Wen : my experience and thoughts

next
A slouchy tee : day to evening

The great Wen-speriment, or so I called it.

A question that I’m asked over and over again is “What do you think about Wen?”. I’d answer based on my limited experience using it on a single client who brings her Wen with her to every appointment. And for her, it works very well. I’ve enjoyed the aroma of it, and the consistency. I understood the concept behind the product.

Oftentimes we “over-shampoo” due to habit. Shampooing the hair is really only intended for cleaning off the scalp and hair, and usually we don’t “dirty-up” our heads enough in 1 day to require a fresh shampoo. It’s better for your hair to go a day or two between shampooing to allow your heads’ natural ability to produce oil to operate. If you cannot go a day between shampooing, like me, just make sure you are using a great conditioner. And, even though conditioner is mainly needed from mid-shaft to ends, every once in awhile spread it from roots to tips to condition the entire hair shaft.

I thought it would only be fair if I tried Wen myself in order to form an accurate opinion of it. So, I ordered it online a few weeks ago, and shortly thereafter a box containing the cleansing conditioner as well as a few other accessory products arrived. I also noted that upon my purchase of Wen online, I was automatically signed up to receive it every 90 days. I despise when companies automatically sign you up for a subscription service. I made a mental note to cancel the subscription when I was finished reviewing it.

A little background: I would describe my hair as dry, damaged, and heavily colored. My scalp is dry, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a hint of oil at my roots. So, I assumed Wen would be quite perfect for my texture. I didn’t have to worry about my hair being oily, since I’ve never struggled with that before.

Day 1: I washed my hair twice with Wen. I applied 16 pumps of the product all over my wet hair, ran my fingers through it to evenly distribute, and let it sit for a few minutes. Next I stuck my head under the shower to add a little water to it. Then I scrubbed the product around using the pads of my fingers to “clean” my scalp and roots. I rinsed well and then repeated.

I applied Aquage Uplifting Foam, like usual, to my scalp. During the blow dry, I noticed that my ends seemed extra dry. This didn’t’ surprise me. I was focused on cleaning the product out of my scalp during the final rinse so I didn’t leave enough behind to really smooth down my dry ends. A smoothing product would have remedied this, but I was letting Wen to all of the work.

Once my hair was dry, I brushed through it a final time and thought, “Well, not bad.” Other than my dry ends, everything looked fine. My hair cooperated when I styled it, and lasted throughout the day like always.

Day 2: I repeated the same process from Day 1, but didn’t rinse quite as much product out in an effort to keep my ends hydrated.

I applied my root lifter, and began to blow my hair dry. I noticed that it felt a little bit like there was a layer of product on my hair, but nothing that was too terrible. I wasn’t able to achieve as much volume that day when styling, and also noticed a bit of static electricity. Otherwise, everything else was pretty normal. Roots looked clean, ends were still slightly dry, and hair looked fine.

Day 3: I repeated the same process from Day 1. My hair felt caked on with product in the shower, but I followed the steps and did only what I was instructed to do from the directions on the bottle.

I applied my root lifter and began to blow-dry. I noticed more “pull” than usually as I brushed through my hair. As if I was brushing through really heavy/knotty hair. I assumed it was due to the now 3 days of product that hadn’t been “traditionally” cleaned off my scalp and hair.

My hair was heavy, and while it didn’t look oily, it felt like there was a layer of waxy residue all over it. I styled as usual and it went right into a ponytail. It was weighed down and I had to get it off my shoulders.

By the end of Day 3 my scalp became a bit itchy, and I was frustrated with the feeling of my hair.

So, on Day 4, I relapsed into my old ways. I shampoo’d my hair with Purology Hydrate, and conditioned with the coordinating conditioner. It was luxurious. I felt like the models in the “Herbal Essences” commercials. I’ve never enjoyed shampooing my hair quite like I did that say.

I applied my root lifter, blew it dry, and my hair styled like a dream.

So, what do I think of Wen

I’m not a fan. I don’t think it’s for everyone. I don’t think it’s a great product for those of us who use a few styling products on a daily basis. I found that it’s quite heavy too.

If you use it and like it, keep using it! I don’t think you need to avoid it (it doesn’t do bad things to your hair), I simply wasn’t impressed with it.

Some may argue that I didn’t give it a long enough chance to work. While that may be true, it wasn’t worth a few annoying and itchy hair/scalp days to push through it. Plus, that rate at which product was building up on my hair shaft was not enjoyable.

However, I do think it can be an option for women, or men, who have normal, slightly dry, or coarse hair without a ton of oil production at their roots. And also who don’t use a lot of styling products in their hair.

My client who faithfully brings her Wen product with her is a perfect example of a successful Wen user.

If you want to try it, try it. If you are on the fence, I’d say don’t bother.

Be aware that you are automatically subscribed to receive product every 90 days if you buy online. You can also find Wen products at Sephora. Wen does offer a money back guarantee, and you can read all the details about that here.

It’s nearly impossible to figure out how to cancel your Wen subscription on the website. This is not a surprise to me. I canceled my subscription easily by accessing the “live chat” option at the bottom of the main webpage, and it was completely harmless. The live chat option is available 24/7.
Q & A (from my Facebook page)
1. Does it make your hair fall out?
I can’t speak to this since it didn’t happen to me, but I can’t imagine that Wen makes your hair fall out. It’s normal to loose some amount of hair on a daily basis and perhaps users who thought their hair was falling out just became more aware of otherwise normal hair loss.
2. Does it clean your hair?
Yes, but very lightly. The whole concept is that it won’t overly clean your hair, and that users only need a gentle, conditioning cleanse. Your natural hair oil, or dryness, will determine how clean it feels to you.
3. Can I still go 2-3 days between shampooing when I use Wen?
You’ll likely have a more difficult time going longer between shampoo’s since your hair will not be squeaky clean to begin with, but the idea is that it will balance out your scalps oil production over time.

*Wen has no idea who I am, I purchased this product for myself, and this review is simply my opinion.

Kate, great, thorough review.

I caved to the hype a few years ago with their pumpkin ginger fall scent. I like but don’t love. I also have a huge bottle of the 613 and use that for the first two weeks after coloring.

In my opinion, it is crazy expensive AND takes a lot of time in the shower while water is just wasting money down the drain. The 613 requires hair to be cold wet and rinse with cold water so I am a contortionist in the shower trying to keep my body away from the freezing cold water while it rinses. BUT I do think it helps my color last as red usually just rinses away so quickly.

Your review verbalized some things I felt about it but didn’t know how to say. Yes, the itchy scalp!

Ok, WEN has a learning curve. When I 1st started using it I would use the 8 pumps per section (sometimes more). The big secret is that you really need to run water over your head for AT LEAST 5 mins before you put anything in it!!! Then start at the nape of neck with the 8 pumps and really work that stuff in. I mean massage it like a husband trying to get some nookie..lol.. Should take you a few minutes. Then move on to the sides, several pumps for each side. And again, really work the product in. Finally, go for the front, crown area. I use more than 8 pumps here and really, really work it in. I probably spend 4 or 5 mins on just this area.
It is not a fast process like in the commercials..lol.. Make sure you apply a ton to the ends of your hair. I leave mine on during the rest of my bath, then rinse it for like 5 or 10 mins. Yeah, I know. It takes F O R E V E R!!! But I really liked the results. I follow it up with the leave in creme, and I use more than it seems like you should. Don’t apply near the roots.
If you use a silicone based styling product, or if you use a lot of products, you will NOT like WEN!!! It cannot get all the product off the hair shafts/ends and you will end up with weighted down hair.
By the way, you can Co-Wash with most regular ol’ conditioners. The secret is to spend a lot of time rinsing in the beginning and at the end.
About once a week I just ‘co-wash’ (wash w/ conditioner..lol..)I don’t use expensive products or anything, usually go old Aussie 3 minute miracle when I do this. Works great!
Just my 2 cents worth 🙂

Nice process description!
I am a ‘wen girl’ had oily scalp & dry ends but now pretty ‘normal’ as the seasons/hormones change so does the texture of my hair. I love my cleansing routine and take wen with me to hair salon & travel.

I came looking for reviews and boy what a wake up call. I was about to buy it, but from heavily weighed hair to scams, no thanks! Heavy hair products are cheap junk to me, Bead hair shampoo is a good example of gunk in your hair. Also, why go through so much hassle to wash your hair? Wash rinse condition and be done. If you want squeaky clean hair buy a clarifying shampoo wash your hair 3 times or until you feel no gunk in your hair. Then you know your hair is squeaky clean and not full of product which it should not have anyway.

It is really not that bad. My hair has never been weighed down unless I didn’t properly rince it. I also don’t fid it takes more time than shampooing and conditioning because either way you have to work those in your hair as well. I use products, sometimes multiple ones and have always been able to wash it out, not sure if people are not using enough or not rinsing enough but it isn’t very difficult.

The problem with certain products is that it strips your hair and scalp so if that isn’t a concern of yours then who cares?

You have to remember that everyone has different hair
I’ve tried wen. The process was uncomfortable anade my hair feel heavy and gross. May as well have used Pantene pro v to be honest but, there are people who love the product and it works for them. To suggest that one product will work for everyone with any type of hair is kid of irresponsible honestly. But, they want to sell the product.

Libby says · 02.27.15

According to Chaz Dean, the ONLY way WEN works properly is to use the entire system from cleanser, next styling cream in shower & then volumizing mist & WEN mousse. Of course, he “suggests” using WEN oils on your scalp overnite twice a week & Re-moist conditioner twice a week. There’s also a Replenishing Treatment Spray to add moisture & revive 2nd day hair. If you’ve ever priced ALL these products, to properly use the WEN system & get started is hundreds of dollars. I fell into the trap & after a year, started wondering why my curly hair was flat & lifeless. WEN has silicones in ALL its products & the cleanser can not remove the build up. Save your money!!! Use salon or drugstore products. I now have springy curls back using my drugstore styling products & a sulfate free shampoo/conditioner to remove them.

I used all the products as instructed initially. Not impressed. Some seemed super cheap. Used the shampoo for several months without all the others and it just kept building up on my hair until it felt like I hardly had any hair on my head. Finally, I completely cleansed it from my hair with vinegar rinse and deep cleansing shampoo. My hair was back! IMO way too expensive. The best thing about it are the scents. I truly believe these “wen girls” are extremely impressionable and want to “belong” and have talked themselves into it being a great product. Just my opinion. I’m sure there are exceptions.

Amen! I am going to try the vinegar and maybe a clarifying shampoo, and start doing some deep overnight conditioning….thank you!

Tara says · 08.26.15

The stupid part about all those extra products is that the infomercial promotes WEN as something that is supposed to eliminate the need for all those other products. I got some Hair One at Sally’s and it was ok. It didn’t transform my hair, but it did get it clean, as long as I didn’t go too many days between washes (and I consider my scalp oily. Had to use a lot of product though). I’ve also used Tresseme silicone free formula as a cleansing conditioner, and it was ok too. I don’t use many styling products. I’ve since gone back to regular shampoo because it’s faster, but I like the idea of alternating between them as a way of cutting back on harsh lathering agents, but having the benefit of routinely using shampoo a couple times a week to ensure product or oil doesn’t build up over time.

stina says · 01.27.16

Amen! Definitely not for curly hair in my opinion. Thankfully, when I tried it, I had a free trial sized bottle. I know within the first use if I like a product or not and this I did not like on my hair

Libby, I know what you mean about your curls! Not only did (still do almost a year later) I have the severe hair loss, but my hair, which I have never in my life had to shampoo more that maybe 2 times weekly, seemed to grow oily within a day and a half, with absolutely no curl, just limp, semi-waves. I know that none of this could be due to the use of WEN, but I have seen a lot of pictures, and read a lot of stories from other people about the sudden hair loss, and change of the hair they “used” to have, and even just stopping the use of the product, it is taking them a very long time to stop the hair loss. Thanks for sharing!

Exactly!! I agree. People seem to be using too much, Wen!! I myself LOVE the product! Saves my color & makes my natural curls very easy to work with. Also, negative comments. Nobody uses the leave in on ends, or spray to finish!!

Ok first you dont need to use as much as is directed. I do 5-7 pumps directly to the roots and add in a little water at a time to work it up, then rinse out totally, then add back 2 pumps and put it up to condition while I do everything else in the shower, then rinse it out for 5 full seconds (the whole one one thousand, two one thousand bit) which leaves some still in and put one pump directly to the ends of my hair (I have long hair) and whats left in my hands around my crown for flyaways.

