Big stuff is happening around here!

If you follow on facebook or twitter, you may have seen that Justin and I had our offer accepted on a home last night! This is our first house, and we are very excited to finally be home owners.

And we have already been dreaming some upgrades/changes we'd like to make.

Other than decorative/esthetic changes, we'd really like to install granite/quartz, build some built-ins next to the fireplace, and build a built-it area in the "mudroom", right when you enter through the garage.

These are some of my favorite "pins" of home ideas. You can follow the Home board here if you are interested.

source unknown. please comment if you know.

I'm also really glad we'll be able to fully decorate the nursery since we'll be moved in before the baby gets here!

Speaking of the baby, I had my third appointment this morning.I'm 15 weeks. The NP used a doppler to look for the heartbeat. She warned me that it may take a little while since the baby is so little right now. And truly, I wasn't worried about it. I was laying on the table, and as she swiveled the doppler around we would hear a thrash or movement from the baby. She said it seemed like I had quite the active little baby in there! She finally found the heartbeat, and that sounded great.

I'm still continually amazed that 1. God made this all possible and 2. That our baby is thrashing around inside me. I haven't felt any movement yet, it's still quite early, but I look forward to that day.

I'm extremely thankful that I haven't been burdened with worry or anxiety about the baby. I remember lying in bed one night, I think it was prior to my first appointment, just worrying about everything that could go wrong. And as I worked my heart rate up and began to spiral into this world of fear, I stopped and prayed that God would simply take away my fear. All of it. This baby is His, and I am very aware that He chose everything about how this pregnancy would happen, when it would happen, and He knows what will happen from here on out.

And I can honestly say that was the last night I worried about this baby.

We are all set to find out the gender on July 26th (which should also be the day we close on our house!)! I've had a few people mention that "there are so few surprises in life. . .you should wait until the day you have the baby to find out!" And I think while that sounds fun, since this is our first and there is already going to be an onslaught of emotion and unknown that day, I'd like to already know whether I'm seeing our son or daughter for the first time. Plus, it will be a surprise anyway when we found out in July!

Well that's all I've got in big news from yesterday!

  2. I wanted to know the gender of the baby too. I'm positive that even with knowing the time of delivery will be very special and knowing the gender beforehand won't take away the uniqueness of it. Besides, I feel I have bonded with the baby a lot more since we found out. I understand the people who want to wait until the baby is born, but I'm just not one of those people :)

I'm very happy you haven't been anxious or feared for the baby. It was the right thing to do, to pray, like you did.

  3. I wanted to be surprised, but my hubs is a planner so he wanted to find out the gender. If we have a 2nd, I will insist on surprise the next time. Congrats!

  4. I am one who likes to know the sex too. In my opinion, it's a surprise no matter when you find out! And it's so fun. :)

  5. I have found out the baby's gender during both of my pregnancies. I think that was the defining moment when I really connected this little person growing inside me to that personal "my baby" feeling! It is so incredible. Excited for you and all the wonderful changes going on in your life. God bless you!

  6. Congrats on your baby! I just had my 5th and have found out with 3 of them and left the other 2 a surprise! It's all fun! If you are looking for a fun way to reveal the gender of your baby, my sister created a gender memory game called "What's The Bump". We revealed the gender of our 5th baby this way and it's super fun to do with friends and family! Check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/WhatsTheBump

We also did a cute video or our kids playing the game.

  9. Your prayer warms my heart. Your baby is His and he or she is already blessed because you know Him and your child will come to know Him. I went through a difficult time with my daughter having some problems in school and I remember praying right after she started 1st grade that she was His and He had a plan for her and did not want any harm to come to her. Peace washed over me and she has made wonderful progress and will be a Senior next year! Enjoy every moment of this amazing adventure called parenthood! By the way, I'm from NC and went to Meredith College. Love Raleigh and that area. We live in VA now.

  11. Congratulations on the new house! I feel like we are twins right now: I am 19 weeks pregnant, we find out the sex of the baby tomorrow and then close on OUR first house on Thursday! CRAZY!! It will be great to hear about you going through the process of everything! I am also excited about following your pins! We're in DC by the way! Yay for baby's and houses!

  12. Congrats on your house Kate!! What an exciting time for you and your husband. I remember those days well. You will enjoy making the house your home, and setting up the nursery. You will probably be feeling movement in the next 3-4 weeks, that is an awesome feeling. I am an ob-gyn nurse and never got tired of seeing pregnant bellies and hearing that heartbeat. Look forward to your adventures via your blog!!
    Sincerely,

  13. So exciting...so so exciting. What a great year 2013 is for you. Do you already have styles picked out for nursery? I had my daughter's planned before I knew we were having a girl. ;-)

  14. I totally agree - it's a surprise whether you find out during your pregnancy or wait until delivery!

  15. My baby's heartbeat is currently my favorite sound in the world :) We found out if it was a boy or girl as soon as we could. While I understand some people want the suspense, it's been wonderful to pray, shop, decorate and party (baby shower) knowing it's a boy.

