Mac Eyeshadow Look Alike

Very Jane Giveaway

Let’s have a little chat about eyeshadow.

After many years of wearing it, I’ve found that the right shades and finishes can be really flattering and pretty, but the wrong shades can make you look like you have the flu.
Browns, creams, and nothing with red/orange/pink undertones works on me. As “cool” as I can get it, the better. (that phrase could also be my life goal)
I love Mac shadows. They apply beautifully, do NOT budge, and don’t spill all over your face as you are applying. All of those things are a win as far as I’m concerned.
Except for the price. They are $15.00 a pop, and that can add up quickly.
However, I do understand why they are priced like that–they are great quality and really pigmented. So you really get what you pay for.
Some would argue, though, that a great eye shadow primer can make nearly any eye shadow as high of quality as the pricey ones. And I’ve found that to be true sometimes.
In the case of Revlon’s 16 Hour Eye Shadow, I think that theory holds true. Plus, the colors are almost identical to Mac colors.

The Revlon palette that contains 4 colors costs about $5-7.99 depending on where you buy/promotions.
The total cost for 4 Mac eye shadows is $60.00. Scary.
(also, I definitely used a calculator for that math. that is also scary.)

Here is a look at how the colors match up:

Phloof is a little bit warmer than the white in the Revlon palette, but the other colors match up almost exactly.

The color that is not labeled is from the Revlon palette.

Pretty darn close, right?

The first noticeable difference between the Mac shadows versus the Revlon shadows is the way they apply. I found that the Revlon shadows were much messier and were prone to crumbling onto my cheeks as I was applying. I guess that isn’t a big deal if you do your eyes first, but still–I’m not interested in “cleaning up” while I apply makeup. I’m sure with practice, and the right brush, I could do a better job. I’ve never had that issue with Mac shadows, so I appreciate how easy they are.
Secondly, it seems like the Revlon colors have a bit more shimmer? I use that word lightly because they aren’t extremely shimmery, just more than Mac’s colors.
Lastly, they apply slightly lighter than the Mac shadows. This could be due to a pigment difference, or just the quality of the shadows. But if you start with a great eyeshadow primer, you may just need to layer it slightly more to look closer to Mac’s shadows.
*some of my favorite eye shadow primers are this one, and this one

So what about you? Are you a name brand eye shadow purchaser? Or do you save a little and just invest in a good primer?

*this is not a sponsored post, but simply my opinion on these products.

Loreal makes a great taupe called classic Khakis. It’s a duo and cheap. Very matte and not shimmery. Just perfect.

Kate,
I think a primer is a must (thanks for showing the bareminerals one, i use there make up and never noticed the had one!). I use name brand eye shadow because I can’t stand how others get all over my face, like you said. I make up for the expense in my other daily make up. For instance, my eye liner is the Ulta brand and I love it! My mascara is Covergirl Lash Blast Volume Blasting. Like all that “BLAST” in there? Lol. I do use bareminerals face make up, but that stuff last forever. I think at the end of the day everyone want something that will stay on and not break.

I’ve found that Clinique’s eyeshadow always broke. No matter where I kept it, they broke and I finally gave that up. I have Mac eyeshadow, Bareminerals and Estee Lauder.

I think it makes a difference :). Also, a good brush!

Urban Decay makes a wonderful eye primer!!! I really like the Bare Minerals Face Primer, as well as a face primer made by Mary Kay!!! I have not tried the facial primer by Urban Decay. However, I am sure, after using their products, that their primer would be a good choice as well.

I bought a set of Two Faced shadows a while ago and I love them! They came with Shadow Insurance which is a great primer. I did notice that when I tried to use a cheaper brand, it felt chalky almost? Needless to say I’m addicted… good thing makeup lasts me a good while 🙂

Nice post! I like the comparison you did on your hand 🙂

I was also going to post about Mary Kay eyeshadow. The pigments are nice and while small they last a long time. I have both MK and Mac shadows and find that MK blends just as nicely.

I am a believer in paying up for higher quality eye shadow. I try to keep my collection down to just a handful of flattering, versatile neutrals that I use all the time. Although MAC is pricier than drug store, it is not as pricey as Bobbi Brown or others, so I think it’s the best value for your money. I used to be a Painterly Paint Pot addict but I have recently switched to Urban Decay Primer Potion, which I find works better for oily lids.

