Fifteen

next
Happy
Since becoming a mom, I now have 15 new very close friends.

They are kinda clingy.

Okay, really clingy.

Weirdly enough, they all share the same name.

And that is “pounds”.

15 pounds. Hanging on for dear life, the little punks.
When I was nursing I just ate everything in sight (aka Snappers), but now I don’t have the luxury of burning 1 million calories as I sit on a chair. It’s a crying shame, isn’t it?

Now listen up.

I know my body isn’t going to look the same as it did pre-pregnancy. I carried a stinking human inside of me. And he’s seriously chunky and cute. <—that is unnecessary but I just needed to say it.

But here’s the deal.

I don’t feel strong. I can tell I’m not in “healthy shape”. I want to feel confident, strong, and healthy. I’d also love to see an ab or two, but let’s not get carried away.

I’ve had no trouble finding time to shower and get ready, but I have had trouble finding time to work out. It’s simply a priority issue. I’d rather shower and get ready for the day in the morning, instead of waiting until an afternoon nap to finally shower. It’s mental for me. I’m more productive that way.

I love working out at a gym, but I didn’t want to go in the evening because that was precious time with Justin.

So I bought T-25 in hopes that a quick home workout would be the trick.

I was excited about it. I couldn’t wait to see my “after” shot and just watch the weight fall off. I made a dramatic change in my diet (Snappers were replaced with Rice Cakes) and did T-25 for two weeks.

Then I woke up one morning with a pinched nerve in my neck, so I was out for a week.

And I was pretty happy that I didn’t have to get up and do a bunch of jumping around at 6:00am. The thing about doing “cardio” in front of your TV is you really only have a few options. Run in place or do jumping jacks. And there’s a lot of that in T-25.

It’s not bad, it just not my thang. I’m motivated more by competition than working out alone.

I’d see my couch out of the corner of my eye and think, “Hm, that looks appealing. I’ve done 500 jumping jacks today already. . . it’s time to sit.”

My husband is totally self-motivated. He would argue that it’s a choice, and I would argue that it’s how you are wired. He did P90X last year and completely changed his body. And other than looking ripped, he felt healthy and strong. He was in the best shape of his life.
He can work out and push himself to the limit by simply having the goal of health and a strong body in his mind. I need to see other people pushing it and try to keep up with them in order to push it myself.

So, T-25 is over. I think it’s a great work out, and absolutely do-able in that it’s 20 minutes a day. It’s just a little too much jumping (my feet would fall asleep half way through the work out from all the pressure on the balls of my feet!) and I didn’t feel motived by watching Shawn on the screen.
So, then I took a Pure Barre class when I was home a few weeks ago. And I loved it. I was sore for days and felt fantastic. It motivated me and inspired me to keep going to get in shape.

Unfortunately, the only way I could swing regular Barre classes would be in the evening and I didn’t want to miss evenings with Justin. So I contemplated for a few days and then it hit me.

Go to the gym in the morning before David gets up.

Duh.

He wakes, or we wake him, at 7:00a every morning. So, I’ve been getting up at 5:15a and going to the gym.

And I love it.

I love the gym atmosphere. I love the alone time. And I love that I’m able to get my work out in before he wakes up for the day.

I need an extra cup of coffee, no doubt, but it’s worth to me in order to feel good.

It is literally the hardest thing in the world to wake up at before the sun comes up but I’m always glad I did when I leave the gym.

So I’m ready to get rid of these pesky pounds, start wearing my old clothes again, and feel a little bit healthier and stronger.

Yes! I wake up at 6:00 am to go jogging each morning, my kids wake up around 8:00. It brings some peace to my day, having that alone time to refresh my body and my soul. I’m a better mama when I exercise in the morning, plus getting to look hot for my husband. And you know… all that health stuff too. ; )

Blogilates is awesome! Highly recommend it. She has a great website where she lists a monthly calendar with links already set up to her youtube videos. I have a 15 month old daughter and it’s been the easiest plan for me to follow so far. The videos are short, but are great workouts and will leave you feeling sore and strong!