It definitely takes a little playing around with it to get the right routine down for your hair. If you leave too much in or dont use enough product to rinse off the excess oil your hair will feel heavy and waxy. If you dont leave enough in at the ends your hair will not feel conditioned enough. But let me tell you when you get it right, its heaven and your hair is perfect.

When you dont over wash your hair it doesnt remove ALL the oil on your scalp, and your scalp gets the message and starts to produce less oil which in turn means you dont have to wash it as often. Using Wen I only have to wash every 3-4 days now. First two days look great down and second two are up do days.

Yes!!!!!!!!! I used to have a really itchy scalp and no more! I love it too. I don’t understand how people seem to struggle so much with it. I suppose because its a new concept and we annot use old ways with it. I don’t even have all of their products and it still works!

My hair is 100 grey now, but i still color it brunette. It is so dry. I never needed conditioners until my hair turned grey and changed texture. Now it seems i can’t get enough conditioner. Anyway, back to Wen… I absolutely love the way it made my hair look, the first two days, but then my hair looked greasy. I kept following the directions, but instead of shampooing my hair twice a week, i now have to shampoo it every other day with Wen. I am finding it makes my scalp itch like crazy. I make sure to take time to rinse it out also. So I’m going to stop using it. I tend to have an oily scalp, and certain shampoos and conditioners make my scalp itch to begin with. I was hoping that wouldn’t be the case with Wen.

I tried Wen and I am not impressed with the product at all. First of all, why pay $39 every month for a one month supply when you can just purchase shampoo for cheaper.I found the product never washed out of my hair and my hair felt heavy as some posting have stated. I will never order this product again. Just my 2 cents

Reply

Well, just my 2 cents, WEN doesn’t charge you $39 every month. In the Basic kit, it’s only $29.95+ free shipping and gives you a bottle of WEN Cleansing Conditioner, a trial size 613 Cleansing Conditioner, their Anti-Frizz styling creme, and a free gift for you to pick out. And also some advice to you would be even if it takes you longer, just make sure your scalp is well rinsed. And another thing is, you don’t have to pay EVERY month, you can happily change the shipping! 🙂

Also, read the fine print. It states that in 30 days you will receive another kit with a larger size of the Wen product plus other stuff every and every 90 days thereafter you will receive a replenished supply. For this your credit card will be charged $39.99 EVERY MONTH. So Theresa was accurate in her post.

I experienced poor outcomes and found the outcomes to be overrated. And returning is expensive and not easy to do. Very costly product with poor results.

Nancy says · 03.25.15

I debated using Wen, I have very fine and thin hair and read complaints about hair breakage. Overal my hair was already in good shape, I generally wash it daily but only blow dry about once a week, since for work it is always in a pony tail. I was really leary about trying it until I read an online post where they used the product for 5 weeks, and mentioned the good and the bad about the product. Almost everything I had read up to that point was negative about the tv infomercial (not the product) or on hair breakage. So I purchased it through QVC since I could purchase it without the auto enroll / auto shipment. I’ve been using the product for just over 2 weeks and I have to say, so far, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. As for an itchy scalp, none of that, I do have a tingly sensation for just a few minutes while I’m shampooing, but once it is rinsed out (which I do with cool water NOT cold) the tingling is gone. To me the feeling was less intense than if I shampood with a dandruff shampoo. I am down to shampooing my hair twice a week. I am in Florida, the heat, the humidity, sweat and oils, build up in your hair quickly. I found with WEN I can go longer between shampoos, my hair feels great and styles better (when I do style it), and I no longer need a curling iron/flat iron or any other styling wand to get may hair to the style I want. I use 1/2 a pump or less in my hair only on the ends at the end of the shower and only on the days I wash my hair in the shower. I still only blow dry once a week or special occasions. I shower daily and always wet my hair between shampoos, but that’s it. Yes the product costs more, but I don’t have shampoo, conditioner, a moisturizer afterwards. Plus because I can go longer between shampooing, I think in the long run it will actually cost me less. Best of all, I have LESS hair loss not more!!! I got my hair cut and highlighted about 3 weeks before using Wen, it feels silky smoothe like I just got a fresh cut. Yes, it has just been over 2 weeks, but so far I am a WEN believer. If you want to try it, I would say purchase it through QVC. I am not a person who purchases lots of tv products, but I felt more comfortable ordering through them, after hearing about all the problems with auto shipments. For me, so far, I love the product but I do make sure that I thoroughly rinse the product out of my hair and only put a small amount back in the ends of my hair at the end of the shower.

I also purchase through QVC and love it. MY fav scents/formulas are lavender, sweet almond mint, tea tree, tuscan pear and Six/Thirteen I would buy in a perfume, it’s intoxicatingly good. The only one I ever returned was the fall apple spice, it was too sweet and gross. I don’t particularly like the Fig scent, however, my 2.5 y.o. daughter has curls and little patience for getting her hair washed. I’ve been using the fig on her and she gets way less tangles, and I only need 1 step instead of shampoo plus conditioning (she hates getting rinsed).

I Just started using Wen recently. I find it takes probably the same time it did to shampoo my hair…maybe less. I also followed the directions…something I think many are NOT doing. So far i only have cleansed my hair on Sundays…one entire week in between. The idea behind it is that your hair will be healthier as the natural oils will not be stripped away and you can go LONGER in between cleanings. I love it so far. My baby fine hair is squeaky clean, not weighed down…no build up..my head does not itch like it did with shampoo it appears to be shinier and it smells great. I ONLY buy the conditioning cleaner…nothing else. I have never heard Chaz say you have to buy the other products in order for the cleanser to work. I rinse my hair, take HALF of the needed amount in my hands…rub together apply it to my hair. Then I splash a bit of water on BEFORE I work it in. I smooth it in a bit and I comb it through as if I was brushing my hair, leave it sit as I wash my body then rinse with COOL NOT freezing COLD ( as one person implied) water. I repeat with the balance of the recommended amount and rinse well just as I would soap. I take 1/2 pump rub it in my hands and apply to my soaking wet hair. work it in…add a splash or two of water and I am done. squeaky clean…without the lather.

I just received mine and have only used it once. But I did notice a big difference in my hair especially when I woke up in the morning. I did read the directions, which based on the number of pumps some people use, I think they must have missed the fact that if you wash it twice you use half the pumps.

My scalp is less itchy and my hair looks much better on day two. I found this site because I am wondering how often to use the product. I still have no idea but I’m thinking two or three times a week.

Buying through guthy-renker is what is causing people problems with auto-ship. Wen is sold through them as ONE way to obtain it. The best way to buy it is through QVC. They have great prices, easy pay, and money-back guarantee. Chaz visits every so often and it is always available even if he is not there. It does work and yes, it is more expensive. You have to wash twice and in soaking wet hair put back in a quarter size pump (long hair)-twisting and then rake fingers through top. You do not have to wash your hair every 2 days.

Wen Cucumber Aloe is recommended for those who have oily scalp/hair issues .Before buying any Wen I called his salon to find out which one was best for my thinning, dry color treated hair and that was 8 or 9 yrs ago and several gallons of assorted Wen because every family member has a favorite .It works when you find a couple of your favorites that you can use together

I have never used Wen products so I have no comment on this, but they are owned by Guthy Renker – the same people who own ProActiv (who also does the whole automatic renewal every 90 days). I tried to cancel my ProActiv account – which I was told was exactly what happened by the customer service person – then found out they only removed my credit card number from the account, then when they couldn’t charge me for my automatic renewal – 6 months later (after I had no clue and hadn’t received anything from them in the mail) I got a collections letter. I have never had this happen before so I panicked. Then I got angry and became one of those people I said I never would be – a conspiracy theorist, HAHA – and said I would shout from the roof tops to never buy from Guthy Renker. (Google- Guthy Renker and collections or ProActiv scam – it happened A LOT). Its crazy they can do this. OK, off my soap box, just want to SAVE people from the embarassment of thinking they ruined perfect credit for hair or acne wash!

WEN is not owned by Guthy Renker as far as I know. Chaz Deen is simply partnered with them. He also sells his product through QVC and you don’t have to do the auto sign up. You also get better value that way.

I don’t use it currently but have in the past and liked it. Chaz’s purpose with the product is to get us to stop using all of hair styling products.

Just at the roots, and have always had a nice thick head of hair, and now I can actually see spots at the crown that look like they are going bald….it is very depressing to me. Every woman, and heck, men too, know our hair is our crowning glory no matter what type we have, and it is a huge blow to my self esteem to see this happening to my hair! I just ordered the $29 special. I had seen in the terms that you will get automatic shipments each month. So I went to the online chat to cancel this. They informed they could not do that via online chat. Confusing, cause others above said they were able to do that. So I had to call and cancel that. We shall see if it works. I think it is a terrible practice for these companies to automatically enroll you into a program when you are just trying it for the first time.

I had a negative experience with this company, too. I ordered the trial size product(s). I was informed that other shipments would be sent to me in every three months. However, in less than 2 months, I received the 2nd shipment. I emailed/called the company to cancel the rest of the orders. I got the “3rd degree” from female employee. In the meantime, another order arrived with MANY products that I could not use in a lifetime. Called again and was told I was going to be billed $68.00+ for these items. I complained that the items were not ordered and how (very) unhappy I was with them. The company charged my bank card anyway.

I actually caved too and ordered their deluxe kit online and i never received anything. I wait about 3 weeks to a month and still nothing. So i call them and ask them what the hell is going on with my order, right? They finally tell me that one of the things that came in the kit was out of stock. They suggest i call them back a few days later if i dont receive an email stating the kit was shipped. It didnt ship so i call back the Tuesday after (january 28th), and asks whats going on again. They then proceed to tell me that my whole order in on backorder and wont be shipped until its back in stock again. I ask them how long will it take before its back in stock and they say roughly about 10 days. I tell them that they have wasted my precious time making me wait almost a month to tell me all this so i cancel my order. I have been emailing them consistantly to get refunded and they still give me the run around with their full of crap excuses! I mean now they are saying that in order for them to credit me i have to fax them my bank statement with my order number and home address. I know they are scamming me out of 40$ and even if my bank is investigating they still are trying to convince me im wrong. That they never received my money and that there was an authorisation hold or preauthorization on my card and yet… My 40$ i spent to order their product online is still missing.

Anyway all i can suggest to people is not to order from them. They scam people out of hard earned cash and as much as it pains me to say this they are obviously doing a damn good job at it.

So sorry for your misfortune. This has happened to me with so many mail order stuff I have ordered. Money out of account, no merchandise, runaround excuses, rudeness, and ultimately you still don’t get all of your refund after cancelling. They always have some fee or another for getting a last few dollars. Pigsss!!!!!

I ordered WEN and am completely impressed. I got it within three days. The mail person apologized cause it was wet and wrapped in plastic. So I opened it up and I think that two small products were missing so I called and as soon as I told them what happen right then and there they have ordered me another one with no charge. Fast just like THAT. My hair feels great. I have been using expensive stuff from the saloon and still my hair was nit conditioned enough. And I washed my hair with this..which isn’t hard just put it in like you would any other conditioner. My hsir hasn’t ever felt as good and my daughter who is half black half white worked amazing on her TOO. So I think you guys need to call back or something the two ppl who helped me werr amazing and sweet and had not asked questions as soon as I told them what happen they apologized and are sending a new product.

And while we are on the subject, NEVER buy those 3 magazine subscriptions they offer at the end of a lot of internet shopping sites. They continue to charge you, the phone number is bogus–no one answers, and the magazine companies tell you they have nothing to do with it and cannot stop them. I wasted so much money trying to get them to stop billing me!

Wen is not owned by Gunthy Renker. He does use them to promote his product via an infomercial, but the product is owned by Chaz Dean. I would only recommend purchasing from his website or from QVC. You buy what you want without getting sucked into the auto delivery mayhem that Gunthy Renker offers. QVC has many special kits that are made more affordable by offering easy pay options.

Wen is absolutely wonderful at preserving color, but it is so dang expensive that in the end, you’re not really saving any money on color treatments. I loved Wen when my hair was recovering from a semi-traumatic highlighting experience, but now that my hair is healthy again, I don’t see the point. It takes approximately 12 years to use and you can go through a $50 bottle in less than three weeks if your hair is even moderately long. Redken products clean my hair off better, hydrate well, and are less than half the price! Overall, a great review! Thanks!

P.S.: Girl, your hair has been looking GREAT lately! So much bounce and body. I love it!

