The perfect gift for mom

November Birchbox

My mom can be hard to shop for. I always want to get her something that she’ll really love and actually use. Practical but still fun, you know?

I know what she likes, and I know what kind of gifts she likes to receive, but for some reason I come up empty with ideas when it comes to Christmas or her birthday.

Whenever I’m struggling with what to get someone, I think about what I may like to receive. And I’ve been looking for a good book for months now. I’ve entered a season of quiet, before the baby comes, and now is as good as a time as ever to start a good book.

So I thought through my personal recommendations. The books I think everyone should read. And came up with a little list that could be perfect for my mom, or your mom if you happen to be in need of a gift idea for her.

1. While I haven’t read Who Loves You Best, by Tess Stimson, I’ve heard great things about it. It’s a story about motherhood and the joys, as well as challenges, that go along with it. I look forward to reading this book soon!

2. Homer’s Oddessy is a memoir written by Gwen Cooper about her blind cat. It is absolutely heart-warming. I found myself thinking about the book while I read it, and I nearly couldn’t put it down. It’s a perfect book for anyone in your life that has a soft spot for animals.

3. The Kite Runner, by Kahled Hosseini, became a favorite of mine right away. I read it years ago and loved discovering the relationship between two unlikely friends. It’s both wonderfully written and easy to get wrapped up in.

4. Same Kind of Different As Me, by Ron Hall and Denver Moore, completely changed the way I thought about those that may be homeless or poor. It’s a fascinating true story about how one man impacted the lives of Ron Hall and his wife, which inevitably impacted so many others.

5. The Memory Keepers Daughter, by Kim Edwards, was an emotional read. There were parts that were difficult to get through, and it’s a book that really makes you think. Consider giving this book with a pack of tissues to go along with it.

If you are an avid reader, you will truly appreciate the functionality and ease of having all your favorite books on a Kindle

The Kindle Paperwhite is a perfect gift for mom because she can carry over 1,000 titles around with her at a fraction of the weight of carrying a few paperback books. My mom travels a lot, and with her first grandchild on the way, I know she’ll be spending many hours sitting at airport terminals waiting for her flights. Instead of draining her smart phone battery, having a dedicated device to house her books is perfect for her.

The Kindle Paperwhite has a few new features, like a 25% faster processor, and an easier to use “page flip” feature. It’s also lighter, and has better lighting so you can read in a variety of places.

So instead of just getting your mom a book or two, consider the Kindle Paperwhite. It’s something that I’m sure she’ll love for years to come.

My daughter constantly borrows my kindle. I was actually thinking of getting her one for Christmas. At 13, whens she’s not playing with hair and makeup, she’s reading….now if the reverse side of the kindle has a mirror, how awesome would that be? 😉

The kindle is the perfect gift for my girls so I love your feedback about the Paperwhite as we are just starting to look. My oldest daughter’s teacher has 10 of them for her students and she loves it so we decided to get them each their own.

I have been thinking about getting my mom the Kindle for Christmas! She always is carrying around 2 -3 books with her, and then she only carries a mini purse, so having the slim kindle would be perfect for her! I think she likes to read multiple books at the same time, so having them all with her would be so convenient. Thanks for the giveaway, I would really love to win this one!

I would get my mom a kindle because she takes the bus for transportation a lot and would love to be able to read on the bus. PLUS we have some really needy cats and she would never have to worry about losing her place if the cats knocked the kindle out of her hands (not that they do that with her books now or anything……really they just need ALOT of attention)

My son (10) loves his Kindle- it’s so nice to be able to add a new book with the click of a button (and cheaper than purchasing a paperback) for my voracious reader when he finishes a book and wants to read the next in a series. I think it would be a great gift for any reader!

i have been thinking about getting my mom a kindle for quite a while but always seem to forget this great idea when her birthday and christmas comes around! i think that mom would really love the kindle not only because she has an entire library at her fingertips, but also because she struggles with dyslexia and the kindle (like changing the size of the font) would allow her to read a bit easier. mom always encouraged me to read as a child so that i could encounter all these wonderful new places to get lost in – it would be lovely to be able to share that same gift with her! If I were able to win a Kindle, I’d give it to my brother, who lives all the way overseas in Korea. It would make it a lot easier for him to be able to connect with books and with our family here in the US. I know that Kindles can share books amongst different users, and it would be the greatest Christmas gift for all of our Family.