Good for you Kate! Keep it up! I get up at 4:30 every morning to work out in my living room for 45-50 minutes. I started slow with the Jillian Michaels DVDs (about 30 min per workout) and have now moved up to kettlebells, which I love! I have about 8 different DVDs that I rotate so I don’t get bored and I am honestly in the best shape of my life. At 46 I have sculpted arms and abs for the first time in my life. I am healthy, at a healthy weight, and just ran my first 5K over the weekend. Getting healthy and fit is the best thing I’ve EVER done for myself…and skinny jeans are awesome!!

I would agree 100% that its more in the way you are wired and men are more wired to have that self motivation and drive, not to mention it is easier for men! My husband and I are kind of in the same place, I have a bit more to go to reach my goal and he met his a while ago and is so much more motivated to keep it up.

Good for you. All the jumping probably wouldn’t have been great for your knees, anyway. I did Insanity for a month and then quit because I feared I was doing real damage to my knees. It was basically nothing BUT jumping. Glad you’re feeling good!

I did insanity for about 3 weeks before I injured my kneck so severely I wasn’t able to get myself out of bed. My 1st vertebrae (the one that guards your brain stem at the bace of your skull) was about half an inch to the right of where it wass supposed to be because of those workouts. I’ll take my dance workouts and treadmill any day!

Good for you, mama! Maybe you will inspire me to do the same. I’m close to my pre-preggo weight, but I was trying to LOSE weight when I got pregnant, so I’m definitely not in my ideal place πŸ™‚ It’s just hard to figure out which would benefit me more: the extra sleep or the work out. When he was a newborn, it was sleep. Now that he is mostly sleeping through the night…probably the workout. I’m not a gym person, though, so maybe some yoga and a walk (which is easier to do when it’s not freezing temps outside…)

If there are days you can’t get to the gym, P90X(3) has been working well for me. It’s the latest version of P90X and it’s only 30 minutes a day, which is much more manageable for me with 3 kids than getting to the gym, working out for an hour and then getting home. Plus it’s lots of different kinds of workout – from Yoga to crazy cardio to pilates to weights. I’m so much stronger now!

I LOVE morning workouts – it’s the only way I can ever reliably find the time to exercise, and I feel like it sets a really good tone for my day in terms of food accountability and healthy choices. One time I had a random locker room conversation with a woman at my gym at like 5 AM and she said “well, my mother always said “you always have time for the first thing you do every morning.” That really stuck with me, and I find myself always doing my most important stuff first thing in the day. Good for you!! Also, I wanted to add, if you do need to change up your schedule, you could always alternate — like, go ONE night a week, ONE morning a week, and ONE afternoon a week… baby steps… things may change at some point with little dude’s sleep schedule and it is back to square one. But you’ll figure it out. Good job!

After my second baby and 20 extra pounds to lose- I started Atkins Diet because I didn’t have time to work out either. I have lost 28 pounds and am at my first pre-pregnancy weight. It is a great jump start motivator to see the weight come off quickly. I have done this diet twice in the past and it does work.

Hi Kate….If there is a YMCA near you, a lot of them include the children’s Stay and Play with a family membership. If you’re comfortable, you could leave David there and they will take care if him and play with him in the same building while you work out. Then you wouldn’t have to get up so early if you didn’t want to. Plus, down the road when David is a little older, there are programs at the Y he can benefit from. Just an idea. Best of luck!!

Try Blogilates on YouTube! She also has an app that you can download to your tablet or phone. I have subscribed to her calendar for $0.99 a month. This allows me to use her calendar that she uploads herself and each day it’s a new activity – legs, arms, butt… It’s really fun and Cassey makes it worth it. She encourages you through the entire workout (lucky for her she can BREATHE!) and before you know it’s 30 minutes has gone by. It’s made me feel stronger and more healthy. Finding time to exercise is difficult, but if you do find the time, try her videos!

So, I’m trying to add an afternoon workout to my daily routine. But, it’s like the day flies by and suddenly its dinner time. Sigh. So I’m really trying to squeeze in two to three workouts right now a week.

I really needed to see this because it completely is a priority issue for most people. I don’t WANT to wake up early to work out, but bottom line, it’s probably the only way it’ll get done for the day-because I certainly don’t WANT to do it after working 8-10 hours a day. Thanks Kate!