I’d love to know what shampoo is out there that will be beneficial for oily hair. I’d LOVE to be able to skip a day of shampooing without looking like an Exxon oil spill. I have fine but thick straight hair. I thought of trying Wen but I was afraid it wouldn’t be right for a naturally oily scalp.
I wash my hair at night and I do use dry shampoo in the morning and it’s still greasy looking by 6 pm. And I have tried about 5 dry shampoos – Psst and Kenra among the best of them that work well for me.

Reply
rosanne says · 04.29.13

I, too, am unable to go more than 24 hours between shampoos due to excessive oily hair. I also have the same fine but thick straight(ish) hair – not completely straight but also won’t hold a curl for more than two hours unless massive amounts of products are used.

I do prefer to shower in the AM as opposed to sleeping on it because I tend to sweat as I sleep and that starts that oil early. Psst dry shampoo is in the rotation for occasional days but I generally don’t like the way it feels on my head though it is probably the best of the 6 or so dry shampoos I’ve tried.

I would LOVE to find a mix of products that gives me that gorgeous volume and shine but also allows me to go 2 days between shampoos. That might actually be a life changing event in terms of the extra time it would grant me.

Reply
Sophia Varnam says · 04.29.13

I have fine and think straight(ish) hair as well (and I’m blonde on top of that). About 2 years ago I started to train my hair to be able to skip a day or two between shampoos because I was tired of spending so much time on it. At first, I started with only skipping 1 or 2 days per week. It took about 2-3 months before my hair didn’t look super greasy (even with dry shampoo) during the days I skipped. Luckily for me at the time, I was working a fast-food restaurant where we were required to wear hats, so I could cover up easily. I started skipping days more regularly, even skipping 2 days at time if I could (like on a Saturday where I knew I was going to be home all day cleaning). I use dry shampoo on the days I skip. My favorite has been BedHead Rockaholic Dirty Secret, but I recently tried KMS Hair Play and really love that too. Your hair really has to adjust to not being washed every day, and then the oil production will slow down.

I was going to say the same thing as Sophia. I have A LOT of fine hair, that has always been prone to oiliness. A couple of years ago I started trying to “train” my hair. I would skip every other day and just pull it in a pony tail if it was exceptionally bad. I’m now at the point where I wash my hair 2-3 times a week, at most, and my hair has never been healthier. It sucks when you first start, and I have found that if I have to wash it several days in a row for one reason or another I have to re-train it, but it’s so worth it!

I too have oily hair. I have found that the more I shampoo my hair, the more oil it products. I would have finally gotten to where I can wash my hair 2x a week. It was painful in the beginning but I pushed through the itchy scalp and oily hair. Just keep reducing the amount of time between washes and brush your hair from scalp to end. It will be worth the pain in the beginning because you will be able to increase the time between washes.

My scalp is more on the oily side. I tried Wen about a year ago and I thought my hair felt even more oily. I experienced the same build up feeling you talked about. I also developed bumps all over my forehead. Once I noticed Wen was irritating my skin, I discontinued use and called to cancel. The costumer service rep was great and cancelling was simple.

Personally, Wen didn’t work for me. But I also feel like I need to wash mY hair everyday and I style with product pretty regularly. Its great to know a professionals opinion! Thanks!

I love my wen, but I only use it 2 times a week and I don’t use the ‘recommended amount’ because I think it’s too much product. I use very little of it actually, maybe 3 or 4 pumps total. Probably not even that much. But I alternate between the Wen and another all natural shampoo product from Lush.

The best way to purchase it is through the QVC website. No automatic sign up and guaranteed money back if you don’t like it. I agree with lots of you…like it, but not sure I love it. I alternate a few days with WEN and a day with regular shampoo/conditioner. I definitely can go up to two days without washing when I use WEN, but like Kate said, I do not use much product. It is a very interesting concept.

I wanted to love it … but didn’t.

Ironically I just got a small bottle of wen almond mint. I was placing an order for some other items on amazon, I added the wen at the end of the order and essentially got it for free. I usually shampoo my hair every 2-3 days with a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. I have shoulder length hair, I used 12 pumps as soon as I got in the shower and let it sit till the end. I am now currently on day 3 without shampooing, my hair, so far, feels great. I also recently purchased the Oscar blandi hair lift mousse, I put a small amount of that in my hair after I used the wen and I still have nice volume 3 days later. After only using wen once my review will probably change in the future, I probably won’t use wen exclusively so we will see what the future holds. I am a huge fan of using coconut oil in my hair for a nice conditioning treatment too!
I am in love with the Oscar blandi, I never use any products in my hair but I thought I would give it a try, so glad I did. Thanks Kate!

I like Wen, but I use it only a few times a year. My mother in law uses it because most shampoos cause a breakout to her scalp, and this is mild enough to cleanse her hair without it becoming broken out.

I usually use conditioner to shave my legs but was out, so I used my Wen instead, softest skin after shaving ever!

Is the sweet almond mint (in the photo) the exact kind that you used? I’m just curious – as there is a tea tree formula that is for dry scalp. I’ve been thinking of trying it because I struggle with dry scalp constantly and haven’t found anything that works well to clear it up.

It does take some extra time…but I do my hair first in the shower then wash shave whatever and rinse..I dont do mine twice..but I do use 4 pumps to each section of my hair..after rinsing and still in the shower I add 1 pump of 613 or my fig or pomegranate rub in my hands and add while still dripping wet to the ends of my hair. After getting out I add 2pumps of styling cream..comb through and I just received the mouse I use that and then blow dry when almost dry and add finishing spray and I am good to go…Love it…My color has stayed in so much longer..In fact this is my 4th month and I just cancelled my color appointment and rescheduled it for later because I didnt have hardly any root’s that needed touched up because color got washed away. Everyone is different I have friends that said it was heavy…but they weren’t using correct amount either…So I think everyone needs to try for them self…I am hooked…

She can only thank me because I prayed for it (I have terrible hair). Her scalp was dry so we tried the Wen. It left her hair lifeless and oily. So we switched to every 4th or 5th shampoo – the same thing. The scent is great and I think Chaz Dean is just adorable and kind, but I am not a fan of the products. My daughter have the hair refreshing spray and she likes it – all scents. Thanks for the review(: Susan

I have been using Wen for about a year and half. I only shampoo twice a week and I use the after shampoo moisturizer on my ends. I have had no problem. I do have to say I agree with the automatic subscription. I hated that part. I have so much product at my house that I don’t need shampoo for about a year. When I am done with what I have at the house now, I am going to try the no-poo method. Most of this has to do with no un-known ingredients. Going as pure as possible but why does it always seem to cost more. That is why I will experiment with no-poo. I have heard great things about it.

Some formulas seem to work better than others. I tried the Sweet Almond Mint first and HATED it. It didn’t do anything for my hair and made my scalp itch something awful. But I absolutely love the seasonal scent, Summer Mango Coconut. It’s just too darn expensive. You can buy it from QVC without the subscription. You can even find a lot of it on eBay.

Heather says · 04.29.13

I’ve tried both sweet almond mint and the tea tree WEN. For those of you who don’t want to sign up for the auto ship nightmare you can buy single bottles from amazon.com. the sweet almond mint is nice, and I only had to use 10 pumps to clean my hair. The tea tree wen left my hair with a rough texture and not manageable. I like the idea of wen and it does work, but it wasn’t for me.

I wound up liking doves oil therapy shampoo and conditioner and john frieda’s full repair much better. The full repair system leaves my hair soft, even at the ends, and I can skip using my flat iron. I’ve been getting a lot of compliments about how healthy my hair is since using it.

Bottom line is you have to find what works for you, and don’t diss drug store brands, like I used to. Some do work well

I think Wen is more for people who don’t use or don’t need a lot of product so all the Wen has to take care of is the natural oil and dirt buildup rather than product.

A friend gave me a bottle to try and I was so excited to see what the hype was about. After only two days of use, it took everything I had not to claw my scalp off. I was so itchy and irritated… and it took two weeks of using my normal products to get it back to normal. I was also concerned about the buildup on my fine volume-challenged hair. Some people swear by Wen. I wanted to be one of them. Alas. I noticed a couple days ago that Sephora is selling two other “flavors”. I was tempted, but after reading some online reviews, decided not to give it another go.

Same here regarding the itchy scalp. However, I have permanent itchy scalp. I’ve found one product that eases the itching. The minute I stop using that product to try something else, the itching starts again. I see a visit to a dermatologist in my future… unless someone can suggest a cure.

I agree with everything you said. I have oily to normal hair. I have been using Wen for about 2-3 months. I have noticed that my hair is definitely not as shiny and the ends are pretty dry. I color my hair every 4 months just to cover some annoying grays. I have dark brown to almost black hair. I pretty much can do anything to my hair and it never looks damaged. With Wen my hair looks dry and unhealthy. I am canceling my subscription today! Thanks for your post!

I had the same experience too. I used wen for only 2 days and my hair felt like it had so much product in it – and I only use a little bit of styling cream and hairspray! Plus, my hair felt super oily. I took advantage of their money back guarantee, although they made even that very hard to do.

I have used WEN on and off and have come to these conclusions: you in no way need 16 pumps of the stuff for it to clean and/or condition your hair. I have normal hair, not oily, probably a bit damaged from color and heat tools but mostly normal and about the same length and texture as Kate’s. I had the most success with WEN when I used just enough product to get my hair to feel slippery- which was maybe 6 pumps. It rinsed out fine and left my hair clean and not overly conditioned but most importantly- not weighed down and “coated”. I maily stopped using it because I wasn’t getting these fantastic results that warranted the expense.

Sally Beauty makes a product similar to WEN called Hair One. I actually liked it better than WEN and it is less expensive…maybe 1/3 of the cost. I don’t use near the amount of product in the shower that the bottle recommends. I also can’t use it as a leave-in conditioner. I had been using the product for about 6 mos when my hairstylist had commented on how much healthier my hair seemed. I’ve been using it for 2 years. That said, I don’t use a lot of product in my hair when styling. Maybe 1 or 2 things. Last, it was only after switching to Hair One that I was able to go a day or 2 between cleansing my hair. I would describe my hair as fine with natural curl/wave in it.

I have used Wen a few times and while my hair is totally opposite of yours (dark, very oily, silky (which makes it hard to style), and I don’t have a lot of color on it) I actually received the same results you did. My mom and aunt use it all the time and love it. As a hair stylist myself, when I color and style my mom and aunt, I can actually take my fingers and “pull” this waxy layer off of the hair shaft. In my opinion, it should be used as more of a once a week mask or a conditioning treatment instead of using it every wash. I have noticed however, a lot of my clients who dont usually do a lot of styling to their hair (mostly long hair they let air dry and that’s it) use Wen and it does seem to do great.

I love WEN, but I think I’m going to cancel my auto-delivery. I get mine through QVC and I never have enough. I run out before my next shipment. I never get all of the product out so I have bottles turned over in mugs in my bathroom. I found that I love a few WEN products that I don’t have to worry about running out of a lot — the replenishing mist and finishing treatment. Those are awesome. I don’t live in an area where I can pop on over to the store and buy some WEN so for me, it’s probably best that I don’t use 100% WEN products. I have been using the Not Your Mother’s products. The Way to Grow shampoo and conditioner, Smooth Moves for straight hair days, Kinky Moves for curly, and the Knotty-something detangler. So far I have been happy with those — and I can get them at Target and Ulta, yay! 🙂 Thanks for your WEN article! I am glad that you tried it. 🙂

I have never tried Wen but I had read that this product was similar:
http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=395225&catid=186696&aid=338666&aparam=goobase_filler&device=c&network=g&matchtype=

I got it at my grocery store and it happened to be on sale so it was a whole whopping $4.50. I tried it and really liked it, at first. Unfortunately I had a somewhat similar experience as you did with the itchy scalp. Mine got to the point where it was a itchy burning sensation. Like I said, I’ve never used Wen so I’m not sure how they compare but it might be an option for someone that wants to try a “cleansing conditioner” without having to pay the steep price of Wen! It was really interesting reading your take on things! I think I’ll stick with my Pureology 🙂

I have been using Wen for several months and love it, but I was wondering if you could answer a question. After using Wen for several months, I decided to take a break to see how normal shampoo would make a difference on my hair after getting used to Wen. I shampooed and conditioned normally for several weeks, and the condition of my hair declined rapidly. My hair became dry and brittle, and I had to straighten it every day for it to look half way decent. My scalp itched and it actually broke out some. I have very oily hair that I have to shampoo daily, but it tends to get dry on the ends sometimes, because they are damaged, but my hair does wonderfully with Wen. Do you have any idea why my hair and scalp would react to normal shampoo after using Wen for a while? It was a brand I had used many times before, so I know it wasn’t an allergic reaction.