Really, everything about it is just fantastic! A Kindle would make the PERFECT gift for my mom who is just as much of a bookworm as me. Well of course, where do I think I got it from? 🙂

I recently gifted a Kindle Paperwhite to my husband and he absolutely loves it! Instead of spending his time home from work watching TV, he curls up on the couch with his Kindle while I study (such is the life of a medical student). Last weekend I was in between rotations and decided to reread Catching Fire before the movie comes out this weekend. He had just read it, so I curled up with the Kindle and fell in love with that little device! We have an iPad but I love how lightweight and easy on the eyes it is. It’s now on *my* wishlist so we can both read separately at the same time – traveling, around the house, wherever!

This is something my parents actually gave my brother-in-law for Christmas a few years ago (the paperwhite wasn’t around yet, but I’m not sure which version they gave him). My brother-in-law is an avid reader and was deployed in Afghanistan. He was constantly ordering books and having them shipped to him and then having to ship them back to my sister when he was done reading them. So my parents were like hey a Kindle would be perfect so he could get books instantly and save lots of space and money. He absolutely loved it!

I’ve taken my Kindle Fire to the beach or outdoors and had issues with the glare or the brightness. It would be great for her to have something that she could read without straining and also, doesn’t have TOO many options (iPad) that can be overwhelming for older users. Throughout the years, she’s worked so hard to give us everything we could want and need; it would be so nice to shower her with a few nice gifts this year – including a Kindle Paperwhite!

He won’t have to worry about carrying multiple books for his longer trips or squishing the book in his carry on.He can also play games and other things on it while trying to pass the time in airports/on the plane! My mom would love a Kindle for Christmas. She has been suffering from fibromyalgia for many years, leaving her in a great deal of pain some days, even unable to get out of bed. On these days, being able to have something to read would help her make the best of a bad situation. She has always loved to read and with a Kindle, she could have access to hundreds of books at her fingertips.

This would be a wonderful gift for my father. A few years ago he was up on our roof taking leaves out of our gutter when he slipped off the ladder and fell to the driveway. Without going into too many details, he needed reconstructive surgery to his face, hand and elbow. Because of his extensive recovery, he has taken up reading, crosswords and internet surfing. 🙂 Even when he was laid up in bed, he never once complained. I am a busy mom with eight children, four grandchildren and somehow made the wise decision that I wanted to return to school to finish my degree. Working 40 hrs a week, being a full time student and attending all of my children’s sporting events doesn’t leave me much room for personal reading. Having a Kindle to bring with me in the car, sitting at games and even reading to my granddaughters would be much easier (it would also take up much less space!) Thank you for the opportunity to win a Kindle!

I thought to myself, “I’ll just take a peek around it and see if it’s something she would even use.” (It was used — I didn’t open a brand new gift for her.) As soon as I logged in with my account, I knew it wasn’t going anywhere so I selfishly kept it after convincing myself she’d get more use out of an ipad than a kindle 😛 (Which she confirmed — I swear I’m not as horrible of a daughter as that makes me sound!)

The kindle would be a great gift for my husband since he travels for work. He loves to read so he always brings a book or two to read. This would eliminate the need for paper books and he’d have endless choices with the kindle if he did not like a book.

My stepdaughter turns 17 next week (the day before Thanksgiving) and was struggling with reading and comprehension last school year. My stepson (13 years old) also struggles, so I made it my job to start a book club with our family. We read the Hunger Games (books 1 & 2) as a family. We were all assigned so many chapters each week and we discussed every Thursday night. We also incorporated quiet reading time throughout the week. They not only finished but LOVED them! We then read To Kill a Mockingbird … they did great!

Her grades improved dramatically by the end of last school year. We didn’t read many books during the summer … it was more optional. However, when this school year started she went to her high school library and checked out a book for her English class. She has since read four novels and is starting her fifth! May not seem like a lot but it’s pretty incredible for her. I’d love to give her a Kindle as a reward and inspiration to keep reading!

Now, if only we could get her brother to love reading … 🙂

LOVE the Kindle paperweight. Backlight option (but not necessary), small and easy to hold, long battery, large storage. Kindle has daily deals that you can subscribe to that pop in my email every day. I’ve found SUCH good deals there. Sometimes Kindle books are not a lot cheaper than hard books (and I prefer hard books anyway) but my Kindle is such a winner all the same. I’m able to carry around a lot more for travel and get books at next to no cost much of the time. All the classics are FREE too if you are of the geekier crowd and love Pride and Prejudice.

Bonus? I think if you liked The Kite Runner you would love Nowhere but Home and/or Code Name Verity. Code Name Verity is a bit slower but Nowhere but Home is my idea of perfection.

