My Daily Hair Products

next
How to wear a headband with a ponytail in kind of a cute way.

One of the things I most enjoy about being a hairstylist is always getting to try the new products! I’m a sucker for any volumizer, hairspray, or texture powder. Oh and shine spray too.

Throughout all my testing and trials of other products, however, I tend to return to the “old faithfuls” that have worked for me from the beginning.

Here they are:

I’ve been using this since 2003. In fact, I started using this hairspray when the company had just began marketing it like crazy. You used to be able to go online, as a professional, and order a “sample”. That sample was a full size can! All my beauty school friends were ordering their own cans and we all fell in love with Kenra.
It’s a strong hold, but is flexible and quick-dry. It never flakes or weighs your hair down. I could keep going on and on about it but I’ll just wrap up with this: whatever you are looking for in a hairspray can be found in Kenra Volume 25.

I discovered Aquage at a beauty show. They were using their products to demonstrate shine and manageability. When I saw a stylist spray the Uplifting foam on a client’s roots and the product just foamed and grew, I knew it was a winner. I tried it for myself and have been using it for years. It is the best.
I’ve tried wet spray root lifters, mousse that you spray in your hand and then try to cram into your hair, and basically any other kind of volumizer our there. None is as effective as Aquage Uplifting Foam.
It does leave a slight texture at your roots that is completely invisible. And that is what shows that it’s an effective root lifter. You need to have the texture to get the lift and hold.
If you don’t like to feel any product in your hair, but you want volume,  plan on having flat hair. You need to have a strong product to lift your roots from your scalp and hold them their all day.

3. Redken Body Full Shampoo
**see update below

When Tigi discontinued the best shampoo and conditioner ever, I was devastated. It was super inexpensive and absolutely wonderful. They relaunched a new version and it was horrible.
So that is when I retreated back to Redken Body Full. It’s a clean feeling, very sudsy shampoo that is great for lift. And yes, I shampoo everyday. Based on the amount of product in my hair I would never be able to wet it, condition it, and style it again. I have to shampoo. If you are able to go a few days between-good job. But if you can’t, don’t worry about it. Shampoo isn’t the worst.

4. Redken Exteme Condtioner
**see update below

I love this conditioner because it strengthens but doesn’t weigh down. Redken just relaunched their Extreme line packed with even better proteins for extra strength! I use this because my hair is heavily colored and I style with heat every day. I need to use it. And it’s wonderful.
**be careful not to overdo protein. There is a point at which it can end up making your hair brittle if you use too much. Alternate Extreme conditioner with a different conditioner every few days, or only use extreme conditioner 2 times a week if you begin to feel like your hair is getting brittle.

A great alternative conditioner that I have been enjoying is Pureology’s Hydrate Light. This feels great on the hair and smells incredible!

4 1/2. Redken Extreme Cat
**see update below

This is a concentrated protein spray that will help strengthen and smooth your hair from the inside out. I spray this on my wet hair that has just been shampooed and then slick on conditioner right over it. The conditioning part of my hair, when I was it, is an intense process. I like to load up on protein when my hair is wet since it is more susceptible to products actually sinking in to the interior part of the hair.
If you use this, you will notice a different. Your hair will feel stronger and smoother. And you’ll feel good about doing something great for your hair.
*I don’t use this daily. I would say, on average, probably 3 times a month.

So those are my dailies. Those are what I travel with, what I always have backstock of, and what I absolutely need to make my hair do what I want it to do.

**A little update on daily products!

Since I have so much exposure to new and different hair products I like to change it up every once in awhile. Lately (the past few months), I’ve been using Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner. It’s made my hair feel phenomenal, and negated my need for a protein/strength spray. It also gives me plenty of volume even though it isn’t a “volumizing” line.
This is not to say I no longer like body full, extreme, or extreme cat–I’ve simply been using some new products lately.

I recommend Pureology, and I do feel that they are a higher quality that justifies their price. However, Redken is still a great provider of hair products at great prices.

Kate,

I contemplated buying the big can of Kenra 25 or the small one…I went for the small one since I had never used it before. HUGE mistake. I love it and use it every day now, you’re right it IS the best. Sigh…need to go to Ulta and stockpile.

