The Chic Updo

Have we all seen this photo?
I see it all the time from brides, bridesmaids, or any other client going to a formal event.
It's beautiful.

So I used that as a little inspiration for a easy updo tutorial!

The Chic Updo

(Cream t-shirt is from Target)

*What you won't see in the video tutorial is the finish with hairspray. I try not to spray a bunch of hairspray with my camera lens open. So be sure to spray with a strong hold hairspray when you are finished!*

This may be a little bit more complicated than some my other tutorials. And it's really best on my length or longer. So if you have shorter hair and get frustrated, stick with half up styles for now!

You'll see photos of a cleaner updo and one that I messed up a little bit by rubbing my fingers over it.

(Yellow Dress is from Macy's

So make sure you go somewhere fancy and show off your new 'do!

  2. Oh my goodness, your hair is just always so gorgeous, and I can't help but absolutely love your pearls and yellow dress(?), too! Too cute. I can't wait to get home today and try this out. Thank you so much for the tutorial, and have a blessed Monday! :)

  3. THANK YOU!!!! This is a so cute! My hair is about your length and I usually do a messy bun but this is another really great option. Its so pretty! :-)

  4. Your hair is gorgeous and you make it look so seamless! You are very talented! I also love your yellow dress/top! Can you tell me where you got it!
Thank you for all of your ideas!

  5. This updo is precious! I love it. My hair is a little shorter than yours but I might try it anyway. I was wondering, do you have any suggestions for styling thick hair? My hair is a long bob. It just is difficult to style sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I recently use that same photo for inspiration, but it was when my hair was much longer. I cut off a lot of it, so now I will have to try styling it your way!

  7. beautiful work! it will be another pinterest success in no time :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. LOVE! I'll have to try this one, not sure if it will work - my hair is so darn heavy, the "half up" part would NEVER stay with one bobby pin! I'll have to experiment:)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Gorgeous! You are amazing! I have a question though, can this be done with long hair?? I would love to do something like this with my hair!

  10. I love it! Super easy too! I was watching your video and my 2 year old daughter comes up and says "pretty hair"... Too cute!

    Thanks for sharing!

  11. I always keep my hair in a short bob but for the past few months I've been letting my hair grow out, now it is almost to my shoulders. I'm at the point where I want to chop it all off again but since recently finding your blog you've giving me inspiration to keep growing it out. I can't wait to try all these styles. Thank you for all your tutorials, I love every style!

  12. So gorgeous! I think you should to a makeup tutorial or at least tell us what kind of makeup you use. Your makeup always looks flawless and effortless!

  13. I have been trying to grow my hair out for the past few months. My length is just a bit past my shoulders, but when I had my hair colored and "trimmed" last week (I am going to a new stylist... mine moved) she asked me about my layers. I told her I wanted to keep some of my long layers... well she didn't listen so well. So now I have a very short layer. I am having problems doing any kind of up-do... do you have any suggestions? I haven't tried curling it yet... I am afraid I will have a big fluffy mess and look a bit like a mushroom.

  14. You are a blessing to all hair-impaired women everywhere! Thank you for all the thought, time and energy you put into your blog. I just discovered you a couple of weeks ago and enjoy checking in daily. I've started using your Redkin regimen and my hair is looking and feeling MUCH better. Thanks to last week's tutorial my bangs are looking better too - despite my cowlick - yea! Now I'll be trying this pretty updo.

  15. I LOVE your hair. I would like to get mine colored similarly since I think we have about the same tones anyway. What do I need to tell my hair stylist? I really like how it's slightly darker underneath...not BAM! darker. :) Thank you for all the wonderful tutes! So glad I stumbled upon your site a couple of weeks ago!

  16. Dani: curling it will help when styling in an updo. And hairspray! But if you aren't happy with your layers, talk to your stylist and see if just a little bit of thinning or texturizing at the ends could help them lay flatter.

    Just a thought!

  17. Dani: see my Answers to Questions Hair Related page. Thanks!

  18. Absolutely darling!

I love the white and yellow top/dress too.

I wore one of your styles to church yesterday. Lots of complements. Not sure, again, all my hair would fit in this one but it sure is pretty.

  45. Love this but it's not working with my thick hair. My hair is the same length as yours but the pins won't hold the weight and thickness. Advice?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm having the same problem as anonymous...my hair is just a couple inches past my shoulders but when I "roll" it up it just falls out. Any tips?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anonymous: It might not work for thick hair. Try dividing the bottom section in half and doing it one at a time. Hope that helps!

  48. I don't usually spend much time doing my hair and if I have an event, I usually get someone else to do it. But last night I had a wedding to go to and decided to try this instead. I loved it! It held up well all night and I got tons of compliments. Thanks so much for posting these tutorials! They're so helpful!

  49. Hi there!
I am officially addicted to your blog :) You seem so personable and kind and I love your tutorials!!
I have a question for you. I have an a line bob (chin-length) and I am hoping to begin growing it out. Do you have any suggestions on how to get through the awkward stages? I usually get so frustrated that I end up chopping it again. When I gew it out before I got it colored often and that got me through. I don't think I can afford that right now though. I have fine hair that generally needs a lot of help :)

  50. So I just found your blog through Pinterest and holy smokes, THIS WAS THE HAIRSTYLE I showed my stylist for my wedding back in '08 and on our trial run she could not figure it out. Come wedding day, we had to go with a totally different, totally "too clean" of a look for me but learning how you did it, we went about it all wrong!

Definitely adding you to my Google Reader, can't wait to see what is in store next, cute blog!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Love this. Thank you! My hair is twice as long as yours, do you think this might still work or do you have another suggestion?

    ReplyDelete
  52. ShopChantal: It might! Give it a try!!

