How to Pick a Bold Lip Color

High Five for Friday
Reader Question:
I am having trouble finding the perfect shade of red lipstick. I see it on people and I love it but I just can’t seem to find one for me. Is there a good trick? –j

Lipstick is one of those things that you need to develop a comfort level with. For some women that comes easy. For others, it may take a little while before they feel comfortable and confident in a bold lip color.

When it comes to reds, trial and error is the easiest way. And honestly? If you really want to wear the right red for you, go to a makeup counter and try on a few shades. It will be worth the time investment.

Otherwise, there’s a few basic guidelines when picking out a bold lip color. I branched out and covered three different “hues”. Use this guide as a basic starting point. Don’t look at it as a hard and fast rule. There are so many different shades of colors available to try!

I hope this helps as a starting point!

Thank you for this! I kept buying different colors on my own (with no luck), and I recently went to the make up counter. I walked away with a color that I never would have chosen but that I love and wear all the time! Happy Monday! xo

It’s like your posts read my mind! I’ve been trying to find a red on my own to no avail. I think I’ll be hitting up the Sephora counter.

I recently hit up sephora for the same reason and I am now obsessed with the urban decay lipsticks in “venom” and “catfight”. Plus sephora had a great return policy so if you aren’t happy, you can return it! 🙂

Is there a best color for skinny lips? Everything I try just looks silly on me.

I love your blog! But I guess I have a bit of a unique problem. I have very pale skin but I have warm undertones. So I can’t wear the cool berries or reds. What do you suggest for pinks and reds on people with pale skin and yellow undertones?

try a warm shade. It’s really a trial and error game. If you can, have a makeup artist at a beauty counter help you!

Can you please explain the difference between warm and cool? Even with hair colors, I do not understand when people talk about warm and cool what they are referring to – thanks!

Warm colors fall in the category of reds, oranges and yellows, while cool colors fall opposite of that with blues, purples and greens.

Helpful breakdown! It has taken me forever to finally admit that with my skin tone, oranges are just never going to look the way they do on other people… I’m so much better off sticking with the blue-toned red and pinks! (I mean, I still wear them if I want, but they look the way they look!)

Do you use a matching lip liner for all of these lipsticks or is a nude-colored liner fine to use? I love bold lipstick colors, but they fade fast and they sometimes smear outside of my lip line. Thanks!

I go for matte for every day bold. Less shine makes me feel like it’s more wearable. I love NARS matte velvet plus in Dragon Girl. I’m anxious to try out Revlon’s new matte “pencils” but they’re sold out everywhere I go!

If you wear a bold red color on your lips what should the rest of your make up be like?

I always worry about bold lips because I know you should keep your eyes light to put the focus on your lips, but then I feel like my eyes are either too plain or too overdone. How would you balance it?

Mia, I would defenitely say that the bold lip should be matched with more simple makeup when it comes to the eyes. And make sure nothing else on your face looks even slightly red. So conceal around your nose and eyes well. Hope this helped.