My sister is one who can and does use Wen everyday. Our stylist says she is the only one she knows who has success with it. I have baby fine, thin, blonde hair. After my sis raved about Wen, I bought a bottle. I find it only can be used as a good once a week conditioner. I need volume and it only weighs my hair down. I love my Aquage uplifting foam tho!!! =) Have been using it everyday and it is the only thing that helps my hair stay all day (with the exception of very wet snowy days!) Thank you for the product review!

I love Wen. I used it until I ran out and thought I didn’t need it anymore…and then my hair gradually turned back in to its original state. And now I’m using it again! I think you were using too much of it. My hair never looks like the models in the infomercial but I can’t explain the difference Wen makes. It is worth the $$ for me. I have bad hair and Wen makes it soft, shiny, and easy to manage.

The same thing happened to me, except for when I stopped using it, my hair became worse than it was before. At least it seemed worse…I guess it is possible I had just forgotten how my hair was pre-wen.

I’ve been on the fence so I will probably skip it. I’m pretty skeptical that it would work for me. I have a very oily scalp and my hair is very greasy if I don’t wash it each day.

Hi, my review of WEN is going to be very different from most of the reviews above. I am one of those who tried WEN and yes, experienced hair loss. I’ve always taken good care of my hair and was excited to try this product. For the first few weeks the product worked wonderfully, my hair looked and felt great. About one month of using the product I noticed that my bangs were not as full as they use to be. Then my hairdresser noticed that I definitely had thinning hair… she asked me if I was using something different. I never suspected WEN but went on line and sure enough, I was the not the only one using WEN and experienced hair loss. In fact, whole websites are set up just on this including Youtube. Do a simple WEN and hair loss search and you will see for yourself. Healthy hair starts at the scalp so exfoliating the scalp is crucial for healthy hair… Wen focuses only on the actual hair. There definitely is something in this product that some people are allergic to… so be cautious, buyer be ware. This is only my experience however there is enough people who had the same experience like me. For some if works well, but to say that WEN does not cause hair loss is wrong… people have lost their hair. You should be aware of this if you want to try this product for the first time.

I too used WEN. I really liked the product and used it for about a year. I stopped using it because of the expense. I also noticed thinning hair around my crown, but never associated it with the WEN product. I wished I had read the reviews before ever purchasing.

Reply
Bobbi Jo Kellogg says · 05.18.17

I lose so much hair in the shower, that it has actually made me break down and cry. I have one particular spot near the crown that is very noticeably thinning very quickly. I have always taken good care of my hair, and because of my natural curl, have never had to do much as far as styling abuse. I am 54 years old, do use color, but only when I absolutely MUST cover the gray, and have been off the WEN for nearly a year, and my hair is thinning, very dry, and my scalp itches all the time…..I agree with those who say it must be different for each individual….thank you for sharing. I only hope the situation eventually reverses itself. Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated. God Bless! : )

For those of us who use a lot of product, I agree with Kate that Wen was too heavy. The one thing I can’t seem to fix, with any shampoo is how to get rid of oil on the back of my head (top/back of scalp) despite scrubbing with my shampoo. Do clarifying shampoos help with this or strip your color?

I love Wen and rotate it into my process every few washes (I can go three days without washing my hair), and have to agree, 16 pumps is too much! I start with 4, then add as needed. I have long (between shoulder blades) blonde hair that is thick but fine. It took some practice to get my routine down right (greasy after washes, even some forehead breakouts) but I LOVE it now! Don’t give up on it

I don’t use alot of other hair products and I like Wen. I don’t use it all the time, but I feel like when I do use it for a week or so my hair looks the best it ever has. I would recommend trying it out a day or two without using the extra products. See how your hair is then.

I”m a Wen user. I’ve got very thin, super curly hair and it’s the only product that gives me volume and helps keep my curls in their nature state. Although when the humidity kicks up outside, after a few days I have to resort back to washing with shampoo for about a week so my hair will react better when I switch back to Wen. It’s crazy. But I do agree, Wen’s not for everyone. I like hearing other people’s reviews on it.

I used Wen…Loved it!! My hair never looked better…I became addicted to the stuff. I even called Wen my crack. After 3 months of using it, I noticed that my drains were clogging and my hair was falling out. Within weeks I had lost 40% of my hair. I was one of the unfortunate ones…A year later my hair is still thinner and I have a bald spot. Strangely, my mother and aunts have been using Wen for years and have not had the same experience.

I have colored, slightly dry hair and I have had success with Wen. I can go about 2 days without washing (short length) and even longer between washes when my hair was long. I especially love that I don’t have a two step process of shampoo & conditioner. You do have to get your hair VERY wet — I mean SOAKING — before you work in the product. And after rinsing, you can use a tiny bit as a leave on for the ends, which helps with dryness. On a separate note, I am always jealous of the lift and body at the crown of your head! I have been trying to get my hands on Aquage uplifting foam for over a year. No salons in my neighborhood sell it, and my stylist won’t help me buy it :(. I might just have to plan a trip “over-the-hill” into a fancy Beverly Hills salon to find it. Your blog is probably one of my fav blogs ever (yours & the Pioneer Woman are my favs!). I love that you are seem so down-to-earth and approachable, and your style is so classy and feminine. Please keep up the great work.

uuggh I hated Wen too!! I wanted to love it SO much. My hair tends to be normal/dry while my scalp tends to be a bit more oily. It’s also SUPER fine. Like that of a newborn infant fine. Like no amount of teasing and volumizers can give me volume fine. I tried Wen 2 separate times. I ordered mine via QVC and started with a 16 oz bottle of the Sweet Almond Mint. Figured I’d start with the original. I had the exact same issue as you! I actually went on the Wen website after trying different ways of applying (always rinse hair for 2 minutes, 4 pumps per section 8 pumps per section 16 pumps per section.. massage vigorously.. let it sit while I washed my face and body and shaved then finally rinsed for what felt like 20 minutes) with ZERO luck and chatted online with a customer service agent. I told her what was going on and she said it’s always better to use more Wen then less so it can really clean your hair and scalp. Tried that. NADA. No difference whatsoever. My build up was always on the crown of my head. It was the most disgusting feeling. I consulted the QVC product guide for Wen products and thought I’d try the Lavender version for fine hair. I even ordered the huge size so I could really try it out for a long time (that tiny bottle lasted like 10 minutes with the amount of product they recommend you use). No difference whatsoever, except that this one did leave me with an itchy scalp when the original did not. So I lasted more than halfway through the bottle and literally could not take it anymore. The feeling at my scalp was so gross, when I straightened my hair it was like greasy pieces. I finally couldn’t take it anymore so I started using a regular shampoo again and using Wen only as a conditioner, concentrating the most on the ends. It works great for that! I’m glad someone else had the same issue as me!

That was a great review!

My mother has exactly the same hair texture as you, and when she ordered it for herself, she had the same experience that you did, so she passed the product package along to me. I am mixed, and have very curly hair, similar to Shirley Temples but brown. When I used the products and straightened my hair, I dealt with the same heavy residue and other issues. However, when I chose to leave my hair curly, I found that Wen did wonders for my hair. It felt super soft and my curls dried perfectly sculpted. While I think those with straight, wavy, or fine hair should use other products, I would recommend Wen for women with curly or very coarse hair.

done. 🙂 So I switch off from my WEN and my regular shampoo/conditioner. Makes my WEN last longer. And I don’t wash my hair every day, about 2-3 days. Depending on how much product I use, which isn’t much. 🙂

I tried the Wen products as well. My experience was not that good. My hair did look curlier but my scalp was itching terribly and very flaky. I never had a flaky scalp, ever. So for me, it was my scalp that was causing me problems. So I started back using my regular shampoo and using the Wen for conditioner. It’s been a week and the itching and flaking has stopped. My scalp never ever felt clean when using Wen alone. I also never use the amount recommended……omg that would have made my scalp itch worse I think…….I only use about 4 or 5 pumps of the Wen, wait several minutes and rinse. I add a little dab on my ends and don’t wash it out……..Well this is my experience.

The Shielo Hydrate Shampoo is the first “non-salon” shampoo that does not dry my scalp out. I have severe allergies and no matter what I try at home, it always seems to leave my hair flat and my scalp dry. There was no itching and the scent of the Shielo Hydrate is out of this world.

My hair is thick, course and blonde and highlighted. I have been using Kerastase for years and it has gotten to the point of being so dry I can barely wash it – it is hard and brittle even when wet. Silicon build up is the culprit. It doesn’t wash away and takes a while to wash out, even with a silicon free shampoo. But after one wash with the Shielo Hydrate Shampoo, my hair is back to feeling baby soft again! I love Shielo and I have never even heard of this brand! I am going to use this as my regular shampoo until it is gone. Its from the Shielo brand, called Shielo Hydrate Shampoo.

Everything I’ve read or seen on the infomercials about WEN says you only need to use WEN. I realize you’re a stylist, however, by adding the root lifter product, you may have created the problem you don’t like. I have not yet tried WEN, however, one of my friends uses it and her hair looks fabulous! So next paycheck, I’m going to purchase it.

Seriously do. I have no idea what these ppl have been going thru cause my experience has been Amazing. First off I got it within three days AND when it arrived the box was soaked and covered in plastic. So I took pics and I called them and seriously have never been so impressed with customer service in my life. They sent me to someone that could help with itand wwithout any questions about it they sent me a new order. Didn’t ask what product I thought might be missing (they werr gifts anyways I didn’t pay for them) and they daid they were so sorry and THAT very second they were ordering me a new package and said I didn’t have to send anything back. This product is a dream. I used it once last night and I almost cried I have course hair and when it dries its stringy and poofball. But my hair feels so soft like plush blanket soft and so manageable. My daughter who is half black half white worked amazing on her TOO. Seriously I read this before I got it and I was scared…AND JUST SHOWS TO NOT LISTEN TO EVERYTHING PPL WRITE CAUSE IT MAY WORK WONDERFUL FOR YOU. AND YES YOU SAVE MONEY. Instead of paying $20 shampoo (maybe less unless you use store product like pantene) $20 conditioner there it is for one wen product but I got the spray anti frizzy sixthirteen ‘re moist ultra cleansing treatment volumizing root lift which didn’t come fell out of the box. Replenishing treatment spray and also got the travel kit for free. To buy all that stuff and hairspray mouse gel whatever is well over the price for WEN. Seriously try it. I tried on two different hair types last night..mine I’m Czech GERMAN and two dif Indians and my children who half me and Italian and black. And it worked great so just try it for yourself and I think every three months is great. Dont have to stop at the store for product. I also have meaningful beauty that does that. HAVE FUN AND GET GREAT HAIR.

I’m glad I stumbled on your blog tonight, as I saw a commercial for WEN recently and wondered if it was worth trying. I have a lot of fine, soft hair, so it can be a little finicky with some products (I don’t use any products after I shower…just blowdry & go). Your description made me laugh because it was almost exactly the same experience I had with a combination of Kiehl’s Amino Acid shampoo and Conditioner and Grooming Aid Formula 133. Those are what my gym provides in the showers, so when I first signed up I was psyched for free Kiehl’s and was determined for it to work…after 3 days, though, same feeling as you had with WEN (residue-y, itchy, etc.) and I couldn’t WAIT to wash and condition with my Dove products. I’ve since started bringing my own conditioner, and the Amino Acid shampoo seems to work ok…it’s just frustrating that Kiehl’s touts the Formula 133 as “for ALL hair types”, when really, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Anyway, I digress…thank you for this review…I definitely won’t be trying WEN!! 🙂

I have been reading all those negative comments and think perhaps maybe you all are too busy to READ the labels and instructions. My daughter has long, bleached and sunburned hair, and has been using WEN and her hair never looked better. I am 75 with short frosted blond/gray hair, and I thought I wanted to try WEN. I purchased on Amazon and have been using it for over 2 months. You need to get your hair WET before you put the pumps and and then massage it all over. Finish your personal shower and then rinse the product out really well. I decided to just comb my hair the way I wanted it to dry and let it DRY without blow drying, which is why most of you have so many problems. It dries beautifully, is shiny and all I do is fluff it with my fingers, put a little hair spray on and go! I used to wash my hair every other day, but now, I only wash it every 4 or 5 days and it looks great. Sometimes, if you take the time to use things correctly, they Actually Work !! Good Luck….

