I have what I like to call my “house clothes.”

It’s the basic outfit I wear when I’m at the house that I sometimes change if I leave. It’s comfortable, functional for nursing, and it’s not pajamas.

After I shower and get ready in the morning (which I do during his nap), I make it a point to put on real clothes. I do, however, totally understand the draw of getting back in comfy clothes, or as my sister and I call them : “cozies.”

But if I do that, I find that I’m a little bit lazier than I would be otherwise.

I’m still wearing my maternity jeans. My pre-pregnancy jeans can be put on, but they just can’t be buttoned. But, I’m still up 14 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight, so I’m holding off on buying any jeans until I see what fits when I’m back down to my “usual” weight.

What I have added to my wardrobe, however, are more cardigans! I’m also on the hunt for a few loose tank tops to wear under said cardigans. I’ve had a harder time finding those, but I’m sure as we get closer to spring clothes they’ll pop up.

I’m also keeping my eyes open for more flats and mini-wedges. Between the two I prefer a mini-wedge,  but either are great for every day.

I just found a sweater cardigan at Eddie Bauer last weekend. Not sure about you but I love a good deal and it was a $70 cardigan that I bought for $13. I live in VA – and don’t believe you are too far from there, so maybe an Eddie Bauer nearby has the same deal? I’m wearing it today, in fact and find it to be one of the most comfortable pieces I have bought in quite a while. 🙂

I love that you’re so real and honest about all of this pregnancy related stuff, like sharing the very normal fact that you’re still in the process of losing some baby pounds. I’m due in May and feel stressed out when I see and hear the “lost all the baby weight in the blink of an eye” bragging. Thank you for your healthy and wonderful approach to sharing! (and you look FABULOUS!)

I bought a dozen tanks from forever 21 for $2.80 each before my son was born. Seven months later, I still wear one everyday for easy access to nurse. Best addition to my breastfeeding attire!

Check out Old Navy. We always have lots of different styles and colors of tank tops, and we sell pretty jewelry now too. I just bought myself a new scarf and wallet after work last night. Its my favorite place to shop, that’s why I work there! And there is the cutest onesie for a baby boy that says “Dr. Love” on it that you might like for your little man. 🙂

Target is the absolute BEST for cardigans! They have so many options, and since I’ve already tried them on I just pick the pattern I like, I don’t even have to try them on since I already know they fit. It’s AMAZING.

I know this is unrelated to the post, but have you found a Heat Protectant that you like?

Reply

Target used to carry nursing tanks. They were great. I even wore them when I went back to work so it was easier to pump.

Old navy has a really great tank that I like to buy called the Tami. It covers all bra straps, something that I have scarcely ever found.

Reply
Unknown says · 01.23.14

Love the Tami as a nursing tank too! It doesn’t stretch out and can be pulled down if worn under a cardigan. And isn’t too stretchy to show too much down in front.

LOVE the Tami from Old Navy!! So much that I actually threw out ALL of my others and replaced with the Tami You can never have too many…..right?

I love your blog! I also am a huge fan of tanks and cardi. I recently found some fantastic tanks at Loft (my favorite store :). They have some cute ones with patterns, stripes, and/or ruffles.

I love the solid color tanks from Target, they are about $9 and I have them in about 15 colors. They sell them year round. They are the Mossimo brand (they have some that are ribbed material, but I prefer the non-ribbed). I enjoy reading your blog! Oh, and one can never have too many cardigans. 🙂

We have a Banana Republic outlet near us that I usually go to for all the tanks I wear under cardigans. If you have one near you then you should check it out. I usually have a hard time justifying buying from the regular BR store but an outlet makes things so much easier to justify. 🙂 You look beautiful as always.

Target has the best spanx type nursing tanks. I forget the name, but I wear mine almost everyday. It smooths the bumps and holds everything in place. Even though I weigh the same my body still isn’t as taught as it coukd be and they help keep the jiggle under control.

Elise says · 01.23.14

I usually really start dropping weight (with nursing) around 3-4 months. I also get a lot hungrier, too! You’ll lose it, it really just takes time. I definitely am the same way – try to workout and get dressed everyday… and make my bed! Makes me more productive and a happier momma in general!

I always feel more “dressed” and productive when I’m in jeans instead of workout clothes, even though I feel energized whenever I get the time to work out. I need to keep my eyes open for cute flats, mine died last fall and haven’t been replaced!

I’m partial to the camis from Express!

This is great. I need to start doing this. I stay at home with my kids and also watch a few others in my home and spend all day in my cozies. 😉 When I do take the time to get “dressed” I am MUCH more productive!

Nordstrom in their BP section has a boatload of tanks of various colors throughout the entire year.