Love the hair tips!

I love Moroccan Oil Curl Creme or Argan Oil Curl Creme (Moroccan is $20-$30 but Argan is $9.99 at Sally Beauty). Gives me soft, wavy curls no crunch. You can over apply though and end up with undesirable greasiness.

I have the caucasian super curly hair and have yet to find the “perfect” product either. But I’d be interested in your thoughts of Joico’s JoyWhip and Hair Rules. Hair Rules is pretty obscure, but a pretty effective and unique product. Although if you do any Hair Rules you MUST get the hydrating finishing cream…

I have very curly hair! although I have never tried the rewind line I have been using the All Soft shampoo and conditioner from Redken and they work great they keep my locks touchably soft and shiny ( I find my strands tend to get dry but it seem to have something to do with curly hair in general and i like to add 2 pumps of the Extreme leave-in conditioning cream after i get out of the shower. My hair has never been nicer It look great curly or straight!

I am going to check out the aquage and the straightening one you posted today (8/25) I had a question about the Redken protein spray though. Do you use this daily? I have heard that too much protein can have adverse affects on your hair too… let me know what you think! Thanks! Love the blog! -C

Reply
Hi, I'm Kate says · 08.25.11

Anonymous: I have never heard that Protein can have a negative affect on your hair. And it totally depends on the condition your hair is in. Mine needs daily protein since it’s so heavily highlighted. Others may only need to use it a few times a week, or once a week.
Ask your stylist what she thinks. She’ll be able to assess based on the condition on your hair! 🙂

Hi Kate,

Just wondering, how do you feel about heat-protecting sprays (ie: is there nothing to fear from heat-based styling and are these sprays/serums a big gimmick?). I noticed there aren’t any on your list (unless the protein spray does this), but it sounds like you blow dry and either flat iron or curl daily. Thanks!

Lauren says · 08.30.11

How do you feel about sulfate-free shampoos? Can any hair type actually benefit from them?

Reply
Hi, I'm Kate says · 08.30.11

Michelle: heat-protective sprays are very good for your hair. The protein spray doesn’t offer a ton of heat protection though. The reason I don’t use one is because I haven’t found one that feels right on my hair. I don’t want it to weigh it down, or look heavy. But I’ll be on the search!

Reply
Hi, I'm Kate says · 08.30.11

LaurenL: Hmm…definitely strange since it’s hot in virginia. Could be a number of things. New shampoo? New products? New sheets on your bed? New medication?
Everything we put into our bodies comes out onto our hair too. . .and the scalp of course! Go through that checklist first.
Try Redken Scalp Relief Shampoo too. Even though it is not dandruff that you have, that tends to be a very gentle and nourishing shampoo on the scalp.

I am curious what type of hair dryer you use. My hair is thick but fine and has zero shape/body to it. I just found your blog and love it. I tend to let my hair dry overnight and then straighten it the next morning b/c it’s very thick and takes forever to dry. Do you know if the uplifting foam would be effective if I put it on my towel dried hair and then let it air dry?

Jennifer Skibins says · 09.26.11

Hi Kate, picked up the Body Full shampoo, Extreme CAT and Extreme conditioner this weekend. Was lucky too bec my salon carries Aquage, so I snagged that too. Is there a way to use “too much” of the Aquage? I do love how the combination of these products make my hair look so healthy and make styling a lot easier. Also, last question: I have these little baby hairs along my hairline/bangs (regrowth after birth of my daughter) that are now about two inches long and they are super, super curly while the rest of my hair is wavy. They really stick out and I can’t seem to get them to “cooperate.” I’ve tried the hairspray trick you showed (hairspray on finger) but it didn’t work for me. They still ended up curling and sticking out…doesn’t help that my scalp sweats so the roots get damp easily. Help!?!

Reply
Hi, I'm Kate says · 09.26.11

Jennifer: It would be difficult to overdo the Aquage. So use generously!

And Try a little pomade, or paste, I’m talking a tiny tiny amount to smooth those hairs into the rest of your hair. That may be heavier than just hairspray!

