Remember when I finally got my hands on some Poppy King for J.Crew lipstick and the day I shared it with you all it went out of stock?
(The great thing is this lipstick is layer able. The more layers, the deeper the color. This was only one swipe.)
Yeah, I was pretty disappointed too.
Rumors are flying that it's coming back, but also that it's over forever, so I'm going to give up on them re-releasing it for now.
In the meantime, however, walk yourself right into J.Crew and pick up some of this Chili Flake lipstick by Face Stockholm for J.Crew. It's almost identical, except it's a little bit more orange.
It's the perfect bright orange-y red to pump up a neutral outfit.

And now I'm going to share with you the makings of a lipstick post.
I take 99.9% of my photos with my tripod, a wireless shutter release, and attempts at the best lighting possible. And a lot of luck that I'm standing in the frame.
But let me tell you---there are a lot, a LOT, of really great (read: awkward) photos that are snapped during my photo-taking.
My attempt at capturing this lipstick left me with a multitude of awkward photos to choose from, so I thought I would share so we can laugh together.
These have either a made up caption, or absolutely what I'm thinking during these shots.
"Maybe if I look off into the distance. . .they'll take my lipstick seriously. "
"I'm over this. Plus? My eyes are expressionless 100% of the time."
"Let's pretend that Grits is doing something cute in the corner."
"Maybe if I laugh at something hilarious in the window I'll look like one of America's Next Top Models!"
"Focused on the wrong thing."
"Cropped. Dang it".
There you have it.
What really happens during the making of a lipstick post.

LOVE the lipstick color...and that you shared your hilarious/semi-awkward photos of the progress of photo taking :)
ReplyDeleteLove your sense of humor!
ReplyDeleteGreat color, funny captions under your awkward yet beautiful pics!
ReplyDeleteThat is one bold lipstick shade.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, love color & your awkward photos! :) I'm always looking for a great, orange-y/red lipstick. However, I'm more of a stain lady. Do you have any stains you prefer? Right now, I'm using the Stainiac from my Birchbox - Prom Queen.

I love this color! It's so bright and fantastic.
ReplyDeleteAnd the out takes? They all look really good! except for the wrong focus, obviously.
You are gorgeous! Love the color and the lol-worthy outtakes! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYour first picture, you write that you have OPI's Cajun Shrimp nail polish on.. then the next few photos where you are holding your lipstick up, no nail polish! ;-)
ReplyDeleteBut really - this is a great color on you. You're beautiful! :-)
That first photo was from the original posts about a month ago. :)
Deleterandom question: where did you get the wireless shutter release for your camera? I have been looking for one for eons for my husband and I'm not having any luck. Hmmm. Maybe I should google.
ReplyDeleteI got mine at Wolf Camera
DeleteI bought mine from Amazon, just check that it works for your camera.
DeleteIt looks REALLY GOOD! I think I like it better than poppy king!

ReplyDeleteI've been eyeing this very lipstick...might have to take the plunge:) How funny that you explain how you take your pictures in this post, as I was reading I was wondering it. Great job! PS: Love when you do makeup posts, we have similar coloring, so I get a lot of great advice!!
ReplyDeleteLove this color Kate! It's the perfect mix of red and orange!
ReplyDeleteand your photos are too cute for words =)
So question - how do you optimize your lighting? Whenever I do this something just seems off.
ReplyDeletedoes any one know of a red red color? not an orange red. or a pink red. but a true red... like the opi nail color.. color or minnie?
ReplyDeleteRed Apple Red by OPI is a really great red.
DeleteOops! I meant Big Apple Red.
Deletesorry i should clarify :) does anyone know a red red lip stick?
Delete@Chadzgirl .. I just recently found a great blue based red lipstick. It is a true red. I am not normally blonde but have a lot of blonde in my hair now because I am struggling to cover early graying. I found this color at Ulta. It is by Smashbox and it's called Grenadine. It in the Be Legendary line of lipsticks. They also have an Ulta look a like in their line. It doesn't really have a name but it's number 202. I didn't try it on but it is similiar. I was looking for something that stayed put so I went with the $19 Smashbox lipstick. Hope this helps. http://www.smashbox.com/products/search/esearch.tmpl?search=grenadine