Good for you! I have twin boys and have been struggling to lose 15-20lbs myself. I finally started getting up at 4am to go to the gym and now I am addicted. Ive been doing it for about 2 months now. If I don’t make it (I have only missed about 4 days the entire time) I feel completely off. Some days I still do T25 in the evening after the boys are asleep just for a little extra kick. It is weird though how when I was nursing and burning all those extra calories I could eat whatever I wanted and still lose weight but now that I am working out, burning tons and tons of calories, watching what I eat, it doesn’t seem to be coming off nearly as quickly. But I feel better, and stronger so its still a win!

I don’t have a child and I have gained 20 lbs since my wedding last Sept (Winter blues). This month I decided I am tired of being unhealthy and decided to join CrossFit, now for some that is a little extreme but my background was swimming, so I love a group atmosphere where you still have individual goals but a group and a trainer that pushes you to get to them! I don’t like to work out in the evening either because its my wind down time from work, and I have puppies to play with and dinner to cook before my husband gets home. I feel it is very important wherever you are in life to do things for yourself, even if it is an hour a day to do something that makes you feel good. Some of my Mom friends have said they just accept their “mom” body and they tell me just wait until we have children my body will never be the same and looking frumpy is the new normal. Maybe I am naive, or stubborn about that, but I refuse to believe that will be my normal. I love the feeling after a workout when you just did something you thought you couldn’t do, or the next day your legs are so sore that sitting down is painful. That pushes me to be a better person, I have more energy throughout the day and I honestly think it makes me more productive and happier! I think it is a wonderful thing to see and read about that you have struggled a little with this because I am on your side and I am proud of you. It is also comforting to know not everything is rainbows and butterflies, I love how honest your blog is! I only hope when I become a mom I can find the motivation to workout in the morning, continue to work, and take time to do things for myself. So keep up the awesome work!

Girl, stop stressing. Seriously. Why do we women always stress about this sort of thing? You created a human and it took 9 months. Now you have to take care of that human, feed it, clothe it, bathe it, keep it alive. It’s ok to relax and recuperate. Give your body what it needs. Rest.

Also, I do agree with whoever wrote about Blogilates. Cassey has been a great motivator. The workouts are short but effective.

Amy says · 04.17.14

Good for you! That’s a tough decision to make when it’s so easy to sleep until the baby wakes up. But remember, it takes a full year for a woman’s body to recover and get back to “normal” so cut yourself a little slack for not being perfect 5 months later. Your body did some pretty crazy hard stuff for a long time and it needs a chance to heal.

I am right there with you, a year after my second and 10 pounds I would love to lose. I have started making small changes in the last few weeks. Switching cereal to oatmeal in the morning. No snacking after dinner, and trying to cut out the occasional beer after the boys are in bed. A few time a week I run or do Insanity, but it has not been consistent. The hardest part is we have no local gym with daycare, so I either have to do something before the morning rush of getting us all out the door by 7:30, or after I pick up the kids, which makes for a hectic evening of dinner and bedtime. Hopefully these small changes will help jump start some bigger changes and more habits created. You can do it! Just keep talking about it. It won’t happen over night, but others’ ideas and encouragement will help.

Ahhh, I’m jealous. Findi time to exercise is my dilemma, too. And since I work full time, I get up around 5:30 or so, but I immediately have to start the routine of getting ready for work, and getting two kids ready for the day, before our rush out the door. And I just can’t force myself up earlier than that. I’ve tried. πŸ™ I’ve done spurts of working out in the evening, but I refuse to do it before the kids are in bed – that’s my family time. Too precious to waste on exercise. Then, after I do daily chores, it’s 9pm, and I’m too exhausted. The life of moms are too busy. If I only had another 12 hours each day….

By the way, I also tried T25, and I just hated it. I thought it was the most boring workout. I’m out of shape so it was hard to begin with, but I just detested the exercises. I loved Turbo Jam much more…looking forward to seeing PiYo later this year. If I could only find the time to do it.

I struggle with this too. I have an almost 4-year-old and a 9 month-old. Both pregnancies were extremely hard on me and didn’t allow me to exercise. When my youngest was 10 weeks old I started doing Farrell’s at 5:00a.m. It was a good jump start, but our budget doesn’t allow for gyms anymore. Now I have to get up at 4:45 to get myself ready, two kids up and ready and out the door by 6:50 a.m. and be to work at 7:30. By the time the kids are in bed I can ready to collapse. I need to find a way to squeeze something in.