Uh… I’ve been using Wen for about a year. Correction:I wasted my hard earned money on wen for about a year. I purchased that huge $200. salon sized supply from QVC (fig). I JUST couldnt stop using it since I couldn’t get a refund. My scalp is [still] so irritated . Always itching and burning.to the point that I now scheduled an appointment with a dermatologist, cut most of it off because it’s nasty looking and thin like a stray dog’s fur. I have been using it on my daughter’s hair as well. She is now six years old. My baby’s hair was so unmanageable…very long (almost to butt) and very thick and curly. My hair is curly (or was) and thick but manageable. Needless to say I was extremely happy when after a month or so of using Wen, my daughter’s hair became extremely manageable. Her curls loosened up. It was a bit confusing but I thought “hmm…did her hair texture change? Naw…this wen is really good for her hair”. Well…fast fwd to one yr later…I decided to put her hair in a ponytail (usually out with one of her thousands of headbands) OMG…WE BOTH EXPERIENCED EXTREME HAIR LOSS! I see her scalp around her hairline as do I see mine! I already made plans to see a hair loss specialist due to my extremely thinning hair but now my baby? My beautiful, bubbly baby girl going bald? Please…if you use this product…do so at your own risk but DO NOT USE ON KIDS! I even called the wen # to ask if it was ok for kids to use before she ever used it…they recommend using in children! Never again.

Thank you for this review. My daughter has completely unmanageable hair and I was going to try Wen on her just to see if it helps. While I am brushing it, right after I have cleared knots, it re-knots. I wish I were joking! After reading your review and what Michelle M. had to say, there is no way I’m going to try it.

Can you recommend something for a child’s hair that will help keep it manageable? She does a lot of swimming and plays tennis so it goes through the ringer. Thanks!

I use nexus pro mend on my daughter’s hair. It’s pricey but definitely cheaper than wen. Costco sells the whole system for about $20 which is about half of what you’d pay for the system at Walmart, plus double the size.Currently we are trying Invati by Aveda, I can’t say for sure if it’s working or not (we suffered hair loss due to wen) because it’s only been a couple weeks. It’s way too expensive and our $120 supply is almost gone. I do see a huge difference after washing(thick shiny hair) but it’s only temporary. After the first day it’s back to limp lifeless hair. I’ll keep you posted.

I agree with Penny. It’s not a good product to use if you use alot of styling products. I’ve been using WEN for over 3 years, don’t use styling products often and although I don’t get the results they offer on the infomercials-my hair always feels clean and is manageable (I have very fine hair-not thin but fine). If I do happen to use products, I’ll shampoo with Purology (love the way it foams) and it makes me feel like I’ve had a nice clean start. You do have to use the suggested amount of WEN to get a best result-don’t skimp and rinse rinse rinse. It’s sad that some people have had hair loss and these negative issues, but I guess any product can do that. I buy mine from QVC and get a much better deal than WEN website or infomercials. Thank you KATE for your blogs and tutorials!!! I’ve had fun trying the different styles.

I bought Wen hair care and at first I loved it the more i used it the worse my hair felt weighed down, I went to order one more shipment so that I can it maybe once a week for a deep conditioner. I went to cancel it and they sent me a bill for 98.00. So I called and they told me that i ordered my next supply and that it was a 90 day supply. They will give you your first month but then the next supply is 90 days and they say that they told you when you order and agree to the term in the small print. Do not order with them they are just trying to get your money. Only good thing would be a deep conditioner.

Using Wen was a nightmare for my hair, I have very fine strands of hair which has a natural curl. The first time I used Wen I followed the instructions I noticed how knotty my hair felt during the cleansing process but I continued using it to give the product a real chance but after day 4 I noticed large clumps of hair coming out of my scalp. I do understand that it is natural to lose hair daily but I have never experienced the shedding I saw when using Wen. The more I used to product the more of my hair fell out and I eventually ended up with a pretty prominent thin spot at the back of my head, when I say thin spot I mean you could see my scalp. To make sure my hair less wasn’t due to a medical issue I was given many different blood test that all come back normal. Long story short (pun intended) I had to chip my beautiful long curly hair off to shoulder length layered bob in order to give some height to my hair in order cover my bald spot. It’s been about a year since I used this Wen, and my hair is still suffering the effects of this horrendous product. I would never refer this product to anyone, in fact if anyone asked my opinion on this product I would tell them my hair horror story due to this horrible product. So the answer to the question of “does wen cause hair loss,” is YES, yes it truly can cause hair loss. Aside from the hair loss I just couldn’t see how using this product is any different then just using a conditioner on your hair as a cleanser in place your shampoo and In my opinion my normal condition works better, not to mention it’s much more cost effective

Your hair will be beautiful and healthy if you combine hair care products with right nutrition. Most nutrients for hair are received from blood, not from outside. That is why your food should be reach in vitamins. In addition, vitamins could be taken separately. I am taking special dietary supplement for hair – Hair Gain Formula by Military Grade. It contains natural compounds which enhance hair growth. My hair becomes more shiny and thick. I really like how this product works for my hair!

I was delighted after the first wash. However, after several times effect became completely different and that the worst thing – the hair began to fall out that has never happened to me with any other products, even the cheapest one.

Quality of my hair changed for the worse; electrified, naughty, even bang flies in all directions,
and there is some kind of film or coating on the hair that does not pass even after 2-3 wash with another shampoo I can not find anywhere list of ingredients, I want to believe that everything is really natural and and high quality, but my hair deteriorated after 3-5 times washing with WEN.

When I read other reviews, I realized that my symptoms are very similar to what others got, and this fact is very suspicious to me.
Do not rush to conclusions about the product after several uses, give your hair time to understand, perhaps for you it is not very desirable product also

.I have been wanting to try Wen for so long, but I never wanted to pay $60.00+tax at the T.V Showcase store, so when I received the Fig Wen hair set as a Christmas gift I was so surprised and excited, but very skeptical about using this product. for a few years I have been suffering B12 and Iron deficiencies caused by major stress and I started noticing severe thinning overtime especially on the top where my hair part is so my major concern was if the product would cause me to have further hair loss and if it would cause my hair to be flat, oily and lose the little volume that I had, but I took the plunge anyways and tried it after New Years on the first Friday so I would be able to monitor the results during that weekend… Oh my… I love it!!!! It feels so clean; it feels so soft and shining, it feels like I have more hair than I actually have and it’s full of bounce and volume. Styling my hair is a breeze and the style stayed in all day! But I only use it 3 times a week and I don’t use the “recommended amount” because I think it’s too much product for my shoulder length hair. I use very little of it, maybe 6-8 full pumps total, I divided it in 2 parts and do 2 full rinses, but the last rinse I will use a bit of cool water as they recommended. I do alternate between the Wen and my Airbonne brand shampoo and conditioner. One comment that I read that is worth trying is to try and train my hair to only wash 3 times a week rather than the 4-5 times I currently do now. I will try the dry shampoo products that were recommended to avoid one or two less wash’s a week. Thanks for the tip!
By the way, I live in Toronto and when I do need to start purchasing my Wen hair set it will be at the T.V Showcase store that is located in the malls. I would rather pay double the price than buying it online just not to have the hassles. I will purchase the product when I want it, select different blends if I choose too and know my bank account is safe and my credibility is not being messed with and if I want to stop using it, I just won’t buy it…but for right now, I love it and I am going to buy it!

I love WEN, however i feel i am planning to cancel my auto-delivery. i buy mine through QVC and that i ne’er have enough. I run out before my next cargo. I ne’er get all of the merchandise out therefore I even have bottles turned over in mugs in my toilet. I found that i really like many sebaceous cyst merchandise that i do not ought to worry regarding running out of plenty — the replenishing mist and finishing treatment. Those square measure impressive. i do not sleep in a district wherever I will pop on over to the shop and get thereforeme sebaceous cyst so on behalf of me, it’s most likely best that i do not use 100 percent sebaceous cyst merchandise. I even have been victimisation the Not Your Mother’s merchandise. The thanks to Grow shampoo and conditioner, swish Moves for straight hair days, Kinky Moves for frizzly, and therefore the Knotty-something detangler. thus far I even have been proud of those — and that i will get them at Target and Ulta, yay! 🙂 Thanks for your sebaceous cyst article! i’m glad that you just tried it.

The customer service is amazing and the product is over the top perfect. My hair has never felt so soft and clean and moisturizer then ever. I also think some ppl need to rethink the way they have been using other products or coloring it. I couldn’t imagine. OH AND ON THE INFO COMMERCIALS IF YOU CAN READ IT IT DAYS TEN WASHES…SO AFTER TEN WASHES IT LOOKED THAT GREAT. NIT AFTER ONE TRY NOTHIng CAN BE THAT PERFECT. But after one wash on my hair im hooked

I only tried Wen because I got an offer to try a 1-month supply for $9.95. I thought, it better do amazing things for me to KEEP purchasing it at $29.95 per month after this. It was fine. But not better than Purology Hydrate which I get in half-gallon size. I get it through a relative that is licensed (so I get it about 1/2 off retail through a professional Salon store). I think even at full retail Purology would be cheaper because Wen is RIDICULOUSLY priced. So I went to cancel and canceling is proving to be nearly impossible. It is 9:44AM CST and I have been on hold for over 88 MINUTES. “Live Chat” said that phone # is open 24/7 so I have been doing things at home and staying on hold. They don’t have any hold music or anything. I called back after 7 minutes the first time because I thought maybe I got it wrong. This time I said “change what is in my kit” at the prompts thinking they put me in la-la-land BECAUSE I want to cancel. Same thing the second time. No hold music or even a recorded sales pitch. I “signed out” of my WEN account on the website to see if I could find more customer service options (because I couldn’t find the LIVE CHAT once signed into my account). I got LIVE CHAT to pop up and here is part of the conversation:
Rachel: My apologies, I wish I could help you with that; however, I specialize in new product orders and I do not have access on your account since I don’t have the necessary tools to do that as well.
You: Is there another way? Like another LIVE CHAT area or a place on the website to cancel?
Rachel: I’m sorry to tell you that only our Customer Service can do the canceling your account.

So I sent them an email via the Customer Service area at the bottom. I don’t know if it will work but I threatened to reject payment via my credit card if they don’t comply. It really shouldn’t be this hard to cancel. Imagine if I wanted to change what is in my kit. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. Rachel eventually got my phone number and said she would have Customer Service call me. I guess we will see.

Hi Kate,

Thank you for the great review. I tried Wen over the past month and I have mixed feelings. I have long thick hair with some split ends and a few frizzies. Have never colored my hair. I felt the wen made my hair look better and just made it fall better into place over all. The thing I did not like is that it did not make my hair feel clean and my hair would look oliy earlier than normal. So I am not sure if I will continue the product of not. Kate, are there any shampoo and conditioners you could recommend?

Thanks,

Kim

I found Wen to be a fabulous product! You probably won’t see miracles in only a week, but with patience in learning how to use it with your hair and a little bit of time it can really transform your hair … truly!

The first thing that struck me with this review is the daily use of this product. When you overwash your hair it removes ALL the oil on your scalp and your scalp then keeps producing more oil. When you shampoo less, your scalp produces less oil which in turn means you don’t have to wash it as often. Using WEN I only wash every 3-4 days now, which is less harsh on your hair. The first week with this routine your hair will likely look a little greasy, but it will get better and better. So, as far as weighing the hair down, the daily use is very likely part of it, but I would also consider the products used after shampooing. I need very little, and lightweight, products after using WEN. I also use less product than the directions use and use plenty of water before applying product. It’s a totally different process, don’t think of it like a typical daily shampoo and with some time, IMO, you’ll be SO happy you did.

I have used WEN exclusively for about two years now and I love it. I love the one-step cleansing and conditioning. After rinsing thoroughly I put two dime-sized squirts back into my hair as a leave-in and then air-dry. With WEN I use no other products in my hair and I go four to five days between washes. My hair is long, thick, curly, and coarse but when makes it soft, shiny, manageable and defined (not frizzy). Also, my scalp and hair seem to stay cleaner longer between washes, and my shower time is shorter because of cleansing as and conditioning in one step. I don’t use as many pumps as directed, so my gallon-sized jug lasts long time. I buy it on QVC so there’s no auto-subscribe hassle. WEN is not for everyone but it’s definitely right for me!