Thanks!

Hi, I'm Kate says · 09.26.11

I heavy highlight my hair the same blonde you do, and so I know my hair needs alot of protein. And thanks for the info about your product choices – I texted my stylist friend and she picked up some aquage at the supply store for me – I’m excited to use it. And second is with the Cat could I use that in my hair after my shower on a lazy day to give my hair extra help? Or how about at night while I’m sleeping? Your hair is gorgeous! It looks to be amazingly thick. My hair is strange – it used to be very curly about 10 years ago, then it started to be very straight and brittle and started falling out. I discovered gluten was the culprit. Now that I’ve eliminated gluten, it is now starting to grow in some – and the new hairs in the very front at my forehead are curly if I don’t blow them out. Although, at it’s healthiest, I would only describe my hair as medium fine at best – never thick and never coarse. What do you suggest as far as keeping it healthy and “faking” the look of thickness/fullness? I want to try the aquage lifting foam (any suggestions on where to purchase?) … but what about how often to dry it, dry shampoo, anything like that? Thanks so much! PS – I am a Raleigh girl myself! 🙂

Looks like TIGI is available. I am not up with this sort of stuff seeing I have not been to a salon in over 12 years! Which TIGI product should I be searching for Kate?

I will contact the Aquage people to see if it is sold in salons in Australia.

Appreciate your help!

I love your blog!! I usually don’t use a straightener because it doesn’t respond very well (breakage)…could it be the straightener or my products? I’ve used Aveda products with a Chi straightener? I no longer have the Chi and do not use Aveda products. What straightener do you use? Also, I use a round brush to dry my massive amount of hair–will that mess up my chances of a good outcome with “Bouncy Curled Under”…using a round brush for me smooths out my hair much more than just simply blow-drying it.

Thanks Kate…you’re great!!

Hi Kate! Thank you for doing this and helping us normals gals/moms in trying to look cute!
Question: I shower and wash my hair at night, clip it up wet/damp and hit the sack, then blow dry and style in the mornings.
How would you advise applying and using the Aquage foam?? Should I apply it at night or rewet my hair in the A.M. and apply it then??

Thank you,
~Mom of 2

Hi Kate.

I absolutely LOVE your blog! I found it through Pinterest (: Anyway, anytime I blow dry my hair, it’s insane. It’s poofy/frizzy even when I put product in it. I use heat on my hair probably 5 out of 7 days a week (the other 2 I’ll just throw it up) but my hair is pretty think and long, and I just wanted to know if you knew of any products that would help. Let me know! Thanks!

@Mom of 2: You won’t be able to get the same effect with Aquage by continuing to do your method. The best way would be to rewet in the morning and apply aquage then!

Kate, I have naturally curly hair. I’ve always been a stickler about it being calm and tamed, but lately I’ve been loving my big hair. I put in ‘big sexy hair’ curling creme, diffuse it and then relish in it’s hugeness haha. What products would you recommend for me? For curly hair in general..

Do you apply the Aquage with a zig-zag and then at the crown like they show on their webiste? Or do you apply just at the roots?

Is there a detangler that your recommend? I have shoulder length hair.

Reply
Unknown says · 10.28.11

I am 36. My hair is about the same length as yours. I have always had thick hair, but over the last year or so I have had huge hair loss, or breakage. I do not know if it is my medication for thyroid (slightly possible side effect-mild hair loss) or breakage from processing. I color (high and low lights), but do not use any heat except for a round brush and dryer. I just started taking Biotin. I have lots of little UNTAMEABLE hair growth (about 2 inches)…HELP! Anyway, my friend just introduced me to using WENS cleansing conditioner. I have Lavender, for volume (really like it) and the Tea Tree (it’s ok). I really like that it makes my hair soft-shiny-healthy looking. My hairstylist hadn’t heard good or bad…Have you??? It is very expensive, especially for how quickly it goes. I actually do not use hair products other than hairspray, but just started using the Big Sexy Root spray to start fixing my hair all cutesy again. I really do not overly care for it, it’s grimey feeling, so I think I will try the Aquage you recommend (thank you!!)
BTW- Found your blog on Pinterest! Great Job! I now know how to fix some of the style I have been frustrated with!