Reply
Rachel says · 07.12.12

I’m curious to to see if Kate has a favorite plum color too. Mine is an eyeshadow duo by Clinique, Beach Plum. The purple color can be applied lightly for a more subdued look or more heavily and the golden neutral color that comes with it is really pretty all by itself for just a quick sweep of color on a day when you’re in a hurry!

Reply

Most of my eyeshadow tends to be ULTA brand, but I did splurge on a quad pack of Chanel and find it is now my everyday go-to because it goes on so much better and stays on. It is expensive, but lasts forever. Check out Chanel quad packs: Vanites or Enigma for great plums/purples. Try them on and wear them for a day before you buy, the colors will surprise you. Good luck.

LOVE this post! I do find that the Revlon falls to the cheeks, but I have found applying with clean fingers reduces that! As you have said before, “fingers are cheap” and rubbing in the shadow really helps it stay in place. I just have to apply a little more. Also, I smudge a little with a Q-tip. It blends it while taking off the excess.

Thanks for the comparison!

Love your blog Kate! I’ve been reading it for a few months and especially enjoying your hair tutorials and 30with30 challenge.

I also love MAC makeup – my go-to colours for everyday are Shroom (similar to Phloof)and Kid (a soft matte brown). In case you or your readers don’t already know, I thought I’d mention that MAC has a “Back to MAC” program where, if you return any 6 empty containers for recycling (e.g. lipstick tubes, blush containers, eyeshadow pots, mascara tubes – really anything), you get a free eyeshadow or lipstick. The program isn’t really promoted as much as it used to be when they first introduced it several years ago but it’s definitely still in place, at least in Canada. 🙂

Great reminder! I use this all the time…I think in the US you can just get a lipstick without an option to get an eyeshadow.

The Back to MAC program is great, but remember, you get a free lipstick at a department store MAC counter(like Nordstrom) and it is a free lipstick, lipglass, or eye shadow at an independent MAC store

As a lover of all cosmetics I don’t like to make an investment cause I hardly ever use the same shadow daily. I wouldn’t pay $15 for an eye shadow cause I like to change things up. The best eye-shadow that I have ever tried is The Body Shop eye shadows. They are $9, last about 2 years, they have great pigment and wear wonderfully!

Reply
Judy says · 07.12.12

I’ve never tried the MAC since we don’t have a local source close, but I did buy the Sonia Kashuk neutrals pallet you mentioned and I love it. It’s a good primer in a pinch…if I don’t want to dig out my Bare Minerals one…and the colors are very thick and solid.

Ulta has a Baked eyeshadow that goes on a little sheer without primer but lasts forever, with nothing falling on he face. Use primer and you get loads of color.

I love all makeup, but I agree that sometimes it’s hard to rationalize paying a lot for a small container of only one color. However, like with most beauty products, if you find a great one, the extra money can be worth it. I tried Buxom “Stay-There” eye shadow after a coworker recommended it and I’m so happy with it. The best part is that it’s waterproof and really stay put, all day, no matter what activities you’re doing. (Plus, all the colors are named after dog breeds- too cute!)

I’ll be honest – I don’t pay for brand name make up. I do use a primer but my make up is almost all L’Oreal. I don’t wear it daily (esp in the summer) and money is often tight so I can’t really justify spending money on make up that could be otherwise spent on something for the house or family.

I have been using MAC Paint Pot as a Primer since showed to me by a make up artist for my wedding!! LOVE this stuff! The Bareminerals within 6 hours creases on my eyes. I LOVE brand name eye shadows; MAC, BareMinerals especially. My MAC eye shadows last much longer – like 2 years and I wear them every day – so for me, worth the cost! All the others don’t pack the same pigment or coverage on my eyes. I get the rest of my mascara, eyeliners from drugstor brands and they work just fine for me…

Reply
Emily says · 07.12.12

I started using Mary Kay primer and eyeshadows. The colors (that I’ve tried) are great. I like them way better than any drug store brand that I’ve used and they’re priced really well, too ($6.50 each). They apply smooth, aren’t messy, and last all day.

And no, I’m not a Mark Kay rep, I just like the makeup (the lipstick is pretty fantastic as well).