OK sooo to those looking for shampoos and conditioners ya please go to a salon do not ever ever by shampoo or conditioner or styling products from a regular store….there shampoo and condionters can actually be expired or fake. Which means they don’t work right and cause more damage and to people with dry damaged hair use a deep contioner once a week it really helps a lot if you straighten your like I do than maybe use a deep condioner twice a week sometimes I have to because styling with heat products reallly drys out or hair with or without a heat protectant I’ve been using biolage from salon Paul Mitchell deep conditioner and matrix leave in conditioner and there the only thing that work for me…but….. with dry hair try switching your shampoo and conditioner every few weeks dry curly hair does adapt to shampoo and conditioners after so long so eventually it won’t work so always use two different kind of contioners and never shampoo your hair every day its reallllly bad for your hair

You didn’t use it right at all, which is probabl why you had problems. I used it today for the first time and LOVE IT!! Worth every penny. He says in the directions to use wet all your hair and then use HALF the recommended amount of pumps and massage it in well to your scalp and then down through the ends. Then rinse and rinse and rinse some more. I didn’t feel it took any more time than normal for me though. Then, you do the other half of your recommended amount and massage that in, run through to the ends. I use a wide toothed comb for this and leave it the length of your shower, however long that is. I also use his 613 which is amazing conditioner as well if you need the added boost like me. You put a three to four pumps of that in with your last cleanse for the remainder of the shower. Then rinse, and rinse and rinse and rinse some more and my hair has volume, even on the ends!! and it was wet!
Love this product.

I am a recent former Wen user and I absolutly hated this product! I gave into buying it after years of seeing this advertised all over T.V. on those infomercials daily. I thought I might as well give this product a try. I mean what can it hurt cause you know those models in the commericals have such beautiful hair after using and styling their hair with these products. WRONG! LOL. I recieved my order after a couple weeks and I used it the next morning even though I had already washed my hair the previous day. Now my hair texture is fine and thick with an oily texture to my scalp after not washing my hair for about 2 days which is normal for me. After washing my hair that morning with the Wen exactly as the bottle said 16 pumps for medium hair. Now 16 pumps of Wen is A LOT of product, one pump is almost a lot of product for this cleansing conditoner. After getting out of the shower I put the other product in my hair which was the frizz cream (which is actually a gel) and then after drying was the frizz serum. My hair felt okay after all this but a couple hours into my day my hair started feeling greasy and heavy. I couldn’t believe my hair already felt this way only a couple hours after washing it but I thought maybe I just need to have my hair get use to the product. I kept using the cleansing conditoner almost daily because my hair felt so horrible everyday. I would wash my hair at night and then the next morning it felt like I hadn’t washed it in 3 days. After only 2 weeks of using this product I couldn’t stand it anymore, I even tried using less product everday but nothing helped. I decided that one morning I was going to cancel my order and get my money back. So I called the 1-800 number on my shipping order and I got disconnected before even talking to someone so I called back a second time then getting a customer service person. Now the guy on the phone was trying to tell me how great Wen was and I shouldn’t cancel. After arguing with the guy on the phone about how thier product doesn’t work and I want my money back the customer service rep finally cancelled my account and then told me that I still owed about $55.00 more on my account, even though I was still in my trial period of the 60 days money back gaurentee. I then asked about their so called “money back gaurentee” the rep told me if I send them the product back I will recieve my refund in 4-6 weeks back on my card. A few days later I went to the post office to mail my Wen back and I had to pay $23.00 shipping just to mail this product back that didn’t even work. I was just glad to be rid of it and I would advise anyone who actually considers buying Wen to just save yourself the trouble and not waste your time or money.

I wanted so badly to like the product, in fact I was sure that I would. When I first received it I took a shower and couldn’t wait for the results. Some have said they noticed a difference immediately, and I thought there is no reason why I wouldn’t too. I couldn’t believe it. My hair was so greasy and waxy. I never felt anything like it. It actually smelled very good, and had the texture of a conditioner. so I rinsed for awhile. After drying my hair, I could not believe how waxy and greasy it felt. I don’t think my hair has ever felt like this, for sure after “shampooing” it!! Tried again, just sure it was me. I stood in the shower rinsing for what felt like an eternity, and ……my hair was still feeling greasy and waxy, ugh. Tried several more times and same result. Its not me. I returned the product with no problem, although it did take awhile for the refund. I’m still bummed that the product did not work for me. Try Oribe shampoo, smells amazing and the brilliance and shine are incredible.

I thank you for your candid experiential advice. I called to order Wen products as advertised on television (29.99). Of course they always like to add additional products, so it is up to us to say, “No.”

I did the opposite of a good sound-minded person by not searching for reviews first before ordering. After I ordered, I thought to search. Well, I read many negative reviews compared to a few positive ones. Your blog has along with other reviews have convinced me to opt out out of using the product. Someone shared their story of hair loss (scary).

Well, I immediately called back (20 minutes after the order) to cancel. Surprisingly, the people in customer services could not locate my order. Interesting! Thirty minutes later I thought to check my bank acct. sure enough the order was processed, so I called back to cancel. The people still could not find my order. I asked the lady was my information just floating in cyberspace. She stated that I had to wait 24hrs before they gain access. How interesting.

When I woke up this morning (7am), I called to attempt to cancel, still no access to my order or account. I went to do errands. When I returned home, I received an email with details of my order. The total price of my order is $119.39 ( 4 payment installments).

I called with anger bullring up inside me. They were able to locate my information 12 noon). This time my order was already mailed off from the warehouse. The customer representative is only working for a living. It is not his fault. I just simply stated that the ordering process is set up to keep people from canceling their orders.

I have to wait to receive the kit, because that is how the system is designed. By the way, the polite customer service representative has to send me a return label to place on my package in order to return my order and be refunded. This suppose to guarantee a smooth transition for refunding my money. I did cancel my subscription. This process may be interesting.

I might see if I can pay extra to have it delivered requesting signature. I know this is going to be a fun process and a well learned experience for me.

Again, thank you

It didn’t work for you because you didn’t follow the instructions properly.
You are supposed to wet your hair thoroughly apply plenty of we from roots to ends, add a little water then clean your hair thoroughly with your finger tips, brush through and pin up for 5 mins minimum then rinse. While the hair is still damp add half a pump of wen through the mid shaft and ends (it’ll solve your dry ends problem) AS INSTRUCTED ON THE BOTTLE
Do NOT use other products, you don’t need them, but don’t over dry your hair.
I air dry my hair 🙂
I have been using this product for a year now and I aware by it, it’s amazing and my heavily coloured hair has never looked or felt better.

Before being sceptical about this item try it for yourself, follow the instructions properly and you’ll never want to look back

I have naturally curly hair–never able to control it to my satisfaction–if I tried to grow it I had a circular fuzzy area in the back of my head that I had to have the stylist “thin” for years–when I was younger and slimmer short hair was fine and I could blow dry quickly and spray–done But as I got older and not so slim…I wanted to grow it longer—fuzzy head again–then found Wen!! My hair has never been curlier or easier to do I went though some time to find out how many pumps and which styling products worked for me. There are some basic truths You have to have your hair very wet-soak it while you wash your face in the shower first…I leave some in at the ends and if I let it dry it’s best for my curl but does great if I blow dry into a different style too. I have days that are less than perfect because the humidity/weather is a factor for my hair! I love Wen I have never had a problem pushing my delivery date back a couple months if needed. I have bought some styling products from QVC which is great because he tries new things out there, the wen site doesn’t have everything you see on QVC I am going to Sephora.com now to ck prices! I love 613 best and use it in a mousse form and styling gel as well. If you use it correctly it’s great!

They set you up for automatic withdrawals from your account. The customer service is no help at all. I’m trying to dispute these charges from my bank account.

I caved as well. I have thin, fine hair in a chin length bob. I do not use styling products and rarely blow dry or use a flat/curling iron I chose the lavender (suggested for fine hair) I only use 4 pumps and I do not repeat. My hair is very soft and looks very shiny even seems a bit darker since using it (could just be the shine) My scalp was a bit itchy the first few days. I get a few (not sure which they are) hives or maybe pimples on my scalp and hairline when using other shampoos and the first day using this the one existing hive/pimple I had on my scalp broke, which does not happen unless I do it myself and can be a bit painful so I was surprised by that. So for me so far so good:)

I’m late to this party but I have to comment. I’m 64 years old, have dry, course hair and thought WEN was a hype. However, due to meds and maybe even heredity, I am losing my hair in the front when I had hair so thick I couldn’t wear bangs.

I bought the Orange Blossom generic cleanser/conditioner and although there is a menthol smell that I originally found bothersome, it is in most of the formulations and I believe it helps in regrowth. But here’s the twist… the author of the review DID NOT STATE which scent she tried. They are ALL for different reasons pertaining to the condition of your hair. Although the Lavender states it’s for dry, processed hair, it dried my hair out MORE~! The tea tree is supposed to really help with regrowth but the smell is noxious to me (mostly menthol/mint smell).

The Orange Blossom (seasonal scent for 2014) has been unbelievable for my hair! For the first time in years I don’t need a detangler (I used Ojon Moisturizing Mist for years) and my hair is light, fluffy, clean and after 4 weeks, guess what? I’m seeing new growth where I had hair loss.

I am one of those people who do not Cheerlead. Nope, not a cheerleader and I resent how much I have paid for the bottles I own…. but here’s the deal. Once you find the RIGHT formulation and how many pumps to use (I have short hair, I use 5 and then 5), and
it’s a learning curve. I now use some Tea Tree (hair growth but can’t stand the smell) and then use the Orange Blossom to finish which is the one that makes my hair absolutely incredible!! Once you find where you are in all this, IT IS WORTH IT~! I have not had my hair this manageable since I went through menopause. Am I cheerleading? I suppose I am…. but I’m also telling this blogger that I don’t think she found the right formula for her hair and shutting it all down because of this isn’t right.

This is the BEST my hair has been in years. I plan to continue using it and encourage others to try the different formulas and even mix and match different formulas until you find the right mixture. It works… period.

Yes…it does work!!! I do not use as many pumps as it reads.. But I use what I feel is right for my hair. I have used it over a year now.. And I do not find chunks of hair in my drain anymore. and my hair is not frizzy any more it is very manageable

Reply
Elizabeth Johnson says · 05.18.14

Oh… one more thing… pertaining to the water waste in the shower.

Get your hair very wet, then message in your pumps. While the WEN is working, continue with your shower, do everything you normally do then rinse the product out. Reapply the last pumps. You can always turn the water off for the few of minutes you want it to work (and continue to massage it in and through your hair)… then rinse thoroughly. I don’t find that I am using a ton more water, more yes, but not unrealistically so….

Again… I couldn’t be more pleased, but then I’ve taken the time (and yes, expense) to get on the learning curve as to which formulas are doing what to my hair!

Good luck, it really is a GREAT product!

I have long wavy hair, which tends to be dry at the ends and a bit oily at scalp. Try Shielo’s Hydrate or Smoothing Conditioners – they smell good without being over-powering, and give a level of moisture that is neither too light or too heavy for me. Anyone interested in more organic hair products should give these a try.

Gee, what a $$$ racket. Why or why do you need to much? Try pumping that much olive oil into your hair. I bet you would find a little dap or is that pump would do you. So, what is it with 16 plus huge pumps plus of Wen? Maybe someone should just report back on skipping shampooing and just using a good conditioner. I bet it wouldn’t over shampo the oil away and leave your hair shiny and weighty. As for me, I have oily hair and need to shampoo it daily. I know what oil and dirt do, aka sticks together. Old Chaz must have a Phd in chemistry if he made this stuff, look at those ingredients. I just do not see him whipping this up in a kitchen sink.

blog soon but have no coding skills so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience.
Any help would be enormously appreciated!

you don’t mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing.
I’ve had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out.
I do take pleasure in writing buut it just seems like the
first 10 to 15 minutes are generally lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints?
Many thanks!

With havin so much written content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright violation?
My blog has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced

You’re not using the product correctly. Plus, when you use WEN, don’t add styling products unless they are WEN related to your hair. That’s probably why it looked bad, plus your lack of correct amount of rinsing and water usage. Watch Chaz Dean anytime he is on QVC. He explains perfectly how the product should be used. It is amazing.

Honestly I have no idea what most of you are talking about.
For my hair I rinse it really good, put a big glob of wen in my hair and at the end of my shower I rinse it out.
I only need to wash my hair 1-2 times a week.
Before I started using it I HAD to wash my hair every single day.
Also my hair was so unmanageable because it was thin and pure static electricity.
Wen saved my hair.
I have also been using the same bottle for 2 months and still have enough left for a few washes. (My hair is shoulder length though)

But hey, everyone is different. It’s too bad more people don’t give it enough time because it really is a great product.