Hi Kate!!

I have VERY frizzy/curly hair. I have gotten pretty good at straightening it with little to no frizz. However, when I wear it curly it puffs up right away. I’ve tried using just about every curling product; Redkin, Matrix, KMS California, Kenra, Bed Head, etc.

I can’t find anything that controls frizz without weighing my hair down which makes it less curly.

Any suggestions? : )

Kate, I used to have beautiful, curly hair with just some mousse/gel and hairspray. Now, my hair seems thin and fine and I am lucky to get my hair wavy/slightly curly with the same method. Am I doomed to blow-drying and curling my hair with a curling iron or is there a way I can still use the “scrunching” method to obtain the beautiful curls I want?

Hey Kate. I am looking to purchase some of the products you recommended, but my hair has never had color so I doubt I need the CAT or even the Extreme Conditioner. For the most part I have pretty normal hair. It is very straight, pretty thick, but also very fine. I struggle the most with volume. Would you recommend purchasing the Body Full shampoo AND conditioner or an alternate? This was my initial assumption, but then I read not to use a volumizing shampoo with a volumizing conditioner…something about it creating static. Would love a suggestion! Thanks!

I have terribly stubborn fine thin hair and have tried and spent so much on volumizing, thickening, root lifting creams, mouseses, sprays, lotions and potions. And oh do I have the packed bathroom cabinet to prove it!! From $5.00 ranging to $35.00 for a meager 2.5 fl oz bottle Ive tried em all. Its always tough for me to find something that will give me volume, root lift, general managability and hold esp against the humidity in the summer. A great deal of products worked just as claimed until I would leave the house and my results expired before my eyes. What I have found most annoying about products in this catagory esp the mousses and spray gels is that they make your hair feel coated and gross, then about 3 hrs later your hair looks even thinner and worse that ever because its being weighed down by the product. For at least myself I have noticed most hairstyling products do not help fine thin hair’s apperance at all except for good old fashioned hairspray at the root.

If you think of it hairspray is logically the lightest of hairstyling products with the most hold and flexability. Shielo’s Volume Hairspray realy fits the bill for me. You can use this on wet hair as a styling aid, you just have to combe it out first, spray it on damp roots before you blow dry.Fantastic volume that lasts more than 15min.

I roller set, curling iron, and touch up with a flat iron on occasion with the Shielo Volume Hairspray – and love the results, next day hair feels great too which is rare for me. The smell is a little vanilla cotton candyish, but not enough to be an issue and dissapates quickly. Ive since thrown out and given away the rest of my hairstyling stuff as Shielo’s Volume hairspray has turned into my go to product.

I too am a hair dresser and have been for 16 yrs (gosh, that sounds like I am old, I am only 34). haha Anyway, I have long hair with shorter layers and I too an in LOVE with aquage uplifting foam! Aquage has come out with a line of shampoos, Biomega. I have fallen in love with the volume shampoo and spray in conditioner. The conditioner is so light and I love the fact that when i am drying and heat styling my hair I still have the conditioner in there protecting it! You should give it a try! Plus when you use the shapmoo and conditioner then the uplifting foam (and I love their hairspray too) they all have the same scent, so I am not layering on different scents, which I am apparently sensitive too! They also have the new boosters you can add to their products, which I haven’t tried yet (I am 37 wks pregnant with my 3rd and have been put on bed rest because she is trying to come) but I am just as soon as I can get up to Armstrong McCall!!!! :O) Keep up the good work, you are adorable! :O)

I am not a big fan of the “product-y” feel that things like that and Dust It give to my hair, but like you said, if you don’t use them, your hair will be flat. I also happened to buy Redken Extreme shampoo and conditioner since I flat iron everyday and color every 6-8 weeks. I bought those before I even noticed that they were favorites of yours. I just found your site through Pinterest and now I have gone out to buy all the same products you use and today I am on my way to the shower and try out the products. I spend good money on my face because I use Gratiae so why do I buy cheap products for my hair? I am worth it so I bought all of them.
Thank you so much for your blog of information.
Thanks,

Hey Kate! I found your blog through pinterest and I am now hooked. Recently I started using Joico KPak shampoo and conditioner because my hair is dry. A friend had suggested it to me. I just wondered if you had heard of it and your thoughts. Also, I recently started using CHI fusion before I flat ironed and seem to really like that.
I am in the process of letting my hair grow back out so I can’t do any of the styles on me just yet but I have done them on my daughter. I did the half updo on her several times and each time she has received tons of compliments…so thanks for all your post!!!