I am right there with you. I had three kids in less than three years, so my body was/is a mess. My little guy turned a year old a few months back and I quit breastfeeding him last month. So now I have no more excuses. (Losing weight while breastfeeding, it just seemed to come to a standstill – lose last pounds wouldn’t budge.) So now I am recommitted to lose the last 13 pounds. I am limited to the cardio-in-front-of-the-TV route though. We live in a tiny town with no gym for 30 miles, and it is Iowa, so it is cold, icy, and snow-covered all winter. I am very thankful for YouTube and the ability to hook the iPad up to the TV and do any workout I want for free.
Wishing you good luck on your fitness journey!

So happy you found something that works for you! I had my first baby about 9 weeks ago, and before that I was very good about working out, hitting the Y 5 to 6 days a week. I hardly slowed down at all. I was still taking spin classes and lifting weights the week before I had Connor, and I only gave up harder plyometric stuff because of how much my lower back hurt afterward. I’ve made it to the Y twice since having Connor. I’m back at work now and I barely have the time to do what I HAVE to do in the evenings and let’s not even talk about my energy levels. I can hardly muster the desire to work my fingers on the keyboard for a blog update much less go jogging or drive to the Y for a workout. I hope that’ll change in the next week or so because, like you, I have some cute clothes I want to wear this summer. I pretty much lost all my baby weight within a few weeks of having Connor, but staying at home was rough and the pantry was my friend so I’ve put on a few pounds that need to go!

I find people who can get up so early to work out AMAZING. My hubs and I have been doing T25 for the last 8 weeks or so. We started… then got really sick and took two weeks off, and basically started over again. He is already looking ripped, I still have lots of baby fat to get rid of, but I can tell my body is changing underneath, so hopefully with some more nutrition tweaks I’ll start slimming down. I’ve loved working out with my husband (Even if it’s at 9:30 every night!) And I love how I feel all the time now. So much more energy! Good for you getting active again!

Hi Kate,

Could you post what is your work out routine these days? I take classes at the gym in the afternoon twice a week and I think I am going to try to go in the mornings to see if it’s my thing lol.

Xaviera Hookway says · 04.17.14

I seriously respect he time you take for yourself a the gym, so early each day! My boss is a mother of two and a working MD. She also gets up before the sun and goes running every morning, rain, snow or shine.
My conclusion from her, your comments, and all the others: To be a mom and fit in any sort of refreshing athletic time on a regular basis, it is necessary to do it before the babes wake up for the day. This I will remember when I become a mother!

Hi Kate, thank you for your posts, all of them! My question is, well first, they will be adding an excersise bike, weight machine, and a treadmill to our work. I mean it’s no gym BUT it’s free and accessible to all of us. I haven’t been to a gym ever (except for a curcuit gym for a few months many years ago). What would you be doing to achieve your goal? Thank you again for inspiration. I’m no skinny person but the extra pounds I carry aren’t pretty. I’m tired all the time. Yes my two kids have a lot to do with it along with a full time job, and a house to keep up with, but still! I would like the energy to do everything! Thanks!

You go, girl! I have to be out of the house at 7, so waking up and getting to the gym just can’t happen unless I were to get up at like 4:30… I agree, evening time is so precious. Hopefully I’ll figure it all out soon.

Where do you go to Pure Barre?? I go to Durham!!! I’ve been going for two months and I’m addicted. So far, things are tighter….time to clean up my eating, and I think I’ll see a lot of good changes! I don’t ever make it to the 6 am class though! 4:30 is more my speed, and if I’m lucky, I cut away from work to go at noon!

Its great that you have found something you enjoy that gets you active. Just keep in mind… it took 9 months to get the weight on, so give yourself just as much time to get it off. Also, nursing isn’t a magic bullet for weight loss… I nursed for 8 months and my body CLUNG to the baby weight the whole time… the minute I stopped, it started coming off. Go figure. Good luck with your fitness goals!

I converted to morning workouts a while ago. Do I like getting up at 5:15 am? No. But I LOVE not coming home from work and then having to work out. So it’s a trade off. I have been a long time video/DVD home exerciser so luckily I wake up and just head to the basement. So Good for you! Glad to see you found your thang. Also good to know that there is so much jumping in T25. I would love to see a full review from you in the future. Take care.