At 18 weeks I started to feel him move... for me it was as if bubbles were popping in my lower belly. It was only after 23 or 24 weeks that I really felt movement. Now at 31 he wakes me up some nights :) It's sort of perfect (yes, annoying and hurts my stomach at times, but still perfect).

    Congrats on the house!

  16. Hi Kate! We also found out the gender of our baby via ultrasound. We believed that the day of his birth would be such a wonderful surprise on what he looked like, how big he was, how he sounded, etc., that we really wanted one surprise early! It in no way made the day of his birth any less surprising - lol!! It was so funny for us when we'd hear that from people, but to each their own and that was the best way for us. It also brought my husband closer to the experience while I was pregnant (especially in the beginning!) He started talking about him as "he this, he that" and bought little items for him if he'd be around town. Before the gender, it was just "the baby" or "sprout", so it really put more of a face on him for my husband and he could imagine our future with this little boy (or girl, if it had been a girl!) I'm glad you made the choice that was best for you guys. Good luck with everything, you deserve it all!

  19. Congratulations on all of the great things happening in your life. I just want you to know that you are serving as such a source of inspiration and strength for me right now. My husband and I are struggling to have a baby (trying for almost 2 years), and reading your posts makes me remember who is really leading my life and the future of our family. Thank you so much for sharing your faith and trust in God with us so we can add it to our constant reminders. I will keep praying for you, your baby, and your family! PS - we are closing on our first house on July 29th, so I can echo your excitement - I am already planning upgrades as well, although I am not sure my hubs is so excited about the ever-growing "honey do" list :) Have a blessed week!

  22. Kate, congratulations -- I am about 3 weeks behind you, due January 8th! First baby too, it's so exciting!!

  23. You are exactly right - it's a surprise whether you find out (as an example) now or in four months. We found out with both our girls and it felt so much more 'real' when I knew the gender. I was able to plan and organize both mentally and baby wise.
Congrats on all the wonderful things you've got happening! Enjoy this time. It's so fun!

  24. Congratulations on the new house and new baby!! It was a surprise with my first one and the other two I found out at the ultrasound. My kids are spaced so far apart (ages 25, 15 and 6) that it helped in preparing for their arrival, being I was starting over with each. To each their own, there is no right or wrong. :)

  25. Congrats! I think I am a week or so ahead of you with our first pregnancy and are building a house right now. We had an elective ultrasound over the weekend and had our parents, siblings, niece and nephew come and watch. It was so special finding out the gender with everyone, watching baby move and get hiccups, etc.

  26. I've always said "It will be just as much a surprise at 20 weeks as it would have been at 40 weeks." :-) We liked knowing our babies' genders.

  27. Very excited for you and your husband!

  28. We found out with our first 2. Since we already have a boy and a girl and my reasoning for finding out before was so I could be prepared we decided to wait with our 3rd and it has been a whole different experience. I don't regret not finding out this time around but I would have never been able to do it the first 2 times.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I also told people that I was equally surprised at 20 weeks as I was when he was born... but this way I had the boy clothes & room out of the way and could just enjoy HIM. Congrats- I hope for your sake that your wiggly little one cooperates. Mine was an acrobat in there and it took 3 ultrasounds to be able to confirm the gender. Have fun announcing your news & on the house! (PS My due date was july 26- so exciting:))

  30. I don't normally comment, but as a first time mommy like you, I just had to. First, congratulations! Second, I heard the same thing about there not being many surprises in life... but the way I looked at it was that the day I give birth, there's going to be so many emotions (and surprises as to what baby looks like and whatnot) that finding out the gender a little earlier doesn't take away from the surprise. I KNEW I was having a girl from the very beginning, so when we found out it was a boy, we were SHOCKED. :) Can't wait to hear what you guys are having (if you decide to share with us). Congrats again!

    ReplyDelete
  31. first of all - CONGRATULATIONS!! and secondly - i had to laugh at the 'so few surprises in life' comment...HA! i am constantly surprised by the things that come my way. this particular surprise will just be presented to you in the ultrasound room instead of the delivery room ;) so have no fear, there will be many more surprises (and blessings) in your journey...and i can't wait to hear all about them.