Hi Kate,
Thanks for all your recommendations. I’ve got medium length, thick, coarse, heavily-highlighted hair. Like some others, I haven’t found a styling product that will give me the lift & volume I want without the heavy feeling. My hair is heavy enough as it is! I do love Redken products, but would you recommend your shampoo for thick hair? And will an average foam work well for my hair, too? I feel like if I use the products for fine/thin hair it won’t do anything for me. Thanks for all your advice!

(btw, how do you feel about Bumble & Bumble products?)

Hey Kate!

Thanks for all the great hair tips! I’m a fellow Chicagoan and LOVE Portillo’s! I purchased the Redken Cat and wanted to clarify when and how to use it. Do I shampoo and condition my hair then use Redken Cat or use the spray instead of conditioner?

Hey Kate! I found you on pinterest and I have been on your blog probably every day since 🙂 Anyway, I have dark hair and 2 summers ago attempted to go blonde. Over 4 months my stylist did heavy highlights and eventually got very light, but then the breakage! So, I went back and have since been in recovery over my tresses. I cut off 6 inches and have about 3-4 left to go. I have been using Redken’s heat glide and their Anti-Snap. These seem to help a bit, but I was curious as to whether or not I should use the Cat you were talking about over the Anti-Snap? Both? Or am I fine using what I have? Also, I LOVE volume, but have been avoiding too much teasing as I am worried for more breakage. Do you tease your hair at all with Aquage? Thanks so much for sharing all of your tips!!!

Hi Kate I went to the redkin website and was reading the reviews for the full body shampoo and every sinlge review was about how it made their hair limp and that they want the “old” formula back. Do you still reccommend the “new” full body shampoo?

Kate-
I’ve tried to find the answer to my question(s) in the above, but I got exhausted from reading, and am thinking you must be exhausted from answering…you are so sweet!
So, I have REALLY thick, course, combo hair (straight as board on the top near my face and pretty curly underneath). I never learned to go with the curl, so I straighten it when I have time to fix it. It was once super soft and shiny, but is now a frizzy mess. I have recently found a stylist that I like, who is awesome with color, but she is about 18 years old. Thankfully, she encouraged me to buy the Redken All Soft shampoo and conditioner and that has helped some with the overall condition of my hair. I would love to try the products that you recommend, but I wonder if you would advise that I make any modifications due to my specific type of hair? Bless you! 🙂

Okay so I am now using every single product you have listed here and am LOVING it – my hair has been so much easier to style!

This could be a coincidence but I was all of a sudden losing chunks of my hair and added in the Extreme CAT…no more hair loss! I don’t know if it was the product or what but I’m definitely continuing to use it regardless 🙂

First of all…I love your blog. I am looking for your advice for a product to add texture to my very straight hair. I have a lot of hair but overall it is fine and smooth, which doesn’t work well for the beachy wavy look that I love. With that in mind I was wondering if you have ever used bumble and bumble surf spray? I was thinking that it might add the texture I need?

Just wanted to say thanks for posting the products you use! My hair is a grown out bob as well, and I have been on the hunt for an awesome volume-enhancing product because it constantly falls flat. Every product I’ve tried has made my hair feel greasy and weighed it down more. I decided to give Aquage a try based on your recommendation and I LOVE IT! It really doesn’t feel like I have product in, but it works wonders at keeping my roots lifted and appears as though my hair is finally full of life! Thanks so much!