GREAT POST!!! I use Bare Minerals makeup and love it; however, I am frustrated daily by the clean up that is necessary after applying the eyeshadow. I will definitely try the MAC ones. Cheap is good SOMETIMES, but quality counts for sure!!! And I’m sure the MAC lasts much longer than cheaper brands. One note…I got a sample of the Bare Minerals primer…tried it and my eyes were red and swollen for days. Sensitive skin maybe!?! I have found the Bare Minerals mineral veil is excellent for keeping your eyeshadow in place!!! No creases either. Where is MAC sold?

I love MAC products as well. One of the makeup artists in New York recommended using the Mac Paint in “Still life” as a primer, and I have been using it ever since. My makeup does NOT budge and each tube lasts at least one year. I also love Laura Mercier products- the eyeshadows are gorgeous and buildable, and my favorite primer is Flax; has a little pearlescence. They are expensive at $22 each, but they last a long time. I prefer to spend more on quality products, and maybe just have fewer products overall. (although I have too many, I admit…)

That’s funny Susanne because I was just going to ask if anyone has used Urban Decay (I’ve been thinking about getting the Naked–the newest one) but have never used it before. I only use MAC eyeshadow and liner (and make up for the rest of my face) now because I agree with you. They are a little pricey, but they stay on ALL day without any mess. I apply my make up at 7:00 a.m., work all day, go to the gym, and my make up is still on at the end of the day when I wash it all off. You gotta love MAC for that! And there are great colors! I do use a Mary Kay primer on my lids first as I’ve found it to be the best for me, but I have a MAC lid primer as well and use it too.

I learned in beauty school a neat little trick.. If you dampen your brush with water and then apply your eye shadow it will last longer and intensify the shadow!! Apply it how ever many times to brighten the color!! be careful to not over saturate the brush though! 😀 also..works quiet well with the pinky finger if your in a big hurry.

crazybluedaisy says · 07.12.12

If you press the eyeshadow on with a brush instead of swipe you will get less fallout on your cheeks, no matter the brand.

I have used Bare Escentuals for years. I will use just about anything but 95% of my shadows are still from BE. They last so long that I have to rarely ever buy shadow anymore so on the rare occasion that I need a shadow, I’d say it’s worth the extra cost of a extra pigment and quality ingredients.

BE does make REALLY good primers and I find that if I use that primer under anything, (even ELF) it holds.

I agree that a good brush can really make a big difference. And as far as primers go, I found one that I love! I’d tried the clinique primer and a MK primer with no luck…they still creased. 🙁 Then while going for some cheap retail therapy for crap I don’t need at the Dollar Tree, I found an ELF primer and thought for a buck I’ll give it whirl. Mary Kay Mineral Eye Shadows are a big hit with me, especially paired with the Eye Primer…..my shadow lasts up to 16 hours or longer(I have fallen asleep & was surprised to see my eye makeup look exactly the way I had fixed it 24 hours ago……ooops!) The only thing is you must let it dry well before applying your eye shadow. The tube lasts along time and for $12 bucks….it’s a win win for me!Of course having the right brushes to apply your shadows do play a very important part in the whole process too. And of course I use the MK Brush Set as well. 🙂

Wow! That is so crazy! I just started reading your blog and as soon as you showed the photos trying the lighter MAC makeup, my two daughters and I loved the look so much we hit Walmart that day and bought Moonlit! I’m always on the lookout for look-a-likes where I can to save $$. The look is exactly the same and we saved $50!
Thanks for sharing your great style. We have learned so much since reading your blog! Blessings.

I love how you tell where you got all your clothes and products! How do you put text on photos like that?

I use Urban Decay shadow primer but not every day. My favorite shadows are by Stila and Urban Decay but I also have the Revlon quad (the tall one, not the one you pictured) and I have never had an issue with it. I will say the higher end shadows have better colors, better pigment and stay longer. They last a long time because a little goes a long way. If you can afford it, go with the higher end product.
I have never used MAC. I should try it sometime.

Can you give us a specific video of how you use these shadows? Or refer me to a video that would work with these colors from your previous postings.
Thanks. Just found you on Pinterest! Great ideas!

I love my MAC shadows. They really are the best. I am thinking of getting the Urban Decay Naked palette… Lots of colors that I use for less $$$.

