Welp, I rather enjoyed my “maternity leave” for the first 6 weeks or so of Luke’s presence here in the Bryan household.

Speaking of which, Justin and IΒ are totally aware that his name is Luke Bryan like the current popular country singer. Truthfully, I couldn’t name one Luke Bryan song if I tried, so my Luke is not named after him in any way. If we would have named Luke like Beyonce or something, I would understand if people thought he was named after a celeb.

But Beyonce was not on our short list of boy names for my second born.Β

Luke Bryan is kind of just a normal name in the first place, before the singer made it special.

Anyway, I’m here today to have a little chat about what’s been going on.

I savored my time with my mom and the boys for the month of February and a little bit of March. It was glorious. GLORIOUS. HARK THE HERALD AN. . . too far?

I even worked a little bit behind the scenes because I’m sneaky and I don’t “sit” well. I don’t really nap, and I don’t really vegetate on the couch well.

Anyway, my maternity leave is now over, and I’m slowly getting back into the swing of things around here.

And the swing of things is a little bit insane.

Posting may be a little bit light initially, but I have every intention on maintaining myΒ blog from here on out. And you may see a bit more family chat mixed in with the beauty stuff.

Because here’s the thing. Beauty is kind of taking a backseat at the moment.

Imagine a van. A Honda Oddessy if you will because those are the best and holy cow I never thought I would love a van like I do.

Beauty things used to be right up in the drivers seat. Spilling into the console, and there was even beauty in the passenger seat. The airbags of said vehicle are actually just make-up puffs.

And then I had David. And beauty slid over to the passenger seat.

And then I had Luke. And beauty got tossed into the trunk.

No, I’m kidding. It’s not that far back. But right now it’s in the optional 3rd row of seats.

Why? Well for one thing there is absolutely no time to do anything with two kids. No. Time. To. Do. Anything.

There is no time.

Secondly, I have a busy toddler that I like to play with. So that means we are outside walking around, or playing in the grass, or splashing the trickling water out of the spigot from our house. So beauty feels a little pointless some days.

I’m still not a roll out of bed kind of gal, but casual/minimal makeup + hair is dominating my life right now. And the change feels appropriate.

So the beauty content here may shift a bit. Or it may not. I’ll just have to see how I feel as time passes.

Why am I telling you all this? Because this blog started out so dang beauty heavy, and specifically hair tutorial heavy, and I want to be up front with how I anticipate the content changing as my life changes.

I love blogging and connecting with other readers so much. It’s such a fun thing in my life that is hard to imagine not being there.

So thanks, reader, for checking in from time to time, commenting, and making this whole internet thing pretty awesome. And I hope you stick around too!

Good Morning Kate,
Will absolutely stick around. Reading your blog every morning is routine for me and has been for a while now. I enjoyed the beauty/hair stuff but quite honestly I enjoy reading about your “life and family” even more. Your writing and the way you word things and interject funny stuff is entertaining and I am pretty sure there are many many others that will feel the same way. Your family is beautiful and I still hope to see a video one day of David when his Dad comes home from work to see the excitement on his face (that sounds priceless). Have a wonderful day and continue writing about anything and everything, your loyal readers will enjoy all of it.

Kate I can only speak for myself, but I have been (and my family has been) growing along with your blog, so I love the evolution!

Congrats on growing such a fantastic community and two precious boys. I’m so excited for your posts each day/week. Best of luck in all you do!

No one gets how much life changes after kids until you have kids and your life changes. I was naive as everyone else when I had my first. Now I have four, life is still crazy. It is your blog, make what you want.

Heck, I just love seeing what pretty coffee mug you’re using this morning. lol So, just keep on doing what you’re doing. There are thousands of beauty blogs out there, but only one Kate!

I love the direction you are going. Busy mom on the go is a much needed area to cover for many of us. I would love to see more quick beauty and hair tutorials because even though it may be a duh thing for some it is not for me. I love all your tutorials, but many of them I can only do for special occasions because with 2 kids I rarely have time to curl my massive amount of hair.

Hey Kate,
I’ve been reading your blog since a couple months before you posted about the difficulties of trying to become pregnant for awhile. (Which made me cry when you announced you were pregnant, aaaand my husband thought I was crazy ha) I landed on your blog for the hair tutorials and quickly realized your blog was way more than that. (And loved that!) I had my son about a month after David was born so I followed it religiously during pregnancy and baby time for any advice ha! So if anything I’m pumped to learn more about how to balance beauty and family.

Reading your blog while trying to savor a coffee durning precious nap time makes me feel a little less crazy.