I’ve really thought about getting one for my Dad. My mom died about 2 years ago and my dad either watches tv or reads a lot. He is a big fan of westerns and has actually started going to the library since my mom died and checking out books. One day he was looking for a book in a series but couldn’t find it at the library. I showed him how I could go on and find the book for him and order it and have it delivered instantly. He couldn’t believe it and kept talking about how neat that was. Would love to get him a Kindle with a gift card so he can order books anytime he would like to fill his time since he is retired and really missing having someone there to talk to. I learned my love of reading from him and know how a good book can be better than therapy. Thanks for your consideration. [email protected]

I started reading to my twin boys when they were infants. As they got older, we started the tradition of my reading to them before bed. To be delight, we continued this tradition until they were around twelve years old. At that point, they thought they were “too old” for me to be reading to them before bed, so they started reading in bed on their own. Often I had to turn their lights off for them because they would have been up reading until the wee hours. However, when I did this, they would simply turn on their flashlights and continue to read. Then we made the huge mistake of buying them ipod touches. Now instead of reading a book, their noses are in their ipods. My hope is that if we win the ereader, that it will re-ignite their love for reading books! Since they seem so fond of electronics 🙂 [email protected]

The Kindle Paperwhite would make a great gift for my sister who is a high school English teacher. She reads during the school year and summer to find the best books to teach to her students, and then when she has free time, she loves to sit down with a good book. ([email protected])

Nothing is better than getting caught up in a good book! This would be a wonderful shared gift for me and my husband. We have a 6 month old cardiac baby who requires tube feeding. My mom was my inspiration for reading and finding a passion for it as I was growing up. She always had a book in hand(usually Danielle Steele) that she was reading. I remember asking her why she would read so much? She said, “It was because it was a journey away from the reality of life and experiencing new things. There is an excitement to imagining the characters, places and story!” From that time on I was a reader along side her. Even to this day I love the thought of picking up a book and escaping away from reality for a little bit. My mom has been considering a Kindle for a while but she is worried about how hard it may be to use it. I would really love to get her one for Christmas and unlock the next generation of reading for her. Thanks for the opportunity to remember this story and share it with you! – [email protected]

This Kindle would be perfect for my Mom. She is truly an inspiration, after 25 years in the Army she decided to retire and be a stay at home mom for my brother and I. Fast forward 17 years, my brother is a senior is high school and I am in my first year of graduate school. She just recently went back to school to get her Masters in teaching because she felt that she has taught us all that we needed to know, and we have told her she has done an amazing job. So she thought, why not bestow this knowledge and experience with my own kids onto others to enrich their lives. After a fast track masters program, for the past year and a half we have not seen her. She is burrowed in our computer room doing task after task so she can start teaching as soon as possible. Last week she finished her last assignment and student teaching! Now that she has a break until her certification and license comes in, I figure what better way to wind down then with a good book, and what better way to read a good book then on a Kindle! I am so proud of her and would love this opportunity to be able to give that to her 🙂

I LOVED my Kindle, especially since I travel around the world so much. But, my home was recently broken into and my Kindle was one of the items taken. Is it selfish to want to win it for myself? 🙂 maynymph59(at)gmail(dot)com

I want to get a Kindle for my daughter; she reads everything in sight. She’s such a gracious young lady too; she would appreciate it.

Not related; but I LOVE your blog. Your pictures of your house are wonderful!

Being an avid reader myself i know the importance of an e-book reader, it lets you carry all your books without occupying any space in your travel bag. kindle paper white is an amazing value for money gadget you can buy for yourself or any of your family member who loves reading.

electronic gadgets always make some useful gifts for your loved ones. nice post 🙂

You can never go wrong with books. My mom is an avid reader. For years I would buy her her favorite Amish books for any holiday. She recently got a kindle that she really loves and she just uses that now. Now I always buy her Amazon gift cards so she can purchase new e-books for it. I think I’m going to also get her a pair of animal slippers for adults to go along with it this year. She loves animals and is pretty silly she’d love something like that. This way she’ll be comfortable when she’s reading!

I love that Free Time Feature, I am always looking at my watch to set time for the kids on their reading homework. The Kindle is on our family list, living in a small town, we have to travel to purchase books. With the Kindle, I would be saving gas driving to a book store to purchase the many books the little ones read, and can easily save time by downloading a book instead. Also while traveling it makes it very convenient to download books.

As a frequent traveller whom also loves books, a Kindle is the perfect compromise while still far more functional that most mobile ereader apps.
