Half Up Ballerina Bun

Today’s tutorial is a sleek and simple half up style that can be done on nearly any texture of hair.
Although my hair is curled, don’t hesitate to try it on straight hair!

The bobby pins I use in this video are professional quality. The brand is “Diane”. Ask your stylist if he/she will sell you any professional quality pins, or you can search for some at Sally Beauty Supply or other beauty supply stores.

Same here!! Is there any way that I can get more lift? I try to tease with a root lifter in but it never seems to work very well :/ I have long light blonde hair and it would be so fun to do some styles and get lift at the crown:) any tips?

I recently learned the answer to thus question. I have very fine hair and my pins just kept slipping out. My hairstylist friend gave me two of her professional ones and they did the job much better than the three I had been using.

Hi Kate! I, too, recently discovered your blog, and am soooo in love! You are the cutest thing ever. :-)

About your bobby pins–I have watched several of your tutorials this weekend. I was just wondering–why do you use black? Is that the only color that Diane makes?

And if I ever come to NC, you are SO cutting my hair!!

Thank you, Kate, for teaching me how to curl my hair. Also, thank you for all of your hair style ideas, I tried something new yesterday (a loose twisted side pony) and got OODLES of compliments at church – the cashier at Lowe’s even said to my girls, “When was the last time you told your mom she’s beautiful? You should tell her more often because it’s true.” What a compliment from a total stranger!

Thank you Kate! Another adorable style. You said this would also work with straight hair. Please show some of your styles on straight hair. I could definitely use photos or tutorials of straight hair styles – up dos, half up dos, anything that would work with straight hair that’s your length.
    Thanks!

Do you plan on any tutorials for shorter hair? I have a chin length layered bob and would love some ideas to change up the look while it’s growing. After seeing all your styles, I wish I hadn’t cut my hair!

How in the world do you use bobby pins without opening them with your teeth? Of course I hate doing that and with my thick hair they never stay in unless I criss cross them. Suggestions??

My daughter (age 15) has very thick, naturally curly hair. She wants to get more control over it and possibly create larger, softer curls. Is that possible with her type of hair and a curling iron?

KAAAAAAATTTEEE!!! I got my hair cut EXACTLY like yours this past weekend. I have a similar hair texture (a lot of fine hair) and I am blonde. Your hair is just super cute so I had to copy it. I brought your picture in and my hairstylist was able to give me a cut just like yours! I am thrilled and got 11 compliments at work today! Yes, I was counting. =) I just wanted to say thanks and that I will be practicing all of your wonderful, wonderful hairstyles! <3

Do you ever do hairstyles with mixed textures, say curls and crimped? I would love to see a tutorial on something fun and spunky for summer.

Hey Kate! I am in love with your blog! I check it everyday! I can actually style my hair instead of blowing it under everyday! How do you feel about wen? I thought I’d give it a try to help my hair.

Love this cute style. I have a Mommy/Son dance this weekend and this style would be perfect. I too would love some tips on how to get lift at the crown of my hair.

Hi Kate, thank you for this tutorial (and the others)! I used it for the morning, then added a second ballerina twist below to turn it into an updo later in the day :) I find your blog very inspiring – especially on those exhausting days where it is easier to do a boring pony tail. I’m going to add a link to your blog from mine when I post a pic of my hair :)
