The Fake Half Up

If I had to choose, I would rather wear my hair down vs. up. I like a lot of "up" styles, but I probably wear my hair down 90% of the time!
So I created this simple style to jazz up "down" hair a little and make it look like it's half up!
And the best thing about this style is that nearly everyone, with any hair length, can do this!

  4. Thank you so much for all the wonderful tutorials! They inspire me to try new things with my own hair instead of the same hairstyle every day. I love wearing my hair half up and I will definitely try this one out :)

  5. Perfect! I feel like I have to go all the way up with my hair or all the way down. This is such a cute incorporation of both!

  6. This seems really silly, but sometimes I struggle putting the bobby pins in my hair correctly, is there anyway you can do a close up video of it or maybe have any tips for me?

  9. Love this 'do! It looks super easy. I'm so jealous of how you curl your hair. Mine is so thick and I feel like it would NEVER look like this!

  10. Please share, was the necklace a recent Target purchase?

  11. I love that! I think it would be so much easier to do that rather than trying to get everything pulled back and pinned together neatly!

  12. I "cheat" with this hairstyle too! And is it bad if I say that your awesome necklace was a total scene stealer? ;-)

  18. I love this style and always try to pull my hair back this way, but I also think I must not know how to work a bobby pin correctly. LOL Super cute!

  19. Oh, I love this look! It's so chic and simple to do. And for women like me who have finer/thinner hair, I like that it gives the illusion of a half-up without moving so much of my hair to the back of my head.

  25. Help! I've used the Aquage website and have called the 7 salons in a 40 mile radius of my home, and I even called several salons close to my parents in Baltimore, no one carries Aquage anymore, let alone the uplifting foam. My next stop is coming into Raleigh ( I live over in Goldsboro, so I'm not too far). Before venturing the hour over, any ideas of Salons I can try? I know Raleigh is your area so I thought I would ask first. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Sure! That is a Target (I believe its Mossimo) tank. I have about 6-8 of those tanks since they are the perfect length and thin-ness!

  30. Hey Kate! I love your hair tutorials. Can you please add some that are cute with straight hair? It takes forever and a day to curl my hair and with 2 young boys running around, I'm not able to spend a lot of time on it. Thanks so much!

  31. Tried this today and love it! My first time doing flat iron curls as well and they turned out great! Love your site! Now an Aquage addict as well!

  32. beautiful as always. I REALLY wish I could find that necklace. I haven't seen it on Target's website. :(

  33. this may be a "dumb" question to "ask" but how do you get your hair to stay with just one bobbie pin? my hair ALWAYS falls out through the end (where it loops around) because it is bigger there, and i by all means DO NOT have think hair. So i have never had success at pulling my hair up with just bobbie pins unless im doing a poof in the front but then i use like 5 pins!

    1. One of the biggest reasons is the quality of bobby pins. I use professional pins. Ask your stylist if she'll sell you any, or you can check Sally Beauty Supply. Also, I use a lot of product in my hair which gives it a texture that works well with bobby pins. But, if it won't hold with just one, use two!

  34. Kate,
What is the best cut/style for fine hair? Currently my hair is long and I have bangs as well, but I just don't know that that's best because my hair looks limp all the time. Is it better to have a short cut with fine hair?

  35. I know I saw it somewhere on your site but I can't seem to find it. What is that awesome nail color???

  38. Hi Kate! Love your blog and tutorials! One question: how thick is your hair? I'm thinking about cutting mine but I'm afraid it won't do what I want it to cause its thin. Ivebeen told I have thin hair but a lot of it so...? Thanks!!

  39. Hi! I'm loving your tutorials. Thanks so much for posting them. I am not good with my hair. All I do is up or down and it's getting old. I have one question about the bobby pins. When you say put the bobby pin in toward the twist, is there any way you could get a close up of how you're doing that. I'm sure after a few tries I could figure something out, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I hate not knowing exactly how to do something. : )
