How to Wear a Headband

Headbands are a wonderful option for pushing your hair out of your face without always resorting to a ponytail. And the thin headbands are so classic and chic. This tutorial is going to show you how to place a headband so it's pretty but still functional.
It can be done on curly or straight hair, with or without bangs!

The only thing you need for this tutorial is a headband! Mine was a gift from Gussy at Gussy Sews. It's perfectly thin but adorned with a unique and adorable ruffle on one side. If you like what you see, here is where to get it

Refer to this post to see what's in my hair.

(shirt: j. crew, pants: j.crew, shoes: target fall 2011, jewelry: Elisabeth Ashlie {unavailable})

I store the headbands we make by placing 1 side of them in a mason jar! It's a great way to see the adornment of the headband and still keep them organized!

(none of the headbands you see here are for sale as we are getting ready for this! BUT there are 2 Gussy Sews headbands in there (the ruffle ones) and those are for sale here!)

  1. Were you spraying your hair with the normal Kenra 25 hairspray you use or was that something else? How much hairspray do you go thru? How long does a can last you? Love your hair & videos!!!! Thank you for taking the time!

  2. Can you tell us more about how this would work if we don't have bangs? Or if we have long bangs?? I haven't quite figured out how to do it without looking like my piano teacher from 1998! Thanks!! You're adorable! Love your blog!

  6. Oh, thank you!!! I've been trying to figure this out! I gave up and threw my headbands away! I'm going to have to buy some more now. :)

I got Kenra 25 this week and it made the most fabulous difference in my hair. I'm trying to be stingy with it because it is way pricier than my other hairspray, but I LOVE it!!

  11. I don't wear headbands for two reasons..... if metal or plastic, I get horrible headaches (pinches behind the ears) or if elastic, they slide off the back of my head!!! HELP! they are soooo cute and I love the look, but I can't seem to do it!

  12. Hi Amy -- our headbands are so comfortable, they won't give you a headache {promise!}. Our bands are fabric wrapped and are super lightweight!

  13. I have one Gussy headband and just ordered that charcoal dot one so I was excited to see it used here.
And yes Amy - these headbands are different! I have a big head and always get headaches but NOT from these.

I do have a question though...how old is too old for headbands? Thoughts anyone?

  19. Love this blog, Kate. I've been an avid reader for over two months now thanks to Pinterest! Can you advise...I'm now using all of your "daily products" and love them, but I am getting a crease at my scalp when I flat iron. I think it has to do with having the uplifting foam in. Not planning to stop using that--it's great, but I've tried holding the iron at different angles and still I get the line or crease. Any advice?

  27. Hi Kate, I just wanted to say a huge thank you. I found your blog this week and sat and watched your hair-styling tutorials. I then followed your advice and for the first time ever have been able to style my hair into a beautiful messy bun, a gorgeous ponytail and a lovely straightened style. Normally I tie my fine, long hair into a simple pony tail as it tends to lose shape and style very quickly. But I've been able to follow your tutorials to the letter and it's made a real difference to how my hair gets styled each day. I'm posting a blog post about your blog tomorrow (Friday, UK time) to let my readers know about you, alongside photos of my new "do"! It would be lovely if you wanted to pop by and take a peek at the miracle you've performed! Thank you Kate. Big hug, Em x

  31. I've got really thick full hair. It's kind of impossible to do the sweet curls you have. Any info on dealing with that, whether it's techniques or product would be greatly appreciated. LOVE YOUR BLOG!

  32. Your hair is gorgeous! I was wondering if you could do a tutorial for those of us without bangs. I have curly hair and no bangs and I am not sure what to do with it so I don't end up looking like my 8 year old daughter. LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog! Thank you!

  35. Buy Hairbands - Hairbands are always in fashion, and that's because there's a huge range to choose from, Hairbands are accessories that sit around the head.

  36. Love this! You'd think wearing a headband is simple but no! I have this terrible sickness of picking up headbands wherever I go but never wore them because I didn't think they looked right.

Really, really grateful for this tutorial!

    Sincerely,
    Headband Convert!

  37. I can't wear headbands because I wear glasses & the headband always sits right where my glasses are. But I love this dotted one, & you wear it so well :)
