorgeous! If we can request a particular hair tutorial, I was wondering if you could show us how to do a top knot half up style. I see those are really popular right now but I’m not sure how to execute it. Love that braid you did! Thanks Kate!

Reply
Rachel says · 02.08.16

I don’t think Julie’s comments were rude. She simply stated that Kate asked for suggestions on periscope, then produced something that is basically the same look she always does. I will say, the lip stick was much more vibrant in the video and with the black and white shirt. The editing of the photos for the blog post are too yellow and really soften the look. The grey sleeveless top in the dead of winter add to the strangeness of it all. The black and white striped top was much cuter and fit the look.

As for the breakouts, have you considered giving your face a break. You’re putting on a considerable amount of make up on most of your videos, not sure what you do at home on a day to day basis, but even before you breakout I always cringe at the amount of foundation, then corrector and concealer.

I love your tutorials and this was fantastic as well. I know you can’t please everyone of your readers and you are great at taking criticism (the comments I have read were not constructive for which I left that word out). I’m irritated for you that people have to get upset because we have a different definition of pink, dramatic looks, and “basic”. I personally enjoy multiple videos of duplicated curls, braids, or makeup because I believe it helps those who are beginners get a continued lesson. And to be honest, it’s impossible not to replicate or repeat a past makeup look or hairstyle. For the sake of rambling I will stop but I think others need to realize what one may consider “dramatic” can vary person to person. Keep up the great work, I love your tutorials. Oh yeah, I have short hair, I don’t find it necessary to complain none of her videos may work with my hair length but you don’t hear me complaining about something so silly.

I love this look! The reason I come to this blog, aside from the amazing hair tutorials, is to see makeup done by someone who isn’t a makeup artist. I find the youtube videos of total face transformations to be both compelling and terrifying, not to mention impractical for normal days or budgets. Your looks are always things that can be recreated and that, to me, is reason enough to come back again and again.

Hi Kate! Love your tutorial, this is a great one for me because I rarely use a bright lip or lipstick in general, so it would be a fun one to try! I know you’ve mentioned your skin being mad at you lately. I tried doing a homemade mask, you put four uncoated aspirin in a small bowl with a few drops of water, let it sit a few minutes. Add about one to two teaspoons of raw honey, mix it up and spread it in your face. Let it sit for fifteen minutes and then let a warm rag sit on your a few minutes befor rinsing the mask off . It’s done wonders for me! I also tried the oil cleansing method and mixed up my own oils, it takes a while for skin to adjust and detox but that has helped my skin so much!

Thank you for all your amazing tutorials!!!