I have a few questions.. You may have already answered these. So, I’m sorry if you are repeating yourself. I wanted to ask about that Wen shampoo. On their commercials they state that anything that has a lather strips your hair. What are your thoughts on this? Also I wanted to ask about a heat protectant. Which one works best? Lastly, I have long, thick hair, and will likely be cutting it off, that I cannot get to hold curl AT ALL! The last person that cut my hair did it for me, but I myself, and my friends, CANNOT get them to stay. HELP!!!

Also..I’m 31 years old and I NEVER learned how to french braid. I’ve seen it done, watched videos…but something you said when you were doing one of your tutorials clicked and I Was like OHH that’s what I kept doing wrong! So thanks 🙂 Keep up the good work girlie!

My question to you is what am I doing wrong, I purchased the Aquage, when I use with Velcro rollers it makes my hair look greasy am I using to much? Or to little? When I tried it though my hair looked greasy. Here is what I did, I blowed dried my hair to about 85% so that I could put in velcro rollers then finished drying it. After taking out the rollers my hair looked greasy, what did I do wrong? Also I tried the Kenra hairspray love it. I live in Georgia and its seems to hold with through all the weather changes it has.

Kate,
Ever since I found your blog through pinterest, I have to get on the computer every morning before styling my hair to try another one of your styles! I am working on growing my hair out and was in the awkward stage again…I was to the point of giving up and cutting it (only to try again in a few months) when I found your blog. Thanks for keeping me going! 🙂 I really love your styles!
Ok, to the products you’ve mentioned…I have really fine hair, is the aquage uplifting foam my best bet for some body? I have been using Catwalk big and bigger for years. It worked really well when my hair was short, but it’s not really working anymore so I was thinking of switching to your product. Also, you mentioned powder texture but didn’t say what brand. Will that replace the bedhead manipulator I have been using? And I am assuming some kind of spray texture will work better when I do the wavy look I learned from you. Any other tips would be appreciated! Thanks for all the hair help!

Kate,

First of all, I’ve been checking out your blog (and your sister Lauren’s) for about a week now, and it’s a new favorite! Thanks for all the insider tips and tricks!

Yesterday, after a lot of deliberation (and waiting for some coupons to arrive from Ulta) I finally made the trek to pick up some of your favorite products. It sounds to me like you and I have the same texture of hair, and lots of it, although mine’s a bit longer than yours and I get spiral perms. However, I too use a blow dryer (with a diffuser) daily. I figure since I’m a big hair girl and volume at my roots always seems to be an issue, particularly as my perm grows out, I needed to give your volumizing products a try. I purchased the Redkin shampoo, conditioner and the Kenra hairspray. This morning was my first run with all three products. I’m already in love! Usually, my hair just doesn’t turn out as well on workdays…I think it’s simply because on the weekends I can take more time…but I had the best hair day of the week. So far, I’m most impressed with the hairspray as it sends a fine mist and doesn’t coat the hair with a web of tackiness like most aerosoles I’ve used do. It sort of disappears into the hair and yet provides the hold to support the volumized style. I’d love to splurge on the Aquage mousse, but these products are already making a big difference.

Thanks so much for sharing your styles and suggestions with all of us. I can’t wait to try out some of the up-dos this weekend…once I get some of those clear, little pony ties!

-All the best!

Kate, I found your page on Pinterest, so I decided to check it out. I love your tutorials. I have been looking for cool ideas of what I could do with my hair, and I know I want to try your tips. I have a couple of questions for you. I have medium thick hair that is usually super soft and healthy-looking, but the ends get course and don’t look as nice as the rest of my hair a few weeks after a trim. My hair breaks easily, but there is so much of it, you can’t tell until I pull it back and all the little pieces become visible. I don’t usually use products, because I have never really known how to do many styles. Do you have any products that might help improve my ends and keep my hair from breaking?

Also, I LOVE my Matrix Biolage leave-in tonic. I could totally tell the difference when I accidentally left it at home when I left to go back to college for the spring semester. My hair just wasn’t as soft. Have you ever used it? Would you recommend the rest of the Biolage line (I am a starving college student as they say, and I haven’t made the transition to other Biolage products)? [Also which Biolage line, since there are so many!?] Do they work as well as some of the other products you mentioned, like the Redkin shampoos/etc?