I’m not a Mom yet, but I totally agree about the cozies making for a less productive day — must be a mental thing!

My sister and I just found the BEST tank tops. The brand is Nikibiki. We buy them at a local boutique, but I have seen them on Amazon. They are super soft and stretchy. She is 8 months pregnant and I have a very thin frame and we can both wear them. They are worth every penny!!

I have to agree with the tami tank from Old Navy as a great option. They are perfectly cozy, and not clingy at all but still show your shape. I recently got a pair of low wedges from Target! They are on clearance for $16 and come in black, brown and pewter!

I love that you still want to look good, but you adapt to what is needed now. I will warn you however, once he starts getting grabby, anything that dangles (earings, necklaces, etc.) will become an issue. Getting an earing yanked on really hurts.

Check American Eagle for tanks. They have some that have a zipper in the back very flowy and on sell now. I had a baby in April and am LOVING these with cardigans. http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?productId=2360_1788_175&catId=cat6270035
These are the new Spring ones they have out. Easy to nurse in as well

I really liked my maternity jeans for the several weeks after pregnancy too. They were much more comfortable than regular jeans while my midsection kind of went back to normal. Plus they’re just COMFY. 🙂 I wish regular jeans were as comfy as maternity jeans! Well, the Ann Taylor LOFT jeans are a decently close second.

My post-baby daily wardrobe wasn’t too dissimilar from yours, except I would layer a stretchy cami with ruched or gathered t-shirts. Just my thing. I have sort of a love affair with t-shirts. Trying to break out of the rut with jersey dresses and leggings, which feels like a t-shirt. Shoot. I love t-shirts. Okay, I’m going to stop talking about t-shirts now. LOL

D.Watson says · 01.24.14

I have to agree about the stretchy tank tops as well, I used the tami from old navy as a nursing tank, I wore one under everything and they have enough stretch and give that I could pull one side down to nurse and meanwhile my midsection was always covered.

You might not want to wait too long for new jeans. Even when I was under my pre-pregnancy weight I wasn’t in the size that I expected to be-things shifted. That’s okay, I just wish I would have sprung for the new jeans earlier. I think it would have helped me accept my new body.

Do you buy the waterproof covergirl lash blast? I bought it just recently and I am having a very hard time cleaning it off at the end of the day. I also bought the Ponds cleaning wipes to use after my eye-makeup remover didn’t take it off, and that isn’t working either. Any advice?

If you’re looking for LOOSE tanks as you said in your post ASOS has some really cute ones. I am a few months postpartum and have been thinking about ordering some as I am a bit self conscious about how regular tanks cling to my little “pooch.” The ones from ASOS look flowy yet still flattering and it’s really easy (and free!) to return stuff. I had great success with their maternity clothes as well.

Do not be in a hurry to lose weight. Im sure you look as cute as ever. even when I lost weight, my body changed after have my girls(via C-section) but I love them & a little weight is ok if it means I have them in my life. As for your house clothing…wow- i look sloppy now. But its comfort clothes for me when I’m home. Your son is beautiful!

Love that you’re in maternity jeans still! I’m up 31 lbs so far, due “any day now” and the idea of pre-pregnancy jeans terrifies me. I’m fully embracing maternity jeans after I deliver, at least for a while! 🙂

So impressed with your “house clothes” style. It took me much longer to get back in the swing of things after my girls were born. I stumbled on your site a few months back after finding your 30 piece x 30 outfits on pinterest. I was wondering if you might consider doing a postpartum 30/30 for those new (and not so new) moms who need to be comfortable and machine washable but stylish and not frumpy.

I love your daily “uniform.” 😀 Have you tried the Sugar Lips Seamless Rib Tank Top? http://amzn.com/B00C2TCP8M I learned about them from LifeInGraceBlog.com. Here’s the post where she sings their praises: http://www.lifeingraceblog.com/2013/04/closet-organizing-tips-and-my-favorite-clothes-part-2/ This tank is a great alternative to the traditional skinny strap tank and perfect for layering. I never have gotten over the “rules of fashion etiquette” my mother taught me, one of them being that your bra straps should not show! These tanks allow you to wear a traditional bra (or maternity bra) without your straps on display.

PS I have to tell you that I just found your blog and tutorials and I am IN LOVE with your hair (my daughter is too.) I am visiting my stylist in a few weeks and I am going armed with lots of photos of your hair so she can cut mine in a similar fashion. (It is currently quite a bit longer than what you see in my profile picture.) Also, I wanted to say that I was born in and spent the majority of my life in good ol’ NC (Greenville.) I felt such a connection to read you are in Raleigh. I’d track you down and gladly make the commute to have you cut my hair, but I now reside in wild Wyoming which is just a bit too far. 😀