Kate I so get this!! I now have a 14 month old boy and 5 week old girl and oh my gosh when was the bathroom cleaned last?? It’s scary. But so delightful all at once!! I feel so torn like neither baby is getting as much of my attention as I wish but I think every mom probably feels that way. I agree that busy mom on the go tutorials would be awesome! Streamlined hair tutorials etc. I have even learned to shower at night (gasp! I never thought I would see that day!) because there simply isn’t enough time in the morning when babies are napping to fit that in. And my vehicle is an excursion, my mom has a Toyota Sienna and those are nice too hehe but lemme tell ya what, the excursion is AWESOME. πŸ˜‰

I started following your blog due to the hair tutorials, but still pull it up every morning when I get into work (don’t tell!) to see what you have to say about ANYTHING! I have started using products that you’ve reviewed, or buying things you recommend (hello, Better Life Bags!). It’s always a good read. πŸ™‚ Plus, at some point in the near future, my hubby and I will start extending our family and I’ll have your blog to go back to and see what products are good or bad, based on your reviews, and that makes me happy. BTW, at least Luke has the same name as a very good looking country musician!

You are correct. There is no time! (I also have a toddler and a baby in the house! Woot, woot!) i really enjoy your honesty. I love your hair stuff. I can find tips galore from beauty gurus who spend hours of time getting ready and don’t have kids at home. I use their recommendations because busy moms don’t generally have time to test out all foundations and new mascaras and film reviews. Plus we all have to work our talent. Hi Kate! I love your blog and have been following for a while now. Congratulations on your two lovely boys! I currently have a one year old boy and an almost 9 months pregnant with a little girl so I’m guessing my life will be similar to yours in a week or two! I have been trying to revamp my beauty routine to something more simple. Cleanser, witch hazel and coconut oil (amazing!) are what I used morning and night, but I was wondering if you can suggest a simple make up routine. Currently I use BB Cream, blush, eye shadow and mascara. But, I also think I desperately need an under eye concealer (I’m sure you know my pain). Can you suggest some products for me? We have similar complexions and hair color. Thanks!

Your blog has helped me to step out of the depression that I had been in after losing our youngest son at 18 months old. I worked out of the house and had no reason to get dressed really. Even though I had four other children at home still, the hole that was left in my heart due to losing him was too big and I lost myself in it. There became a point where I needed to try to start living again and what started with a hairstyle on Pinterest to help with this change led me to your blog. Slowly, I got back into the land of living by taking care of me and caring about things again, even if it was something as small as trying a new product or reading about DYI projects. It helped me to get over myself, so to speak, and get out of this dark world that I created. Your blog has also helped to strengthen the bond I have with my teenage daughter since she was starting to become aware of her looks, etc. When I first read about you tossing beauty to the third row of your van, my first thought was that beauty doesn’t have to be in products. Your best beauty product that you show is the love you share for your family. This beauty takes all three rows! Hanging out with David reminds me of the time that it was just me and my oldest son and how much fun we had. This time goes by so fast! One night, I went to bed after snuggling with him and reading him books and when I woke up, he was 20! I thank you for your blog! It has helped me to emerge and see the beauty of life again.

I know you have straighter hair that you curl, but anything that you could advise for us naturally wavy/curly girls would be great too. I know you can’t speak from personal experience on those, but any help or tutorials (using someone else maybe?) would be great. Just not prioritizing straightened my hair with 2 little girls and the coming humidity…..

Family, beauty, mini-vans… this seems to be the life! I enjoy EVERY post you do. I’m a young mother of a 2-year old girl and every day at 7am when I receive the daily email regarding your blog, I have to pause and “catch up” with you haha! I was, of course, intrigued with all the beauty tutorials and hair blogs at first and once I started following you, I discovered we have a lot more in common in relation to family. I do not have a 2nd child (although we have been trying for quite sometime), but I take your posts and keep them for a rainy day, for when the day comes and I’ll be in your shoes with a toddler and infant.

Your beauty posts inspire me to find the inner-woman in me, since I hardly buy makeup. See my mother wasn’t around to teach me a thing or two about makeup and hair. I continue to learn daily how to apply makeup or fix my hair. And your tutorials help me embrace my new-found femininity!!

So thank you Kate! And no matter what you post, I’ll read it. God Bless your adorable family!

Ps. I am obsessed with the country singer, Luke Bryan, but never put the two together until you said it lol! Either way, it’s bold πŸ™‚

It seemed appropriate.

BTW, your boys are adorable!