This is hilarious! Did you only paint the nails on your left hand??? Too funny.
ReplyDeleteThat first photo is from about a month ago when I wrote the original post!
DeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeletelove that color, kate! so pretty!!
ReplyDeleteAll your pics are still cute!
ReplyDeleteI'm still laughing hahahaha
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous color -- very bold, but definitely a fun color to try. I love your out-takes, too! Lol, very very cute.
ReplyDeleteI love your sense of humor and great choice in lipstick!
ReplyDeleteGreat colour! Thanks for sharing how you take your pictures- I always wondered that! You are a great photographer considering that you are taking pictures of yourself! I have a remote for my camera- not sure if that's the same as a wireless shutter release but I need to learn how to use it so I can take great pictures like you do!
ReplyDeleteLike the lipstick on you Kate...me it would loove hideous, Orange and me do not agree!
ReplyDeleteQUESTION: NEED HELP! Any products that can help with keeping the curl in your hair? Other than using the Aquage for texture....I curled once today....droop in 15 mins.....finished makeup and curled with a tighter iron, left alone in the tight curls and ate a salad, and came back 15 minutes later...droop again but do-able. I loaded up the Kenra 25 and went on my way but I'd love to have the tighter curls stay much longer. I'm buying duck-bill clips tomorrow. Sad, I used to have easy ti curl hair and now...not so much! Thanks!
Funny captions to your pictures!! Thanks for sharing!! I needed that chuckle!!
ReplyDeleteWhat cut do you recommend for fine, thin hair that is below the collar bone? I am having an issue deciding to go short or keep growing it. I feel like I am never happy with my hair? Approximatly an inch needs to be cut.
ReplyDeleteIf these are your "awkward" photos I am NEVER posting mine!! haha
ReplyDeleteI loved this post, but mostly I liked laughing with you. So thanks for being awkward. And thanks for being willing to show us that you can be awkward. And one more thanks, thanks for showing us a fun lip color. Okay, that's all the the thanks I can manage.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day! :)
You're funny. I can't bring myself to step out in the bright lipsticks....yet. I'll put one on and walk around the house and right before I leave the house I wipe it off.
ReplyDeleteI just had to tell you that I'm loving your bangs growing out. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the next top model pic. You look like you're on a talk show, in a cute way. (not like your husband just slept with your best friend and they're telling you on tv way) sorry...did this comment just get dumb? Anyway, you look good Kate!
ReplyDeleteYou take such beautiful pictures and the captions are hillarious! I'm too scared to try something that bright, but it looks so good on you. Maybe I'll check out the makeup counter at the mall and try some on before I purchase anything :) Thanks for sharing!! I always look forward to reading your blog and seeing your pictures!
ReplyDeleteHave a good day

Love this color! I have something similar in Mary Kay's lipgloss called "Mango Tango". I would love to see a comparison between the two. The Chili Flake appears to be more of a matte finish whereas the Mango Tango is more shimmery.
ReplyDeletecan you dish on your make up?
ReplyDeleteand how to apply the eyeshadow? it looks great but i need some lessons on applying!!!!!
I actually think the 4th picture looks like an outtake from a reality show! like you paused mid- diary room or something. haha!
ReplyDeleteThe lipstick looks beautiful and i love seeing the behind-the-scenes dose of reality :)
ReplyDeleteI love your lipstick. I makes your teeth look so bright!
ReplyDeleteYou really look like in a reality talk show. :D
ReplyDeleteOMG! You really look fantastic wearing that lipstick, you look like a celebrity that can compete with Angelina Jolie's perfect lips. You are truly amazing. Keep it up sister!
ReplyDeleteMy chemistry always changes the lipstick color, so it never looks the same on me as it presents in the tube. My lips make color pink to the point that I buy brown lipstick in order to get something a little calmer than a loud mid-summer pink. Any advice?
ReplyDeleteYour photos are great...not awkward at all! I would have thought you were a lipstick model! Ha!
ReplyDeleteYou do know there's a lady who will make your favorite color lipstick for about $10-$12 Right?? All you do is mail her a small sample of the color and how you'd like it to be. Matte, Moist, etc., She custom blends a lot of colors for some people I know. I will get her name for you. She will custom blend to order your, Poppy King by J Crew if you send her a sample.