This is absolutely positively no offense to you as I know you mentioned that you are a Redken certified stylist…BUT (lol), I can’t seem to find a Redken shampoo and conditioner that I am pleased with, but I’m very interested as you obviously have such great hair. I have thin, slightly wavy, naturally homely blonde hair with lots of highlights (to not look so homely :)), that I blow dry and flat iron/curl daily. I am not afraid of product in the least! I have been using Bedhead shampoo and conditioners and have been adding Wella, Enrich leave in conditioner to my biweekly regime. With these details, are there any shampoos/conditioners you would suggest? I noticed you have recently discovered the Pureology line of products, which are a fave of mine as well, but tough on the budget! So I am happy to announce I found a PERFECT alternative with the same ingredients for about $6 a bottle at your local CVS, Target or Walmart store. Loreal EverPure Shampoo, Conditioners & Styling Products. ALL SULFATE FREE & in a variety of formulas to best match your hair type or need. I also recently discovered the new Suave Keratin Infusion Line, which are comparable to the Kerastase line of products AND OH MY GOODNESS, I am in love! I recently colored my hair lighter for summer & the Ever Pure, being lower in sulfates, refused to lather when I shampooed, which I know doesn’t matter but I like a rich, thick, lather, so I gave this a try & it is AWESOME & at Walmart, less than $3 per bottle in 2 different formulas! While it is NOT completely Sulfate free, it is a lower sulfate line of products, so not so harsh. My hair was slightly damaged, dry & coarse after all of the flat ironing my new cut requires, & after 1 use of the Suave Keratin Infusion, it was super soft, shiny & manageable, TOTALLY WORTH the $3! Check them out when you get a chance & let me know what you think! TOTALLY LOVE YOUR BLOG, TIPS, ADVICE & TUTORIALS, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Kate! Wonderful blog! I follow all your style tutorials. I myself am a cosmetologist but my daughter can’t seem to be able to style her hair. Even if I show her how. Your tutorials have helped her alot. I am looking for a great product to reduce the oil in her hair. She tends to get oily by 3 in the afternoon if she washes her hair in the morning. She is using Redken Nature’s Rescue Detox Shampoo and no conditioner. I haven’t noticed a difference for her. She is actually more oily than before. She has tried not shampooing and using dry shampoo to no avail. Any suggestions. I have looked all over for answers. She is not color treated and is growing her hair out for her wedding in 2 years. I am debating coloring her to give her some texture also as her hair is flat and lifeless. It is very fine and she wants volume but also hates the feel of product in her hair. The only way I have been able to stop her problem is to us a root lift on her and she hates the feel. I can keep her from getting oily this way…too bad she hates the feel and won’t replicate it herself. If you have any suggestions please let me know.

I typically use an extra hold moose and then blow dry it straight, then begin curling it. Any advise would be great! thanks!

Your blog is wonderful! Seeing all your ideas for hair, makeup and nails really makes me want to take the time to enjoy being a girl again! I love that you list the products you use! I am wondering if you could recommend ‘green’ versions of your favorite hair, skin and makeup products? The idea of putting all kinds of chemicals and parabens and sulfates in my hair and on my skin is kind of scary, so I was hoping you could recommend some more natural-based products? Thanks!

Hi Kate,
I love your blog and all your tutorials. Actually wearing “the messy bun” as I type this? I have fine, straight hair and my hair won’t really hold on to the teeasing. After a short while it goes flat again. So I assume that the aquage uplifting foam might just do wonders! BUT…yes, that’s one big fat but….it’s not sold in Europe! I searched the internet up and down…but no such luck.

Do you have any recommendation for a somewhat similar product? I’ve used the volumizing tonic from Aveda and it’s helping a little but not enough.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season. Can’t wait till my inbox shows the next tutorial! I am sure there are some holiday ones in the pipeline!

Hello Kate – I just stumbled across your blog because my hair is finally getting long enough to do a loose bun and I’m now addicted. You’re such a lovely lady and I really appreciate all your tips. You’d think I’d know it all by now, but guess not!

A couple of questions. My hair is thinning in front due to my age and so on and wondered if you have any tutorials on how to add an extension or a way to camouflage the thinning so I can pull my hair up and/or back. My hair is super thick in the back; not so much in front.