I enjoy your blog, I too began reading your blog every day after someone on another blog posted your “bouncy curled under” tutorial. AND I was hooked! My son and stepdaughter are grown so I am older than most of your followers but I enjoy reading about your growing family and your location makes me feel more connected with my family that also lives in NC. I also enjoy going back and watching your makeup and hair tutorials because it seems like each time I do I find some small detail that I missed or had forgotten about. So please don’t feel bad because there is not a “new” tutorial every week I find something new almost every day. P.S. my family absolutely loves your pizza dip recipe.

I love that your blog has been changing to incorporate your family. That’s how life goes! I was first attracted by your beauty and hair posts but I stayed for your personality and how you gracefully go though life. I love reading about a normal everyday loving family from someone and wonderful and full of life as you. I will absolutely be sticking around to read more tips, tricks and stories you have to give about anything from beauty to family to just life! I love you and you do you!!!

second. yay family talk! all to say, i’m glad i found your blog (a couple months ago) and i don’t mind the shape-shifting one bit!

Kate,
I read your blog for about 3/4 years now (no idea when I started). I do love the beauty stuff, but here’s the trick: although I’m not married or a mother, I really enjoy your maternity/baby posts. I never ever said “ah, it’s a family thing, I won’t read it”. I’m pretty sure that’s how your reader base thinks too. What I am saying is: we are all changing and the fact that you naturally introduced the changes in your life into the blog makes your blog very interesting. Do not worry, we’ll be here πŸ™‚

I’m looking forward to the changes! Maybe because I’m also a new mom of 2 boys. I have a busy 2 1/2 year old and a newborn! Life is definitely a little crazy and I totally agree about the time shortage. Taking a shower is a total luxury at the moment… Although I’m covered in spit up and other baby related liquids shortly after getting out of the shower…

I’d write more here about your awesome blog, but I’m currently typing with one hand as I hold my sleeping 3 week old baby boy in the other arm. And I’m not wearing make-up and have yet to brush my hair, so beauty has obviously taken a backseat for me as well! πŸ™‚

I too am I mother of 2… and I remember the exact. same. transition. Don’t be too hard or expect too much from yourself. My kids are now almost 9 and 5 and I’m barely starting to feel like a human again! LOL Seriously though, this is a completely overwhelming, time consuming and absolutely exhausting phase of motherhood. It is also so joyous and rewarding. I LOVE minimal makeup and hair ideas for busy working mothers, love your blog!

I am a newer reader here and first time commenter. I have to say I love how content you look in this picture with Luke. The pictures of my newborn sons sleeping on my chest are some of my favorites from that time. Personally I love the direction of the new blog and appreciate the casual/dressed down make up tips and hair ideas, there are a million tutorials out there on how to do going out make up but very few on how to lightly enhance your looks for day to day. And you are right chasing a toddler and caring for a newborn leaves very little time for Momma, my little ones are 22 months apart.

When you do more beauty tutorials I would love to see one on wearing lipstick. I love how you tend to do a bold lip and would love to try that out myself, but I am nervous about picking which products to try and what colors would work. Plus I always seem to end up with patchy color.

Thank you so much for this post. I’m in a similar boat. I have a toddler and baby and a small business that I started 1 year after my first was born. I loved it and did well. But now with my second baby in the mix my business has really been ignored because there is no time. I feel all the shoulds: I should still be committed to my business, I should hire babysitting so I can work, I should be a modern woman and balance both well. But at this season in my life, my heart is not in it. After reading this post I sigh a breath of relief that I’m not alone and that it’s OK if I’m not doing it all and it’s OK if I don’t want to do it all. It’s OK to take the time to enjoy my kids. My business will still be there when I’m ready. Thank you for this gift!

I’m most definitely sticking around! Your blog is, hands down, my all-time favorite. It’s the only one I read religiously. I check it more than once a day…that’s how much I love it. I think it’s because we’re in a similar place in life, with our families, but also because you teach me so much and show me the way to so many wonderful products and designers (The Dotted Poppy Shop and Elisabeth Ashlie, anyone??). I also recommend your blog to everyone…constantly…including my hairdresser last weekend. Keep on doing what you’re doing….it’s working!!

