Elegant Curls, Fancy Bun, & Glam Ponytail (on RealSimple.com)

Without a doubt, one of the coolest opportunities that has come my way over the time I’ve spent blogging is creating hair tutorials for Realsimple.com.

Not only is Real Simple my favorite magazine, but the “.com” is a site I frequent for recipes, home ideas, gift ideas, etc.

I originally created 3 Holiday Party Hairstyles for Realsimple.com last year, and then this past summer I created 3 Bridal Styles.

And this time I’m back over on Realsimple.com with 3 more Holiday Hairstyles!

I envisioned the Elegant Curls style for a fancy holiday party, the Fancy Bun for a fun New Years Eve party, and the Glam ponytail for nearly anything you have going on this holiday season. And for those of you with curly hair? The Glam ponytail is a must-try in my book.

You have no idea how excited I was to see this elegant curls hairstyle!!! It is beautiful and I have always had trouble pinning back just that top portion of hair because I would either get too much or not enough pinned back and it just never looked right….but your tip on gauging this using your eyebrows is a wonderful tip and I can’t wait to try it now!! I also love the fancy bun and look forward to trying that one as well. These are my favorites of yours yet!!! Great job! 🙂

So pretty!! I think that glam ponytail is my favorite!! I need to practice doing buns on my hair so I can do that fancy bun. What an amazing opportunity working with Real Simple. Congrats on the continued success. That’s amazing.

I always enjoy your hair styles – they are so voluminous! As we say in the south, “the higher the hair, the closer to God.”

I love your tutorials! Question though: what do you recommend for straight hair? My hair doesn’t really hold a curl (without professional help) and most of your tutorials start off with curled/wavy hair. I know you mention that the styles should work for straight hair as well but I can’t seem to get them to look as put together as yours. Do you have any tips for those of us with hard to style hair?

Reply
Kate says · 12.05.13

It’s hard to answer this without knowing/getting my hands in your hair personally. I think the Glam ponytail would look really sleek on straight hair. Otherwise, I’d just say practicing different looks will help you learn what works best!

Love the Elegant Curls! I wear my hair that way often (whenever I don’t want to deal with my bangs), but I had never thought to pull a strand across the pins. It really elevates the whole look. Thanks once again for sharing so many awesome hairstyles!

These are great! I’m wearing the “glam ponytail” today! Just at work, nowhere fancy to be, but I liked it so much I had to try it. Super easy and CUTE! ( :

Beautiful styles! Would the fancy bun be very difficult for longer hair? (My longest layers hit at about bra strap length). I feel like the ‘looping’ would be trickier with longer strands? Thanks again for the inspiration 🙂

Love these, and want to try the glam ponytail on my curly hair – however I’m rarely successful with an updo on my curly hair since if I mess up the first attempt (which I always do), it ruins the curl shape and results in frizz and I revert to the usual messy bun option. If you have any advice for doing curly hair (or a curly haired model to demonstrate) I would love to see it.

love the fancy bun — it actually looks like it MIGHT be easy enough that i (and my painfully fine hair) can handle it. out of hairspray right now though so it’ll have to wait 😉

I’d love to see some tutorials for hairstyles with bangs! I have long hair with thick bangs, and struggle to find some alternative everyday ways to wear it (besides ponytails). So many hairstyle – like cute little braids – look better with no bangs.

I cannot wait to try the bun! I sometimes use a sock bun, but it gets complicated if I’m a little sleepy. :/

I just want to thank you. I woke up terribly late this morning, and my curly hair was sticking straight out. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time for a shower. I quickly remembered that I read this post yesterday, so I decided to try out the fancy bun (minus the pulling two pieces out in the beginning part), and it’s the only bun I’ve ever been able to do successfully with my fine hair when it’s curly. Plus, it took me five minutes, and I was on time for work. Thank you thank you thank you. I even gave you props in today’s post: Far Out Friday
(I know yours looks better, but it tamed my crazy hair. I’m satisfied!)

I have chin length hair & did the “elegant curls” tonight for a party and received compliments on my hair all night! I’ve only had short hair since September so I was so happy to find a special occasion style that I could actually do. Thank you Kate!