You didn’t read the instructions! You must thoroughly rinse it out. You do not need to waste water just use some common sense. Get your hair thoroughly wet, apply enough product for your hair type and length, add more water and “cream it up.” If you need to cleanse only once let this sit on your hair for the remainder of your shower. Otherwise rinse and repeat and let the second cleanse on for the rest of your shower. The longer the better but you can turn the water off during part of your shower! Then rinse it ALL out. Finally, use a small amount as a leave-in to soaking wet hair, to your ends ONLY. Or skip that part if you DON’T have dry ends or flyaways. Wrap a microfiber turbie or old t-shirt around your head for a bit to soak up extra water. Style as usual. There will be no build-up, no waxy feel, no itching, etc.

Reply
KJ says · 07.22.14

OH, also scrub your scalp really well while you cleanse before you let it sit for the rest of your shower. When you rinse it out, first add MORE water and scrub again, then rinse. It feels amazing and all that scalp massage is good for your scalp and hair growth!

I’ve used Wen for 6 weeks now, and I kinda liked it. Tonight was my first hair color appointment since I started using Wen. I told my stylist (who has colored my hair for 14+ years now) that I had been using Wen. She checked my hair and said my hair looked fine, no build up that she could feel. She used my regular formula of Redken Shades and applied it as normal. Then she sat me under the dryer (which she always does). When she washed my hair (with regular shampoo), there was NO color on my hair. My hair just did not take the color! She sent me home with some special clarifying shampoo with which to shampoo my hair, and I have another appointment tomorrow to try color again. Has anyone experienced color-resistance after using Wen?

I used ProActiv a while back and it was not a pleasant experience. My skin burned, itched, turned red. And on top of all that, it was abnormally dry [shocking because I’ve never had dry skin in my life].

I desperately needed something to get rid of my acne [which was located mostly on my forhead area] … ProActiv was terrible, as I mentioned before. So I decided to buy the Citrus Clear Sensitive Kit (Face Wash & Moisturizer), and this was the best decision ever. I noticed results as soon as 2-3 days. My acne is all gone now. It’s only 2 steps, whereas ProActiv was 3. My skin is great right now

I have mixed opinions about this product. I ordered the sample product for $29.95 with free shipping. Instead I received the huge package that included 5 large bottles and a few small samples. My bill was $99. I called and complained about the confusion. The rep told me to return the product and they would cancel my subscription. I told them I didn’t want to pay the shipping cost to send it back. So the rep made a deal with me. She said to keep the products and they would cancel my subscription.

Ok, now…using the product was great for me. I have very short curly hair. The instructions are to use 7-9 pumps. Really? Instead, I only use 1 – 2 medium size pumps, after rinsing my hair thoroughly. I usually put a color rinse in my, and I find that my color stays in longer and my hair is shinier and rich looking.

After awhile I do notice that the oils in my hair tend to build up. So I will start using a Clarifying shampoo once a month to totally get rid of ALL shampoo and oil buildup! Then use the WEN again.

I think I got a pretty dammed good bargain. I got 5 large bottles with a few sample products, a neat carrying case for $29.95. Sooo I’m not complaining…..

I have used wen for a few years now. I love how it cleans my hair. But, I’ve had a flare up of eczema on my scalp and eyes. I believe it’s the wen that has prevented it from clearing up. I’ve only been using it as conditioner now. Using a tea tree blend with zinc for shampooing. Thinking I’m going to cancel my subscription because I have so much product in my closet and it keeps coming. Very disappointed.

I have been using Wen for three years so I am definitely a “Wen girl”. My hair is colored and I use a flat-iron everyday. My hair is dry- probably because of coloring and ironing. I have to say, I LOVE Wen. When I first started using the cleansing conditioner, I did not use it properly and I did not get it wet enough in the shower. When I learned to use it correctly, it worked a small miracle on my hair!

My hair has gone from being fly-away and frizzy to smooth in texture. It is shiny and has plenty of volume. I also use Moroccan Oil on the ends to smooth it down completely. The trick to Wen is using enough and getting it wet enough to move through the scalp for cleansing.

Do NOT order from Guthy-Renker or whomever is selling this on a monthly subscription. Just go directly to Chazdean.com and order that site as needed.

I will never use regular shampoo EVER AGAIN!

Oh, Wen strips your hair alright…right off your head! For those with the frizzies from thick or “bushy” hair the thinning aspects probably work. But for us fine thin girls BEWARE!!!! I’m still trying to repair and regrow hair…might have to seek expensive and drastic measures soon as I’m not sure I’ll ever have a full head of hair again!!!! And the excessive shedding persists! I am appalled that there is not a warning, but it’s the only product Guthy Renker has been more than glad to cancel shipments of for me. Smelling some lawsuits? Should!

I just used the Fig for the first time today. It’s probably too early to be making hard and fast judgments on it, I can say that I love it so far! I have very thick, straight coarse hair. I also don’t use heat, styling products or bleach/color it and I wash my hair once a week. So, not your typical American when it comes to hair care. Over the past 5 or 6 years I’ve ‘trained’ my scalp out of over producing oil. I watched an official video and used it exactly the same way, right down to the 1/2 pump as a leave in. My hair was unbelievably soft and shinier than it has been in maybe 15 years. On top of that, my scalp, which can get a bit flaky, looks wonderful. I’ll be keeping an close eye to see how it works with continued use but for now I couldn’t be happier!

Two comments about Wen… you have to rinse really, really, really well or your hair will look lifeless… and secondly the idea is to STOP using your other products. It is all or nothing. If you continue to use your other styling products, hairspray, etc… it won’t work for you. The idea is that if your hair is more manageable, you won’t need all of those other products anyways.

I will say that it probably isn’t for everyone, and it is expensive but as a friend explained it to me, we all have something we are willing to spend a little more on (clothes, handbags, shoes, makeup, etc). For some of us, it’s our hair… and if you are buying salon haircare products, you’re still spending quite a bit.

I started using it a couple of months ago and I would say I have shampooed probably half or less as much as I used to using other shampoos. I have very thick, long, coarse, curly hair and a while back I started noticing that I was losing it in one spot and my hairdresser told me I was crazy (because I have enough hair for three people). At that time I was using those Suave shampoos. I have used and tried about everything to tame this mess and WEN was given to me to try out. I have since signed up to receive it monthly. Normally when I would flat iron my hair, I could let it go without washing it for a few days but it would soon start looking greasy and have to be washed. Since using WEN, I can wear it that way for a week before I have to wash it again. You’re not supposed to use it every day and I only use about half as much as they say to use (even with the amount of hair I have). My hair feels like it has become thicker where it was coming out before and it is very much more manageable and shinier. I also have to use less “product” than I had to before. I am saddened to discover so many people have had hair loss issues but I have to wonder if it isn’t from something else. I have had the opposite effect.

I have to agree. It stinks that products are not the same for everyone. I have had great results with WEN.

I recently bought the Tea Tree version and didn’t like it because it left a residue on my hair and felt waxy.. but the very first go i had with WEN was awesome. So i just bought that same scent again. I use the mask every couple of weeks and it works amazing.

My best friend says my hair has always been soft and shiny, but i think that it’s even softer now. I bleached my hair for 5 years and now i’m over it, so my ends are FRIED! My hair is lighter and actually holds a style better now that i use this. It’s a little expensive, but if you think about it, i don’t wash my hair but maybe 2-3 times a week now because i don’t have to. Before i would go two days and my scalp would be screaming for attention. I have very bad psoriasis and dandruff issues and since i have been using WEN (about month and a half now) my scalp is much happier and i don’t get flakes like i used to and the itchiness has almost gone away completely.

As with most products for hair and face everyone is different. I also have very bad acne and people SWEAR by Proactive. It did not work for me. =( So i can understand and appreciate everyone’s comments because this is how a lot of people get information about products; other consumers. All i have is positive feedback. So even if you are curious, just try it. what is the worst that happens… you don’t like it and send it back and get your money back. They refund the $$ even if the bottle is empty! which i had to send back a half full bottle of the tea tree. Money was refunded and i bought another bottle with it.

I used Wen for the first time about two hours ago. I’m half tempted to go bak into the shower and wash it out. I used the Almond Mint smelly one and not only does the shampoo smell like cough medicine but it also left my hair dry and tanglier than before. The only reason it’s not as bad as it COULD have been is because after I used the conditioner I added my own conditioner.

I also used a leave in conditioner that came with my little kit hoping that would help with the dryness as well. Not really….

However, I wanted to try it! So I was still excited despite the fact it wasn’t working out so far. I assumed it would be an over time thing. Thirty minutes after my shower I feel the skin on my back begin to tinkle. My neck began to tingle and itch as well. I asked my mother to look at my back and she said it looked like I’ve been clawing at myself. I couldn’t even reach that far down my back.

So far, it’s been 2 hours and I still am trying to give my hair a chance to dry. It usually takes my hair a day/night to completely dry but the fact that I had to change out of my old shirt because some of leave in conditioner rubbed into my sweater makes me want to wash it out sooner. Now the rash is spreading to my shoulders

Over all, I’m still trying to like it. I’m still trying to let my hair dry but now my face and cheeks are beginning to tingle along with my scalp… I might wash it out with my normal shampoo before the night ends unfortunately 🙁

If you have sensitive skin and/or allergic to a majority of flora out there in the world like myself, avoid this product. Save yourself the money and irritation 🙁

Great review. However, I think you are missing the point of Wen and similar shampoos. This is for people who are concerned about what they put on their hair. It has no detergents, so it is not designed to strip away all the extra artificial product you were putting in your hair. You said you applied root lifter day after day, but maybe did not realize that Wen does not wash that out. So of course you were feeling more and more build-up. To really benefit from an “all natural” style hair are routine- you literally have to go all natural. I use Wen and actually came across this review searching for something even more natural. Currently I wash with Wen 2X a week and finish with some organic coconut oil on my ends (I have very long hair). Between these washes I use the “no-poo” method. I have had oily scalp, dry hair that I hated my whole life. Since starting this routine, I flippin love my hair lol. Not to mention how worry-free it is.

Common sense would tell you that since Wen is a “heavy moisturizing cleanser”, that it wouldnt make sense to wash your hair with it everyday. I have natural curly hair and do not wash everyday with the regular shampoo and conditioners due to over conditioning and getting that heavy build up feeling. This product is supposed to help with manageability and conditioning. Saying this, would you heavily moisturizer your hair everyday? No, it would get greasy and weighed down. So please explain why you would wash everyday with this product? The girls I work with (yes from fine straight hair to dry damaged hair) love this product and their hair really does look great and healthy. They do say they only wash 2-3 times a week. Im thinking of alternating using wen maybe twice a week and using my normal tresemme the other days. Ill be starting this monday.. will keep yall updated

The last time I went to get my hair don’t, my hairdresser of 24 years asked what the hell I was ding to my hair. I told him I’d been using Wen. He had used a good shampoo to deep clean my hair and it was completely dried out. I said that it airways feels like it’s so soft. He explained that the Wen was building up on the outside of the hair and actually causing damage.

Thank you for your honest review of WEN! Because of your review, I went on to QVC and bought two bottles…just to try for myself. I have to say, I was still really leary, because I have very fine, thin hair and the last thing I needed was to lose more hair. I have now been using the product for 3 months. From the first use, I really have to say, my hair looked, felt and behaved better. My hair before WEN, would get very oily and I was shampooing my hair daily or more. By the time I got out of the shower to blow dry my hair, half my hair would already be dry. I have crazy cowlicks at the temples and crown of my head. I called them my bald spots because that is exactly what they looked like, no matter how much I tried to blow dry, flat iron, tease, spray etc them out…by the time I walked outside they were back. With WEN, my hair keeps the moisture, stays wet for longer, so I can truly get my hair styled and bonus…it keeps the style without any additional products needed. I also found, I have less hair loss because I have no tangles in my hair, so it feels thicker now than ever before. Final test, I went back to my stylist at the salon, it had been exactly 3 months. When I told him I wanted additional highlights in my hair and a trim, before he took a look at my hair he said he wouldn’t do it, it was too soon. I did not tell him about changing shampoos. When I sat in the chair and he actually looked at my hair, he was blown away at how good the original highlights were lasting and how well my hair looked. He said my hair looked healthier than he has ever seen it (and he has been working on my hair for 10+ years)!!! He said it looked so healthy, he would give me additional highlights, he asked what I was doing different and of course I told him WEN. His reaction was, don’t stop using it. I follow the directions to a “T”, plus I now only wash my hair 2 – 3 times a week. I will still rinse in between to get rid of topical dirt, but my hair no longer looks or acts greasy between shampoos. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for your honest review…it’s what caused me to give it a try….I love my hair and am now a WEN girl!