I’ve been reading since you were pregnant with David and I went all the way back in the archives to get the earlier stuff just to catch up when I first found you. I have fallen in love with you and your family. So while I came to the blog for hair tips (because God knows I’m going through a funk and could really use some beauty advice to spruce myself up and give me some confidence right now)… I will stay for YOU and your family and the little rays of beauty sunshine that come down from time to time. I will no doubt enjoy all of it. Just know, that when you do post a beauty tip here or there, you’re helping all the mommies in the world get some inspiration to look and feel better and boost their confidence! You are doing a great thing with this blog. πŸ™‚

Don’t be sad when they do grow up- having two grown boys is just as much fun! Now we discuss all sorts of world things instead of Legos and Pokemon. I think because I’ve always had my own hobbies in addition to being their mom, they haven’t been smothered by me and thus we have stayed close. So keep up your interests in the seconds you have and enjoy your babies! Thank you!

It made me laugh about Luke’s name. We named our daughter Lily Collins(which is a 20 something actress)and I have a friend that named her son Will Smith. I just was not going to “not” choose a name based on someone famous. Who knows where they are going to be in 20 years. I love your blog and I am happy for the transition. I will still be reading!

Not that I don’t love your hair and beauty posts but so happy to hear about the possibility of a little more family/baby stuff!! I used to come here for the beauty, then was really excited by the pregnancy posts, then was even more excited about David posts, and that led to being over the moon with your second pregnancy and Luke posts (had my first in November this past year so as your life shifted to family mine had been headed that direction hoping for my own pregnancy). Now I honestly skim the beauty posts but eat up the baby ones! Keep ’em coming, and I have van envy, if only I could have an oddessy!

I found your blog while looking for hair tutorials. I absolutely love your style and the tutorials. It makes sense that your blog will change as your life does, but as a single girl surrounded by married friends with kids, I’m sad to see it become more child-focused and less beauty-focused. I’ll still check in from time to time, but I’m now back to my search for blogs that are beauty focused and relate-able to my life. Congratulations on your wonderful family. Personally, I love the new direction.

And as a stay at home mom, I relish the idea that you can give quick tutorials for us mom’s that might be in the middle of chasing a 3 year old! I know looking nice isn’t always a priority when I’m home with my boy all day, but sometimes I just need makeup to feel like a human.

I am a fan of your blog and am excited about the new direction it’s heading in. I first came across this sight when my son was a baby. I love the tutorials and felt the beauty content helped me keep up to date on trends since I didn’t have time to do that myself as a new mom. Now that you’re a mother I have enjoyed watching you take on a new perspective on life, because motherhood changes everything. I still like a look put together, and in my dream life would like to have all the time in the world to do my hair and make up. But I now have had 3 kids in 4 years and with each baby, priorities change and beauty takes a back seat. Like if I had to choose between extra sleep or curling my hair I choose sleep, or playing with kids, or going for a run. I do look forward to any simplified beauty routines you may have and I think you will find you will be tapping into a much needed area of beauty info for many moms. It is a wonderful transition going from complicated over done beauty to simple beauty.

I started reading your posts during a really depressing time in my life when I was chronically ill and unable to take care of my daughter on my own. I sort of lost myself in my pain and felt really detached from life and the Lord. Reading your blog got me to start taking care of myself again. I would try out a new product or attempt a hair style. It helped to do every day things that I could do when there was so much that I couldn’t do. I have a five year old and I remember well the all consuming days of having a newborn who grew into a toddler, etc. In fact, I would say that it’s just now getting easier although it was always fun and special. We are trying for another one right now and I enjoy hearing about your littles and the fun stories you share. I’ll be reading always, hair, make up family… It’s all fun to share a little part of my day with you!

Good for you!! Priorities change when children enter our lives. I have 3 young boys(5 year old twins and a 3 year old) and while I love to try to look my best, sometimes my best is a quick messy bun and swipe of mascara. I personally love the direction the blog is going! As a full time physician and a first-time mom-to-be in August, I love reading about other people balance family and work. It’s one thing I am really nervous about once the baby is born. While I dream of having perfectly styled hair during the week, and wish I could spend hours in sephora, in reality I’m happy I had time to blow dry my hair in the morning. so for me, the minimalist look posts are the best!

Kudos to you Kate!
I haven’t been on your blog in some time (You had baby #2?! Last time I was here you had just had #1!) but I have to tell you that I discovered your blog when I was on the OTHER side of the mommy thing.
As in, AFTER I had my 3 kids and I finally (FINALLY!) put away the maternity/nursing wear and decided it was time to actually buy new, non-frumpy clothes; and that I could take an extra 20 minutes to do my hair sometimes. Your blog inspired me to get over the rut of the pony tail, and also helped me believe I could actually do something beautiful with my hair without 1. a ton of time 2. a ton of accessories 3. a ton of work.
So thanks Kate! Enjoy your boys! As I’m sure you’re aware of by now, it goes so quickly! Thanks for sharing the journey with us!