I am totally a MAC eye shadow snob. But honestly mine last me forever so I feel like the $15 price tag is ok–I just space them out so I’m not buying 5 at a time. Satin Taupe is one of my favorite colors ever. And I agree the primer is key–love MAC Paint in bare canvas, I’ve used that stuff for years.

I also love MAC and wear a bunch of their products….I’m curious as to opinions about their eye primer….I use the one in the pot ( I believe it’s Eucre). I’m not sure I’m happy with this lol…anyone think there’s better primer ???

These all look so great, but I am such a drugstore make up girl. I almost always use Maybelline.

I love NARS eyeshadow primer, think it is the best and came in a birch box a while back. I also splurged and got some Dior shadow for a special occasion and really love it, but SO pricey. For everyday, I’ve really liked the Elf line at target for shadow!

Great post, adding some Revlon to my shopping list to try.

I am a makeup junkie and have tried nearly every drugstore brand as well as higher end brands. I have oily skin and I swear by the Urban Decay primer several others have posted about, my eyeshadow lasts all day layered on top. I have the Urban Decay Naked palette and am in LOVE with it. I’ve also found the Bobbi Brown gel pot eye liner to be the absolute best there is!

This is the exact eyeshadow I use. 1. becuase we dont have a MAC carrier where I live and 2. I love clothes too much to spend 60 on make up.
I just apply my powder and blush after my eyes. Great alternative and great colors!

I use Urban Decay’s Primer Potion and have mostly BareMinerals. I love Mac but its really far away for me to buy them. Since buying the primer I enjoy buying cheap eye shadow such as the Wet n Wild Back to Nature palette to play with for fun.

I’m a Mac Girl through and through!. Revlon must have extra additives because it irritates my skin somethime. Plus Mac maybe more money but I can get a year+ use out of one tub!!

Perfect timing! I’m actually going this afternoon to find some dupes for Satin Taupe after seeing your other posts about it. Ive never tried MAC but I do prefer the more expensive brands. I actually love BeautiControl’s eyeshadows, especially Champagne and Caviar. I’m also wanting to try the Naked 2 palette.

I LOVE MAC eye shadow!!! My favorite right now is All That Glitters, it’s the perfect amount of sparkle and a great neutral! I also love the Urban Decay Neutral eye palette and their shadow potion primer. I think it’s worth spending the extra buck to get something that you love and that will stay put all day, even in the humid summer months.

I’m a huge fan of MAC! I actually received a ton of Revlon products (including about 20 eyeshadow quads) when i was an alternate in Allure’s beauty blogger of the year awards. My experience with this is that Revlon eyeshadow was not nearly as pigmented as MAC’s. Certain quads work better then others but in general, i much prefer MAC. Worth the money! I agree with the crumbling too! xoxo

Urban Decay is where it is at for me! I love their shadows and the primer is really good too. What I really love is their eyeliner and lip liners, because they ‘feel’ like they go on wet, but they are actually the pencil. They glide on so easily and have true stay power. I also got a stila eyeliner in last month’s birchbox, and I really like it too. It has some sparkle which is fun.

p.s. I have the U.D. Naked palette 1 and 2, and Kate I think you might really like them!

I’ve been doing TV work for years and I swear by MAC eye shadows. All the make up artists I’ve worked with do as well. They hold up great under lights as well as under everyday activity. Yes, they are pricey, but they really last. I tried a Stila eye shadow a few months ago and it totally crumbled. Sent me right back to MAC.

Oh man I can’t believe how cheap MAC is in America!! here (in Australia) it’s around $33 a pot! And our dollar is about on par with yours! We pay twice as much as you guys! Wow!

I still buy them though, for all the reasons you outlined. They are just such good quality. Plus a pot lasts me approximately a year even with daily use.

Hi Kate! Seeing your pictures of the MAC makeup reminded me of someone. This is a person who is amazingly inspirational and though I am at least 20 years her senior, someone I look up to. I really think the two of you would get along great. I’m talking about Talia Costellano, a 12 year old cancer victim who has a passion for makeup. I thought maybe you would like to check out this link: twitter.com/#!/TaliaJoy18. This girl is truly an inspiration.

P.S. Your blog is always so helpful, so thanks!