There are non-jumping modifications for everything, but it is fairly repetitive…

Ugh… Thank you for posting this! This post pretty much sums it up. I get up at 5am, nurse, get ready for work, nurse again at 7 am, then leave for work. I run in the door at 4pm to nurse after work, then again at 6pm and 8pm. It’s hard to find time to work out. And I’m not getting up before 5am! We have started going for 2 mile walks with him in the Ergo. It’s not much and the pounds aren’t melting off…. But it’s something. This parenting thing is hard, huh?

I’m a first time momma to a 3 month old and had the same issue as you. I just don’t feel fit or strong. I bought T25 too, and it didn’t really work for me. Cardio in the living room…not my thing. I don’t really have the option to go to the gym in the morning because my husband works nights and isn’t home yet, so I bought Jillian Michaels 90 Day Body Revolution. I can do the video in 30 minutes in the morning before the little dude wakes up, but it uses weights so I feel like the workout feels more productive and is getting me toned instead of just doing a bajillion jumping jacks. It sounds like you’ve got a system figured out (and, really, the most important part of everything motherhood related is finding out what works for you) but if going to the gym gets too hard, I’d totally recommend Jillian’s Body Revolution. I might even send my T25 back. Sorry Shawn T.

Haha, I was going to recommend Pure Barre…you may want to revisit it down the road. I’ve done the gym, group exercise (spin, pilates), and running, and I have to say PB has hands down given me the best results. It’s also nice because you don’t have to think about what to do when you work out – every class is different, and you can always challenge yourself. I also find that signing up online keeps me from skipping.

aliza says · 04.17.14

Kate, how long have you been doing Pure Barre? Are you seeing results? I started going about 3 weeks ago, and I’m going 4-5 times per week. Seeing a little bit of change in my body, but I’ve gained 3 lbs!
I have you say, I like Bar Method sooo much better, if you have one near you, I highly recommend it!!!

I feel so silly doing cardio in front of my TV or computer too! I have lots of friends who love it. Not me. I mean, maybe if I had some workout room where I was surrounded by equipment and not my nice, soft sofa. Duh.

I have a set of Physique 57 DVD’s if you ever get a hankerin’ to do a barre workout at home. You have to use a chair. It’s so not the same but it’s hard. You are welcome to try them any time.

I love doing stretches like yoga and Pilates and barre as well. I totally agree with you, it’s how you’re wired. I LOVE the feeling after I’m done, like my body is content. I get you. Have you tried using a kettle bell for muscle tone on off days when you do barre? You may enjoy that as well. Or use some resistance bands.

I’m right there in the EXACT same boat with you, and my baby is 3! I came to the same conclusion as well. Sacrificing my evenings with my husband was a no-go, and I have full time job while my daughter’s in preschool. The only logical answer? Early AM workouts. I’ve ALWAYS hated organized work outs and have been physically pretty lazy (but naturally petite) until the last few months when I just couldn’t take the “softness” of everything on me after being a mom these last 3 years. And you know what? I LOVE IT, TOO! The alone time to center and do something for yourself is mind blowing. Good luck with your journey! πŸ˜€

If anyone is looking for at home stuff and you don’t want to get bored check out fitnessblender.com, its a husband and wife team and they have hundreds of videos that make you feel like you’re with a personal trainer. The best part is everything is free, but for a minimal fee you can purchase a program so you don’t have to think about what to do each day. Best of luck with your fitness and I commend you on getting it together so quickly, it took me 3 kids to find a way to work out.

I started my fitness journey just over a year ago. The best and most inspiring and motivating thing for me has been to take a picture from the front, side, arms flexed and back/rear on the same morning (before eating) every week. Some weeks I back tracked, but it only motivated me more to get the next week’s picture even better. Plus it’s a great log of time! I have done that every week for over a year and I LOVE seeing my body’s progress. I recommend that over watching the scale any day!