    1. Yes! Had to agree with this - the people that say "so few surprises in life" obviously haven't had life change their plans or something if gender at birth is their main source for getting surprised:) We found out on my son's birth day that he had Down syndrome (a jarring surprise at first of course, but he's the best thing that ever happened to us!) so I too laugh at people when they use that whole "few surprises" line. They have no idea:)

  32. I know people say it is a surprise, but I knew from my first ultrasound at 7 weeks that the little peanut was a boy. I just knew it. So when the technician told us that indeed we had a boy at the 20 week anatomy scan, it was more of an affirmation than a surprise. So do what you feel in your heart bc no one can tell you how YOU will feel at any particular moment, and you are right about the day the baby is born. You don't know how it is going to go. Hopefully it will go off without a hitch, but you just don't know. God has his plans for you two!

  35. I love that you aren't afraid to say "God" on your blog. So many people are so afraid of offending someone else by mentioning any sort of religion that He gets left out. He is the source of all our happiness. Good for you for knowing that and giving all the credit to Him. I love your blog and refer MANY of my hair clients to your site for good, solid, dependable, professional advise. Thanks! Congrats on the baby and the house! God is so good!

  36. I'm glad I read your post today (only wish I could have read it when I went in for my 12-week appointment to hear the heartbeat!!). I was a basket case when they couldn't find it!
I'm not a worry-wart by nature but ever since becoming pregnant I find that fear creeps up on me ALL the time!! (although now that I feel the baby move around and we recently saw him/her on the ultrasound screen, some of that fear has been erased.)
Anyway, I REALLY needed to be reminded that this child belongs to God. He knows the future of our baby and I need to trust Him for the outcome.
Thank you for your post - you have inspired me to pray for peace AND for God to take away ALL my fears.
Thank you!! (or maybe - thank you, Lord, for using Kate to speak to me!)
BTW - congrats on the new house! What an exciting 2013 for you and your family!

  37. I love that you handed over all your worries to God because He is ultimately in control. (((((hug)))))

    Congratulations on your new house!

As for the gender, I've had two babies and the ultrasound tech got it wrong BOTH times, so there is always room for surprises on delivery day! Ha ha ha. (Of course, that was 20 years ago and ultrasounds these days are phenomenal - first time I saw a 3-D ultrasound, I about fainted.)

So glad y'all will be in your new home when the baby gets here! Super excited for you!!

  40. Of course you should find out, with a new house you either want to decorate for a boy room or a girl room! Well that is what I used for an excuse as to why I needed to know what I was having! :-) I really wanted to either have a really girly room or a room really tailored to a boy, no in between room! LOL! You are a breathe of fresh air!!!

    1. Yes! People like to imply that if you don't wait until the birth that somehow it won't be a surprise or that the day will be less thrilling. Uh - - it will be a surprise no matter when you find out! And trust me, you don't need the surprise of boy/girl on delivery day to make the day more exciting or something - it will still be plenty exciting and nerve-wracking and thrilling if you find out gender before the birth.

  42. I have done it both ways, but I have to politely disagree. While yes, it is a surprise either way, it was a hugely emotional surprise when we found out the sex at the birth. Each birth was special, but not knowing took it to a whole other level I didn't expect. Having the ultrasound tech tell us during our appointment was no where close.

Love your ideas for the house. 2013 is shaping up to be one amazing year for you and your husband!

  43. We waited until birth to find out the sex of our baby (we had a boy in February). My husband and I both agreed early on in the pregnancy to wait and keep it a surprise, although I "knew" all along that it was a boy.

One of the nurses who was with us the entire time, stayed beyond her shift ending so she could be there was well. She said that it was a refreshing change to be there for a birth where the parents didn't know what they were having.

  44. We LOVED finding out the gender at 5 mos. with both of my children. After that point we called them by their names when we spoke about them and prayed for them. Both of our moms have expressed to me since then that they felt like it helped them "bond" along the way too, so I was happy to have blessed them in that way (even if one of them criticized our name when we shared it.) Oh well, I told her, it will take you about 5 seconds after that baby is born to have a totally new and happy association with that name!

  45. Plus, I was so sick and miserable during most of my pregnancy that I felt that I deserved a 20 wk. pickmeup of knowing the gender. At 40 wks I would get the baby, I needed something to be excited about at the mid way point. It really was fun to know and share the news with people!

  46. So exciting!!! It seems like we're due close to the same time. I'll be 15 weeks on Saturday, due December 21st or so. We find out the gender on July 30th! So exciting!

