I was planning on writing a candid post about how stressful and crazy the 5 hour road trip with a 3 month old and 17 month old was today.

But, with much shock I’m here to say that the road trip was easy.

A breeze actually.

At one point I was convinced that I was actually in a dream and there is no way it could have gone so smoothly.

We left in the morning right before Luke’s second nap, and both boys fell asleep almost instantly. David typically doesn’t take a morning nap unless he’s in the car so I was happy that he ended up falling asleep easily!
We stopped for lunch at Chick fil A around 11:30, let David stretch his legs and play for about an hour while we ate.

Then we hopped back in the car and Luke fell asleep within 10 minutes, and David was out cold in about 30 minutes.

And they both slept basically the entire rest of the trip.

IT WAS TRULY SHOCKING. Historically Luke hates the car seat and cries quite a bit, and David gets tired of being strapped down after awhile.

I think the key factor during this drive, as opposed to driving around town, is that there were no stops or turning. It was just I-95 the entire way.

Anyway, we’ve been here for a few days and have had so much fun already. The boys have done pretty good napping and sleeping in a new place, and we’ve had full and exciting days so far. We took them both to the beach on Tuesday morning, and David had a smile plastered across his face the entire time.

It’s so fun to see David take in a whole new place, and I can’t wait until Luke is old enough to enjoy it with him!

totally agree with your logic about the highway being better for sleeping than driving around town. also, totally an answer to prayer. so happy to hear things went well for you and I hope you guys have a great time for the rest of your vacation!

Yes!! Yay for a successful road trip! Stop signs/ stop lights are the bane of this traveling Momma’s existence! We can always make it the 2:30 hours almost to my parents house but we hit the small town just before and the dreaded 4-way stop and its all over! Ha ha

I think the only piece of mothering advice I ever tell people is to just have low expectations when going into rough situations like that (traveling, crazy long days, etc.). That way, you’re always pleasantly surprised if things go well and you’re prepared when things go super bad. Glad you had some peace in the car with your hubby!

YAY! So glad you had a great easy trip! We took my daughter to the beach for the first time when she was 11 weeks old and she HATED the car seat too! I spent the entire 7 -8 hours car trip rocking her car seat just to keep her content. WHEW! It was the longest car trip of my life!

Just thinking about taking our toddler and baby on a vacation this year and the fussing in the car made my husband and I throw that idea right out the window. But now reading this, I may try to convince him otherwise. Have lots of fun at the beach!

So glad your road trip went well! We are leaving for the Outer Banks tomorrow night but it is a 15-hr drive from Memphis. We are breaking it into 2 days so that it will be less torture for our 17-mo and I am crossing fingers our car ride goes pretty smooth!

We drove across country every year with our 3 kids and everyone thought we were crazy, but those car trips are some of our best memories. We always left in the dark and got a few hours in before they woke up, stopped and let them play somewhere in the afternoon and promised a hotel with a pool if they were good. Car rides are great husband and wife talking time too, no interruptions!

Glad the road trip went well! Let me say I LOVE your blog and look forward to your posts everyday!
Quick question, I have a 1 year old and was looking for a good baseball hat for him. The Nike hat David is wearing in this pic looks durable and also comfortable and not stiff like most baseball hats do. Where did you get it and what is it called?
Thanks,
Becca

This gives me hope! My youngest just turned 1 on Monday and also hates the car. The longest we’ve driven was 2 hours but are planning a 12 hour trip come December. I’m so anxious about it but pray for the same miracle you received!

Enjoy! We have spent every summer and most spring breaks at Hilton Head with our 2 boys, who are 22 months apart and are now 17 and 15. The beaches down that way are so quiet and family-friendly. You picked the perfect spot!

I am so glad to hear it went well! We’re taking an 8-hour trip next week with our 3-month-old car-hating daughter, I hope it goes as well as it did for you. Pray for us! 🙂

Enjoy Bluffton! Be sure to check out Cahill’s Chicken Kitchen & Market while you’re there if you have the time. The food is delicious, the market has lots of great local finds, and there’s lots of room for David to run around and play outside. There are even live chickens he can visit (don’t worry, they’re contained in a fence/cage).

This is a fantastic age to travel! My older girls are 19 months apart and when they were 2-3 months, and 22 months I would fly by myself all the time to see their daddy who was in flight school. It was amazing how much easier it was then the following year.

Could you do a how-to on your baby carrier? I have the same one, a hand-me-down from my cousin, and she raved about it. Unfortunately at this time I am not a fan. But this could be due to user error. I found it difficult to get on, bulky and hot. Your how-to’s are always very helpful and you might be able to help me love this carrier too! Thanks 🙂