Also, what sort of hairbrush do you use for teasing? If it’s already on the website, I apologize.

Last question, also apologize if it’s on your blog already, but I’m sick of my hot rollers. What is the brand you used? Starts with a ‘J’.

Thank you again and God bless to you and your family. Mary

I have really thick, wavy hair and lately it has become very dry and damaged looking (I color it). I usually let my hair dry naturally after I wash it because it’s such a pain to blow-dry. It always poofs and frizzes when it dries. I’ve tried all kinds of deep conditioners and masks, and nothing seemed to work. I used the Shielo Smoothing Shampoo and the Shielo Conditioner and noticed immediately when I was combing it that the ends didn’t feel brittle and my hair looked shiny. It actually dried curly instead of frizzy and is really bouncy! I love Shielo – and te smell is amazing!!!

I experienced an unusual amount of hair loss directly after trying a Pureology sample that I signed up for via an add online and it was the Pure Volume for Fine Colour Treated Hair. Has anyone else had this same reaction? Am I allergic to something in the product? This doesn’t seem right or okay! It worries me, being that I am a healthy 26 year old and shouldn’t be losing this much hair. If this new line of theirs is causing hair loss they should be informed and recall it. Any thoughts?

Kate…just discovered your blog via Pinterest – just in the nick of time! I have a hair appt. in two days and was fed up, ready for the chopping block until now. Your blog INSPIRES me! My hair is thick, naturally (ugly, unevenly) curly but because it’s your length in the videos, it’s more wavy than curly; however, I straighten it daily. Now that I’ve found your tutorials, I’m willing to learn how to “control” my waves and might actually use them to my advantage. (Some family members will be thrilled to see my waves again!) So my hair appt. went from a “cut” appointment to a “trim/clean-up” appt. Only thing I need to do at this point is grow my bangs out more. Bangs are a MUST in my world…but in the morning I’m going to start incorporating your tricks – and my stylist will be glad to know I need some products! 🙂

It’s for every person like me who was bald at a time and used Minoxidil 15 which just simply creates and increases new cells on your scalp for the Growth of your Hair and you just get your natural Hair in just 2-3 weeks or before.
I would suggest just don’t waste your money on your Hair Oils and other products which are useless.
You can get this from minoxidil15express.com so easily and you should try this with trust.

Needless to say, I have literally tried any curl product available, from my hair stylist to drugstore brands. The BEST products I have used for curly days is Deva Curl. They ONLY make product for curly hair and it’s amazing!! I love the No-Pop Shampoo and the One Condition (I use as regular conditioner, rinse out, towel dry my hair and use another dime-sized drop as a leave-in.) Hello Kate! I know you are extremely busy with you new little one!(Congrats by the way!!) I also know that you posted this a long time ago, but I have been wanting to pick your brain for quite some time now. My mother has her own salon and she used to stock Aquage products. After the retailer where she bought her products, got into a tiff with Aquage, they quit stocking it. I have been wanting to try the uplifting foam, ever since I saw the results you were getting. My hair texture is very much like you describe yours to be. I was just wondering if knew of any other easier or cheaper way to acquire the Aquage uplifting foam? I would LOVE to try it. I have been using BigSexyHair’s Root Pump Plus for a while now, and I like it, but not for an every day style because I feel like it’s almost too much to use unless for special occasions. I have been using HealthySexyHair’s activating scalp care mousse, just because its a lighter mousse and gives me a little volume that is more suitable for everyday use, but its still just not enough! It’s like I need an in-between the two products, product! I was hoping the uplifting foam is the key. Any information you can offer would help greatly!
(Also i wanted to tell you that I have learned a great deal from your blog and have reading it for a few years now! Im not sure why I haven’t commented on anything before now!)
Take care!

I have tried about 4 different hairsprays to control my frizz – and i say that the Shielo Volume Flexible Hairspray is the best. This is definitely better, it doesn’t make your hair sticky, holds it in place (even in windy conditions) and doesn’t look like you have anything on unlike other hairsprays I have used.