  55. Ah! I LOVE this hairstyle! I just got married in September and wanted this hair style SO BADLY but my lady told me my hair is too long & thick. So we went with something else. BUT I LOVE THIS hair style and I had that same exact picture all over my life for months! <3 Thanks for this post! & yes..my hair lady was right. I just have too much hair for this.

  57. I attempted this today and it actually looked pretty good! I have very thin, fine fair so I find it difficult to do my own hair. In general I am pretty terrible with hair and make-up so I found this to be very helpful. It turned out really well. Thanks for the tips!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I tried this tutorial and the curling iron tutorial. The tip about not having the curls split in the back is wonderful. I absolutely adore these earrings. I even commented on them on your Pinterest pin of this picture. When can I custom order these? tarablockley@gmail.com

  59. I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you. I just found your blog today through a friend on facebook. I have been searching for a new haircut to freshen up my look and bingo I saw yours, then I delved deeper into your blog and it is amazing! I am horrible at styling and have sucha hard time figuring it out, your step by step tutorials are awesome and every question I have about different looks has been addressed on here.. Even I can do it now after seeing it done! You are amazing!

First of all-LOVE that you use K8 for your name-as you can see I do too : ) Secondly, your blog is totally helping me find the glamour in my hair I never really knew how to do-i've just spent an hour sitting here playing with it after doing your awesome curling method and I'm having way, way more fun than I ever imagined I would doing my hair. So so cute!!

  64. Finally got around to trying this one yesterday. Loved it even though I didn't get it to look exactly like your picture! (My bobby pins showed a little more, but I think with practice I will get better) Got several compliments on it including "Megan I've noticed lately you've been doing all these amazing things with your hair, where are you getting your ideas from??" :) Love your blog so much!!

  65. Super...super easy...thank you so much!!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Love this! I tried it, but my hair is much longer and is very thick, so before I rolled the bottom part, I braided it. Worked like a charm and added a fun little twist!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I love this style too - picture perfect in your Macy's dress and pearl earrings. Where did you get the earrings? I love them!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Thank you for this tutorial. I have thick long hair and I struggle to do anything with it.. I lack the hair style gene apparently but your tutorials have inspired me to try something new.

  69. Thank you so much for your videos! I grew up with a mom that kept my hair short while I was young, so I never really knew what to do with my hair other than curling it under or straightening it. I did this look for a Xmas party on Friday all by myself (with your video help of course), and it looked awesome! Thank you so much!!!

  71. I stood in my bathroom for quite a while this evening trying to get this beautiful up-do. I just can't. I think my hair is too smooth, and too long. Insert pouty face. Wish I could get it.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Love this! I tired it today for a wedding, and did it on my first try! I have fairly long (down to my chest) hair, that is very fine. I curled it, sprayed it, and kind of back-combed it to give it some volume. The bobby pins aren't as nicely hidden like yours, but it still looks good!

    ReplyDelete
  73. just did this it really works and is super simple!

  84. This is the first hairdo of it's kind that I have tried to do on myself. My hair is quite longer than yours, but I tried it anyway. My bun is a bit bigger, but I think I have created the same effect. It's great for a wedding or other fancy occasion. I can't wait to try some of your other hairstyle tutorials. Thanks for all the great tips and tricks!

  85. Just found your blog and this is one of my favorites hairdo!!!! I can never do anything with my hair but going to attempt this one with your help.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I tried this in my hair because I think it's so cute. I have SUUUUPER thick hair (not complaining), and it either took 25 bobby pins to hold it in, or my bobbies got all bent out of shape because I tried to secure too much hair with each pin. Can you recommend some bobby pins for really thick hair to help make styles like this possible? Thanks.

  91. Really cute updo! My hair is maybe an inch longer than yours. I just did this and it turned out cute but It feels a little loose and I had to use a lot more bobby pins and struggled to get them to stay in place. It's cute, I'm just not sure how long it will last!! My hair is kinda thick but I just have A LOT of it. In my case would you recommend using larger size bobby pins...or....what would you suggest?

  106. Finally--the style I've been looking for! This is the winner for my bridesmaid updo for my sis's wedding! I have never liked updos that are too sleek or clean, especially ones with untouched curls that look untouched and hard as a rock. I had seen the picture at the top, but your version takes it above and beyond for me. So pretty!

  107. Thank you so much for this! I recently cut my hair and my boyfriend loves when I wear my hair up but I hate wearing ponytails because I feel like I'm going to the gym. This is perfect! 109. Thank you so much for the great tutorial. Prior to this, I've NEVER had a presentable up-do that looked chic and age appropriate. I also always thought my hair was too thick for bobby pins - WRONG. I am learning to appreciate this basic but necessary invention :)
I have already worn this hairstyle 5 times in the last week and receive tons of complements. Plus we are at the start of what promises to be a sweltering summer and this skill couldn't come at a better time (I combine my chic up-do with a bit of a french braid to get my bangs off my face). Thank you. THANK YOU!

  110. Thank you SO much for all of your amazing styles! I used to have a pixie and have finally grown it out to a length that I can have fun with...thanks for the tips!

  111. I just found your blog and I've spent more time here lately than pinterest! I've tried many of your "up-do" styles without much luck. My hair is about the length of yours but super thick and layered. Where you use one pin to hold, I use 4 and still it feels like its on the verge of falling. I love the look of my hair up and so does my husband, but I've never been able to do it myself. I so envy you girls that can just throw it up and it looks great! Any tips for me?

  119. I attempted this one this morning for the first time, and after a few frustrating tries, it finally came out pretty cute! My hair's about the same length as yours, so I'm glad that there's someone out there who does tutorials for mid-length hair. Most other tutorials I've seen have been for hair WAY longer than mine. How refreshing to find your blog. Thank you!

Also, I'm from Raleigh, too. Represent! ;)