I did not read all the comments but I know I had to add my opinion of WEN. I have been using WEN about 5 years or so. So with that said you can say I love it or I wouldn’t have used it this long right? Here’s the deal. I have thin, fine hair that would get oily on a daily basis, if I didn’t wash daily I had an oily mess! I started out using the Sweet Almond WEN and I have found a few things…. If you do not rinse well yes you will feel like there is product left in your hair. You do not have to rinse in COLD water, lukewarm is fine, I have even rinsed with out changing water temp! Shhh don’t tell Chaz Dean! I DO NOT use the recommended amount! If you don’t need that much don’t use it! I use about 3/4 – 1 pump of the gallon bottle pump and I have the small sixthirteen bottle that I use about 8 pumps of, again it’s NOT the recommended amount. A gallon bottle lasts me about 9-10 months! I’m using the sixthirteen more often here lately, especially during the summer. I’m finding that my hair is smoother and thicker, it’s improved greatly. It looks healthy and is silky soft! Your hair will go through an adjustment phase, it’s just like anything else that you do… exercise, changing skin care, eating healthier…. it takes time.

Howdy, I m a 29 year old male that has been teetering on trying wen simply because my chronic insomnia has blankly stared at wen infomercials for what seems like beginning of my memory, as though we are old friends that never see each other or even know we are still aware of outside what we speculate

But after reading through these responses and reviews (infomercial just ended) I am not even going to allow such curiosities be entertained by Chaz and his legions of web soaked models that look like wen is better than sex with Jared Leto under a full moon

My mom has done hair since I was a kid and thus I has access to products at stores like maly’s and cosmoprof that she gives me when she goes shopping for her clients salon needs. So I thought I’d share the products I live and swear by.
I have very fine dirty blonde hair and that is various layers falling between mid chin at shortest layers and 2/3 down neck.at longest layers. This is the first time in my whole life I have had long hair. Finally I have blue purple and teal dyes that sort of ombré from my natural blonde that I left about 5 inches of.at roots

Ladies it is ridiculously laborious work having cute long colored hair that you want to different styles with throughout the week, all with semi good to perfectly on point results. Granted it is sooooo worth it, long hair is beyond satisfying. To see that I can have more fun and creative hair styles than men are ever given by the short hair limits has been liberating . Of course I’m obsessed with nonconformist do-what-you-feel-in-your-soul-fashion, however I know not all people are this enthusiastic.

Okay these are e my long hair loves so far….

Shampoos: Kenra (volumizing and/or moisturizing) and then nioxxin for chemically treated hair

Conditioner: identically the. same as above shampoos except joico’s k-Pam reconstructor is a MIRACLE worker . After my crazy up-do days it is the only way to make my hair silky and bouncy again.

The biggest secret though is in after shower products that have changed my life:
First is Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Serum (wow for detangling and smoothness !!!) Anduntil 3 weeks ago aveda’s pure abundance style prep. This changed the volume of my hair that is inexplicably amazing for over a year now. But just this past month I switched to/added in aveda’s volumizing tonic. Strangers friends and family have been asking how my hair got endless fullness and body. I can’t stress enough, go to aveda and spend the money. My mom has no aveda access and I still refuse to try anything but.

Don’t do wen, it sounds awful. If you have long fine dyed hair that is damaged from flat irons or blow dryers and livr to style with different products my regimen should take out all the dryness and heaviness from products. I condition every day shamepoo every other.

Anybody have any color maintaining shampoo or conditioner they can recommend for nonperson the vegetable based dyes (currently need) and/ or permanent blonde hair dye (before I get my summer blonde hair switch over done) And any medium hold with movement hairspray recommendations ?

Before I began using my hair was dry, damaged and falling out. I tried it and lived the results after 30 days. But after the first shipment they began deducting monthly (28 days not 30) they caused an overdraft. I called angry and was canceling they asked me to fax in statement showing and promised me 20% off for life. Sounded good so I said what the heck. Waited and waited for iverdraft credit ( uh it never came) new shipment came with supposedly the same order w/20% disc well I got 40% less product. I was angry called to cancel and wanted the rest of products I paid for. They sent me one but never got the conditioner. Very disappointed in the company gimmicks. Now I will have to find new product . Any suggestions please

The last time I went to get my hair don’t, my beautician of 24 years asked what the hellfire I was ding to my hair. I let him know I’d been utilizing Wen. He had utilized a decent cleanser to profound clean my hair and it was totally dried out. I said that it aviation routes feels like its so delicate. He clarified that the Wen was building up on the outside of the hair and really creating harm

Hair used to be thick but the last 2 years, it was thinning ( had split ends the year before that). I have oily hair and I am in high school. Tried many brands and didn’t get any improvement so finally decided to give Wen a try.

The first week, it was ok. I don’t use any products on my hair and always let it air dry and is washed at night ( an hour or 2 before bed). The result is that the ends looked healthier but no added volume on the top of the head. If this continues, I would say it’s a success but it didn’t . By the second week, hair got really greasy which is worst than when I was using other brands.

So by the midle of the 2nd week, I used a gentle shampoo on the top of my head to do the 1st wash which was really quick and with a few rubs with my finger pads and was washed off. This to remove oil and any environmental dust from throughout the day. Then I used Wen to throughly cleanse gently. It didn’t help with greasy bair still being the result.

I will go back to my regular shampoo and use Wen 2x a week until it is all gone. I love what it did to the rest of my hair but not to the first 3-4 inches from the scalp.

16 pumps?! OMG! I use 3 for the first ‘wash’ and then, not every time, use 2 mid-shaft to the ends.

Here’s what works for me: I use it as directed/day one. Don’t need to wash it/day two. On day three of that week, I wash with shampoo (!!) and use a little bit (like one pump) WEN as traditional conditioner. On that shampoo/third day my hair is a-maze-ing.

I purchased a kit from amazon, so I’m not involved in any auto shipment programs and I really want to try the product, but I am not willing to lose my hair to see if I like it. Does your hair come back when you stop using it or are you damaged forever???? Help please in search for lovely hair. My hair is blonde and waist length I love to keep it this way just want it a little less frizzy and more bouncy it does have a slight natural wave to it. What say you, out there in the hair world?

This is a thorough, yet INACCURATE review. I have used Wen for 2 months now and have become convinced that it really works wonders for my hair. In the beginning, I was frustrated with it too. I didn’t follow the instructions on the bottle closely and just used it as an extra-rich conditioner. What the author of this post ignored about the bottle instructions is that you have to let your hair sit for at least a day or two (or more) between shampooing with Wen. I have straight, very damaged hair and fairly greasy scalp. What I am most impressed with Wen is that it makes my scalp less oily without washing it every day. It even gets rid of that foul odor of dirty oil on your scalp too. I think regular shampoo strips your scalp of natural oils and the scalp compensates this by overproducing oil which leads to the odor. But Wen gently cleanses while letting the essential oils stay in the skin so that it doesn’t have to produce more oil. One piece of advice: spend some extra time massaging Wen into your hair shaft and ends. It makes the hair extra silky. Wen really works. I just hope it’s less expensive.

I have very long hair and it becomes very difficult to manage if it gets dry. Once per week, I use the Shielo intensive Hair Mask and it has not only repaired my damage hair (which use to always tangle) but has also give them a smooth silky shine. It appears as if there has been a coating of cream on your hair which is protective layer.

I worked for Wen. And it gave me mixed results mostly good. My hair used to be all over my clothes my carpet my brush my sink I was always having hair on me before using wen. I had been concerned about this before. I used wen the first time I had a lot of small clumps of hair come out. That was sweet almond mint. I had very damaged hair before. And so I switched to fig which was for my hair type.i haven’t had the problem since. I was aware of the lawsuit. I loved the way my hair looked though immediately everyone noticed it!! And honestly my hair with wen doesn’t fall out and get on my clothes and carpet and in the food I cook. It isn’t falling out in the bathroom sink where I brush my hair. I will say I feel my pony tail us not as thick. But it is shinier. It grows it is silkier and stronger. I use it 2-3 times a week and I use a lathering shampoo a couple times a week. It is true the need to wash my hair every day is not an issue I can skip a day easily and it feels great. I love the styling products but mostly I love the 613! I think Wen has done a lot for my hair I love it but I feel bad to hear the negative experiences with it. As far as canceling your membership they have to it is required that they do. If you ask they will. I understand that did not happen in the past but that has changed. I hope you have a better experience with the company and product and please get their comb and brush they are amazing must haves!!!! Employees are not allowed to comment on the case but I am no longer an employee. I just wanted to say what I have been wanting to share. I really loved representing the product and I enjoy using it. When I see people react to the dramatic change in my hair I tell them it is Wen! Everyone loves the smell of my hair from the Wen they always stop to smell it! I am thankful my hair isn’t all over my carpet ruining my vacuum and all over my vanity people who know me know that has always been an issue with me. I don’t know why hair came out when i first used it. But that has not happened since I got the right formula.

I have used wen for about 4 years now, I normally don’t do a whole lot with my hair as far as styling products go, but I have to say in light of all the “hair lose” controversy, I personally LOVE wen and it has done nothing but wonders for my hair, I went to cosmetology school straight out of high school so I was very skeptical about trying it. There is a learning curve it took me a good full bottle to really get the hang of it. I order straight from QVC it’s a lot cheaper and the kits are killer. As far as hair loss goes show me one hair product that someone hasn’t had hair loss from, just my personal opinion but there has to be something your allergic to or that just doesn’t agree with your scalp to make you lose hair. It isnt for everyone but there isn’t one product out there that is, everyone loves dry shampoo,me included, but I can’t use it but at the most once a week because it irrates my scalp and I have more hair shedding than normal, but I know that is a don’t use it, even as much as I love it. I would say if your wanting to give it a try but give it a fair try not a once or twice use and your done. QVC also gives your money back even if the bottle is empty.

I used it twice when I stayed at my sisters house for a few days because she uses it. We both have fairly fine hair but hers is straight and mine is curly. I didn’t follow the instructions and she didn’t have a pump but I used probably about the size of a quarter. I didn’t repeat either. I just massaged it into my scalp and ran through to the ends then left it for the rest of my shower and rinsed. I found it left my hair soft and light and it wasn’t oily the next day so I didn’t wash it again until the day after that. My sister does that I think and then every four days or so will use a regular shampoo. My only concern with it is that you cant buy it by it self without all of the other products which i don’t think I would use as quickly.

Beware though, conditioner can clog pores and I have traced back small hard bumps back to Wen. I used a high frequency machine to get rid of them but did not loose any hair. I thought it was a tick since it came back in the same place until I zaped it with the HF mach. It is like a small pimple with a hard top.

The real way to use Wen is to apply 1/2 the amount, work it thru well, rinse (cool water), reapply the other 1/2 & work it thru, then shower. (Leave it on your hair 3-5 min). At end of shower, rinse it REALLY well (cool water again, til my hair “squeaks”). You can reapply a small amount to your ends only as a leave in conditioner, which I never did. You need to rinse it totally out, just as any shampoo. Have used it for years. I saw Chas Dean suggest using it this way on QVC, & this works much better for me. Thanks for reading this.

I have used WEN for over 12 years. It totally changed my hair. My hair is now straight and so shiny
. The mistake women make is using the directions on the bottle. Ignore them, you will soon learn how much WEN you need to put in you hair. I use a very small amt and second application even less. I don’t rinse all of it out of my hair final rinse. And put a little on the ends of my hair. My indicator that you have enough product in your hair is you can run your fingers through your hair easily. The first thing I do is apply first application when I get in shower using 1 pump, sometimes doing another maybe 1/2 a pump, I wet it, suds it up,leave on and shower. Near end rinse that off, pump once leave on, end of shower rinse but not all of product. You need to be running you hands through it to be sure they slid easily through you hair. I then just barely pump get a tiny amt rub on palms then apply on ends with my hands. That’s it. I have been bleaching my hair since I was 16, I am now 67. My hair is naturally dry and wavy and coarse. Now it is straight, shiny, and feels so soft.. You just have to learn how much to apply when you shampoo. As you read, I use very little, I just learned that through experience. I never run out of WEN, it is that important to me. I don’t wear make up much but have to have my WEN!

I have very dry hair and I style it every day. I only shampoo with Wen twice a week. I love it! I’ve been using it for about 10 years.

I feel like some people don’t have a good results perhaps because they don’t rinse enough. The instructions say thoroughly rinse your hair before shampooing with it. And rinse it thoroughly after. I pay attention mostly to rinsing the scalp but like to leave a little bit on my hair.

I absolutely use product on my hair for styling! I have great results!