Unfortunately I was a single mom when my daughter turned 1, so heading to the gym was not an option. Many gyms have a baby-sitting service, but I felt guilty not spending awake time with my daughter (since I work full-time as well). But your solution ended up being similar to mine! I had to get back to my “dating” figure and I was up at 4AM doing P90X in my basement. 4 years later I’m remarried (thanks to your hair tutorials, I did my own hair for the wedding). Unfortunately I did gain back some weight falling so dopey in love and eating too much. So this posting motivated me to lose that last 15 lb again (well 5 to pre-baby weight and 10 for my ideal weight). No time like the present. Thanks EVERYONE for sharing, I love to hear the variety everyone does! Love it! Good luck to all!

I have two little ones and I workout with http://www.mytailoredfitness.com. You can build your own workout videos with various little segments and it’s awesome. You can tailor the videos for a length that fits your time allowance. It’s awesome and the site is geared towards moms! They also hold mini-classes that are free with your subscription, that assign you workouts and nutrition challenges. I like the accountability from that. Anyway, check it out. You can try it free for 15 days to check it out. And if you contact the administrator who was my college roommate and tell her you could feature her program on your site, I’m sure you can work out a deal. Good luck. Being a mom is awesome but boy does it do a wonder on your body! Love you site!

Early morning workouts are the best! I have t25 as well and it’s a great thing for have in your back pocket, but I am the same in needing classes; spin, boot camp, etc that start between 5:15 and 5:45 are perfect. I’m home in time to do breakfast for the kids and get them out the door for school and then I have the morning with the babe. I started early mornings last summer when I was training for my second marathon and my youngest was ten months old. I was running as early as 4:30am on longer mileage days but, man, does it feel good to have it done! Good for you! I know it’s all in how you feel, but you look fantastic!

We’ve been talking about joining the Y as a family, but not sure the timing is right. We are very active in the summer so I don’t know how much we’d go. Does your gym have a child care? How To Get Your husband Back & Avoid Divorce,Love Spells That Really Work Fast

My Name is Vicky Lorimer, I am From United Kingdom.i am hear to give testimony of how i got back my husband, we got married for more than 9 years and have gotten two kids. thing were going well with us and we are always happy. until one day my husband started to behave in a way i could not understand, i was very confused by the way he treat me and the kids. later that month he did not come home again and he called me that he want a divorce, i asked him what have i done wrong to deserve this from him, all he was saying is that he want a divorce that he hate me and do not want to see me again in his life, i was mad and also frustrated do not know what to do,i was sick for more than 2 weeks because of the divorce. i love him so much he was everything to me without him my life is incomplete. i told my sister and she told me to contact a spell caster, i never believe in all this spell casting of a thing. i just want to try if something will come out of it. i contacted Dr Brave for the return of my husband to me, they told me that my husband have been taken by another woman, that she cast a spell on him that is why he hate me and also want us to divorce. then they told me that they have to cast a spell on him that will make him return to me and the kids, they casted the spell and after a week my husband called me and he told me that i should forgive him, he started to apologize on phone and said that he still love me that he did not know what happen to him that he left me. it was the spell that Dr Brave casted on him that make him to come back to me today,me and my family are now happy again today. thank you Dr Brave for what you have done for me i would have been nothing today if not for your great spell. i want you my friends who are passing through all this kind of love problem of getting back their husband, wife , or ex boyfriend and girlfriend to contact [email protected]. and you will see that your problem will be solved without any delay.

I have been wanting to try the T25 but hesitant to spend the $$$ for fear I wouldn’t like it or use it. Want me to take yours off your hands?? πŸ˜‰ The idea of a quick 25 minute effective workout without having to leave my 4 kids or home seems ideal! Going to the gym just isn’t an option even if it has child care since my youngest has Autism. That sort of unstructured group setting just doesn’t work for him. Kate, I wanted to tell you about something “barre-ish” in case you wanted to mix it in with your gym workouts. I am a BarreAmped instructor (another barre method aside from Pure Barre) but before teaching I took and LOVED the classes. Anyway, the woman who created our method – Suzanne Bowen – offers streaming workouts at suzannebowenfitness.com, and subscriptions are $10 per month. She offers many barre-oriented workouts but also has cardio elements in some workouts, too, plus the lengths vary. It’s a good mix. She’s about to start a “challenge” on the 28th of this month, if it’s something you’d like to check out. I love it for if I’m not able to get to a class or am traveling, etc, or simply to get another “flavor” of teacher πŸ™‚