  47. Congratulations on your home! We moved in to our home in March of 2011 and had so many plans and ideas that are still being worked out - needless to say our plans changed when we found out we are having our first baby as well! I am only 12 weeks along so we have plenty of time to get the nursery set up. The nursery right now is our dumping ground/catch all so we definitely have a lot to do. We are going to find out the gender too. I think it would be really cool to wait until the baby is born but at the same time it makes it really hard to shop and prepare. I can't wait to find out what we're having. Maybe we'll hold the surprise for birth the second time around. =]

  48. Congratulations on your first home! You and your husband are on such an exciting journey of firsts and major life changes.

As your pregnancy progresses, you will find that pregnancy brings out the unsolicited and unwanted opinions of others...regardless of what you want or the choices you make. Having a relaxed attitude helps and it will help once your body starts changing. Its an awesome and powerful thing to know that your body is capable of such a miracle.

We are choosing to not find out the gender of our baby due in early August and people cannot stand it! I don't know how many women have given me their gender prediction with their accuracy rate immediately after I told them we were going to be surprised. You know what is right for you and your baby and that is all that matters!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh man, I agree with you. It's a surprise no matter when you find out, and at least if you find out as soon as you can, you can plan a little better for his/her arrival. Plus, I feel like if I can give them a name asap, then I get to start the bonding process a little sooner. So glad things are progressing well!

  51. We close on our first home on the 26th as well! So exciting. I wouldn't be surprised if you begin to feel those movements in the next couple of weeks. I was about 16 weeks when I began to feel those first pokes. We're totally "Team Green" and not finding out the gender until the birth, but it has nothing to do with making it a surprise (I never understood that logic either...waiting is more of a lesson in patience than in creating a surprise). We just wanted to keep things simple in terms of baby prep and not knowing the gender has helped us to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Congratulations on the house! So many exciting changes. Honestly nowadays it's hard to even buy gender-neutral things since so many people find out the sex. Not a good reason to find out necessarily, but it will make shopping easier ;) It helps me visualize a healthy baby, too, to know the sex & be able to think about all the fun things I'll get to do/experience with a sweet little boy.

  56. It's not THAT early, little momma! You'll be feeling that baby moving in just a few short weeks (I was 16 weeks with my second daughter when I felt her little kicks in there). Also, I understand wanting to find out the sex. Who wants to buy nothing but uni-sex clothing for the entirety of their pregnancy? Although, I guess some do. Regardless, I'd just like to have everything ready for when the baby arrives. That way, I'm not a brand new mommy, trying to recover, and worrying about finally being able to purchase that pink, striped onsie!

  58. I completely agree with you finding out your first baby's gender! That's exactly why we did it, I just felt like I wanted to be as prepared as possible and knowing the gender was part of that. We didn't find out with our second and I hated it! My sister-in-law didn't find out with any of her 4 but it's not for me! I will definitely find out with our next baby if we are blessed with more. You're right, it will be a surprise in July.

  62. I totally agree w/ you here: there is already going to be an onslaught of emotion and unknown that day, I'd like to already know whether I'm seeing our son or daughter for the first time. Plus, it will be a surprise anyway when we found out in July!

I felt the same way! It's already a surprise when you find out! You don't get to pick either way. And there is already SO MUCH going on, so much emotion, first - is the baby okay!, second - what does the baby look like (hair, eyes, face, nose, etc...), third - the baby's name, on and on, etc... I also wanted to know my child's gender. I'm also a huge planner so I wanted to plan and decorate her nursery. Some of my friends that didn't find out the gender didn't have time after their baby was born to work on the nursery it's still practically empty 9 months later! Not for me, but to each their own. ;)

And congratulations on the house!! Or should I say home?!?! Purchasing a home has been one of the most rewarding experiences for me. I'm such a proud owner. Yay for decorating! I stayed up LATE so many nights before we closed thinking of everything I wanted to do! I saved a list and just kept adding, and we've done a TON but we have a long way to go :)

You have 2 human hearts inside of you right now! 2 hearts! It blows my mind everytime! Pregnancy was one experience that completely changed and strengthened my faith in the lord like none other. I'll be praying you have a similar experience. Also we have found out the gender twice and was surprised for baby #3 and to be honest we both agreed that we liked finding out more! There is so much excitment when the baby finally arrives that I found I didn't even care about the gender where as finding out at 20 weeks is a fun little surprise half way through your pregnancy :-)

Just a few random thoughts, we have 3 kids (a 3 year old son, 18mo daughter and 3mo daughter)...everytime we hear the heartbeat for the first time at the midwives I am always completely in awe of how perfectly God created woman's body to carry pregnancy.

  77. Congratulations! That is so wonderful to be moving into a home for the first time. Looks like you will close and find out your baby's sex the day after my birthday. :-) I think it is totally up to the individual couple whether they find out. We chose not to with both of ours. It was right for us. Anyway, so excited for you on all fronts. Bless you!
